Bridges Into Health dovetails the Bridges Out of Poverty concepts and tools with the growing body of health inequities research. Economic class affects all aspects of health and health care. To improve this, strategies must address economic class and other social determinants. The workshop includes a continuum of policy and practice critical to improving health among the disadvantaged. Research links overall health to economic stability, education, safe and affordable housing, nutrition/food security, and other factors. Meaningful learning tasks, direct teaching, videos, and large-group dialogue are integrated into this workshop. This workshop is facilitated by Terie Dreussi-Smith author of Bridges Out of Poverty: Strategies for Professionals and Communities. This workshop is open to community leaders from all sectors, human resource professionals, and clinical staff at all levels in the private, nonprofit, and public health sectors, and anyone interested in addressing health in our community. Meet Terie Dreussi-Smith Terie Dreussi-Smith, M.A. Ed., of Taylors, South Carolina, has served as supervisor of Prevention Services at a community alcohol/ other drug treatment and prevention organization for more than 9 years. She was instrumental in the organization’s redesign of programs and services for prevention and early intervention with clients from generational poverty. She also co-authored Bridges Out of Poverty: Strategies for Professionals and Communities.

Dreussi-Smith is a former public school teacher with years of experience. She served as adjunct faculty for several colleges, focusing on empowering adult students making the transition out of poverty. In her recent consulting work as a grant writer and social program manager for youth-based service agencies, community coalitions, and schools, Dreussi-Smith assisted communities in embedding Bridges Out of Poverty concepts in redesigned policies and services for families and young people in generational poverty. In addition to presenting nearly 100 Bridges Out of Poverty seminars annually and working with communities, Dreussi-Smith has many years of experience implementing the public health model to promote health and wellness initiatives in her role as an addictions prevention specialist, program manager, and community consultant. When and where is the workshop? The workshop is Friday, September 21, 2012, at Saint Francis Hospital in the Longinotti Auditorium, located at 5959 Park Ave., Memphis, TN 38119. It begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. You will be able to check-in at the auditorium, beginning at 8:30 a.m. What is the fee and what does it include? Will we get a break? The cost of the workshop is $50.00 and this includes the workshop, coffee, and lunch. We’ll take two short breaks and another break for lunch. How do I Register? Registration must be completed online, at www.healthymemphis.org. We do not plan to take money at the door. If you prefer to mail your payment, it can be sent to:

Where should I park? Parking is available behind the Longinotti Auditorium. What’s to eat? During the event you be served coffee, water, zero calorie soft drinks and a boxed lunch. If you have any dietary restrictions, please let us know after you register. Feel free to bring snacks or something you need for yourself throughout the day. What can I expect to learn? This workshop incorporates meaningful learning tasks, direct teaching, and large‐group dialogue and will:

• Highlight how social capital and social interactions can be redesigned to improve health outcomes

• Provide an overview of research that indicates "poverty is making us sick" • Introduce a dialogue on how Robert Sapolsky's "Theory of Social Coherence" is limiting

access to health care within our health care systems and community health initiatives • Illustrate tools to address health inequities
