General Policy on Paper Writing by the Atmos Group  Draft for discussion (May 3, 2015) (Phil Rasch and Shaocheng Xie)

The following procedures are made to help remove confusion and provide guidance for Atmosphere Group on writing papers, trying to acknowledge contributions by individuals, task teams, and the larger activities conducted with the participation of multiple atmosphere task teams and/or other ACME groups.

1. In general, paper writing should start after date XXX. One candidate date is when ACME v1 is frozen (June 30, 2016).  We will talk about what situations might lead to exceptions.

2. Follow the ACME general collaboration or publication policies

3. Many atmosphere group epics (defined here as major activities taking months or more to complete) already include a subtask to deliver one or more paper(s) to demonstrate a new model capability or model analysis or tuning methodology.  These serve to document our work in the scientific community. Epics which do not include such a paper as a deliverable should consider adding one. Task leads should consult with the team leads on these papers.

4. Major ("capstone") simulations documenting a collection of model innovations also merit a paper or papers. Typically, these simulations would require a prior series of tunings to produce a useful model for a long simulation or involve a series of simulation variations on a single theme. Overview papers documenting the model configuration and characteristics should include a comprehensive author list of those that influenced the characteristics of the capstone simulations. Papers on specific subtopics using these simulations will generally contain a smaller list of authors.

5. A confluence page should be created for coordinating papers and data analyses. Please note that indicating your interest in writing a paper or performing an analysis does not mean you have the go ahead to do so. The Atmosphere Group leads will consult relevant task leads to make a decision on details involving who/when. The goal is to encourage people to write papers, and avoid conflict.

6. An overview paper (if appropriate) for capstone simulations should be done first before any of the subsequent analysis is submitted.

7. Recognize those who contribute significantly to model runs either by running the model, doing analysis or providing scientific guidance or technical support as co-authors in the overview papers even though they may not make significant contributions to the paper writing. For other relevant papers, it would be nice to ask them if they can/want to contribute in light of all the effort they put in.

8. Authorship for collaborators should follow the ACME general collaboration or publication policies.

9. A task team always has a higher priority to lead papers on topics that are closely related to their task goals with data from runs primarily conducted by the task team.
