The Gateway Debriefing Skills Workshop

The Center for Medical Simulation’s Gateway Debriefing Skills Workshop introduces healthcare education faculty to the foundational practices of the “Debriefing with Good Judgment” ©

method of debriefing. This innovative Workshop combines a day long immersive in-person learning experience with online learning that includes customized peer to peer and mentor feedback.

Designed For Busy Healthcare Educators

Designed for the busy healthcare educator with limited time, the Gateway Debriefing Workshop:

Helps meet the demands of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) Simulation Guidelines for Pre-licensure Nursing Programs

Immerses participants in the deliberate practice of debriefing with skills acquired using Debriefing with Good judgment. Participants will have the opportunity to:

Learn how to efficiently improve future performance

Learn how to set high standards while holding high regard for the learner

Treat learners as thinkers and not just doers

Practice various debriefing phases

Connects participants to a community of colleagues where they can continually develop and improve their debriefing, feedback, and bedside teaching skills

This Gateway Debriefing Workshop is intended to be an introduction to the Debriefing With Good Judgment method of debriefing and can serve as a gateway to CMS’ multi-day Simulation Instructor Programs held at CMS in Boston and around the world. The Gateway Workshop will be facilitated by a lead CMS faculty member and a team of talented co-facilitators who have been trained by CMS.

Additional Details for Nursing Programs

Nursing programs whose faculty attend the Gateway Workshop will be able to provide evidence of meeting the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) guidelines by demonstrating that:

There is a commitment on the part of the school for their simulation program, as evidenced by budgetary planning for faculty training

Lead faculty and simulation lab personnel are qualified to conduct simulation, as evidenced by the certificate of completion and contact hours that will be awarded at the completion of the Workshop.

Gateway Debriefing Workshop Director

Mary Fey, PhD, RN is on the faculty of the Center for Medical Simulation in Boston and is an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland, School of Nursing. She has been responsible since 2007 for developing clinical simulation programs, integrating simulation into nursing curricula, and designing simulation labs. Currently, her work focuses on faculty development for simulation educators. Dr Fey is a co-author

of the Standard of Best Practice for Simulation: Standard VI, The Debriefing Process. She serves on the research committee of the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation in Nursing, and on the Certification Committee of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. Dr. Fey holds a PhD and a Post-Master’s Certificate in Teaching from the University of Maryland.

Founded in 1993, The Center for Medical Simulation (CMS) was one of the world's first healthcare simulation centers and continues to be a global leader in the field. At CMS the focus is on communication, collaboration, and crisis management training in order to develop skills and teamwork behaviors that are best learned actively under realistic conditions. Since it first opened in 1993, CMS has trained thousands of participants in its innovative and challenging programs.

Specific NCSBN Guidelines addressed by participating in this Workshop include:

Faculty Checklist:

The simulation program is based on educational theories associated with simulation, such as experiential learning theory.

The faculty members are prepared by following the INACSL Standards. (i.e. criteria included in Standard IV, Facilitation; Standard V, Facilitator; and Standard, VI, The Debriefing Process).

The faculty members are prepared to create a learning environment that encourages active learning, repetitive practice, and reflection and to provide appropriate support throughout the each activity.

The program utilizes a standardized method of debriefing using a Socratic methodology.

Program Checklist:

The simulation program has an adequate number of dedicated trained simulation faculty members to support the learners in simulation-based experiences.

The program has a plan for orienting faculty members to their roles.

Gateway Debriefing Workshop Details

Each Gateway Debriefing Workshop is able to enroll up to 50 participants and has two required components:

2 hour online session held approximately 2 weeks before the workshop.

Day long In-person workshop held at the Center for Medical Simulation in Boston and at host sites throughout the United States.

Participants will also be provided with the opportunity to connect online with a growing community of simulation colleagues where they can continue to develop and improve their debriefing and feedback skills.

Healthcare providers will receive a "Certificate of Attendance" with credit hours that can be used to apply for continuing education credits.
