Unfortunately, we were unable to do that this year but we still want to help you feel ready for

Summer preparation: Read! Any works of fiction that deal withwhat people think and what motivates them. Write your own poetry / draw your own pictures that express your feelings and beliefs. As lockdown eases, visit places of worship. Draw what is inside, perhaps take photos. Research the communities that use the building.

Basic Skills in Textiles: Samples of different hand stitches using a variety of different threads, creating original creative design ideas, experiment with different materials, creating pattern pieces and transferring designs from paper to fabric.

Autumn term topics: Storytelling: exploration of what drama is and narrative devices. Techniques learnt include mime, freeze frame, people as props, narration, flashback and thought tracking to bring to life a story student are familiar with and begin to look at basic characterisation. You will be encouraged to take analternative viewpoint and tell the story of what really happened that day. This unit gets you to work as part of a team, share ideas and use your imagination!

Homework: tasks take many forms from creative tasks, character development, line learning and recapping key vocabulary to reflecting on performances.

Why is drama important?It explores key parts of verbal and nonverbal communication and how this can be read or interpreted by others. It teaches you determination, patience, time management, self-discipline, teamwork, to be analytical and reflective. Improves confidence, ability to share your ideas/opinions, leadership, organisation and reasoning skills.

MusicTeachers: Ms Ernestine and Ms Fretwell

Autumn term topics:

Understanding pitch and rhythm - Basic keyboard skillsYou will have the opportunity to learn or develop your keyboard skills looking at a variety of music. From reading notation to playing as part of ensemble, you will develop your performance skills. You will explore how the keyboard works, the different functions and sounds it can make. You will learn to play the correct tempo of the music and in time with the baseline. You will also consider how to play chords and rehearse a piece of music for performance.

Homework: takes many different forms from creative tasks, researching key music styles/genres and artists. It might also include practising reading notation, listening tasks andrecapping key vocabulary. You will also be encouraged to practice at home and will have the opportunity to take part in extracurricular practice in school.

Why is music important?It is scientifically proven that learning an instrument improves your reading ability. Music is also closely linked to mathematics. A musician must be able to work as a team. Music is about expressing yourself and enjoying what you are doing.

Food TechnologyTeachers: Ms Celestine and Ms McDonnal

Autumn term topics: Lessons are split into two sections: theory (reading, writing, discussion and listening) and practical (cooking and handling equipment).

Theory: health and safety in the kitchen, equipment, food storing, The Eatwell Guide.

Practical: handling a sharp knife and washing-up equipment, couscous salad, biscuits, macaroni cheese, fajita, cup cakes. Homework: supports both the theory and practical through evaluating the dish.

Why is food technology important?Everyone has to eat in order to survive! Being able to cook for oneself empowers independence and allows you to know exactly what you are consuming (eating). It builds confidence and aids pride when you share your home cooked food and other people like it.

Understanding food and food groups also aids the understanding of what a healthy balanced diet is and looks like, therefore enabling you to maintain a healthy lifestyle, mind and body.

Careers: Chef, food developer, food scientist, dietician, food buyer, food manufacturer
