Introduction to the IFMSA Research Exchange Program

The International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) is the world’s oldest and larg-

est independent organization representing associations of medical students internationally. It currently

maintains 116 National Member Organizations from more than 100 countries across six continents with

over 1.5 million students represented worldwide. IFMSA is recognized as a non-governmental organization

within the United Nations’ system and the World Health Organization and as well, it works with the World

Medical Association.

IFMSA unites medical students worldwide to lead initiatives that impact positively the communities we

serve. IFMSA represents the opinions and ideas of future health professional in the fields of global health,

and works in collaboration with external partners. IFMSA builds capacity through training, project and ex-

change opportunities, while embracing cultural diversity so as to shape a sustainable and healthy future.

The Standing Committee on Research Exchange (SCORE) is one of the six Standing Committees of

the International Federation of Medical Students Association (IFMSA), founded in 1991. SCORE mission

is:

“to offer future physicians an opportunity to experience research and diversity in countries all over the

world. This is achieved by providing a network of locally and internationally active students that globally

facilitate access to research exchange projects. Through our programming and opportunities, we aim to

develop both culturally sensitive students and skilled researchers intent on shaping the world of science in

the upcoming future”.

The IFMSA Research Exchange program is design to deepen medical student knowledge in the various

fields of medical and clinical research. The possibility of partaking in research abroad is intended to broad-

en medical students’ body of knowledge, and introduce them to different approaches in clinical investiga-

tion, medical education, healthcare and ethical research standards. The maintenance of affordable ex-

change tuition insures that students from across the world can participate without incurring a financial bur-

den.

Finally, SCORE continually strives to facilitate collaboration and partnerships between different medical

universities, research institutions and allied health students. In accord with the IFMSA Constitution and

Bylaws, SCORE will under no circumstances discriminate on the bases of nationality, religion, race, sex

and social or political affiliation.

Presently, SCORE offers more than 2800 research projects in more than 65 countries, providing more

than 2500 medical students worldwide the opportunity to participate in the IFMSA Research Exchange

program.

Letter to the Tutor

Dear _______________________________,

First of all, we would like to thank you for considering collaborating with the International Federation of

Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA), represented by

_________________________________________________________________(NMO name), to provide

medical students from across the world with this unmatched opportunity to expand and strengthen their

research-based skills in medicine and deepen their knowledge on specific medical topics.

In order to ensure the Academic Quality of this IFMSA Research Exchange Program and to make sure

that the student is actively involved in his assigned research project under your supervision, this Logbook

is created to help evaluate the student’s overall performances, as well as regular learning progress

throughout his/her exchange period, based on the projects’ requirements as well as your recommenda-

tions.

Therefore, we kindly ask you to:

- Meet with the student at the beginning on the first day of the exchange period, to discuss and set

the requirements and goals of the research project and his/her expected involvement in it;

- Supervise the student throughout his/her working days and guide him fill in the daily “Regular As-

sessment” section, while providing him with your signature as a proof of his attendance;

- Meet with the student both at the middle and at the end of the exchange period (every 2 weeks),

to assess and fill in the “Elective Appraisal” section and giving feedback to the student;

- Evaluate the overall performance of the student’s performances at the end of the exchange period

while filling in the “General Evaluation” section and giving feed back to the student;

- Signing the Logbook, as well as the Exchange Certificate, attesting that the student has met the

needed Academic expectations in this research exchange.

Once again, we would like to thank you for your time and interest in our organization; your collaboration is

crucial for our program functioning as without your kind efforts, this exchange would not be possible.

If you would like to have any further information, please feel free to contact the Local Officer on Research

Exchange (LORE).

Best regards,

Dear Exchange Student, Welcome to the IFMSA Research Exchange program and congratulations for taking part in the world’s

largest medical student-run exchange program.

Thanks to the work done by your colleagues, who have put in their time and effort to help you have a

memorable exchange opportunity, you will not only experience great hospitality and meet new friends from

around the world, but also discover a new healthcare system and get exposed to its ongoing research ac-

tivities. Thus, we would like to draw your attention to the academic aspect of this exchange, via the follow-

ing document and urge you to use it accordingly.

This Logbook is created to ensure the Academic Quality of the IFMSA Research Exchange Program,

both for you to have the best educational experience possible, under the supervision of your Tutor, and for

us to have a closer look at the efficiency of our program. Indeed, this Logbook will help evaluate your over-

all performance, as well as regular learning progress throughout the exchange period based on your as-

signed project’s requirements, as well as your own expectations.
