The story begins during the hot summer of 1885…

Emile GIFFARD was at the time a dispensing pharmacist in the town of Angers in the Loire Valley, France . As Inventive, curious gourmet, Emile undertook research on the digestive and refreshing properties of the local mint. Through his studies he created a pure, clear and refined white mint liqueur which he served to the customers for the local Grand Hotel in order to offer them some relief from the heat and Giffard became an instant success. Emile later changed his pharmacy business into a working distillery and named his creation « Menthe Pastille » which referred to the popular mint candy of the time.Four generations later Giffard still remains under family control and maintains the original quality standards that Emile set all those years ago.

In the Beginning… a Pharmacist

In the beginning there are just fruits , plants and a pledge of qualityHand selected fruits and plants are bought from all over the region and only the finest grade are selected. For some fruits we may have to look further

afield to get the quality we demand.

Maceration is a traditional distilling method which respects the authentic taste of the fruit

To extract aromas fruits are placed into maceration with pure alcohol from 48 hours to 3 months according to the necessary time to obtain a perfect

balance between fruit and alcohol.

This delicately crafted infusion that respects the natural fruit is the basis for all our quality liqueurs.

The Distillery secrets : Recipes and know-howBlending and filtration, control and small batch quality testing have been

handed down generation to generation.

Research and Development : Our active laboratory is in operation all year long.
