FROM YOUR CHAPTER DIRECTOR

March came in like a lion and gave us some nice days to ride, however it did remind us that it

was still Winter. Let’s just pray that it isn’t as wet this year as last.

Personally, I took advantage of the down time and to do a once over of the trike, to perform

some preventative maintenance and to change that dreaded air filter on a GL1800, which, by the

way, wasn’t as difficult of a task as I had thought it was. I had a negative mindset about it for years. I

often think about the Maintenance Day the chapter had several years ago at Dave & Vicki’s home,

while we were preparing for our trip to Florida and a chapter cruise. I had completely serviced my

1500, to include changing the spark plugs and changing the air filter, while Gary Laughlin and Bernie

Newton (then of PA-L) tore into Gary’s trike to change out the air filter. Now that I have done it one

time, it won’t be so intimidating the next time around.

For our March Gathering, we made a long overdue move. We found the perfect place with the

perfect private room – well almost perfect. There is the morning Eastern sun issue, but we will work

around that. There were a lot of “firsts” at the Gathering. It was our “first” gathering at Brothers

Family Diner in Mechanicsburg. Bill Fiorina was a “first” time visitor to Chapter K as he submits his

new membership to GWRRA. Welcome aboard Bill. The chapter now draws one winner at the

gatherings and pays for their breakfast. The “first” winner, of the “first” drawing, at the “first” new

gathering location, was Bill Fiorina, at his “first” attendance to a GWRRA function – how cool is that??

We had a winner this month for the Ride for Cash. It rolled over from last month, when Brenda

was not present at the Gathering to claim her winning ticket. The whole pot went to John C. The

winners of the 50/50 were: Amy, Denny and Tom.

As I mentioned at the Gathering, District had reached out to Chapter K to lead a guided ride to

the Battlefield in Gettysburg during the District Rally. I want to thank Rick and Vicki, who went

straight to work and put together a great route. The three of us enjoyed the great weather and test

rode it after the gathering.

On March 30th the District held the Chapter Couple Fun Day.

We would to thank and congratulate Chapter K’s Couple of the Year – TODD and DEB

HAMPSON for attending. I had to leave the event early due to a family commitment but I understand

they had a great time and enjoyed meeting and interacting with the other Chapter Couples in

attendance.

SICKBAY

We would like to ask everyone for their thoughts and prayers for 5 chapter members:

For Trudy Woodring as she continues her treatments.

For Carol Long and her family as her brother prepares for a transplant.

For Debbie Hampson as she prepares for her neck surgery.

For John Leib for his upcoming hip replacement.

For former Charter Member Vicki Hutchison as she continues to recover from her surgery.

As always, I would like to end by saying to keep an eye on the chapter web site, / gwrra-pa-k.org.

We are always making changes, updating events, adding and deleting information. If there is

something you would like to add to the schedule, please let us know. We value your input.

FROM YOUR ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTOR

Wow, what a great turnout. We had 24 Chapter ‘K’ members show up at the dinner ride at the Wharf Restaurant in Harrisburg on March 16th. Thanks to Cindy Parson for setting up the dinner for our group. Riding season is just getting started and we hope to have some more dinner rides in the future. Two, three or four wheels…it doesn’t matter. Just to be able to get together and have a good time, that’s all that matters. About a month ago, the Chapter made the decision to stop mailing birthday and anniversary cards to members. With the cost of greeting cards and the cost of postage going up and up, we just felt that since we announce the birthdays and anniversaries at the gatherings and always list two months’ of the same in the newsletter, that we could save some treasury funds by stopping this practice. We hope the membership understands. We will continue to send cards for sympathy or get well wishes. On Saturday, April 20th, we are leading a ride to the Markets at Shrewsbury. This is rain or shine, so of course, 2-3-4 wheels are welcome. We will be leaving from the Tractor Supply Parking Lot (alongside the building) in Dillsburg at 10 a.m. Please be there prior to 10 a.m. with a full tank. It will take about an hour to get to the Markets at Shrewsbury. Once we arrive, you will have 1 ½ hours to have lunch and wander around. There are 3 buildings that include: -- Eighty Three (this is home furnishings and gifts) -- Food Market (fresh produce, bulk foods, meats, amish bakery (great pies and baked goods), sandwich and meal stands (crab cakes, BBQ, etc.), ice cream, french fries, soft pretzels, salads, and much more . -- Penn Dutch Furniture (and structures outside). Inside the food market there is a seating & table area to sit down to eat. If you want to take some food home, you might want to bring a cooler with you if possible. We have a nice route set up to get there and different route to return back to Dillsburg. We’re hoping for nice riding weather. Hope you can join us. Till next time, Rick & Vick Your ACD’s

