A sister ship to MIPEC’s original hammer class tug Hammerhead, the Sledgehammer will initially undergo routine testing and inspection at a commissioning berth before serving as a construction support vessel on Gladstone Harbour, where its main job will be manoeuvring barges around the harbour. This second tug will transport resources between the mainland, Wiggins Island and Curtis Island.

Construction of the Sledgehammer was a significant investment for MIPEC in both time and capital. Taking six months to draft and nine months to manufacture and costing a total of $4million, many were of the opinion that it is too costly to build these tugs locally. However MIPEC feel that lesser-quality vessels that can be imported from Asia do not compare to the superior quality and longer life expectancy of tugs that are fabricated locally.

GEA was fortunate enough to have MIPEC host a Member to Member function last August, where GEA members had the opportunity to view the tug in the making.

GEA General Manager Carli Hobbs said it was extremely satisfying to see the MIPEC team so excited and proud of their work during the launch of the new tug.

“It is exciting to see the final product, which was designed and manufactured by a GEA member, right here in Gladstone. When up close to this world-class vessel, you can see the consistency, clean finishing touches and capability of the team who have project managed the new hammer class tug,” Ms Hobbs said.

The new tug is currently awaiting engine commissioning and stability testing before embarking on its first job.

This year 15 February marked a significant date in the ITT Blakers Safety Calender, as on this day, ITT Blakers celebrated 365 days LTI Free.

Julia Morris – Keynote Day 1With over twenty years experience performing to crowds all over the world, Lady Julia Morris is one of Australia’s most successful and polished comedy exports and has shared the stage with comedy royalty including Richard Pryor, Jason Alexander, Whoopi Goldberg, Jerry Lewis and Robin Williams.

Julia has been a regular face on Australian television since her debut on New Faces in 1985 and by 1995 she was a household name, hosting or starring in popular shows including Full Frontal, In Melbourne Tonight and Beauty and the Beast.

Living in the UK in the early naughties, Julia hosted TV shows for the BBC, worked with everyone from Stephen Fry to Dame Edna, appeared in nearly every major international comedy festival from Montreal to South Africa, won the prestigious Herald Angel award at the Edinburgh Festival 2002 and was named Time Out London’s ‘Comedy Performer of the Year’ in 2004. Julia also starred in the successful Edinburgh production of ‘Hunting Diana’ and wrote and performed three different one woman shows on London’s prestigious West End.

Julia gave birth to her first daughter Ruby in December 2006 and subsequently returned to Australia with her new family, where she co-hosted the Astra-Award winning Singing Office and, together with opera star David Hobson, won Channel 7’s popular celebrity singing show It Takes Two.

In November 2008 Julia delivered her second daughter, Sophie, and used the final months of her second pregnancy to pen the memoirs of her time abroad, entitled “Don’t You Know Who I Used To Be?”, which were released to popular acclaim in April 2009. Julia’s 2008 and 2009 stand-up tours were both nominated for the Helpmann Award (Australia’s version of the Tony or Olivier theatre awards) and she won ‘Best Australian Act’ at the Time Out Sydney 2009 Comedy Awards. Julia also appeared at the Just For Laughs Festival in 2009, including being specially selected to perform at Whoopi Goldberg’s Gala – the night was a triumph and meetings with several American TV networks followed.

During most of 2010 and 2011 Julia was based in Los Angeles, where she attended acting school, captured the hearts and imaginations of many of LA’s top industry execs, and hosted several high profile events back in Australia including the prestigious 2011 Midwinter Ball in Australia’s Parliament House.

In late 2011 Julia returned home to become Australia’s very first ‘Celebrity Apprentice’, raising over $200,000 for breast cancer research along the way. In May 2012 Julia started recording her first major acting role as Gemma in Nine Network and Playmaker Media’s House Husbands – which has since established itself as Australia’s most popular new drama and has been recommissioned for a second series in 2013.

The Calliope Junior Soccer Club has teams for all age groups from under 5s to under 12s and senior teams for both men and ladies. The Gladstone Engineering Alliance (GEA) is requesting submissions from charitable organisations/clubs in the Gladstone Region to be the beneficiary of GEA’s annual Charity Golf Day, to be held on Friday 19 July 2013.

