CD longbox cut-off date not suitable to retailersThe newly formed, as yet unnamed, association of retailers and wholesalers, facedtheir first hurdle, doing battle with WEAMusic Canada and PolyGram. These twomajors have indicated they will be eliminatingCD packaging in January of 1990. However,a meeting with CRIA is apparently scheduledfor further discussion. The proposed cut-offdate is not suitable for the members *of thenew retailers and wholesalers association, which was expressed in a letter to bothPolyGram and WEA. Although the membersare in agreement with the elimination of CDpackaging, they are asking that September1st, 1990 be considered, as "a moreacceptable date."

    Apparently only PolyGram's Peter

    ULI t

Samantha Fox with the Michael Patrick Band'sMichael Patrick (I) and Pat Collins. PaparazziJ.J. Hollis caught the band promoting theirnew single, Doll Of The Mall, and their tour.

BMG Music Publishingscores Cross catalogueNick Firth, President of BMG MusicPublishing Worldwide, has announced theacquisition of Pop 'N' Roll Music andAnother Page, publishing companies ofGrammy -winning writer/artist ChristopherCross. As well, Cross has signed a worldwideco -publishing agreement with BMG Songs(ASCAP).

The Cross catalogue includes Sailing,Ride Like The Wind, Think Of Laura, NeverBe The Same, Say You'll Be Mine andArthur's Theme. which won an AcademyAward for Best Song of 1981. Currentlywriting songs for his next album, Cross madewhat is described as "the most acclaimeddebuts in contemporary popular music." Hisself -titled 1980 LP, which sold more thanfour million copies worldwide, earned himfive Grammys, including Record and Song ofThe Year for the No. 1 single, Sailing, whichtopped the RPM 100 singles chart on October11, 1980. His follow-up LP, Another Page, which went platinum in the U.S., containedhis hits All Right and Think Of Laura.

As Danny Strick, Vice President andGeneral Manager of BMG Songs notes,"Classics by Christopher Cross like Ride TheWind and Sailing clearly symbolize thebeginning of the '80s musically, and we feelthat this addition to our company fitsperfectly with our thrust toward building adynamic and contemporary catalogue."

Erdmann has responded, but he wasn'tprepared to make anv comment until "thegroup" (CRIA) could get together.

If WEA and PolyGram do discontinuetheir CD packaging on the proposed date,Saturn's Leonard Kennedy says, "We(Saturn) do have a security unit that we canget in place at store level . . . but it's a matterof timing. January is a very busy month forus. It's our accounts' year end, and we'refaced with many returns, pre -Christmaspromotions, and stock balancing at storelevel."

Kennedy continues, "If, for instance, our accounts want the unit for allmanufacturer CDs; MCA, BMG, CBS andCapitol, (who have not made any changes),then we are faced with extra cost at ourwarehouses by taking the jewel box out of theexisting packaging. We would also have tochange all the stock at store level with the newsecurity unit, that in itself takes three monthsto do across Canada, which would be veryexpensive for us."

A further meeting was to be held by theassociation on August 15, at which time theyexpect to come up with a name, and tofurther look into the CD packaging questionas well as other means of merchandisingCDs.

In attendance at the first meeting of theassociation were: Sound Insight (A&ARecords & Tapes), Group De Musique/T.C.,Handleman of Canada, HMV, MillbankMusic, Pind of f Record Sales, RoblanDistributors (Sam's), R . 0 WEntertainment, Saturn Distributing andSunrise Records & Tapes. Notin attendance, but reportedly in support of theassociation, were A&B Sound, National RecordDistributors and Total Sound.

"We have membership throughoutCanada," says Kennedy "and it's a prettystrong representation of record retailers andwholesalers." He continues with, "This is thefirst time an association like this has beenformed in Canada," stressing, "It'sCanadian . . . no affiliation with NARM."

Kennedy also points out that once themembership is formed and buoyed with feesfrom the original members, a membershipdrive will be launched, "to include the momand pop stores." He continues with, "Therewill be something in it for everybody . . . right

across the board, from shipping tofixturing," concluding with, "As anassociation, we'll be in a position to makedeals not only for the major companies butthe little guys as well."

HallmarkCards, the American parent, sent me acassette and compact disc of their new CarolsOf Christmas release, which features SarahVaughan, Samuel Ramey and The MormonTabernacle Choir. They do all the oldtraditional Christmas stuff, and it'sbeautifully done. Did I hear from theCanadian operation? Funny you should ask.No, but I called them, but I guess I didn'thave to be reminded that they're not in therecord business. (EC: You should have triedW.H. Smith . . . !)

