Meet our newest chapter mem-ber, Christopher Thomas Ford.

Granted, his parents, Rick & Wendy, may be pushing him just a bit starting him out on a

GL1500.

But as you can see from these pictures, hes already got his

own Chapter vest, he can almost reach the handlebars, and his helmet fits pretty well

(lower right). Just how absorbent are those

helmet sliks anyway.?

Now if he can only convince Mom & Dad to track down that side-car rig with an intercom-

baby monitor.

Chapter Directors Anita & JR Alkire

A Very Happy New Year to You All!

As many of you know, JR and I were given a family reunion trip to Maui, Hawaii and that is why we are not with you this month at the meeting. We bid you all aloha!

As the first of the year is a time to set New Year Resolutions, we thought that a great resolution would be to get signed up into the Rider Education Program. It is so important to show your commitment to rid-ing safe by taking the first step and pledging to ride safe. Thats all you have to do to get started into the Rider Education Program. (Oh yes, there is also some paperwork.) After your pledge and the paperwork, this Chapter will pay for you to get started. Lets face it; the vest is a little na-ked without that round patch! But more important than this is what that patch stands for! A goal that we have for the Chapter this year is to dras-tically increase our commitment to riding safe and showing it through Rider Education. We were honored to receive our Masters designation at the December meeting (see page 20). We would like to see all of you join us and well make that a long line of Master riders so there are no bub-bles left in the bubble wrap when that patch gets to you. So when we re-turn and get the report from Jim and Carole, we want to see lots of new names on the list and I will be pleased to sign that check! We will see you all at the Dinner Ride on the 17th and we look forward to a fabulous 2002! PS: Look at the page across from this one, oh my gosh, its a rider education application! Take the time, fill it in and get started! For all of you in the program use this form to renew your current level as you re-new your commitment to riding safe! Aloha!

Assistant Chapter Directors Mike & Elma Maury

It was a dark and stormy ni No, that was last year!! Lets try this once more. It was a bright and sunny Saturday with just a bit of chill in the air when Mike, Doug, and Larry took off to pre-ride The Casino Run. While I was home fending for myself with an ice pack on my knee, I certainly was envious of the wind in their faces on the twisty ride, not to mention the brief (?) casino visits being made

under the guise of ride planning. As lunchtime approached, I con-cluded all I could safely carry was some cold pizza. While I ate, all I could think of was the fun of eating a hot buffet lunch with friends, etc, etc. Yet, all I could do was pat my bike on its little red fender and reas-sure it that its mentor, Mr. Goldwing, would return soon. Six hours later, Mike returned to a wife with a horrendous case of cabin fever.

Ive got to say that being a member of CA-1F has brought a whole new dimension to our lives. Weve made many new friends and seen many new places that we never would have gone on our own. Join-ing the chapter was a fast cure for the empty nest syndrome. Now, our son actually has to make advanced plans if he wants to see us and is the one complaining that were never home. I would not have believed that wed be writing articles for the ACD page a year ago.

Being the Dinner Ride Coordinators for the past year has broad-ened our horizons (and other parts) as well. We quickly learned to under-stand the meaning of Ride! Ride! WHEN DO WE EAT??? Our dinner ride attendance ranged from 20 25 in the colder months to 45 50 as it got warmer. Thanks again to all of you who suggested new places for us to try. Jo & Doug Frizzell will be taking over with Bud and Mary Brinker as their Assistants, and Im sure they will appreciate your input as well.

In order to make our chapter what you want it to be, we all need to work together. That means giving us your input on rides and other ac-tivities youd like to see on the schedule. Thanks to all of you who came to the Planning Meeting on December 29th. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated. Planning for a group as large as ours can be a monumental task for just a few of us. Also, thanks to Jim and Kay Zabler for letting us meet at their home. For those of you who were unable to attend, please let any of the staff know about your ideas, so we can consider them at our next planning meeting in the spring. Ride Safe.