The GEA Charity Golf Day was established in 2011, donating over $18,000 in the past two years to two worthy charities - the Salvation Army and Friends of RSPCA Gladstone.

GEA is proud to assist charities in the Gladstone region by raising funds to improve facilities, helping grow organisations or help towards implementing projects. The Golf Day also offers GEA members an opportunity to give back to the local community.

Held at the Gladstone Golf Course, the day offers local businesses the opportunity to showcase and promote their services to other corporate players and align themselves with a worthy cause, all while partaking in an enjoyable day on the golf course. In teams of 3 (Ambrose), players circulate the course, taking part in on-course activities and are supplied with food and refreshments throughout the event.

The GEA Charity Golf Day includes a morning of networking at the Gladstone club house, 18 hole golf tournament, lunch and culminates with prizes and an official presentation.

Selection Criteria

GEA will evaluate submissions against the following criteria:

• The charitable organisation/club must exist in the Gladstone Region

• There must be a clear link between the charitable organisation/club and local industry

• Please provide a description of your organisation and its operations.

• Please describe the projects/activities for which you are seeking funds; and how you would utilise the funding should you be appointed as the 2013 beneficiary.

• Please describe how you would have a presence on the day to support the event and raise further funds for your organisation.

• Please outline any ways in which you are able to promote/give exposure to GEA should you be appointed as the 2013 beneficiary.

• The GEA will also take into account any previous and/or current funding received by the charitable organisation/club

Karina has worked in the media industry for 10 years in many different roles and outlets. (with a few years of uni in amongst that Bachelor of Business & Bachelor of Communications, Marketing)

Karina’s first media role was at Dolly Magazine, then to Sydney Morning Herald, Southern Cross 10 and the biggest radio group in the country, Austereo. Karina moved to Gladstone to write, produce and host the Karina

and Mak Breakfast show on Hot FM CQ.

With years of content driven media experience and having held the role of marketing integration guru for media outlets themselves, this prepared Karina with the skills to best use marketing and media to raise profiles and create strong brand awareness for her clients.

Shana has worked in the finance industry for 10 years, in a variety of roles in both retail and commercial banking sectors of Westpac. Over this time, Shana has gained experience in sales, customer service, financial analysis and working with business partners to meet similar goals.

Shana cites being able to build strong relationships with her customers and add value to their business and financial position as the most rewarding part of her current role in Relationship Banking.

She is passionate about customer service and believes that without the right attitude, you will never achieve what you set out to do.

As the Assistant to the Relationship Director for Wide Bay, Shana is responsible for the day-to-day management of a portfolio of clients including local and regional business customers from medium-sized commercial to institutional. Shana is also accountable for completing credit submissions, complex financial analysis, and proactively reviewing her clients’ needs for opportunities to add value and streamline their banking. Working together with her team, a big part of Shana’s job is to support the local community through her role with Westpac, which involves sponsoring and fundraising for local businesses and charities, and being involved in Gladstone’s local events.

Shana has a keen interest in workplace health and safety, and is currently completing her diploma in this field. Her goal is to eventually work in the health and safety industry and use her knowledge to help make workplaces as safe as can be- there is nothing more important than going home safe to family at the end of the day.

Howard quit university after two years to work as an Operator with Dow Chemicals and subsequently BASF. He returned to University to complete the degree when he was satisfied he understood the practicalities of a chemical process. Howard joined Exxon Chemical Olefins Inc in 1989. His practical experience in process operations lead to a rapid specialisation in process optimisation, taking his first ethylene plant from 1800 t/d to 2100 t/d without physical modification. These results lead to a rapid progression within Exxon, eventually coupling reliability science with process modelling analysis to extend optimisation from the process, to a combination with maintenance, improving not only efficiency but also availability. ExxonMobil still follow these practices worldwide to this day. Howard is by nature

entrepreneurial and after leaving Exxon he learnt the ropes of consultancy before establishing his own businesses. Ultimately AMEC acquired PI in January 2009. Howard expanded the PI team into Australia within Clough AMEC, and now helps lead Clough AMEC as part of the executive team. His considerable skills bring a unique dimension to an asset support business.

