GET IN THE KNOW

Moving can be tough, but these help-ful tips can make the process just a little smoother.

1 Save Time for Fun. Research the area’s attractions and restaurants

before your first visit to house hunt. When you’re done with the “work,” then you can play. It’s a great way to lessen stress and to start getting to know your new city.

2 Kids First. Always load your moving truck with the kids’

bedroom items and toys packed in last. That way, they’re first off the truck, and you can set up their bedrooms and have access to their stuff while everything else is being unloaded. Older kids can get involved and start setting up their own rooms.

3 Just in case. Always have your prescriptions filled at your old

pharmacy before moving. In the event that there is a delay or mishap in transferring records, you’ll have at least a month’s supply while you get things straight.

4 Moving Day Must. Prepare a “moving emergency kit” for the trip

and the unloading. Include antibiotic cream, band-aids, aspirin, allergy medication, salt, pepper, plastic forks and knives, a roll of paper towels, a roll of toilet paper, magazines, coloring books and crayons, bottled water and a few snacks. These things will come in handy on the road and at your new place while you’re still unpacking.

The River Region’s mild climate means you can enjoy being outside eight to nine months a year. Entertaining in your backyard — whether it’s just you and your family, you invite the neighbors over or you host a big bash — is common in the area. To beautify your yard and get your outdoor space ready, take the sage advice of two River Region outdoor experts.

Give Your Landscape Some Love • Avoid Crepe Murder. Many people trip their crepe myrtle trees back to the trunk each year and miss their winter beauty. If you’re lucky enough to have some in your yard, treat them with respect. These fast-growing trees have a lovely, graceful shape and beautiful bark that can be accentuated landscape lighting. • Consider adding a Japanese maple. They add a beautiful focal point to any landscape and are hardy enough to do well in the local soil.• Add peat moss when planting new plants, trees or shrubs to help

them adapt to our heavy clay.• Plant perennials. They’ll save you time and money since, unlike annuals, they will die back in the winter months and return in the spring. Some local favorites are Cone Flower, Crocosmia and Salvia.• Water, Water! Alabama sun is almost tropical in the summer, so watering plants in containers and pots every day is a must. Max Koslofsky is a local arborist and a certified landscape profes-sional with over eight years’ experience. CALL THE GARDEN CENTER AT 334-271-8180 FOR MORE

INFORMATION.

Create an Inviting Outdoor Living Space • Include a grill or firepit.• Include comfy, weather-resistant furniture.• Use accessories to give your space some distinct personality. Things like candles, containers with plants, bright pillows and whimsical pieces of outdoor art can add just the right touches that make the space truly yours.• River Region summers can be hot! Remember to add some shade by creating a pergola or opt for an umbrella.Russell Brown is the general manager of Southern Homes & Gardens and Rosemont Gardens. FIND MORE INFORMATION AT
