Gamification within Saba CloudLearning professionals have known for a long time that activities that stimulate practice and interactivity among learners result in much more effective programs. The challenge has been the time and effort it took to assemble and integrate tools that could help.

Saba Cloud is a complete, fully unified talent management suite, including a robust learning management solution that’s built on a foundation of collaboration and intelligence. To make learning more engaging and impactful, Saba Cloud has incorporated a number of gaming elements right into the solution. Gaming elements such as competition, achievement, recognition, and rewards can not only capture the attention of employees, but encourage their continued participation in the desired activity — perhaps sharing their own insights across a community of practice, taking more training classes to achieve leadership status, or recognizing peers for a job well done. Saba Cloud enables gamification in a variety of ways, as described below.

Activity FeedAs soon as they log in, users will see the activity feed, which is personalized to each individual within the organization, instantly displaying relevant insights that will drive communication, positive behavior, and friendly competition.

The activity feed updates continuously, and employees can choose to filter content by author, keyword, and content type to quickly find what they need. They can share thoughts, ideas, links, and other content, as well as comment, rate and “like” any feed item.

Enable a continuous stream of insights and sharing with the activity feed

3

BadgesAs employees complete assigned learning, they will earn badges and be publicly acknowledged for doing so. Badges provide a sense of reward for employees continually working toward their development goals, and are socialized on the activity feed to enable a bit of friendly competition between peers.

Provide a sense of reward for accomplishments with badges

ImpressionsImpressions are a form of recognition that are shared or socialized throughout the company. Employees enter positive feedback for their peers, and the comments are seen in the activity feed where all have access, and reflected on their profile. Organizations can foster an environment of positive feedback and friendly competition as employees compete to receive the greatest number of impressions. Some organizations may take it a step further and provide rewards — for example, running quarterly meetings in which those with the greatest number of impressions receive a prize. At the same time, additional constructive feedback can be provided privately, only for the eyes of the recipient (e.g. “You could be even better if ….. “), ensuring that more specific feedback can be shared alongside positive, public praise.

Compete for the highest pQ score by sharing relevant, valuable insights

Enable peer recognition with public impressions as well as private feedback

pQ ScoreThe pQ, or “People Quotient” score, ranks the contributions made by employees, and awards points based on not just the content shared, but how many individuals found it useful by viewing it, commenting on it or rating it highly. Leverage pQ scoring to encourage healthy competition across employees to not only share content, but share content that is helpful across the organization.

5

Leader BoardsKeep everyone engaged by recognizing their efforts publicly with leader boards. Employees can watch the leader board from a widget on their personalized home page, and track their activities versus others. pQ leaders, as well as top contributors of content and insights show up on the board, and can be followed at the click of a button to ensure their insights are received.

Gamification in TestingAdding a gaming component to testing and assessment can be a highly effective way to ensure employees retain key insights. The Saba assessment features will help you accurately measure learner progress and program effectiveness, while introducing a variety of question types for a more interactive and memorable experience for learners. In addition to true/false, multiple choice, essay, and fill in the blank, more interactive types can be added. Matching questions can be added for a drag and drop experience. Hot spot questions can be added on top of imagery to enable questions like “Indicate the typical failure point in this machine.” Hints and time limits can also be added to make questions easier or more challenging.

Leverage hot spot and matching questions to make assessment more engaging

Gamification in Virtual ClassroomsThe key to an effective virtual class is getting the learners to participate and do more than simply watch what’s happening on the screen. A number of activities can be run through Saba Meeting (the web conferencing solution for virtual classrooms, meetings, and webinars, embedded throughout Saba Cloud), to enable interactivity.

Leverage emoticons, polls, whiteboarding, and more to enable games and interactivity

Cultivate, vote on, and refine ideas to drive innovation, problem solving, and more

Common tools to use are polls to test knowledge or survey the audience, or chat to solicit feedback, enable discussion, and exchange insights. But trainers can also leverage features such as emoticons and whiteboarding for games. For example, questions can be posed and the first person (or team member) to raise their hand can answer it. Points can be given for yes/no questions leveraging green checks or red “x” emoticons. Whiteboarding rights can be given to all students or a few individuals to enable a variety of games. An example might be a contest to see who can most quickly identify a set of items on the screen and mark them all with a star — such as which gauges do you need to view constantly while operating a machine.

IdeationSaba’s ideation capability provides a powerful way to cultivate and refine ideas to solve problems, drive innovation, prioritize projects and more. Employees can share ideas with others as easily as sharing a note or content in the activity feed. Once posted, ideas can be viewed by all, and voted up or down, enabling the best ideas to rise to the top. Others can also comment on the idea, and maybe suggest an even better solution. Winning ideas can spur awards and recognition as well, introducing a more competitive spin to it.

DNA (Dynamic Network Analysis)DNA, or Dynamic Network Analysis, is a visual representation of a network of people showing their collaboration patterns at work. Leverage it to see how people are connecting and interacting, both overall and within groups. Identify key contributors and influencers — including those with the most connections and activity who drive collaboration, organizational efficiency, and innovation. DNA provides a good way to visualize and measure the impact of many of the gamification components described above.

Leverage analytics to understand the impact of gamification and engagement across your talent processes in a unified fashion

SummaryThe information above describes some of the key elements that can be incorporated across your learning and talent initiatives to drive greater interactivity and effectiveness through gamification. Importantly, these components are most effective when leveraged together from a single platform, ensuring a consistent end-user experience that encourages usage and is measurable in a unified fashion — whether across virtual classroom interactivity, web-based training effectiveness, key contributors of insights, and more.

Saba Cloud provides a unified talent management suite that brings all of these components together, enabling more efficient and engaging teamwork, and helping to accelerate innovation and productivity across the workforce. Saba Cloud runs on Saba’s certified secure, scalable, and highly available global cloud.

Reports and DashboardsIn addition to DNA, Saba Analytics (of which DNA is a key component) enables you to leverage a set of more than 100 out-of-the-box reports, more than 2,100 exposed dimensions, and 260 metrics to build your own custom reports and dashboards across learning and talent management processes. More importantly, Saba Analytics allows you to measure across the interactivity of individuals within the system to understand the impact of gamification in a unified fashion.