CA-1F Events Committee Jeff Tichy & Tony Wells

To: CA-1F Members & Friends Date: December 30, 2001 Subject: CA-1F Garage Sale on February 2, 2002 Tony and I will be hosting a garage sale at our home on Saturday, Febru-ary 2, 2002 from ~odark thirty till around 3PM. We are counting on YOU to make this one heck of a big sale. Money taken in from the sale of items can either be kept by the individual or donated to the chapter to be used to pay for future Chapter Events. So clear your closets and clean out your garage! We are looking for QUALITY merchandise that you are dying to part with. All those items that you couldnt live without, all those items you HAD to have, all those TRINKETS you no longer need. If its a priceless family heirloom that you must get a certain price for, mark it with that price, otherwise price is negotiated to make the sale... you touch it, you buy it, cause we aint putting it back in storage. Come one, come all, we have the location, all we need is the merchan-dise. Clean it up, get it ready for sale, and get it to us. Our contact infor-mation is listed below, and directions to our house are posted on the Chapter Website. Bring your goodies and spend the day with us. Our home on Lincoln Avenue generates A LOT of traffic, and garage sales ARE a major event in Escondido! For those not able (or willing) to spend the day, wed be happy to sell your goodies, all you need to do is get them to us. Send us an email or give us a call if you have any questions about this event.

California News & Views Jim & Pat Moynagh

California District Directors Pat & I wish all California GWRRA members the best in this New Year. There will be many spe-cial things to participate in this year for GWRRA members. We, and our Staff will do our best to keep you riding, learning and socializing with your fellow GWRRA members throughout this great State. Californias District wide game is ti-

tled Steal A Mascot (see page 12). Those of you that have been members since the early 90s probably recognize the title of this game. It has been resurrected in response to many requests that I have received over the past 8 months. Many of you will be visited at your meetings by other chapters; and in return you can visit other chapters. By traveling to other chapters, all of us have the opportunity to take part in the FUN that other chapters enjoy at their meet-ings. In return everyone can bring some of this FUN back to their chapters. We are sure that everyone that participates in this Steal A Mascot Game will end 2002 with many new friends that they didnt have at the end of 2001. Also, you will have an opportunity to explore areas of California that are new to you and practice proper group riding procedures. Californias District Educator and Assistant Educators are available to provide Group Riding and Ride Captain classes at the chapter level. First Aid & CPR are available from out District Medic First Aid trainers Phil & Pat Hanson, CD CA1V. They will also come to chapters to provide this important training. These classes can be scheduled by one or more chapters at a time. Your California District is providing these and other training needed by members to advance in the Rider Education Program. Our desire is to improve the Safe Riding experience of all GWRRA members. Remember we are here to facilitate Friends, for Fun, Safety and Knowledge.

California Wingers are Pure Gold!

Guidelines For Steal A Mascot Game This Program needs each Chapter to adopt a MASCOT to repre-sent their Chapter. The MASCOT should reflect either their Chapter Number & letter designation or what might be an accurate representa-tion of their ideals. As an example, a Chapter with the letter B may utilize a Bumble Bee for their MASCOT, or a Chapter with the letter T might use a Turkey, etc. The MASCOT must easily fit in the trunk of a Gold Wing. The object is to provide a forum for activity and compe-tition between Chapters and to interact and participate in other Chapters meetings. Initially, a MASCOT would reside at the home Chapter and would have a California Visit-A-Chapter pin attached to it. At the Chap-ter meeting, the MASCOT would be subject to CAPTURE by any other Chapter, by a very simple set of rules, listed below. The Chapter that CAPTURES a MASCOT would attach their Chapter Bar to the Visit-A-Chapter pin, each time it CAPTURES a MASCOT. The Chapter that CAPTURES a MASCOT can only keep it for 2 of its meetings before having to return it, if the owning (home) Chapter has not been able to come and RESCUE the MASCOT. The procedure would be to send it back to the owning Chapter via U.S. Mail, with a bill for the shipping and $2.00 for the Chapter Bar. Please do your best to insure that while the other Chapters MASCOTS are in your care, they do not become damaged in any way. Remember, that the object is to not rely on mailing the MASCOT back but to encourage visits between Chapters.

RULES AND HIGHLIGHTS

1. A Mascot may be CAPTURED or RESCUED only at a Chapters meeting.

2. The Chapter riding to CAPTURE another Chapters MASCOT must notify (phone) the CD or ACD at least 2 days before that Chapters meeting to determine if the MASCOT is available (no call no points).

3. A Chapter riding to RESCUE their Mascot must call the CD or ACD at least 2 days before that Chapters meeting (no call no RESCUE).

4. A Chapter may only CAPTURE the Mascot of the Chapter they are visiting, Mascots may not be CAPTURED from other Chapters.

5. A $2.00 fee (to cover the cost of the Chapter Bar) will be paid to the kidnapping Chapter when the home Chapter RESCUES their Mascot.

