GINKO BILOBA
RESEARCH QUESTION: How to revive the old part of the town Karlovac also known as Zvijezda (eng.
Star)?
ASSUMPTION:
Karlovac is a city of parks, therefore there should be a plant species interesting for visitors of
Zvijezda.
Vrbanić’s park is located in the south-eastern part of the town between the river Korana and Zvijezda. It was established in
1886. by Josip Vrbanić, mayor of Karlovac.
Researching data about plant species growing in the Vrbanić’s
park and in cooperation with
Zelenilo d.o.o. we came to the understanding
that Ginkgo trees grow
there.
GOAL:
Supstantiate the evidence about Gingko tree growing in the park
Present the project in our school and our city
Suggest that Ginkgo becomes one of the tourist attraction of our town
WORK METHODS:
Students photographed
the trees and measured it’s
hight and diameter using
the Globe protocol.
Students made Ginkgo
tree using wire, starch
glue and newspapers.
Students made fan-shaped leaves,
wrote the information about the founding site,
growth, reproduction and health benefits in the leaves which they glued on the three afterwards.
INTERESTING FACTS:There is a difference
between male and female ginko tree
It can be recognized by fan-shaped leaves
Resistant to low temperatures
(-30° C)Tolerated polluted
atmosphereUsed as a culinary
suplementLeaves and seeds are used
in medicine to treat depression and asthma
Ginko has slightly changed in the last 200 million years
The first seeds brought to Europe were the ones brought to England
It is contemporary to dinosaurs
Used for it’s therapeutic benefits in China 2800 years BC
The 8th grade students found one male and one female
Ginkgo tree in the Vrbanić’s
park.
Project was presented to
other students and the
participants of the Day of the Open Events in
our school- primary school
Banija.
Students have presented their project to the City Council
CONCLUSION The old part of our town needs to be
revived therefore we hope the Ginko trees students found will be included as
one of the city’s attraction.
