Introduction

It is getting close to the exams and hopefully you have started to plan your revision. If not don’t worry – this guide will help you to get going.

It is filled with some top tips about revision and during the exams and key information about each of your subjects.

Just remember – if there is something you are unsure about – ask your class teacher!

Revision tips

It’s not all work, work, work – of course, you can enjoy life and revise at the same time. Revision does need determination and planning, though. You need to keep refreshing your memory of what you’ve learned. If you spread the workload over a period of time you:

are likely to achieve more. will be under a lot less pressure and can enjoy your work. are less likely to experience stress and strain. will have more time to relax, keep fit and enjoy life.

Hints for effective revision Make a list of all topics to revise Highlight any parts of your work you’re not sure of and give them more time. Ensure that there’s enough time to go through each topic several times. Make sure that you cover every topic at least once. Leave some time to cover the most difficult topics again Cover several subjects during revision sessions Divide each topic into smaller parts.

Planning your work Planning your work means that you are more likely to revise all your work properly. Another bonus is that good planning always reduces stress. Try to:

1. Make a list of what you have to do 2. Make an exam timetable 3. Plan / design / draw up a timetable Think about the best way to divide your

evening time

Preparing your revision plan Your revision plan will help you to know what

you want to do and when you want to do it.  Use the example on the next page to help you – Ask your tutor for extra copies if necessary. Use a new one for each week between

now and the first exam. Divide each day into session with a break of 5 minutes

between some and 10 between others. Don’t forget to mark in time for meals and be realistic about how long you can keep going – eight hours a day, even if you are behind with your work, is really over the top!

Set some time aside each day for relaxation – perhaps an hour each evening during the week and a little more time in the afternoons on Saturday and Sunday. Plan some treats for these times.

FILL IN ALL YOUR COMMITMENTS, INCLUDING: • lessons • school activities – matches, rehearsals, clubs etc • other activities – part-time jobs etc • times for relaxation and enjoyment If time is short you may need to decide on which activities to drop for a

while: remember, it will only be for a few weeks.

The Exam Let yourself ease off a bit in the week before the first exam. If you work right up to the last minute all of the topics will be churning about in your mind, so take time out before each exam. As a result you will be fresh and those topics you thought you could not remember will come flooding back.

During the week before the examinations: o make sure that you get plenty of exercise and sleep o use some of the time to refresh your memory on a few

of the difficult or essential points o catch up if you have fallen behind – but don’t overdo

it.

The night before the first exam Now is the time to pamper yourself. Do something you really enjoy doing, totally relax. make sure that you have all your examination

equipment ready – pen (and at least one spare), pencil, pencil sharpener, rubber, ruler and other items which you may be allowed to take in to the exam, such as a calculator.

make sure that you have a centre number and a candidate number. check your exam timetable – which room is the exam in? What time do you

have to be there? have a warm bath and, afterwards, try some relaxation exercises

try to get an early night

In the exam room Don’t panic if you are a bit nervous – everybody will be. DO fill in the relevant sections on the front of your exam script, including your centre number and candidate number in the boxes provided for them. DO read your exam paper carefully. Make sure that you read the instructions

DO work out how much time you have for each question. DO make sure that you have at least five minutes at the end of the exam to go over what you have done. DON’T panic if your mind appears to go

blank. Once you start answering questions your memory will start to work again – look at key words in the question, this will help. DO underline or circle important words, in the questions. DON’T forget to include all your workings – you could get plenty of marks for them. DON’T waste time thinking and worrying about losing an odd mark in part of a question you don’t know the answer to. Leave it. Come back to it later, if you have time.

DON’T let your handwriting let you down – if they can’t read it, examiners 

can’t give you marks. DO ask for a bilingual dictionary if you are allowed one – this can really help with words you don’t understand. DO - If you don’t understand all of the words in a question – break it down. Underline or circle words you don’t understand and use your dictionary to help or use the words you do understand to try to work it out. DO plan long answer questions – remember the advice given by your teachers in how to structure these. DO learn the common question terms and what they mean for each subject e.g discuss / explain / identify. These are on the subject pages.

What type of questions can I be asked in my GCSE Science exams?

Type of question

Top tips for answering the question

Passage 1. Spend a minute reading all of the information you are given. 2. Read the question and underline parts of the passage that are

relevant. 3. Use the information from the passage in your answer.

Calculation 1. Look at the values you are given and select the equation that you need to use (on the inside page of exam paper).

2. Re-arrange equation if needed and substitute in values. 3. Show all working out.

Data 1. Spend a minute looking at the data you are given. Read all of the information before looking at the question.