Page 13: Gold Wing - CA-1F

13

6. It takes 3 GWRRA members (Full or Associate member) on a minimum of 3 motorcycles to CAPTURE any Mascot. NOTE: The 3 required bikes must be driven by 3 GWRRA members. (Definition: Rider/Co-rider count if they are a Full or Associate member.)

7. It takes 4 GWRRA members (Full or Associate members) not nec-essarily on motorcycles, to RESCUE your Mascot.

8. Chapters may CAPTURE the Mascot of the Chapter that has their Mascot, on the same meeting day they are there to RESCUE their Mascot. The RESCUING chapter is required to have the additional 3 GWRRA members on 3 motorcycles required above and beyond the 4 GWRRA members used to RESCUE that Chapters Mascot. (Minimum 4 + 3 = 7)

9. The point count should be as follows: 1 Bike + 1Rider X 1Mile = 1 Point therefore 10 Bikes + 10 Riders X 10 Miles = 100 Points or 10 Bikes + 10 Riders + 10 Co-Riders X 10 Miles = 200 Points e.g. Chapter CA1M rides to CA1Q to CAPTURE 1Qs Mascot and the mileage is 50 miles. 8 motorcycles made the trip with a total of 6 GWRRA members and 6 Associates members. The total points would be 12 GWRRA members X 50 miles = 600 points. In this ex-ample, the CD of Chapter 1Q should ask to see the current GWRRA cards of the Chapter 1M participants, before awarding them the points and signing their score sheet.)

10. If more than one Chapter comes to your meeting to CAPTURE your Mascot, the Chapter with the most points gets to CAPTURE your Mascot.

11. Each Chapter will receive a score sheet. The score sheet must be given to the CD or ACD of the Chapter being visited in order to RESCUE your Mascot and receive a score. The CD or ACD will fill in the appropriate figures and sign the line those figures are on. (SIMPLE HUH).

12. This Steal A Mascot Game will start on January 1, 2002 and end on July 31, 2002. All chapters must deliver score sheets to the As-sistant District Director by August 15, 2002.

13. Prize money will be awarded to the three chapters with the highest scores.

● Highest score .............$100.00 ● Second highest score .....65.00 ● Third highest score ........35.00 14. See Mileage Chart on next page for scoring 15. The District Director will settle all disputes.

Note: The fun really begins when you have more than one Chapter at a time in attendance at your meeting and every-one starts figuring the point tally. In case you havent noticed, we have now hopefully increased the participation of more people in your Chapter, increased the cohesiveness within the member-ship, may have provided some new sto-ries and magnified the FUN margin. It also cant hurt to up the 50/50 participa-tion at each meeting.

Did you know... shampoo freezes!?! By Jeff Tichy & Tony Wells

Its been a year of learning for Tony and myself. In February 2001, well celebrate two anniversaries, four years together and one year of Wing ownership. Wing owner-ship has taught us many things. Its brought about many new saying. You want to go where when?!?, absolutely not, youll never catch me with one of those, are you

out of your mind, been there, done that, & its been a year of learning. Many of you will remember Tonys ground rules for riding. 1. No

inclement weather riding. 2. You scare me and Ill never get on that thing again. And 3. Youll always be hurt worse than me... and Ill make sure of it. Ten months and ten thousand miles later, we still ride together. Are the rules still in place... you bet. Are they still enforced... most of the time. Ten thousand miles, mostly weekends. For us, thats a lot of riding.

Rule # 3 is still strictly enforced. I will always be hurt worse than Tony (well both make sure of that). Rule # 2 gets an occasional chal-lenge followed by a couple sharp slaps on the back of my helmet and a scream through the intercom. Rule # 1 has been relaxed.

Our rides have taken us to many places, shown us many things and allowed us to meet many wonderful people, which brings me to the point of this article. On some of our first rides with the group we saw many interesting accessories go to with Wings, safety chrome, mas-cots, trailers, rain suits, electric cloths. Some of it we both looked at and agreed absolutely not, some of it I looked at and I thought, hhmmm inter-esting, some of it Tony looked at and said NO, not on my bike.

We both agreed, NO mascot. Rain suits and electric cloths were also put in the NO list since we didnt ride in inclement weather. Trail-ers: Now that brought up some interesting conversations. Thanks to Craig and Crystal Rush for loaning us theirs, it now follows us all too of-ten. Its amazing how much crap you dont need that you can pack!!

As Christmas approached and we planned some of our You want to go where, when rides, I picked up a couple rain suits, just in case. I figured the leathers would keep us warm enough as long as we stayed dry. We always looked at people with electric cloths and thought, no way, it doesnt get that cold.

