After completing 18 holes in weather conditions best described as classic Melbourne - four seasons in one day - the local host submitted his autoscore card to the scanner with a stableford tally of 32 points. Whilst not overly remarkable, the result was sufficient to take out the strongly contested NSW Salver from Garrick Aird (Mt Barker) and Damien Geyer (Barossa Valley) by one shot. Gay’s result was also good enough to carry himself and Vice Captain, Angus McLachlan, to victory in the GMA Challenge Trophy with a Better Ball score of 43 points, clearly making best use of their home course advantage. Some might say unfairly, with others simply conceding defeat to the mighty Royals. Mt Osmond’s Mark Tan almost stole the glory from the locals, selfishly accepting Longest Drive and Nearest the Pin prizes, although he kindly shared the spoils with West Lakes’ Paul Curtis who took out a NTP prize on the famous 12th hole at the Seaton layout. Gay takes out NSW SalverDespite contending with a golf course underwater and weather conditions best suited to an Antarctic explorer, the 2012 GMA Challenge finally proceded at its traditional home at Seaton’s Royal Adelaide links.

Unthinkable weather conditions saw the postponement of the event for a week when it was reported via email that the practice fairway and first fairway at Adelaide’s only royal links was literally a swimming pool.

However, the natural sandy soils saw the course make a remarkable recovery, ready for competition play one week later on Friday, 29th June 2012.

Amazingly, despite the stresses faced by the local host, Andrew Gay saw it best to complete an outstanding result, taking out the NSW Salver in an astonishingly good display of golf given the horrific weather conditions faced by contenders.

After completing 18 holes in weather conditions best described as classic Melbourne - four seasons in one day - the local host submitted his autoscore card to the

scanner with a stableford tally of 32 points.

Despite the horrendous weather conditions, the event was again a complete success with lunch the preferred option for attendees with another outstanding fare provided by the staff at Adelaide’s royal links.

From the PresidentAndrew Gay (Royal Adelaide Golf Club)

Latest media platforms like websites and regular E-News’ should make communicating with our members more effective. Why is it then that we still struggle to get the information across?

GMAQ has even ventured into social media platforms like LinkedIn and Facebook in an attempt to communicate better with their members. Perhaps our inbox is getting inundated with too much information from LinkedIn, Facebook, Golf related E-News’, newsletters from our own golf clubs etc., etc.

I’m not sure how many of you visit the GMA website regularly but I would be keen to hear ideas to improve the frequency of your visits to the website.

Anyway, in an effort to improve communications and “share the love” we have decided to produce an electronic newsletter to keep everyone up to speed on happenings within GMASA. Our knowledge of what is happening outside of our clubs is invaluable in the decision making process happening at clubs everywhere.

The introduction of some new faces to the executive at the last GMASA AGM gave us the opportunity of reassessing the roles within the Executive. Listed below are the responsibilities of the various executive members:

Andrew Gay | Sponsorship, Education David Brand | Communications Alastair McLean | Golf Mark Tan | Membership Paul Curtis | Finance Denise Henly | Secretarial, Archives

Enjoy this newsletter and I look forward to analysing the future with you at our next business meeting with Futurist Dr Kristin Alford. Whilst this session will be a little different and require thinking “outside the square” I am confident everyone will come away with tools that can be implemented into your committee’s strategic thinking. Just one of the many benefits of being a GMASA member.

I thank David for his efforts and trust you all enjoy the read.

The inaugural South Australian Golf Industry Awards night was an excellent addition to the calendar last year with everyone in attendance thoroughly enjoying the evening.

I personally consider events like this important in lifting the general profile of golf and those that work and volunteer at clubs all over the state.

Whilst we all understand the value in networking, this event allowed us the opportunity to network with follow managers, superintendents, golf professionals, volunteers and state body administrators.

Shortly I will be writing to your Captain/ President asking them to consider nominating you for the “Manager of the Year” award.

I will be asking them to consider amongst other things the following:

Club achievements in the past 12 months, and in particular those above

and beyond the normal role of a GM;

Tenure at their Club;

Their level of respect amongst their industry peers (Fellow GMA Members/General Managers);

Any contribution to the Golf Industry above and beyond their Club role;

Involvement with GMA events and programs.

If nothing else, it might give your Captain or President a better understanding of what you actually do within your club and golf industry.

I would also ask that you consider nominating an employee and any worthy volunteers for consideration in this year’s awards.

Whilst I certainly look forward to sharing a glass of wine with you on the night, I am confident you won’t see me on the dance floor grooving to our band, The Holeproofs!

The weather gods proved kind for the eagerly awaited GMASA visit to the Copperclub at Port Hughes to try out the brand new Greg Norman designed Dunes golf course.

And the hosts did not disappoint with a course presented in outstanding condition given it had only been open since mid-2011.

First comments back from players indicated they had just putted on the best greens ever - and the other playing surfaces were not much different. It was a struggle for some players adapting to greens running at approximately 13 on the stimp meter – in fact the group may as well be putting at Augusta National in the US Masters! There were reports of jugs galore as player after player found themselves going back and forth more than three times whilst putting on the greens – and sometimes trying to chip back onto the greens!

However, despite the difficulties faced by some players, two stood out from the rest. In a tight battle for the trophy, South Lakes Manager Alan Tarry took out the title with 18 points for the 9-hole competition, on

a countback from Programmed Property Services representative and GMASA sponsor, Almir Djemailovic. Former Flagstaff Hill manager, Mike Greening, took out the nearest the pin on the 4th hole after knocking it inside Paul Sutcliffe, who claimed his shot was closer (unfortunately for him, it was closer – to the red flag – not the black flag he was supposed to be aiming for!)

GMASA would like to thank Barry West and Steven Kent, and their staff at The Dunes for an outstanding day of fun, games, food and most importantly, quality company and red wine.

GMA is pleased to announce confirmation of a two year partnership agreement with Club Car, as a leader in supply of Fleet Golf Cars.

Active in Australia since 1979, Club Car has 4 independent distributors across the country with major centres in Melbourne, Sydney, Gold Coast, Townsville, Perth and Adelaide supported by dealers in regional areas.

“Club Car is thrilled to be the Exclusive Partner for fleet golf cars of GMA,” commented Kevin Gates (pictured above), Vice President (Asia/Pacific) for Club Car. “The strong focus of GMA on professional development, expansion of the game and enhancing the quality of management within our industry aligns well with our corporate goals.

“I’m looking forward to sharing educational resources and supporting the efforts of the organisation. Golf managers in Australia will continue to play a central role in the ongoing growth and consolidation of our business in this country.”

During a recent visit to Australia, Club Car President and CEO Marc Dufour agreed, “This partnership is testimony to the value

we place on the contribution GMA members have made to Club Car’s success in this country. ”As GMA endeavours to provide Managers with the education, tools and resources to become better managers and improve club performance, Club Car strive to do the same in their line of golf cars and work vehicles. Their new technology, modern design and reputation for quality and service fit very well with the objectives of club operations in Australia.
