GEA’s 2013 event calendar kicked off last month with an insightful and entertaining presentation by Oil & Gas expert Howard Thomas at our sold-out February Industry Update Luncheon.

This month shows no signs of slowing down with the roll-out of Stage 3 of the GEA Tender Readiness Program. The workshops will be held over March and April, focusing on tender writing for teams, the elements of a STAR tender, choosing a strategic approach, ensuring the culture of your workplace shines and much more.

A second workshop in April entitled Marketing for Tendering and Business will cover capability statement creation, tender design, developing tender templates and persuasive communication techniques. A final workshop in April will examine the contractual fundamentals to achieve on-time payments and avoid disputes.

Preparations are well underway for the GEA Inspiring Women in Industry Conference. The conference program is bursting with presentations spanning a range of topics and interactive workshops including career development, taking control

of your attention, adapting skills to needs and releasing your inner entrepreneur to turn $1 to $1 million, to name just a few. Speakers include a number of professionals from industry, media, science, business services and government, with keynote presentations from celebrated comedian and actress Julia Morris and Napoleon Perdis Cosmetics Managing Director, Emanuel Perdis.

While I know some women will say they are too busy to attend, my answer to them is that you are a woman – multi-tasking and organising is what we do best! So make the time to come and be inspired, challenged, develop your skills and network. Remember, the conference is not only for women in the region, but also for those who employ women in the workplace or perhaps lead teams of women.

For any members who may be considering implementing ISO9001 into their workplace, the GEA is currently designing a project to help build business capabilities. The pilot program will assist in building SME’s systems and processes, resulting in improving business systems, policies and capabilities within GEA’s membership base initially in the Gladstone area. The project will benefit the local business community as well as major industry by fostering improved supplier capabilities, improving efficiency, and strongly promoting participating members’ development in systems and processes to major industry.

The program will provide guidance to GEA members to identify, research, and implement world class practices, methods, and procedures, which will result in building the capabilities and capacity of their business. The objective is to empower members to operate in accordance with quality management system standard ISO9001, resulting in recognition of ‘World’s Best Practice’. Message from the GM

Global Manufacturing Group is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for employees and others in the workplace. Global Manufacturing Group’s Management System enlists the co-operation of all managers, employees, contractors, suppliers and visitors to achieve this goal.

Through our inspection, review and consultation process, we endeavour to identify hazards, assess risks, implement controls and monitor and review the effectiveness of those controls.

All employees have an obligation to report hazards and hazardous activities and any hazard identified should be recorded using the applicable documentation.

To begin identifying hazards, a person should simply ask the question “Does this task / activity / situation / event have the potential to harm a person?” Another way is to ask the question “What if?”

Risks are measured according to the likelihood and severity of injury. A risk assessment should be conducted for all hazards identified in the workplace. Risks must be assessed and prioritised using processes equivalent to those set out in relevant advisory standards under relevant legislation.

To assess the potential risks associated with a hazard, the likelihood of an event happening and the severity of the potential consequences of the event must be estimated. There are a number of factors that influence likelihood, which are as follows:

• How often the task occurs;

• How many people are exposed;

• The duration of exposure;

• Quantities and materials or multiple exposure points involved;

• The position of the hazard relative to employees and to other hazards;

• The skills and competence of persons exposed;

• The experience of persons exposed;

• Any special characteristics of the people involved;

• Distractions;

• Environmental conditions;

• Repetition;

• Condition of equipment;

• The effectiveness of existing control measures.

Safety is the responsibility of everyone. No job is so important that we cannot take time to perform our work safely.

GEA member and Gladstone small business EZI Communications took on the best of the best at the recent Motorola Solutions Australasian Awards night earlier this year and has come up trumps.

EZI Communications won the prestigious award for 2012 Australasian Accessories Partner of the Year, beating competition from Motorola Solutions Partners from Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Island Region.

The awards were presented as part of the Motorola Solutions 2013 Executive Partner Forum, which brought business leaders from the company’s channel community together for networking opportunities and to discuss business strategy for the year ahead.

EZI Communications is one of the largest suppliers of two way radio, phone systems and wireless solutions to enterprise customers in Queensland and is wholly owned and operated by Gladstone locals Vern and Carol Elms.

Company Owner and Managing Director Vern Elms said that the award was an immense recognition of the work performed by the EZI Communications team.

“We were very surprised to win the award, especially given the high calibre of competition from other dealers in Australia and across the South Pacific,” Mr Elms said.

“The award is testament to the hard work and dedication put in by our team. 2012 was a great year for EZI Communications and 2013 is already shaping up to be a huge year that will see the business continue to grow.”

The Calliope Crossroads is located approximately 2 kilometres east of Calliope in Central Queensland. The intersection links the Bruce Highway, port and industrial facilities in Gladstone, established agricultural areas of the Callide and Dawson Valleys and the developing Bowen Basin and Surat Basin coalfields. More than 8000 vehicles pass through the intersection each day.

