Aquaculture farming is one of the world’s fastest growing forms of agriculture.
At the same time, consumers everywhere are looking for food that is farmed responsibly in ecologically sound conditions.
GLOBALG.A.P. enables producers and brand owners to provide that reassurance with confi dence. Our stan-dard is a universal mark of Good Aquaculture Practice,
and encourages the production and marketing of safe food while protecting scarce resources.
The GLOBALG.A.P. Aquaculture Standard covers the entire production chain, from broodstock, seedlings and feed suppliers to farming, harvesting and process-ing. It acts as a practical manual for any aquaculture producer, ensuring food safety, minimal environmental impact and compliance with animal welfare and worker health and safety requirements.

Every certifi ed legal entity in the supply chain receives a unique GLOBALG.A.P. Number (GGN). In the event that a single legal entity integrates all production steps, from feed manufacturing to post-harvest activities, all certifi ca-tion information will be stored under a single GGN.
If several legal entities are certifi ed they receive different certifi cates and different GGNs that are interlinked in the GLOBALG.A.P. Database.

All GGNs can then be verifi ed online through the public search tool on the new website, which includes consumer information for the fi rst time.

The GLOBALG.A.P. Aquaculture Standard sets criteria for legal compliance, food safety, animal and workers welfare, and environmental and ecological care.
The new Version 4 is the result of four years of research and consultation. Released in March 2011, it covers a much greater diversity of fish, crustaceans and molluscs and now extends to all hatchery-based farmed species, as well as the passive collection of seedlings in the planktonic phase.
WhaT Is gLoBaLg.a.P. aquacuLTurE?
Our Technical Committee on Aquaculture incorporates members from both trade and production. Throughout the four-year period they obtained feedback from 500 stakeholders worldwide.
These stakeholders represented 116 organizations, among them those with direct industry involvement such as suppliers, farmers, producer organizations, retailers, scheme owners and the food service sector. Contributors with administrative and technical inter-ests included certification bodies, research centers,
universities, NGOs, our National Technical Working Groups, consultants, the animal health industry and metrology institutes.
Throughout all drafts up to the final version, the committee used the FAO Technical Guidelines on Aquaculture Certification as a reference.
The result is a version, which provides a more compact and comprehensible standard for users, with new criteria resulting in a stricter level of compliance.
In addition, all GLOBALG.A.P. certified products automatically undergo an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) as an integral part of the process. This, as well as meeting the demands of their specific standard, ensures that aquaculture farms show special consideration for animal welfare and the effects of farming practices on their immediate surroundings.

GLOBALG.A.P. operates in more than 100 countries, working with certification bodies accredited according to ISO 65. Thanks to this global spread, producers all over the world can choose from a wide range of experts to carry out their annual independent farm audits.
To make sure these audits maintain the highest standards, GLOBALG.A.P. runs a world-leading and innovative integrity program. So, as well as having to
INTEgrITy aLL ThE Way
satisfy high qualification requirements, auditors take part in regular basic and advanced training.
Furthermore, as a regular part of the program, trained GLOBALG.A.P. specialist staff actually audit the audi-tors - both at certification bodies’ offices and during farm inspections. It is a program that underpins the funda-mental quality of GLOBALG.A.P. Certification - and helps the system grow continuously in strength and reliability.
Certification of the supply chain - the Chain of Custody - is an important part of the GLOBALG.A.P. Aquaculture Standard. It identifies the certification status of the product through the entire process, from producer to retail counter.
Chain of Custody elements include, for example, hygiene requirements in handling certified products, and proper segregation of certified and non-certified items in processing operation units. The Chain of Custody can be checked through the GLOBALG.A.P.
Number (GGN). This is a unique identifier for the individual producer, designed to enable the origin of the farmed product, the processing, the packing and the storage to be traced. It even allows the distributor to print the GGN on the consumer packaging.
The website www.my-fish.info, offers consumer informa-tion on aquaculture, it contains further information which may be printed on packaging. Consumers going directly to this site can search for producers by typing in the GGN.