Game Day Corrections. Well, I hope no one tried to play “Fat Boy” as a result of my article last month since my description

of how to play the card game was wrong. No wonder I lost. Kitty Schart gave me a copy of the correct game rules, so I

thought it would be appropriate for me to include them this month. Because there were 10 of us, we used 3 decks of cards.

Kitty’s paper shows that you use 2 decks of regular playing cards (52 cards). I don’t know how many people determines

that you go to 3 decks, but anyway, below is the description.

--The game is played with 2 decks of regular playing cards (52 cards per deck).

--You will need 8 jokers. A regular deck of playing cards has 2 jokers. To have the additional 4 jokers, you’ll need the

jokers from 2 additional decks.

--Deal 8 cards per person.

--Place the 8 cards face down in 2 rows of 4 each.

--Then turn any 2 cards face up.

--The object of the game is to make matches.

--The card in the top row must match the same column in the bottom row. This cancels out the 2 cards. They do

not count in scoring.

--When you have 2 columns, side by side, of the same 4 (or 6, if you are fortunate to get the 6) this counts as -20

points for 4 cards, -30 points for 6 cards, or -60 points for 8 cards (wow, really lucky).

--The scoring value is as follows:

--Jokers are worth -5 points

--Ace is worth +1 point

--King is worth 0 points

--All other cards are worth their face value (again, unless you have 2 matching in a column above & below, they are

cancelled out and worth 0 points).

--If you have 4 or 6 jokers, side by side (top and bottom row), 4 jokers are -40 points and 6 jokers are -60 points.

--The game consists of 9 rounds of dealing the cards and play.

--The lowest score at the end of the 9 rounds wins.

Thanks Kitty, I hope this clears up the rules of the game.

QUICK TIPS: MSF’s Guide to Group Riding

Motorcycling is primarily a solo activity, but for many, riding as a group – whether with friends on a

Sunday morning ride or with an organized motorcycle rally – is the epitome of the motorcycling

experience. Here are some tips to help ensure a fun and safe group ride:

Arrive prepared. Arrive on time with a full gas tank.

Hold a riders’ meeting. Discuss things like the route, rest and fuel stops, and hand signals (see

diagrams on page 8). Assign a lead and sweep (tail) rider. Both should be experienced riders who

are well-versed in group riding procedures. The leader should be aware of each rider's skill level

before the ride and monitor the riders during the ride.

Keep the group to a manageable size, ideally five to seven riders. If necessary, break the group

into smaller sub-groups, separated by a few seconds, each with a lead and sweep rider.

Ride prepared. At least one rider in each group should have a first-aid kit and full tool kit, and all

riders should carry a cell phone, so the group is prepared for any problem that they might encounter.

Periodically check the riders following using your rear view mirrors. If you see a rider falling

behind, slow down so they may catch up. If all the riders in the group use this procedure, the group

should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without pressure to ride too fast to catch up.

If you’re separated from the group, don’t panic. Your group should have a pre-planned procedure

in place to regroup. Don’t break the law or ride beyond your skills to catch up.

For mechanical or medical problems, use a cell phone to call for assistance as the situation

warrants.

GLENDA & VICKI’S FUNNY CORNER

Ole Fills In…

A doctor in Duluth, Minnesota wanted to get off work and go hunting, so he approached

his assistant. “Ole, I am goin’ huntin’ tomorrow and don’t want to close the clinic. I want you

to take care of the clinic and take care of all my patients.” “Yes sir!” answers Ole.

