There will also be an opportunity for you to meet the Prep staff for 2018.

On Thursday, the 26th of October from 9:00 – 11:00am, we will have a Prep Orientation Session for the 2018 Prep children.

2018 INTENTIONS To assist us with 2017 planning, if you know that your child will not be returning to OLSH next year (other than current Year 6 students) please let the school office know as soon as possible.

SOCIAL MEDIA Social media is a wonderful device that allows us to keep in contact with people, as well as spreading information quickly and widely. It allows us to keep in contact with many friends and relatives that may not be physically close to us. I have written before about my cousin who has moved and married an English lady and it’s how we keep in regular contact. I have also stated that our school Facebook page is invaluable in getting messages out quickly as well as sharing information.

ADMINISTRATION

However, there is also a responsibility with social media. In the past two months, I have become aware of some people commenting on school matters on social media. These matters can only really be answered by the people who have made the decision or are responsible for implementing the decision. In the majority of cases, that is school staff. Having people other than school staff answer these questions only causes confusion and can also lead to other issues. Often people comment with the best of intentions but have the wrong information, or worse, their message maybe not clear.

The most appropriate way to have school administrative issues answered is to contact the office or speak to someone in the School Leadership Team. We do our best to ensure that our communication is relevant and timely. We do not just tell some people and not others. I often see people respond to people’s queries when I know notes have gone home, the information is in the newsletter or it’s on the parent portal.

I ask that people consider very carefully what they post on social media. As stated above, it is a wonderful resource we have, but it is not the place to solve issues.

PREP PLAYGROUND I wish to update you on the Prep Playground. Basically, all the equipment is in. The first underlay of the rubber matting is complete. It needs a few days to set before the special colouring can be added. This can only be done where there is no chance of rain. The same applies to the frame for the shade-cloth that will cover the whole playground.

Obviously, due to the weather events of this week, at the moment, this cannot take place. We will just have to be patient. it is my intention to have the new playground operational as soon as practically possible. I hope that this playground is there for the next 20 years and I want to make sure it is right, so we have to wait until things are dried out.

Meanwhile, as no construction is taking place, I have re-opened the Secret Garden in the mornings and afternoons. I will continue to keep you updated.

Congratulations Marissa

on representing OLSH at the

Qld Schools Athletics Championships!

APRE NEWS

Letter from the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart

We recently received a letter from Sr Mary Batchelor and Sr Rita Grunke thanking our school community for

our donation towards the work the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart are doing in South Sudan. Sr

Mary wrote about their continued struggle to help those who are starving and wrote that the food crisis takes

precedence over other issues such as education and health, however they still work in these areas. Sr Mary

wrote a handwritten note at the end of the letter shared below:

I see on my list of helpers that last year you sent to our mission in South Sudan the sum of $1485. That is

just wonderful! Thank you so much for your generosity and care of the poor. And it is not just a once off. You

have been supporting us for years, and the gifts you send have helped so much to provide for the needs of

the very poor, and especially right now when the country is so short of food, and many people are dying of

hunger. You are saving the lives of many, many children and that is a most wonderful thing you can do. We

are all so grateful to you and we ask God to bless you and reward you all. With much love and gratitude, Sr

Mary

Socktober - Crazy Sock Day October 27th

Each year in October OLSH supports Catholic Mission by participating in Socktober. Socktober aims to 'sock

it to poverty' to help some of the most needy and vulnerable children in the world have better opportunities in

life and a hope-filled future. The 'sock it to something' concept is an Australian expression that means to

strike out at.Catholic Mission wants help strike out social issues such as poverty, child labour, child

trafficking, homelessness and lack of education. Students will be learning about the work of Catholic Mission

in class.

OLSH are supporting this initiative by having a crazy sock day on October 27th. Students are invited to wear

crazy socks on this day (with their normal school shoes) and to bring a gold coin donation to support Catholic

Mission. As we can see from the letter above, our donations really do help others.

PASTORAL CARE NEWS

THOUGHTS FOR THE JOURNEY

I returned to O.L.S.H last week after participating in a Sabbatical Programme during the

first three terms 2017. During this time I had the opportunity to deepen my own spirituality

and relationship with God with studies in theology, scripture etc. I did this in company of

religious sisters and priests from around the world. When we first gathered as a group I

felt so much at home. It was like ‘Harmony Day’ at O.L.S.H.

In the last two weeks before I returned to school I had the absolute joy and privilege of

experiencing a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land. It was entitled “Walking In The Footsteps of

Jesus” and that is exactly what we did. I was part of a group of 29 Pilgrims, one of whom

was a Priest who was also our Chaplain. Each day we had a Mass at one of the sacred

sites.

One of the most profound experiences was being in a wooden boat on the Sea of Galilee.

When we reached the middle of the Sea which is actually like a huge lake, the engines

were stopped. The boat was rocking while we celebrated Mass. I was able to video the

waves, the creaking boat while listening to the Scriptures of Jesus calming the storm and

walking on the water. We also sang “The Galilee Song” eg

“So I leave my boats behind, leave them on familiar shores set my heart upon the deep

follow you again my Lord”.

Later that day we had the opportunity to walk along the shore line and into the water.

Feeling the water under my feet, letting it flow through my hands was such a deeply

moving experience. Nothing in that particular landscape has changed since the time of

Jesus. I was experiencing the same water, the same hills and the same shore line that

Jesus experienced.

My heart is full of the deepest gratitude for all I experienced in the Holy Land and I

believe the experience will only continue to deepen and to grow.

