and staff are happy, laughing and chatting in the halls throughout the day. The open door policy is well established and summer associates are encouraged to walk into any attorney’s office to speak with him or her. Each attorney I spoke with, whether it was a shareholder, associate or the managing partner, was genuinely happy to speak with me and interested in learning more about my legal interests and personal life.

If I am afforded the opportunity to return to Godfrey & Kahn, I will be so excited to come back knowing I have developed relationships with attorneys and staff throughout the summer. People say you spend more time with the people you work with than you do your own family, and I know working with the collegial, collaborative and genuinely good people at Godfrey & Kahn will make that easier.”

— Kelsey Schanke, 2017 Summer Associate

“Being a summer associate at Godfrey & Kahn gives you a first-hand experience of what it is really like to practice law. The firm does a great job of introducing you to each practice group in depth, allowing you to get a feel for what attorneys in different areas do on a day-to-day basis. You also get to work with associate attorneys all the way up to shareholders on issues that are currently facing their clients. Every attorney I have worked with at the firm presented me with interesting and challenging projects, encouraged me to seek out help, and provided me with constructive feedback.

Outside of the work, Godfrey & Kahn lets you experience their own culture and learn more about the greater Milwaukee area. Although I am originally from Minnesota, I fell in love with Milwaukee through the events that the firm hosted around the city. Milwaukee truly has all the amenities of a big-town without all the downfalls. Most importantly, it has the Midwestern charm that I have known my entire life.

That charm shines through every single person at the firm. From the staff to the attorneys, each person is welcoming and gracious with their time. I felt that each individual working at the firm was willing to help me grow and succeed in any way possible. There truly is no better way to start your legal career than in an environment like the one fostered by Godfrey & Kahn.”

Jennifer Hannon named 2017 Women in the Law recipient by the Wisconsin Law Journal

Congratulations to Jennifer Hannon, one of 29 female members of Wisconsin’s legal community to be named a 2017 recipient of the Wisconsin Law Journal’s elite Women in the Law award.

The Women in the Law award honors extraordinary women attorneys, judges and legal educators based on the following criteria:

• Women attorneys who have achieved excellence in their respective fields and have influenced other women to pursue legal careers;

• Candidates who have opened doors for women lawyers in a variety of job settings that historically were closed to women;

• Those who have advanced opportunities for women within a practice area or segment of the profession; and

• Those who have otherwise served their profession or community in a manner that has benefited the legal profession.

Jennifer is a shareholder in Godfrey & Kahn’s Estate Planning, Estate & Trust Administration Practice Group. Her practice focuses on fiduciary income taxation, estate and gift taxation, probate and trust administration, and the drafting of wills, trusts, marital agreements and other related estate planning documents.

She advises individuals, businesses, private foundations and charitable organizations on transfer tax issues and asset protection strategies through the use of split-interest trusts, irrevocable generation-skipping trusts, and other unique estate planning and business succession planning techniques. She also advises financial institutions and insurance companies on multiple states’ laws concerning guardianships, durable powers of attorney, beneficiary designations, and probate and trust administration.

Prior to her legal career, Jennifer was an enlisted member of the United States Army for eight years, serving as a combat medic.

Our entrepreneurial, team-oriented work environment and approachable office culture are just a few of the reasons we continue to receive this award. We are proud that our attorneys are making a difference in the business and legal community, and we know that all of our employees are an essential part of the success story.

LIVE UNITED and take action to address a variety of challenges. It is a day that the United Way asks the community to help put their mission into action by volunteering to improve the building blocks for a good quality of life – education, financial stability and health.

This year, volunteers from Godfrey & Kahn and the surrounding community helped create resources that focus on education and support local youth. Together, volunteers:

• Assembled 1,200 parent engagement kits that contain games, questions, resources and tools to distribute to families with youth participating in United Way funded programs to encourage positive parent-child interactions and develop healthy family relationships;

• Beautified the schoolyard by mulching the school’s new garden, planting grapevines and picking up trash to create a more aesthetic landscape that will lead to a stronger sense of school pride; and

• Refreshed four classrooms with new paint to generate an environment that is conducive to learning and has a positive psycho-physiological impact on students and staff.

Godfrey & Kahn is proud to support the United Way!

117th U.S. Open at Erin HillsSeveral attorneys attended the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills with clients to enjoy one of the world’s preeminent sporting events. The week included an opportunity to spend a full day with clients, great conversations and beautiful weather.

Summer at Godfrey & Kahn At Godfrey & Kahn we believe in a work hard, play hard lifestyle. This summer has been packed with fun activities for all. It began with our annual summer picnic which included a tailgate and viewing of the Brewers vs. the San Diego Padres game. In July, employees enjoyed a cookout on the rooftop with a sneak peek at the U.S. Navy Blue Angels as they practiced for the Milwaukee Air & Water Show and an ice cream social a week later in celebration of our eighth Top Workplace Honor.

Eastern District of Wisconsin Bar Association Honorable Charles N. Clevert, Jr. Internship Program Godfrey & Kahn participated for the fourth year in the Eastern District of Wisconsin Bar Association (EDWBA) Honorable Charles N. Clevert, Jr. Internship Program. Students age 13-16 can enter the program through Marquette Law School’s Summer Youth Institute (SYI). SYI is a week-long seminar focusing on the American legal system, and the students learn about notable cases and historical aspects chosen by their legal mentors. After completion, the students apply for a four-week internship which places students at law firms, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, corporations and judicial chambers.

This year, Godfrey & Kahn had the privilege of hosting Donald Singleton, a student from Pius XI High School in Milwaukee. His goals for the four-week internship opportunity were to learn about the legal field, gain experience reading contracts, and use his experience as a tool to excel in school. Donald achieved all three goals and more! He learned thoughtful reading when reviewing drafts, as well as critical thinking and analytical skills through his assignments. He also had the opportunity to attend team “101 lunches” with the firm’s summer associates to learn about how each practice group operates and the substantive work performed by lawyers at various levels on the team. While many of the practice groups intrigued him, Donald took the deepest interest in the Estate Planning team.

Many of the participants in the EDWBA Clevert Internship Program would not otherwise have the opportunity to benefit from this kind of unique learning experience. Godfrey & Kahn is honored to provide these opportunities and help students like Donald rise above the rest when completing the assignments associated with the internship. We wish Donald the best of success as his life journey continues through its early stages and look forward to hosting another intern next year!
