THIS WEEK: San Francisco will open West Coast Conference action Saturday, as it hosts Santa Clara. Tip-off against the Bay Area rival is slated for 2 p.m. at War Memorial Gym.

LAST OUTING: The Dons led by as many as 17 in the second half, but a last second basket downed USF on New Years Eve as San Francisco fell 79-77 in overtime to visiting Mount St. Mary’s. Kelly Jo Mullaney scored 23 points, while Donnisha Taylor recorded a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds.

LOOKING AHEAD: USF will continue its six game home stand hosting Saint Mary’s and San Diego on the Hilltop. The Dons and Gaels will tip, Thursday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m., while the Toreros will visit, Saturday, Jan. 15 at 2 p.m.

THREE’S COMPANY, ALMOST: The Dons put on a show from deep against Mount St. Mary’s on New Years Eve, draining a dozen 3-point baskets – eight of which came in the first half. The 12 baskets from beyond the arc fell one short of the single-game program record. The record of 13 baskets was set on Dec. 7, 2008 against Cal Poly. USF has hit 12 baskets on two previous occasions, Mar. 1, 2008 against Pepperdine and Dec. 1 against Massachusetts. Against The Mount, Kelly Jo Mullaney paced USF with five three’s and Katy Keating with four – all of which came in the first half.

DISHIN’ OUT THE GOODS: Against the Academy of Art on Dec. 29, USF dished out 26 assists. The 26 assists marks the highest single-game total for the Dons since the 2001-02 season. On Nov. 11, 2001, San Francisco posted 28 assists as USF defeated visiting Cal State Northridge 95-69 at War Memorial Gym. The school record for assists in a game is 34, set against UC Riverside, Nov. 19, 2000. Against the Knights this season, Rheina Ale and Brittany Brumfield led the charge for the Dons with five assists each.

DENIED!: Last week against the Knights, USF recorded nine blocks. The nine blocks marks the highest single-game total for San Francisco since the Dons recorded 10 in a 72-52 win at Gonzaga, Jan. 11, 2001. Against Academy of Art, two blocks paced USF from both Donnisha Taylor and Katy Keating. Rheina Ale, Kelly Jo Mullaney, Vania Singleterry, Bailey Barbour and Whitney Daniels each added one. So far this season, Barbour, who has posted 13 blocks, paces USF’s block brigade. Last season, no member of the USF roster recorded more than 11 blocks, while in 2008-09, Katy Keating posted 14. No Don has posted more than 15 blocks in a season since Lisa Olden posted 28 during the 2007-08 season.

PACK THE HOUSE VS. THE CARDINAL: Wednesday, Dec. 22, USF hosted No. 8/8 Stanford in the annual “Pack The House Challenge”. That night, WMG hosted 3,441 fans as the Dons fell to the Cardinal, handing head coach Tara VanDerveer her 800th win. The crowd marks a decade long program-high for the USF women’s program, while marking the third time in a dozen years USF women’s basketball has hosted a crowd of over 3,000 for a home game. Last season, USF faced Tennessee on the Hilltop as 3,255 watched on. In the 1999-2000 season opener, USF played Stanford at War Memorial Gym in front of 3,212.

OFFENSE HEATS UP: San Francisco and its opponents scored a combined 175 points in the games with Rhode Island and Sacramento State. That’s just 47 more points than what the Dons scored in the first four games of the season. USF put up 87 points against Rhode Island November 27 as part of the Holiday-Inn Express Midtown Tournament in Albuquerque, just to be bettered by 88 points December 1 at Sacramento State. The 88 points is the most points for USF since the Dons defeated Santa Clara 88-73, Feb. 23, 2008. The program record for points in a game is 105, 101 when playing on the road.

DONS FALL JUST SHORT OF SCORING RECORDS: At Sacramento State, the Dons and the Hornets combined to scored 194 points, as USF fell 106-88. The 194 total points fell six points shy of the school record for combined points of 200. USF and BYU combined to score 200 points on Nov. 23, 1984 as the Dons fell 119-81. The 194 points marks the most points scored in regulation since the record scoring game. Against Colorado State in 2007, USF and the Rams combined to score 197 points, but in three overtime periods, as CSU prevailed 101-96. In addition the 88 points scored in the loss Wednesday, marked the most points scored in a loss since San Francisco fell to US International, 93-91, during the 1985-86 season.

2010-11 VIRTUAL MEDIA GUIDE RELEASED: The University of San Francisco women’s basketball team is proud to unveil the 2010-11 USF Women’s Basketball Virtual Media Guide. The guide, which features videos and slide shows, can be accessed at USFDons.com or by visiting the following link: http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/8cf2aeee#/8cf2aeee/1.