A couple weeks ago, we learned a new meaning of cold. We had planned on joining my parents at their house in Palm Desert to help do some work before their snow bird tenants came in for the winter. Since it was the right weekend, I figured wed leave early Sunday morning, make a run up to Victorville and have breakfast with Chapter V.

Fridays weather was rainy and overcast and the discussions started, Do we take the Jeep or the bike? I pulled out the rain suits and

Page 19: Gold Wing - CA-1F

19

said we could still take the bike even if the weather wasnt ideal (Merry Christmas). We waited for morning before the decision was made. Sat-urday Morning, I was up at odark thirty playing weather man and checking road conditions. Forecast is clear and cold, good! Mountain pass from Anza to lookout point, chains required. I advised Tony about the clear and cold (with limited information on the snow conditions), decided were taking the bike and wed go around it via freeway. While he was getting ready, I packed the trailer.

Just before departure, final check of weather and roads. I de-cided to put on my rain suit for the extra layer of warmth, Tony reluc-tantly went along. As we approached Temecula, Tony was getting cold, so we stopped for different gloves and a scarf. Bundled up tight enough he couldnt move, we were off again.

When we pulled up to Moms house in the desert, they looked at us kind of funny.... We started peeling off layers, slowly getting warmed up in the sun, and had a great day with them. Sunday morning a couple hours before odark thirty, we were up and moving. I made a quick run to the store, so I knew it was cold. We put on everything we could before we even went outside. Off we go... thermometer at the bank in Palm Desert said 33... it was cold.

Since freeways are no fun, I decided to go around the back of the mountain to Victorville. West on 10, north on 62 to Twenty Nine Palms... Bank thermometer said 29. (And I thought 33 was cold.) Then we turned northwest on Hwy 247 to head around the mountain to Vic-torville. It just kept getting colder, and colder and colder.

About half way to Victorville, we were looking for any place that might offer warmth... no such luck... we just kept going. At 7:30, we pulled up to the chapter meeting to a surprised audience. We stopped shivering long enough to climb off the bike and greeted every-one. Everyone was gracious enough to give extra long hugs to help warm us up. No one could believe we came around the mountain on 247, and no one would reveal what the temperature was in Victorville, other than cold. The meeting was fun (but not as fun as ours), Chapter I was there promoting the Valentine ride and the 50/25/25 was good to us. We won enough to pay for our meal and gas for the weekend.

When we got home Sunday afternoon, Tony unpacked our clothes bag that was in the trailer. As he was pulling things out, he found our bottle of shampoo... fro-zen. Remember earlier I said we talked about electric cloths and it was on the NO list? Its been moved over to the Must have soon list. We hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday, and well see you on the road.

At the December Chapter Meeting, Anita and JR were awarded their Level 4 Master Tour Rider patches by our Chapter Educators, Jim & Carole Waddell. An interesting tradition has developed across the Region with all the Level 4 Riders lin-ing up and passing the patches down to the new-est achievers of Level 4 Master Tour Rider status. This not only recognizes our newest Masters, but it also gave us all a chance to transform the bubble wrap packaging of the patches to simple plastic wrap. Luv poppin them bubbles This meeting also gave Anita a chance to thank Jim and Kay for their service this past year and present our 2002 IOY, Ralph Richard-son and our COY, Larry & Marianne Villani.

Former Chapter Directors Jim & Kay Zabler

This is our last article as your Chapter Directors. Therefore, as we near the end of our tenure as Chapter Directors of CA1-F, Kay and I would like to express our thanks and grati-tude to our staff for all of their help and sup-port this past year. Along with the continued support and hard work of our staff, we extend

our heartfelt gratitude to the members of the chapter; without their par-ticipation, we couldnt have such a fine chapter and attain the level of success in all of the things we have done. We are very proud to have held this position and have seen this chapter grow in membership this past year to make CA1-F the largest chapter in California. We have increased the enrollment of the Rider Ed program. With our accomplishments, however, we mustnt get too com-fortable because there are other chapters hot on our heels to take over the lead. We need to continue to go forward and only look back to see just how far weve come. We also want to express our thanks to all of the California Chap-ters who have supported us this past year by visiting us at our monthly meetings and joining us at our Halloween Fun Run. This is what it is all about, Family, Friends and Fun. Kay and I reminisce about the many good times, the fun, the laughter, and the many, many miles we have traveled with each of you that have given us lifelong memories to cherish. Therefore, we hand over the helm (and Fox) to Anita and JR Alkire and Mike and Elma Maury

with the utmost confidence that they will bring the chap-ter to the next level of suc-cess. Ride hard, ride safe and definitely enjoy life to its fullest, every single day.

