Glorifying God through obedience

In Exodus 24, God instructed Moses during his 40-day stay on Mount Sinai to build the Tabernacle and an Ark. The Ark is commonly known to us as the “Ark of the Covenant”. The Ark of the Covenant, which served as a physical manifestation of God’s presence on earth, was an important religious symbol to the Israelites. The Ark could only be carried by the Levitical priests who were sanctified and set apart by God (Joshua 3:2-3).

God used the Ark as an indicator of when He wanted the Israelites to travel and when they should stop as they travelled through the wilderness into the Promised Land. The Israelites also went to the Ark to seek God's guidance and wisdom for the nation (Numbers 7:89).

On several occasions, God also allowed the Ark to be brought into battle and the Israelites won their battles with resounding victories (Numbers 10:35, Joshua 6:6). However, in 1 Samuel 4:10, we read for the first time that the Israelites lost to their enemies despite bringing the Ark into battle. Their losses were very significant. About thirty thousand foot soldiers lost their lives. On top of that, the Ark was captured. Eli, the priest, upon hearing that the Ark was captured, fell back, broke his neck and died. His sons, Hopni and Phinehas, were both killed on the same day.

Why did the Israelites lose despite bringing the Ark into the battle?

Knowing who God really is While God told Moses and Joshua to set forth the Ark into battle, this was not the case for the Israelites in 1 Samuel 4. After they lost their first engagement with the Philistines, they were more interested in finding out the external root cause for their failure than in questioning their own attitude and faith. They concluded that they needed to involve God by bringing the Ark into the next battle. None of the elders sought God’s will about going into the next battle, much less how to go about it. In effect, the

Israelites thought that they had God in a spot. They believed that God would have to protect them to protect His own honour. How wrong they were! The Israelites were taught two important lessons that day. God would rather suffer shame than allow them to continue in a false relationship with Him, and He would allow His people to be disappointed with Him if it would awaken them to the sort of God He really was [1]. This is a reminder to us that we cannot manipulate God through our church attendance, ministries, Bible studies, prayers, tithes, and offerings.

Our obedience matters As we read 1 Samuel 4:5, we sense the strong confidence of the Israelites in their Ark. So strong was their confidence that their shout literally shook the ground. However, their confidence was short-lived and they paid a heavy price: the lives of thirty thousand foot soldiers. They were under the terrible delusion that they could still lay hold of God’s promises while ignoring His demands of the covenant. Hopni and Phinehas, both unbelievers (1 Samuel 2:12) and warned by God of the coming judgment years before (1 Samuel 2:34), thought that they could escape judgment and reap the rewards of victory. They were killed for their disobedience. We cannot have Jesus Christ as our Saviour without having Him as our Lord.

The glory of God 1 Samuel 4 ends on a sad note. The wife of Phinehas went into pre-mature labour and died after giving birth to a son. While the Israelites and the two brothers were using the Ark as a lucky charm and Eli was concerned for the safety of the Ark, Phinehas’ wife showed the most spiritual insight. She was burdened for the glory of God and thus named her son “Ichabod” – “the glory is gone” – before she died[2]. It is a stark reminder to us to examine our lives. Recall Jesus’ prayer for His disciples in John 17:20-23: “The glory that you have given me I have given to them”. Our obedience and submission to God are intricately intertwined with His glory.

All of us belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ have a responsibility to show forth God’s glory. May God help us to live our lives in complete obedience and submission to Him for His Glory. Reflection Questions: When you face difficult challenges and/or obstacles in your life, what is your natural response? Do you have a tendency to take things into your own hands and attempt to sort things out by yourself?

“Having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.” (2 Tim 3:5). Do you find yourself trapped in a web of religious piety and practices, without experiencing the real power and deliverance of the Lord Jesus? What do you think you need to do to free yourself? 7