In June 2010 the Department of Transport and Main Roads sought community feedback on a number of Calliope Crossroads intersection upgrade proposals. Following a review of community feedback, a design for the upgrade has been developed which meets the current and projected needs of the region.

The Australian Government has committed $150 million through the Nation Building Program to upgrade the intersection.

In July 2012, Golding Contractors was announced as the successful construction contractor to join the department in delivering the Calliope Crossroads project. Construction began in August 2012 and will take up to two years to complete.

With the recent regional flooding, the project has experienced up to 8 weeks of delays. At this time, the project is expected to be open to traffic in mid-late 2014.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads will continue to work with the contractor to provide advice to motorists and the community ahead of traffic changes or project milestones.

Calliope Crossroads Intersection Upgrade

Project Update

COMMUNITY sessions will be held throughout the Bowen Basin this month for the public to comment on Arrow Energy’s planned coal seam gas expansion in the region.

Its Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) has been released and was publicly available from March 11 2013.

Arrow is planning the staged development of CSG wells in a development area in Central Queensland from about 30 kilometres north of Glenden to 10 kilometres south of Blackwater.

The Bowen Gas Project is one of two upstream CSG developments, which form part of the Arrow liquefied natural gas (LNG) project to convert CSG to LNG for export.

Arrow Energy Chief Executive Andrew Faulkner said the EIS detailed the scope, potential impacts and mitigations as well as the benefits and opportunities from the Bowen Gas Project.

“Arrow’s Bowen Gas Project will have a lifespan of about 40 years which will help meet the growing demand for cleaner fuels,” Mr Faulkner said.

“It will also complement Arrow’s existing Moranbah Gas Project, a joint venture with AGL, which continues to supply both the Moranbah and Townsville power stations and mineral refining facilities in north Queensland.”

The EIS can be viewed at regional libraries and copies will be available on the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection’s website (www.ehp.qld.gov.au) and Arrow Energy’s website (www.arrowenergy.com.au) or by contacting Arrow Energy on the project freecall number 1800 038 856 or bowengas@arrowenergy.com.au to request a DVD copy. Written submissions on the EIS are invited from any person during the submission period, which started on 11 March 2013 and ends on 23 April 2013.

Helen SimpsonSenior Community Relations Adviser Santos GLNG

Helen has been working in the Community Relations sector for nearly 10 years. She first came to Gladstone in 1980 where she ran the family earthmoving business for almost 10 years before deciding to open her own fashion boutique in late 1989. After selling both businesses Helen worked in retail until she decided on a career change. In 2003 an opportunity arose with the Gladstone Observer Newspaper Company when she took up the role of Sales and Marketing Manager and later on the Client Business Manager

in the advertising deptartment. Having strong customer service skills and a good understanding of small business, she continued to build on her solid relationships with the Gladstone business community and successfully coordinated a number of marketing campaigns to promote the Gladstone Observer Newspaper Company.

She took the chance to get involved in the resource industry in early 2007 and worked in a range of project roles before joining the Santos GLNG team as the Senior Community Relations Adviser in April 2010. She describes her current role as being the conduit of information between the Gladstone community and the Santos GLNG project. She has a strong passion for Gladstone and its people. Being a long term resident, she has a good understanding of the community’s needs and its people. Working together with the GLNG Community Relations team, a big part of Helen’s role is supporting the local community through community events, sponsorships and charities as well as delivering Santos GLNG’s community investment program. Being involved face to face with the community and knowing that Santos GLNG is contributing positively to the Gladstone community gives her great satisfaction.

Claire WangPayroll & Finance Officer Prime Equipment Sales/Rentals Pty Ltd

Claire has recently moved to Gladstone to start her career as a Payroll & Finance Officer at Prime Rentals’ head office.

In her early twenties, Claire left university in China to travel almost 13,000 kilometres to study for a bachelor degree in Hotel Management at Griffith University’s Gold Coast campus. Although Claire could hardly speak English when she first embarked on her Australian journey, through undertaking work experience in the hospitality industry her English quickly improved, which in turn helped her

with her university studies.

After several years of study, Claire eventually discovered her dream was to become an accountant. She completed an accounting internship with Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, which enabled her to experience various fields such as accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll. While completing her internship, Claire also completed her Masters degree in Accounting and was very proud to become an Australian Citizen in June last year.

Claire believes that working for Prime Rentals in Gladstone has provided her with an excellent opportunity to enhance her career and become part of the Prime culture, as well as live in one the most dynamic locations in Australia. Claire’s responsibilities include payroll, accounts receivable and bookkeeping, and administration duties. Down the track, she will also assist Prime’s Corporate Manager with management accounting and financial analysis. Claire is keen to complete a CPA Australia qualification and bring the latest accounting knowledge to Prime Rentals.

QGC Opens New Gladstone Offfice and Public Information CentreQGC’s new office and public information centre is now open at 72 Goondoon Street. The space is a base for QGC staff and includes a meeting room and a visual information display of the Queensland Curtis LNG (QCLNG) project. The centre officially opened on Monday 18 February and is open to the public from Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:30am and 4:30pm. So drop by and don’t forget to check out that carpet!
