There are many ways of introducing GIS into your teaching depending on the resources your school has

Doesn’t have electricity or computers: Use Maptrix kits for teaching reading of topographical maps

Has a computer lab for Geography use: Purchase a 30 user Geomatica lab licence. Geomatica can also be installed on the Geography teachers own computers to enable lesson preparation etc.

Data partners

A key element of our philosophy is on providing free-flowing ideas to educators that can be used in problem solving and decision making scenarios with the learners

The Aircraft Operating Company (AOC) provide us with high quality aerial photographs especially for local environment atlases in Gauteng.

As a result, one of the key components of our Geomatica product is the provision of up to date data for educators to use in their teaching.

The Chief Directorate of Surveys and Mapping provides us with digital versions of all the 1:50000 Toposheets in South Africa

As an investor in our company GeoTerraImage give us access to extensive digital data sets based on earth observation satellite data and aerial photography for use in the development of the Geomatica Product Suite

Collaborations

We believe that the success of our product is linked to forming lasting relationships with educators in all sectors of South African education: formal, informal and home schooling, both at grass roots level and management level.

Impak Onderwysdiens. Impak provide a comprehensive framework for parents who home school their children. Impak have decided to incorporate the Geomatica Titanium Atlas into their Geography syllabus from grade 4 to 12 for their registered learners.

Rhodes University Mathematics Education Project (RUMEP). We have an informal collaboration with RUMEP to guide the development of new Maths materials and resources. It is vital for us to consult people who have the right expertise to advise on these matters; RUMEP as an organisation is ideal for this, as they are involved in teacher development and upliftment

Databases: The underlying strength of any GIS is its database structure. It is in this area that much of the information of the GIS is located. Most GIS’s make use of relational databases, where information between tables is linked via a common field, rather than flat file databases, where all the information pertaining to a Layer would be contained in a single, sometimes cumbersome table.

A GIS database also includes data

about the spatial

locations and the shape of geographic

features recorded as points, lines, pixels, grid

cells or tins as well as their attributes

A quote from one of our usersA quote from one of our users

“Geomatica is the best teaching tool for Geography and allows a

much wider coverage of the subject framework. It has

functions that allow teaching concepts in Geography which

previously learners found difficult to grasp.”

Page 73: Geomatica™ Titanium (v2) Presentation Copyright 2010

GEOMATICA PHILOSOPHYNapierian GIS Technologies (Pty) Ltd is a high-tech company specialising in the development and marketing of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) products specifically aimed at the educational market. Napierian has been established as a private company based in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape, and is owned by its principal investors and operators. The establishment of Napierian is the culmination of several years of intense brainstorming and innovative product development.

South Africa’s shift to an Outcomes Based Education policy has resulted in much disorder in the provision of learning materials and particularly in the provision of project-based resources. There is a clearly defined need for tools to enable educators to develop project-based learning materials that support Outcomes Based Education. At the same time, there is a pressing need for additional exposure of educators and learners to key subjects such as mathematics, science and information technology.

Page 74: Geomatica™ Titanium (v2) Presentation Copyright 2010

Napierian has a working product in their Geomatica™ product suite. The product suite is developed using a GIS-based software package that allows educators and learners to work with local data and imagery to determine the solutions to specific task-oriented questions. It combines an easy-to-use, step-by-step interface coupled with a powerful GIS toolset that permits easy viewing and manipulation of the data and images. By basing Geomatica on GIS, we are harnessing the power of working with spatial data and in particular harnessing the power of GIS to develop spatial awareness and higher-level cognitive skills. Locally relevant data is also provided, with supplementary data content being made available via the Internet and in subsequent releases. Within this broader remit of developing spatial awareness and higher-level cognitive skills, particular attention has been given to enhancing mathematics and science concepts and skills, whilst providing a seamless link with technology so as to strengthen areas of weakness in the South African education system.

Our philosophy is based on four key principles: change and growth, forming relationships, providing locally relevant resources and development of critical skills in learners. We will continue to develop our product whilst being guided by these principles.

Page 75: Geomatica™ Titanium (v2) Presentation Copyright 2010

Our product is a growing entity. We believe that in an ever-changing world, teachers should have access to resources that themselves are growing to meet the needs of education and as a result the national and global economies. We deliver new modules, lesson resources and other services to the teachers based on their feedback. We are fully aware that educators have access to many datasets from local municipalities and the Internet. However, it takes time to locate these and to load them into a product so that they can interact with the data. Many educators simply do not have the time or the facilities to do this. Our service therefore is to find out from educators what their needs and requirements are and to collate this data for them in a ready to use educational format.

Closely linked with this idea of growth, is that of forming relationships. We believe that the success of our product is linked to forming lasting relationships with educators in all sectors of South African education: formal, informal and home schooling, both at grass roots level and management level. We do not simply sell our package and leave our customers to get on with it. Our web site allows users to participate in a Discussion Forum about their usage of the product and also to post innovative lessons that they have presented based on Geomatica. By forming long-term relationships with schools and other bodies we can also aid in technology skills transfer, particularly in light of the introduction of GIS into the Grade 10 to 12 curriculum in 2006.
