This is a special graduation ceremony in that it is the fitting culmination of this Medical School's centennial year celebration. Over the past 100 years we have created a tradition of excellence in the education of physicians. Minnesota has been at the forefront of modem medicine every year for the past century, and we will continue to be. With the graduation of the Class of 1989 we again make a major contribution to the world of medicine. These graduates have accomplished what few people can. They have successfully completed one of the toughest curriculums of any profession. These ceremonies honor them and their accomplishments.

The ceremony to create a doctor has many traditions. The most important is the "Oath for New Physicians". Through the ages, physicians were brought into the profession by reciting the Hippocratic Oath, a tradition dating back to the 4th century B.C. In recent years, this oath has been modified to reflect scientific advances and philosophical changes that affect the practice of modem medicine.

The second tradition you will witness today is the donning of the hoods. This is an academic tradition. The student will be given a hood made with the school colors. Surrounding the hood is a border of velvet, the color of which is specific for the profession into which the student is graduating. In our case, the hood will be maroon and gold, the colors of the University of Minnesota; the border will be green, the color of medicine.

Part of our ceremony is to honor the alumni from fifty years ago who have come back to help us pay tribute to our graduating physicians. We honor the graduates of the past, acknowledging the agelong tradition of medicine, and we honor those who will carry the tradition forward into the future. Participation of the faculty, administration and alumni from fifty years ago signifies the continuing involvement of teachers, practitioners and academicians with their students and the profession of medicine.

These traditions come together to make a unique ceremony which only a few people are ever privileged to witness. The graduation of these students signifies continuation of our commitment to the provision of outstanding health care for individual patients and our ongoing dedication to the health and welfare of humanity.

Welcome.

PLEASE REMAIN SEATED DURING THE RECESSIONAL

OATH FOR NEW PHYSICIANS

In the tradition of Hippocrates and the men and women through the ages who have dedicated their lives to the art and science of medicine I make the following pledge:

The respect, dignity of patients and the confidential nature of our relationship is foremost in my service to them. I will value their lives as I value my own.

I acknowledge my limitations and need for continued education. I will seek the knowledge and inspiration of my colleagues, friends and patients.

My work shall be dedicated to improving the quality of life for those who seek my assistance. I will honor the wishes and needs of the patient, recognizing that death is not always an enemy. I will do no harm.

I will strive always to improve the practice of medicine, to provide a level of care that is ethical, moral and just. I expect the same standards from my colleagues and will not tolerate their indifference, greed or unethical behavior.

My profession is an honored one. I will not violate the trust society has placed in me by allowing religion, race or creed to affect my judgment or ability to take care of patients. I will be humble .

I will consider the tools of my profession to be knowledge, compassion and patience. I will share these tools freely with my colleagues and patients alike.

The aged, the poor and the mentally ill are vulnerable members of society. I shall do my utmost to provide them the care and attention they need to assure their health, dignity, and protection. I see all life as sacred.

In the presence of my teachers, my family and my friends I make these promises solemnly and freely. With this oath I willingly assume the rewards and responsibilities of a physician.

The University of Minnesota is committed to the policy that all persons shall have equal access to its programs, facilities, and employment without regard to race, religion, color, sex, national origin, handicap, age or veteran status.

This book is not an official record of graduation from Medical School. The degree of Doctor of Medicine is officially granted by the Board of Regents on the date ending the academic quarter in which degree requirements are completed, which this year will be June 10, 1989.

Classmate and Friend

Those who meet as strangers And part as friends

Hold between them something special It is simply each other

The gift of a friend Shall not be forgotten

But held close and deeply cherished

Academic Costume

Academic costume - cap, gown, and sometimes hood - may be worn by anyone with a college degree, or by a candidate whose degree is soon to be awarded. Characteristics of cost umes show their wearers' highest degrees and, often, the fields of major interest and the institutions by which the degrees are granted.

All bachelors' and masters' gowns are black and untrimmed. The bachelor's gown has a long pointed sleeve, the master's a closed sleeve with an arm slit. Doctors' gowns in the United States are usually black, with velvet front facings and sleeve crossbars. Some universities, especially those abroad, prescribe colorful crimson, bright red, or other colors, set off by black or colored facings .

At co=encements, degree candidates wear the gowns for the degrees they are about to receive. Hoods are worn only by those who already possess degrees. Anyone who has a University of Minnesota degree may wear the Minnesota hoodblack with a maroon chevron on gold. The length and shape of a hood identify the most advanced degree its wearer has earned, and the hood's velvet edging shows the degree's field: dark blue for philosophy, light blue for education, green for medicine, lilac for dentistry, orange for engineering, russet for forestry, drab for business, olive green for pharmacy, purple for law, gray for veterinary medicine, golden yellow for science, white for liberal arts.

Caps - usually tasseled mortarboards - show by tassel color the nature of degrees awarded at University of Minnesota co=encements. Doctors' tassels may be black or gold; masters' are black. Bachelor's degree candidates at Minnesota, however, indicate their fields of study by their tassel colors:

College of Agriculture ......... .... ...... . ... ... ......... .. .... .. ...... .... maize College of Biological Sciences .. ... .. .... .. .... .... ... ... ...... golden yellow Continuing Education and Extension .......... ........ orange and drab School of Dentistry ..... .. ..... ... .. .. ... ...... ... ..... .. .. ... ... .. ... ... ... .. . .lilac College of Education ... ............ .. ........ ... ..... .... .... ..... .... .. light blue College of Forestry .. .. .... ..... ..... .... .. .. ...... .. .. ... ... ..... .. .. ... .... maize General College .......... ..... ... ... .. .... .... .. ..... ...... crimson and white College of Home Economics ............... ..... ....... ...... ... ... ...... maize Law School .. ...... .... ...... .. ....... .... ................ ...... .. .. .... . ...... purple College of Liberal Arts ... ........ .. ... ..... .... .. ........ ....... . .. .... ..... white School of Management .. .. ....... ....... .. .. .... .. .. ... ... ....... . ...... .... . drab Medical School .. ...... ... .. ............ ... .... .. ..... . .-.. .... ... .... .. ...... .. green School of Nursing ............. ..... .... .. ... .. ..... ......... ... .... ..... . .... green College of Pharmacy .. ....... ... ... .. ...... ... ............. ......... .. ... .... . olive School of Public Health .. .. ... ........ .. ... ... ... .. ........ .... .... ... .... .. green Institute of Technology ...... ................. .. ... ....... .......... ...... orange University College ............ .... ..... ...... ... ....... .... old gold and white College of Veterinary Medicine .. ..... .... ... ... .... ...... ... ..... ........ gray

Gold shoulder epaulets are worn by candidates who are honor students.

After receiving their degrees, holders may wear the academic costume on any appropriate occasion, but they always wear the black tassel and omit the shoulder insignia. Appropriate academic costumes can be obtained anywhere that academic ceremonies are conducted.
