Performance improvementAdvanced and safe arc spray outward-oriented design
Circuit-breaker is a kind of protective electrical installation,
which protects lines and equipment from damage due to short-
circuit, especially from personal injure, so it must meet high safety
design standard. In former applications, people often injured
by flashover because of the unreasonable arc spray outward-
oriented design. In order to avoid these accidents, GM8 series
circuit-breakers adopt the advanced patent technique of arc spray
outward-oriented design to provide a reliable protection for users.
Arc spray outward-oriented: it is known that the high dense
high-temperature ion and electron would spread into the low
density and low-temperature medium. So, in the period of arc
generate to extinguished, after it passed arc extinguish chamber
and continues to spray out of circuit-breaker, this time, the oriented
structure can give an out-spray direction to it.
Arc temperature: the temperature of the arc can up to
5000~8000
The backward arc-oriented design and its harm
In figure1, a insulating paper (Nomex) be mounted above
the arc extinguish chamber of circuit-breaker. At the usual time,
the elastic insulating paper can protect against foreign body drop
into circuit-breaker. But when short-circuit occurs, the paper will be
bounced outward because of the spraying high temperature and
pressure gas generated by flashover, and the arc will be spray
forward out of circuit-breaker along the paper surface. At this
time, if somebody is closed to the handle or the jet orice is near
the mental cabinet, burn accident or another short-circuit will be
happened.
Why the arc-oriented structures are designed spraying
forward instead of upward in some factories? The long tripping
breaking time, bad current-limiting capacity and long out-
spray(upward) distance are the main reasons for these products.
Due to the ashover distance requirement of above circuit-breaker
can not exceed 50~100mm in IEC60947-2, they design the
ashover forward, but backward and unsafe.
The harmfulness of ashover spraying forward are:
1. Result in that the arcs connect together and misoperation
of upper stage (as gure1)
Usually, there aren't interphase barriers at the front of circuit-
breaker (the plane), if a short-circuit fault happened, ashover out
of each pole is spraying forward, the arc from two adjoining poles
will connect together and lead to a short-circuit at lead-in side,
cause a misoperation of the upper stage, result in an expanding
fault; Meanwhile, It can burn the cabinet and cause a human injury
accident.
2. Circuit-breakers mounted in an open cabinet
If a short-circuit has been exit in circuit, operators will be
injured by ashover sprayed to them when they close to the circuit-
breaker. Because the circuit-breaker will trip due to short-circuit
and spray ashover outward, however, the ashover will be spray
to operator because of the oriented effect of Nomex insulating
paper.(as gure2)
3. Circuit-breakers mounted in a closed cabinet
When there is a short-circuit current in system, the moveable
and static contacts breaking, and arcs generated in each pole
spray forward and connect together by mental cabinet will lead to
an interphase short-circuit, at last, cause a false action of upper
stage circuit-breaker. The arcs spraying to mental enclosure will
generate high temperature to melt down the mental cabinet, and
someone stands front of it will be hurt and cause a safety accident.
4. Circuit-breakers equip with manual or motor-driven
operation device
The four mounting feet of manual or motor-driven operation
device are mounted in the middle of three-phase lead-in side. The
arcs which spray forward and pass the mental mounting feet will
cause a interphase short-circuit again at the lead-in side and lead
to a false action of upper stage circuit-breaker. Arcs spraying to
manual operation device will generate high temperature to melt
down the enclosure of drawer, someone will be shock if his hand
or body contacts the cabinet.
GM8 advanced arc spray outward-oriented design
The arc spraying direction of our advanced circuit-breaker is
designed upward but not forward, it avoids the above safety risk
of those backward circuit-breakers. More details see GM8 series

control system,so it can quench arc effectively and realize
the zero-ashover easily.
Protection degree IP30Special protective cover can stop any objects with
the diameter of 2.5 mm into the internal of enclosure, the
protection degree could up to IP 30.
Novel contact systemGM8 series circuit-breaker adopts a special designed contact system, which possesses
some merits such as strong repulsion and long open range.
When the circuit-breaker is making:
Movable contact bear a tension and a repulsion as well, named FIac and FIbc
respectively.
Static contact bears two repulsions, named FIab and FIbc respectively.
When the short-circuit current reaches the acting value of the instantaneous release, the
above-mentioned forces will accelerate the speed of moving /static contact arc, increase the
arc length and make the arc quenching easier.
The innovative design of the bidirectional repelling system breakthrough the limitations
of traditional design, that is moving contact upward moving and static contact xed. Then the
opening range between moving contact and static contact is increased greatly.
By adopting this contact system, which has big repulsion and long opening range, GM8
series circuit-breaker is more easily to quench the arc, so it has a higher current-limit ability
and short-circuit breaking capacity.

The novel external controller
The traditional systemWhen the customers have a higher requirement of
maintainability and safety to the low voltage distribution systems, they will spend extra money to purchase the intelligent circuit-breaker installed in the distribution
cabinet. One of their main purposes is: adjust the acting parameters by the adjustment button on the panel of intelligent circuit-breaker.
Whereas, according to investigations, we found that the adjustment acting parameters is very difcult to realize. The reason lies in the external operating device (manual or motor-driven), an accessory which is widely used in the low voltage distribution cabinet.
The handle is installed in the drawer of the circuit-breaker. As a result, the customers cant reach the adjustment panel, so the adjustment function is no-way to achieve.
The price of intelligent circuit-breaker is 2 or 3 times higher than the normal thermomagnetic circuit-breaker which parameters are nonadjustable. It is absolutely a huge waste if the adjustment function cant work.
The new system adopting external controllerIn order to solve the mentioned problem above,
the intelligent controller of GM8-Zs series (belonging to GM8-Z) is external of the circuit-breaker, and connects with circuit-breaker by date lines.
The ex terna l cont ro l le r adopts the same dimensions as the panel amperemeter, it can display the three phase current. So the clients could adjust the parameters on the drawer panel conveniently.
The external control ler doesn t need any additional power supply and any auxiliaries, it can realize the following functions:
Adjust all the acting parameters real time during the application process;