A ban on shale oil mining in Queensland will be liftedNatural Resources Minister Andrew Cripps will today announce plans to lift the ban, placing the Newman Government on a collision course with environmentalists.

The decision will mean the Government can count on new royalty revenue from shale oil, liquefied natural gas and uranium in the future.

The shale oil industry has been in limbo since 2008 after a 20-year moratorium was placed over a major deposit in north Queensland and the industry told it must prove its technology before the Government would give the green light to proceed.

Shale oil is a sedimentary rock that can be mined, crushed, heated and processed or heated in place to produce petroleum and other fuels.

The Newman Government’s decision will allow one operator, Queensland Energy Resources, to progress its trial plant at Gladstone and seek approval for a full commercial operation.

Other potential operators are likely to kickstart the approvals process for their own operations in coming years, with 90 per cent of Australia’s known oil shale reserves in Queensland.

However, the Government will maintain until 2028 the moratorium on the controversial deposit near Proserpine in north Queensland, which critics claim is too close to the coastline and sensitive wetlands.

Mr Cripps said the industry could provide huge economic benefits to Queensland, with the current resource considered capable of producing 22 billion barrels of oil.

“As the world supply of conventional crude oil diminishes, there are strong prospects for oil shale to become the next major source of liquid fuel supplies in Australia, and Queensland is well placed to lead that charge,” he said.

Under the new shale oil policy, the Newman Government promised project proponents would have to demonstrate how they would meet high environmental standards.

Environment Minister Andrew Powell stressed approvals would be made on a “case-by-case” basis.

QER chief executive Pearce Bowman said the Government’s decision recognised the potential importance of oil shale to

Australia’s transport fuel future, and QER’s achievements in constructing and operating a clean and quiet technology demonstration plant.

Coal stays put as rail on mendThe coal from mines in Baralaba and Moura won’t be going anywhere for at least another week as the rail line to the Gladstone port remains closed.

Rail company Aurizon has crews working to fix the damaged caused by ex Tropical Cyclone Oswald and expects the line to reopen by Wednesday 20 February 2013.

“Pending no issues emerging with the recovery effort, we are working towards re-opening the Moura system progressively west from Boundary Hill, with the last section impacting mines at Baralaba and Moura to open by 19 February,” a spokesperson from Aurizon stated.

The Moura network suffered extensive damage due to flooding, including the full replacement of three kilometres of track and earthworks.

Meanwhile, an Aurizon coal train derailed on Friday 8 February, causing significant damage to the line at Ambrose, north of Gladstone.

A number of coal trains between Ambrose and Rockhampton had been at a standstill, although the company said some services were back up and running and were expected to be fully restored by 14 February.

Aurizon reopened its Blackwater rail system on the Central Queensland Coal Network to diesel coal trains two weeks ago, following the repair of lines damaged by ex Tropical Cyclone Oswald.

Electric coal train services have also begun to come back online.

The Goonyella and Newlands networks continue to operate as normal.

Are your staff fit for work?Gladstone-based Registered Training Organisation (RTO), Down to Earth Results, has released its training calendar for 2013 to help organisations in the mining, construction, oil and gas industries ensure their staff are fit for work.

‘We understand that organisations need a reliable, nationally-accredited training

partner who can motivate employees to improve safety, productivity and efficiency in the workplace,’ said Kerryanne Tawhai, Director of Down to Earth Results. ‘Our courses are specifically designed to get the most of each individual participant and achieve your corporate goals.’

New courses:25 February to 1 March: Health Safety Representative (HSR)

This mandatory training for elected HSRs provides the skills and knowledge required to carry out duties as required by the WHS Act 2011 and the WHS Regulations 2011.

6-8 March: Rehab & Return to Work Coordinator

This course offers participants the necessary tools to develop, implement and monitor return to work programs.

14 March: Work Safely at Heights

We help participants control and monitor the work environment when in an elevated position by providing knowledge and skills in the areas of hazard identification and risk assessment.

15 March: Enter Confined Space

This course provides participants with the skills to work safely in confined spaces by learning to monitor and control hazards and risk in the work environment.