The doctor goes hunting and returns the following day and asks, “So Ole, how was your

day?” Ole told him that he took care of three patients.

“The first one had a headache so I gave him Tylenol.” “Bravo mate, and the second one?”

asks the doctor.

“The second one had stomach burning and I gave him Maalox sir,” says Ole. “Bravo, bravo!

You’re good at this, and what about the third one?” asks the doctor.

“Sir, I was sitting here and suddenly the door opens and a woman enters. Like a flame, she

completely undresses herself and lies down on the table and shouts, ‘Help me! I haven’t

seen a man in over two years!!”

“Tunderin’ Lard Yeezus, Ole, what did you do?” asks the doctor.

“I put drops in her eyes!!” (Your mind was in the gutter, wasn’t it???)

CUB SCOUT PACK 196 PANCAKE BREAKFAST – MARCH 23, 2019:

Eleven Chapter ‘K’ members went to the breakfast at 8:30 a.m. The theme was “Star Wars”, and

there were lots of kids, and some adults, dressed up as Star Wars characters. It was held in the

cafeteria of the Sporting Hill Elementary School in Mechanicsburg. It was good…the only bad thing

were the seats. They were meant for elementary school age children, so trying to sit on those low

stools was interesting. For some of us, getting down there was OK, but we were a little worried about

how to get back up! It’s always nice to support the scouts, thanks to those who attended.

FROM YOUR PA DISTRICT EDUCATOR

Hi Everyone. The Riding Season is closing in on us with most of you taking your first ride of the season

starting in May. The following are just plain old common sense, but when common sense is in short supply,

the numbers change on the statistics page.

• BACK OFF DUDE: Space is the best protection you have between yourself and the people who are not you. Keep your distance from others, so you have more time to react and more space to adjust when someone else does something stupid.

• TO SOME PEOPLE A YELLOW LIGHT MEANS GO FASTER: Many crashes happen at intersections. Cars that turn left in front of you and cars on the side streets that pull into your lane are the biggest dangers. Always be looking for potential hazards, and anticipating how you will react. If a car can cross your path, assume that it will. That old saying about assumptions? It doesn’t apply here.

• WHAT ARE YOU A PSYCHIC OR SOMETHING? It’s pretty simple – if you have the right skills you can react a lot quicker and help avoid crashes. Studies show that most riders involved in crashes either under brake the front tire and over brake the rear, or do not separate braking from swerving or choose swerving when it’s not appropriate. Knowing when and how to stop or swerve are critical skills to keep your butt off the ground.

• IF ONLY EVERY LINE WAS STRAIGHT, BUT WHAT FUN WOULD THAT BE? A common cause of single-vehicle crashes is riders running wide in a curve or turn and colliding with the roadway or fixed object. Be alert to whether a curve remains constant, gradually widens, gets tighter, or involves multiple turns.

• BEING AFRAID OF A LITTLE PIECE OF RUBBER DOES NOT MAKE YOU LESS MANLY. Potholes, wet or icy surfaces, railroad tracks, and tire scraps all increase your chances of going down. Avoid obstacles by slowing down or going around them – duh, right? On slippery roads, reduce your speed, use both brakes and try to keep your bike as upright as possible. When crossing railroad tracks, it’s safer to stay in your lane rather than try to turn to cross at a 90-degree angle. For track and road seams that run parallel to your route, cross at a 90-degree angle. For track and road seams that run parallel to your route, cross at an angle of at least 45-degrees to avoid catching your tires.

• TURN MAN: Traffic lights don’t hate you. It’s just that some of them don’t turn green until they receive a signal from a metal detector buried in the pavement. Sometimes bikes don’t have enough metal to make them work. Seriously, just try to locate a detector – usually a square or octagonal pattern of thin lines in the pavement – and ride along it.

• IF THEY CAN’T SEE YOU, YOU DON’T EXIST: Many crashes happen when the driver of a car doesn’t see you. No surprise there. So, help yourself by wearing the proper clothing, using your headlight and riding in the best lane position. And, before making a move, always let people know what you’re doing by using the correct signals.

Evelyn and I would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter on April 21st.
