St. Paul. April 2S. 1929.
Mr. L. W. Hill,
Chairman of the Board.
Dear Sir:
I return correspondence enclosed with your letter of April 25th about taxes on Glacier park property. Mr. Nichols is correct in his statement about the difference between Glacier park and Yellowstone park. When Montana ceded Glacier Park to the United States, she reserved the power of taxing property in the Park. and this exception was recognized by the United States. However, I hav some question whether this reservation is constitutional: I have had this question under investigation for some little time and hope to reach a conclusion shortly. Only about. $7000 of our yearly taxes are assessed against hotels and chalets that are actually located within the park boundary, the balance being upon the buildings at the main entrance and at Belton.
The Belton buildings are located upon property which was patented to us under a Special Act of Congress and they are. therefore, ~ot located upon the National Forest Reserve. I do not think that there is any way to esoape taxes on thes~ buildings.