In every sacred site I visited I prayed for the whole O.L.S.H school community. It was

great to see all the smiling faces last week and hear the voices of the children again.

When I went to Mass at Darra on Sunday Father Carroll tapped me as he walked into

Mass and simply said “Welcome Home” and I thought “Yes I am home”.

What a great community we have at O.L.S.H.

NEWS OF THE FORTNIGHT

PREP This fortnight in Prep we have been learning about the weather in Science. We are very excited to begin this unit as this is something that we talk about and observe on a daily basis. We have been exploring the symbols that we know, why we need to know about the weather and where we can find out about it. In HSS we have been learning about features on maps. We even drew our own maps of OLSH and labelled the features we saw. We have been exploring volume and the concept of full and empty during our maths investigations. We have thoroughly enjoyed starting swimming this term too! YEAR 1 We have had a busy start to Term 4 in Year One. We have really enjoyed our swimming lessons and improving our confidence in the pool. In English we have been learning about procedures and looking at how to write a title, goal and list of materials. In Maths we have enjoyed working with hands on materials to explore multiplication and sharing. In Religion we have culminated our understanding of Baptism and the Eucharist, as well as exploring roles of people in our Parish. We are beginning to learn about space and features of the sky in Science. HASS has Year 1 exploring how life has changed from the past to present. YEAR 2 We have settled back into the term and the children are working hard. The first two weeks of term four have been busy! Swimming lessons are going well and the children are very enthusiastic. In Religion, we have been looking at the Jesus’s Mission of teaching, healing and forgiving. We have looked at several stories from the Gospel including Jesus Walks on Water, Jesus Heals the Two Blind Men and the Unforgiving Servant. In English, we are looking at the structure of Persuasive Texts and learning about the difference between fact and opinion. In Maths, the children have been arranging numbers into equal groups together with identifying amounts left over from sharing situations. We welcome Mr Lynn back this term. He is teaching 2 Red again until the end of week 6. YEAR 3 The last couple of weeks have flown by in Year Three. In Religion, we are learning about the history of our local parish. In Maths, we have been adding, ordering and partitioning four digit numbers. In English lessons, we are listening to a novel by Roald Dahl named Dirty Beasts. We have been looking at the many characters in this story and the words and phrases that the author has used to describe them.

We are looking in particular at poetry and are busy practising poems which we will be presenting to our peers. In Health we have been discussing how we can care for our planet by living more sustainably. YEAR 4 In Year 4 life is very busy with fantastic learning. We are tackling difficult word problems in Maths and really getting good at division. In English we are investigating how to deconstruct and write ads using persuasive language. Science has revolved around the structure of living things and life cycles. In Religion, we are analysing and solving moral dilemmas. We have also started work on our Virtues Assembly for next week and it will give the school a great message about helping others. YEAR 5 Term 4 has started off very well and, with swimming and canoeing, students are certainly burning off some energy. It has been wonderful to observe the excitement and enthusiasm shown in our new unit in English...POETRY! Many students have eagerly composed limerick, acrostic, shape and ode poems. All Year 5 students made their teachers proud and entertained students and staff with their performance of "Gran Can You Rap" in last week's assembly. In Maths, we have been exploring probability and the likelihood of outcomes as well as transformations of 2-D shapes highlighting the words "translate", "reflect" and "rotate". Discussions in Science have been based on the states of matter (solids, liquids and gases) and students have begun to identify key properties and connections. Following our work in HASS on Civics and Citizenship, students are now considering the behaviours and values that a good school leader at OLSH should have. YEAR 6 Year 6 have started their last term of primary school with swimming and dance fever. The children have been learning many skills in the pool on how to dive or perfect their swimming strokes. Dance fever has challenged many of the children’s coordination, however, all have enjoyed themselves and learnt new dance moves. It will be exciting to see it all come together for their graduation. English this term is all about narratives and creative writing. The students have been exploring many picture books to depict the narrative structure and how the author plans their writing. In Science students have been designing and constructing electrical circuits.

Good luck Marissa!

Dear Parents,

My name is Linda Allen. For those parents who don’t know me – I am a former teacher at OLSH

School.

For a number of years I have been collecting used postage stamps and used Christmas cards which

can be recycled to help the less fortunate. The stamps are processed, sold to a stamp dealer and all

funds raised are sent to the Mary MacKillop International Missions Fund which provides education for

poor children in Peru and also funds training for poor women in Peru to learn useful crafts so that they

can increase their income – a hand up, not a hand out. In 2016, approximately $62,000 was raised for

this work through the sale of stamps. This ministry is run solely by volunteers so all funds raised are put

to good use in Peru. All I ask is that you do not cut the stamps – just send the envelopes in to the

school office. The stamps need to be cut by me according to the stamp dealer’s specifications. For your

information – it takes approximately 4,250 stamps to make a kilogram. A kilo of domestic stamps raises

$16 and a kilo of foreign stamps raises $18.

The used Christmas cards are cut down to make Christmas gift tags and bookmarks and these will be

sold in the parish closer to Christmas. All funds raised will be given to the Darra-Jindalee SVDP Con-

ference and St Mary’s SVDP Conference (Ipswich). Both these appeals are ongoing and have been go-

ing for nearly 20 years. It doesn’t matter whether you have a few stamps/cards or a lot – collectively

your contribution will make a difference to someone in need.

Thank you for taking the time to read this notice and I look forward to your support.

God bless,

Linda Allen