2. Underline key words in the question. 3. Use data from the table / graph to support your answer.

Writing balanced symbol equations

1. Write down the symbols for the reactants and products. 2. Write down the number of each element you have on the reactants

side, and the products side. 3. Add numbers in front of the reactants and / or products until you

have the same number on both sides of the equation. 6 mark questions 1. Read the question and underline the key words.

2. Write a list of the key words that you need to put in your answer. 3. Ensure you are giving 6 points (1 mark per point) and they are in a

logical order.

GCSE Exam terminology – what do the words in the question mean? 

Command word What does the word mean? Outline Give only the key facts of the topic. You may

need to set out steps in a process. Put them in order.

Describe Write a detailed answer that covers what happens, how it happens and when. Talk about facts and characteristics.

Explain Write a detailed answer that covers how and why a thing happens. Talk about mechanisms and reasons.

Suggest Think about what you have learnt and apply it to a new situation. You may not know the answer but suggest something sensible.

Evaluate You will be given some facts, data or other information. Write about them and provide tour own conclusion.

Estimate Suggest a “rough” value without completing a calculation or measurement. Suggest a realistic value.

Discuss Write about the issues relating to a topic. You may need to talk about opposing sides of a debate.

Justify Give some evidence or write an explanation to tell the examiner why you gave an answer.

Predict Look at some data and suggest a realistic value. Don’t guess – look at trends in the data and use your knowledge.

Calculate Work out a number. Use your calculator. You may need to use an equation given to you. Show your working out.

Applied Business  GCSE  1 exam – Business in Action – 1 hr 30 mins – worth 40% of GCSE A mixture of short and long answer questions. Short first then building difficultly.             

Types of Ownership

Students are required to understand the different forms of ownership i.e. Sole Trader, Partnership, Public and Private Limited Companies and Charities. Students will be asked to know and explain the different types in relation to a business provided in the exam (2 marks/ 4 marks) Students will also be required to state the advantages and disadvantages of the ownership and justify which one is most appropriate for the business given (10 marks)

Business Activity

Students will be required to state why businesses start and identify the types of activities businesses will be involved in (Primary, Secondary and Tertiary) 2 marks. Students need to explain possible changes to the external environment 4 marks and must evaluate the consequences of changes in the external environment on a particular business providing suitable conclusions as to which ones are most important, 10 marks.

Business Organisation

Students need to explain about functional areas and understand the operational tasks that are connect to the area (4 marks). Students need to evaluate the consequences if a functional area do not work together effectively and must come to a conclusion in relation to the case study or of a business of their choice (10 marks).

Mission statements

Students need to identify aims and objectives (2 marks) Students will be required to explain the importance of aims and objectives for a business they have studied or apply it to the business (4 marks)

Stakeholders and their differing interests

Students will be required to give examples of stakeholder groups and explain their interests for the business they have studied (2- 4 marks) Students will also be asked to discuss a conflict that may occur between two stakeholder groups for a business of their choice (4 marks each) To gain higher marks students will be asked to evaluate the consequences of not listening to stakeholder groups (10 marks)

Students need to state/identify how employers could work with employees in enterprising ways (2 marks) Evaluate how a good working relationship has been developed between employees and the employer of a business studied or the case study provided (10 marks)

Changing use of ICT

Students are required to explain the different types of ICT and the purpose of ICT in a business (4 marks) Students will need to evaluate the case study for an upgrade in ICT provision (10 marks)

 

Uncertainty- risk, reward and change

Students need to give examples of reward, risk and change in an organisation (2 marks) and explain how a business has changed its existing business practices (4 marks). Students will have to evaluate consequences to the business not having made these changes and suggest alternative changes that the business could make, drawing a conclusion saying which one would most likely happen (10 marks)

Ethics and Sustainability

State what ethics and sustainability means (2 marks) Give examples of ways businesses can act ethically and sustainably (4 marks each) Evaluate how businesses operate in an ethical manner and explain the issues associated to if the business does not (10 marks)

Economic behaviour

Identify and describe different economic factors in the exam (2/ 4 marks) Assess how businesses can react to changes in economic factors (4 marks) Students will need to evaluate the impact of economic behaviour for a business or their chosen case study (10 marks)

Software Students asked a variety of between 1 and 4 mark questions relating to types of software and choosing software for a given purpose with explanation

Data Students will be asked to convert between binary and hexadecimal (2 mark questions). Will have to complete binary addition question (2 marks)

Hardware One area of hardware tested, typically RAM / CPU and answer a mix of 1 Mark, 2 Mark and 3 Mark questions.

Algorithms Students will have to interpret either a flow chart of pseudocode by working through different scenarios. Short answer questions (2 marks). Students will then need to write their own part of a flowchart to solve a given problem (4 Marks)

Long Answer Questions

3 Long answer questions (6 Marks) students have to adapt knowledge to a real world problem. Always includes one question relating to Computing / Technology Laws