JENNIFER AZZI ERA: This season marks the beginning of a new era on the Hilltop, as women’s basketball legend Jennifer Azzi begins her ap-pointment as head coach. Azzi, who was named to the helm of the program in April, brings an unprecedented wealth of basketball experience to the program. The 2009 Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame inductee played five seasons in the WNBA, was a founding member of the American Basketball League (ABL), played overseas and enjoyed an All-American collegiate career at Stanford. Internationally, Azzi was a member of the USA Basketball Senior National Team from 1990-91 and 1993-98. A key member of the United States gold medal-winning 1996 Olympic Team that concluded a perfect 60-0 season with an 8-0 record during the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Azzi played on 13 USA National Teams, compiling a mark of 114-14. She also medaled three times at the World Championships, claiming gold in 1998 and 1990, while earning a bronze in 1994.

ALE GAINING GROUND: Junior guard Rheina Ale enters the 2010-11 season looking to gain ground in the USF career-record books. The native of Carson, Calif., currently holds two spots in three career top-10 record books. Ale sits third in free throw %, shooting at a .811 (197-243) clip from the line, Carey Sauer (1999-04) holds the record, shooting 87.4% (382-437). The 2010 captain, Ale, is sixth in 3-pointers made, with 107. She recently surpassed Toni Russell (2001-05) and is on pace to break Shay Rollins (2005-09) school record of 205.

USF BASKETBALL RETURNS TO KUSF: USF women’s basketball returns to the airwaves and cyberspace for the 2010-11 season with a bulk of the games available on KUSF 90.3 in San Francisco and all games available on USFDons.com. Join George Devine for the play-by-play in his 15th year behind the mic for the Dons. Other features on USFDons.com include live stats with live play-by-play and streaming video of all home games courtesy of Yahoo Broadcast. This season’s online video stream will feature a new look featuring multiple camera angles from throughout War Memorial Gym.

SAN FRANCISCO PARTICIPATES IN THE 2010-11 JESUIT BASKETBALL SPOTLIGHT: USF is proud of its rich Jesuit heritage and the Dons will compete in a handful of games against fellow Jesuit schools during the 2010-11 season. The Dons take on longtime rival Santa Clara January 8, 2011 in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams. San Francisco is taking part in the Jesuit Spotlight Project for the third consecutive season, using Jesuit basketball to raise awareness of the outstanding education available at the nation’s 28 Jesuit colleges and universities. GAME #14 • MOUNT ST. MARY’S 77, USF 75 (OT)

SECOND HALF SLIDE CAUSES LOSS FOR WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

(San Francisco) - A last second basket downed the University of San Francisco women’s basketball team Friday, as the Dons dropped a 79-77 overtime decision to Mount Saint Mary’s at War Memorial Gym in San Francisco. San Francisco was up by as many as 17 in the second half, but a late push by The Mount forced a third period.

With just over a second remaining in overtime, Mount St. Mary’s (3-9) Selina Mann recorded a lay-up and the game-winning basket.

San Francisco (3-11) went up by 17 at 14:36 in the second half, but was then held to just three points over the next nine minutes. During the span, USF was held steady at 61 for six minutes as the Mountaineers took a 63-61 lead at 5:28.

For the remainder of regulation, the lead changed hands eight times. San Francisco had a 74-72 lead with 42 seconds remaining but Mount St. Mary’s forced overtime thanks to a lay-up to tie the game 74-74 with 14 ticks left. When USF in bounded the ball after the basket, The Mount promptly stole the ball, missing a lay-up and then stealing the rebound from USF. With one second remaining, Mount St. Mary’s missed a second lay-up, as it bounced off the rim, to force the overtime period.

The two teams remained within four points of each other for a majority of the first half. The pace changed at 6:42 as Katy Keating hit three straight baskets from beyond the arc to put USF up 32-27. The Dons held The Mount to just one field goal over the final 3:30 of the half to take a 43-34 lead into the locker room at halftime.

For the first half, USF hit eight 3-pointers, including four by Keating. The eight baskets from deep is one shy of the season-high for the Dons this season. USF finished the game with a dozen 3-pointers, falling one shy of the program record. Kelly Jo Mullaney led the attack with five baskets from beyond the arc.

Mullaney paced USF on the afternoon with 23 points, six rebounds, three assists and a steal.

The Dons’ Donnisha Taylor finished the afternoon with a double-double, her second of the season. Taylor scored 20 points, while pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds.

The Mount was led by Mary Dunn, who scored a game-high 26 points.

Friday’s game concluded the 2010-11 non-conference schedule for San Francisco. The Dons will open the 2011 West Coast Conference season Saturday, January 8 against Bay Area rival Santa Clara. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at War Memorial Gym.