Mission Accomplished! Saved Again!

By Larry & Marianne Villani It was just another beautiful day in paradise! The sun was shinning bright, a few very high wispy clouds around, and the temperature was in the 70s. It was perfect riding weather, and there were places to eat out there! Not only was the day gorgeous but there werent even very many people/cars on the county roads! It seemed that they were all focused on the shopping Fo-cused on the Holidays So focused on

the season, they didnt even consider What if? What about It seemed that no one even thought that Christmas could be in jeopardy. After all, they had become complacent. It was just last year when that group of Wingers from CA-1F took the rumors seriously, considered the clues, scoured for leads, tackled the elements and braved the peril to make everything all right!! Christmas came last year didnt it?! Of course Dec 16th, 2001 was a special day indeed. Once again concerned Wingers banded together. Because again the rumors had abounded (and they were hungry) Was it true? Could it be? Shouldnt someone in-vestigate?! Yes, yes, YES!!! And so they did It was gooood And they ate Larrys GRINCH RIDE II took place on this faithful day. 25 dedicated, caring and concerned Wingers set out on their trusty steeds. There were a total of 16 of them in all, decorated, shiny and clean, those beautiful Wings. They set out to check, to make sure, to leave no doubt that if in fact he had returned, they would be there to do some-thing about it! Yes, they found him. High atop snow capped Mt. Palo-mar, driving through icy and perilous conditions they met the Grinch in his dominion. And that was also good And then they were able to go eat! Christmas 2001 did come as planned. Those unsung Winger heroes that gave so unselfishly on that day know, and you should know, that there is sure to be a Grinch Ride III in 2002!!

Scary Halloween Bikers Provide Christmas Wishes for Needy Kids.

By David & Dori Dirig Chapter fundraisers can take many forms from auctions to bake sales to garage sales to poker runs. One thing is universal though; they are needed to keep the chapter solvent for another year. In San Diego, CA-1F has an annual FunRun on Halloween weekend, and cos-tumes are encouraged. We have a grand time every year, and this makes a great excuse to show off the great roads we have in the area. Beyond the fun, friends, food, and great roads, we tried something a little more altruistic this year by including a charity in our FunRun proceeds. We decided in the planning stages to donate a percentage of the overall net of the event to a home for battered children in the area, Casa de Amparo (www.casadeamparo.com). Little did we know what a difference it would make for us as well as them! The poker run in October was a rousing success with over

350 people in attendance from as far away as Las Vegas, NV! It was a blast, and each year sees an even larger and better-attended FunRun. As in past years, we all had a grand time decorating the bikes and ourselves for Halloween. There were lots of interesting costumes with awards for the best in-chapter and visitor costumes. When the dust cleared, we looked up to find that we had accumulated over $1500 for our charity. We took this result to the December chapter meeting/Christmas party with the challenge of getting this result up to an even two grand to hand off to the charity after the meeting. As you can see from the photo, we had a great turn out and ride up to Casa de Amparo where we toured the facility and presented them with a check for $2000 as well as numerous other donated gifts and toys.

The September 11th attack on America has had numerous and untold conse-quences as it trickles down through our culture and economy. What we couldnt have realized in October as we put this event together was how Americans generosity to vic-tims in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington DC would actually harm other chari-ties. The administrator of Casa de Amparo, Lori Downs, told us that since Sept 11th, there had been a dearth of donations compared to past years and as a result, this would be a lean Christmas for their kids. With these events, she said, This donation is doubly appreciated. We toured the facility, presented the check and gifts, and then showed off the bikes to the kids. The teenage girls were most impressed with the ladies in our chapter who ride their own bikes. Lori was so impressed with the bikes that she went for a ride on the back of a Wing after the ceremony.

Its a happy ending, but it's not the end! We will keep this organization as our charity again for next years FunRun, and their struggles continue day-to-day. The happy ending goes even further. In the thank you note that Lori sent us, she went on to say that she enjoyed the ride on the Wing so much that she and her husband are now shopping for a Wing of their own! For more information or to donate to Casa de Amparo, see their website at www.casadeamparo.com. Please remem-ber that a lot of needy charities are struggling this year as America has focused on September 11th.