in a magnetic yoke type, its rated acting current is 20Inm (where Inm is frame size). The back-up
protection release plays important roles in the following two aspects:
(1) The back-up protection release will acting before the electronic release when the short-circuit

or foreign matters drop into the circuit-
breakers after accessories installation.
Because o f a l l these accessor ies '
installation process is:
Step 1: Press down the button "Trip"
to make circuit-breaker tripping;
Step 2: Twist off all big screws on the
cover of circuit-breaker (In general, there
are 8-12 big screws, so we need spend
more time and bigger torque to do it.);
Step 3: Open the cover of circuit-
breaker (At this time, all parts in circuit-
breaker are exposed and arc extinguishers
always drop out.);
Step 4: Install the accessories (During
installing, some important parts of circuit-
breakers, like tripping device and bimetal
element, maybe touched unexpected, so
their position will be changed and then
affect the operation characteristic of circuit-
breakers, sometimes operator's arms also
be hurt and foreign matters easily drop
into circuit-breaker, such as cable head);
Step 5: Close the cover of circuit-
breaker (in order to make sure the cover
and body of circuit-breaker matched well,
the accessories and internal parts must be
at the correct position.);
Step 6: Turn all the screws on cover
tight (All screws must be tighten, otherwise
it will affect the safety of circuit-breaker.
When there is a short-circuit current, the
high temperature and high pressure arc
gas generated by movable and static
contacts breaking may push off the cover
and cause safety accidents.)
On the whole, we can clearly find
that above installation method not only
inf luences the safety and operation
characteristics of circuit-breaker, but also
inconvenient to operation. At the same
time, the normal functions of accessories
will be affected if they are installed at an
incorrect position or match with the circuit-

GM8 adopts a double layer insulation handle to guarantee the absolute

Modulization of communication functions
GM8-T series (also belonging to GM series circuit-breaker) is a communicative product. The communication accessories includes: external communication module, RS485 interface extended plate, communication controller and series of conguration software. The external communication module is connected to the circuit-breaker. The clients can conveniently build the communication net consistent with the MODBUS protocol, the schematic diagram as follows

Communication protocol
Field-bus protocol MODBUS-RTU is comply with the international standard IEC61158. The physical layer electrical interface is the serial RS485, which consistent with the international standard TIA/EIA-485-A. The date frame format is 1 start bit, 8 date bits, 2 stop bits, none verification (Including odd and even verifying). The report format is address code (1 bit), function code (1 bit), date domain (maximum 252 bits), CRC verication (2 bits).
Network characteristics
The communication medium is double-wiring shielded line. Each communication line can connect with 32 devices at the maximum and with 1000 meters at its longest distance. A repeater is needed if the distance is exceeded than 1000 meters, and a brancher has to be adopted if there is a branch.The standard band rate is 19200bps (could be set to 9600bps or 38400bps). Besides, all the devices connected to the same bus must share the same band rate and parity check, and the address of the slave station cant repeat.When there are too many devices connected to the bus, a RS485 adapter is needed to connect more devices. The devices in one slave station cant exceed 247 in the MODBUS communication system.
Communication controller
The communication controller is connected with the circuit-breaker by special communication lines. The controller can set the parameters (slave-station address, communication bond rate, current parameter, tripping parameter), display the parameters, electric switching control, display warning (overload, short-circuit fault) and communication (local and remote communication). The communication controller doesnt need external power supply and consequently is very convenient to be installed in the distribution cabinet. The controller will automatically scan the circumscribed devices when turned on and build a dynamic address list. The limitation is no more than 32 devices. The controller can achieve remote communication by connecting it to the remote monitoring computer.
Remote communication
By connecting the circuit-breaker and monitoring computer with double-wiring shielded line and RS485 converter. To set, display and communicate locally and remotely, we should connect the controller with the circuit-breaker before it was connected to the remote monitoring computer.
I f the circui t-breaker adopts electr ic operating device, the remote control can achieve. If adopt network instruments, remote measurement of the electrical parameters can achieve.Due to adopting the standard protocol MODBUS-RTU, the controller can be further interfaced with the industrial Ethernet.

The moni tor ing computer can adopt c o n f i g u r a t i o n s o f t w a r e t o a c h i e v e t h e management of power and distribution systems.The conguration software is usually customized mode. Application range
GM8-Z series moulded case circuit-
breakers are one of the new type circuit-
breakers which have been developed
using international advanced design and
manufacturing technology, menwhile, the
circuit-breaker complies with the demands
of the new international standards. The
rated insulation voltage of the circuit-
breakers is 800V, which could be used in
the circuit of AC 50Hz, rated operational
voltage 400V or 690V and rated operational
current 16A-800A, where the circuit-
breakers take the role of infrequent closing/
opening. The circuit-breaker has over-
load long-time delay, short-circuit short-
time delay and under-voltage protection
functions, so it can protect the distribution
circuit and the power equipment from
damage.

According to rated ultimate short-
circuit breaking capacity, GM8-Z series
circuit-breakers can be classied into three
categories: H higher type (50KA) ; R high
type (70KA) ;G highest type (80~100KA) .