A station with heart ... ! Q107's Rockin'John Derringer was "Johnny -on -the -spot"(EC: Is that a pun?) when he picked up on alocal news item in one of Toronto's dailies. Aseventeen year old Toronto youth had beenfined $107 for innocently parking a drunkdriver's truck . . . and being that John is a

supporter of the on -going battle againstdrinking and driving . .. he called the kid andoffered to pay for the ticket on behalf ofQ107. Obviously it was an offer that couldn'tbe refused and as a footnote John says,"Drinking and driving is probably the mostunhip thing someone can do." (EC: Righton. . . John!)Talk about impersonal ... ! Most people inthe industry, that I know, don't really expectto get a drooly letter thanking them forlending a hand, financially or otherwise toevents that happen within the industry. It's anice touch . . when well done, but to receivea form letter, addressed to "Dear Sponsor",and signed "The Committee", with little inbetween, is a little hard to take. I'd rather notbe thanked. (EC: When you're losing all thatbusiness, it's hard to remember your name!)

You gotta get up before dawn ... ! to beatSunrise. While all the talk has been going onabout the soft, soft and softer retail scene, the Sunrise people have been enjoying one oftheir best quarters for some time. A majorfactor in this success is their attitude. They'repromoting the hits, catalogue . . . andcountry! The hits are never any problem, butwhen you can effectively position countryand the real solid catalogue product, youhave an extra edge . . . and that's what theSunrise stores have done. (EC: You meansomeone's catering to the 25 to 49 agegroup . . . ?)

Seals & Crofts re-enter spotlight with Peace TourTen years ago, for personal and musicalreasons, the soft -rock duo of Seals & Croftscalled it a day. This summer marks theirreturn to the stage and finds them with plansunderway for future studio efforts.

The Peace Concert Tour, the occasion oftheir reappearance, was conceived of after, eight months ago, the pair was invited by theLos Angeles Ba-hai community to present adocument entitled The Promise of WorldPeace to the film and music industries. Theprimary purpose of the tour is to promote aplan for peace as outlined in this document, but, assures Jimmy Seals, each date will be,first and foremost, a musical event. "We'regoing to have the document there and we'regoing to announce the purpose of our tour,"he informs, "then we're going to play musicand not talk about it anymore until after theconcert."

The tour itself, consisting of eightshows, interestingly will take place entirely inCanada, which Seals describes as "a spiritualSwitzerland". "Canada has been responsiblefor so many movements and has always beenable to clearly state what their position wason the issues, a little more clearly than someof the other countries," he offers inexplanation.

Water Music, a new record labelcarrying Doug Cameron, who will be thesupport act for Seals & Crofts, is presentingthe Peace Concert Tour. "They're trying togive some new artists a break," relates Seals,"and they're trying to do some things thatcontribute some kind of service to mankind."

In addition to wanting to spend moretime with their families, the duo decided tostop recording because they felt that themusic they were producing was not well -suited to the rapidly changing popular tastesof the late seventies. "This was along aboutthe time that disco music had come in," Sealsrecalls. "We found ourselves with aborderline disco hit record called You're TheLove," he elaborates, "and we went out ontour, but we found ourselves in a Club 54kind of situation.

"There are certain kinds of songs thatwe just can't do," he admits, "It just doesn'tsound normal for us to do it. It doesn't soundbelievable and it's really not from ourhearts." Concluding that this was not whatthey wanted to do, the pair split, Sealsmoving to Costa Rica where he has a coffeefarm, Dash Crofts settling in Nashville afterliving in Mexico and Australia.

Seals offers an informed outsider's over-view of the changes that have taken place inpopular music during his decade departurefrom the arena. "There's a dual process Isee," he states. "One is that all of thetechnological advancements have put musicin the hands of people who normally couldn'tafford to do it."

On the negative side of the ledger, "I feellike the dynamics have been lost in recordsquite a lot," he suggests, and "there's acertain spirit to that [live music] that's beenlost, and I think there's a meaninglessnessthroughout everybody's lives at this time inthe world and I think that the music reflects

that."The contemporary music scene, he feels

will be much more open to his style of musicthan it was ten years ago. "According towhat some of the record people haveexpressed," he states, "they're havingproblems with new artists: Unless they'rereally really dynamite, their lifespan is soshort and the competition is so great . . . inorder to sell records they're going back to thesixties and the seventies and trying to tapsome of the oldies but goodies marketbecause there are certain elements in thosesongs that are universal in their appeal.

"We're getting as much airplay in theUnited States now as we got when we wereout promoting the records when they werefresh," he declares. "When we get our BMIstatements, it reflects that that was a creativetime in music that people like . . . Some of therecord executives have expressed that theycan sell more records with older orestablished artists than with new."

With this in mind, Seals & Crofts plan tore-enter the studio for another kick at thecan. "We'd like to have another album out, hopefully this year," says Seals. "We, atleast, have to try to give it a shot because Ireally feel that if you have something yotiwant to say and there's a forum to say it, getout there and do it." With both a messageand an outlet, in the form of The PeaceConcert Tour, all that remains to be seen iswhether the duo can find an audience thatwill support them as they make music gearedmore directly to the state of their hearts thanto the state of the charts.

What is there Behind The Green Fence?by Alexander Veretennikov (Novosti Free Press)

Following is an interview by AlexanderVeretennikov of the Novosti Free Press, withMarianna Algina, editor of Behind TheGreen Fence, a rock paper recently launchedin Tallinn, Estonia.

Our publication helps Estonian rockbuffs shape their own judgement on the basisof personal impressions, rather thanhackneyed lamentation about some rockthreat from the West.

A whole generation of musicians weredriven "into basements" by the official banon rock music . . . and yet, Estonia's bestsongs for 1989 were Non -Nuclear Estoniafrom the rock band Data, Lord Save TheKing from the punk outfit Vennaskond, andHands Up, Virumaa of the heavy metalI. M .K .E.

The demanding and critical position ofour rock newspaper regarding the diversity ofpopular music in Estonia helped youngpeople tell the difference betwen genuine artand the mediocre product of rock pusherswho profit from public ignorance and semi-official denunication of rock.

With our help, rock bands now playdates at prestigious sites which they couldn'teven dream of a short time ago. However, bureacrats have done a good job at alienatingrock musicians, squeezing them like lemonsand then throwing them away. Most rockmusicians were denied subsidies from thegovernment after they had played dozens ofexhausting tours around the country for

token renumeration. But our paper hasconvinced Tallin's Komsomol committee togive them financial assistance.

We are a profitable publication and wepay all our expenses. The Green Fence is amonthly with a circulation of 15,000. Ourstaff are not professionals, but the quality isprofessional.

Leningrad's Rock Club and Moscow'sRock Lab print their newspapers, but theydon't have modern equipment, while ours aretop-notch facilities.

The newspaper is our main tool ofspeaking to young people. The overwhelmingmajority of them listen to rock music, andtheir interest in heavy metal, disco, newwave, punk, and in particular, performers, acts as a character -forming factor and as abasis for friendships. Our contributors dealwith it. Most of them are scholars, teachers, critics, philosophers, musicians from boththis country and abroad.

In the Brezhnev era, many problemswere dealt with at the expense of youngpeople, the most energetic and cooperativesegment of society. As a result, they lostconviction, their belief in the feasibility of thegoals proclaimed. Today, young people arenow the driving force of perestroika. But theywant to live well now . . . not in some distantfuture. The Behind The Green Fence helpsyoung people think about the world aroundthem in quiet, letting them be what they are.

All tracks are key and the leadsingle, Blow At High Dough, a certainadd for both AOR and CHR. This bandhas come a long way since their debutrelease, clearly defining their gutsyelectric sound while displaying aquieter, but not gentler, side withseveral acoustic flavoured cuts, inparticular, the rootsy Boots Or Hearts.

    HOODOO GURUS Magnum Cum Louder

    RCA 9781 -1 -R -N

This is the fourth release for the Gurus, and fans who were expecting another

great set of songs like 1987's Blow Your Cool may be in for a

disappointment, but just a slight one, Come Anytime is single number one,

an acoustic -guitar based rocker that stands out from the rest of the LP, but that's unfortunate because in the past

the Gurus have proved to be one of Australia's more exciting bands. There

is a slight resemblance to Midnight 011 on some tracks which may account for

their popularity down under. If you try hard enough you may eventually come

to like this album, but die hard Gurus fans will probably file it away after only

    a couple of listens. DS

    EDGAR WINTER -

    Pop/Rock Mission Earth - Rhino - R170709F

Talk about a blast from the past. Winter is back with a new LP, and unlike some of his contempories who

are trying to recapture the sound of their glory days, this LP is mighty fresh. This is a concept album a la

Townshend's Iron Man. This time, the music is based on a series of science fiction books of the same name by L

Ron Hubbard, with all the lyrics written by the author. Winter fans of old will

    like this album -

it ain't Frankenstein, but his talent as a musician really

shows. Try Treacherous Love or Cry Out. - DS

    DARYL BRAITHWAITE - Pop Edge

    - CBS Associated - FZ-45206-H

Unless you lived in Australia in the mid -seventies, you've probably never

heard of this guy. His former group, Sherbert, was a very hot band a dozen

or so years ago, winning all sorts of Australian music awards left and right.

This is Braithwaite's first North American release, a collection of better

than average NC tunes featuring solid vocals and tight production. Worth noting to programmers is the Inclusion

of two of Ian Thomas tracks, As The Days Go By and All I Do, the former being a good bet for airplay. The

cassette features three bonus tracks, including a cover of Peter Gabriel's I

    Don't Remember. DS
