1. Follow e Right PeopleDo you really need to know what Peter Andre was having for lunch the other day? Don’t clog up your newsfeed with useless updates it’ll only cause you to waste time whilst job hunting. If you’re interested in a business, follow them. is is an easy way to keep up to date with what they’ve been up to and allows you to interact with them.

2. Revise Your Social Media DescriptionsDouble check the security settings on your page and nd out what others can see when searching your name online. Make visible your education and employment history as well as any relevant interests or links to blogs you follow. Hide or delete photographs you’re not proud of and any inappropriate posts.

3. Keep An Eye On Your FriendsSometimes social media embarrassment isn’t caused by what you write – it could be something one of your friends posts on your page. Enable the function which allows you to check all content before it’s posted onto your wall. Don’t let your friends ruin your reputation.

4. Keep Your CoolShow your interest in topical content without being over opin-ionated. It’s great to show you’re up to date with current events but just remember everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Being slightly forceful with your thoughts online can come across as arrogant and could put o potential employers.

5. Create a LinkedIn account LinkedIn is used to help connect professionals, encourage collaboration and help people nd the sta and jobs they’re looking for. It also allows you to view the people who have been looking at your prole and this is a great way of gauging whether prospective recruiters are interested in you. Keep your page up to date and don’t be shy when it comes to linking in with others.

Before the explosion of social media, recruiters would look at your cover letter and CV before moving onto the interview stage. Now all it takes is a quick name search on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram before they get to know the real you. Make sure you clean up your act and present the best possible version of yourself online before applying for your desired career. Don’t let that drunken photo from last weekend jeopardise your chances, bin it and follow our 5 tips to boost your online prole.

DO your research. Make sure you know about the company, how they work and who to impress.

DO ask for feedback. Set objectives for yourself and review your progress by asking for constructive criticism from members of sta.

DO become a member of the team. Speak up during meetings and brainstorming sessions if you feel like you have something to add. Being condent will make you more memorable.

DON’T worry if you feel nervous on your rst day. It’s all about identifying how the business works and establishing relationships with colleagues, this won’t happen overnight.

DON’T waste the opportunity. Don’t allow yourself to be underused, if you’re looking for something else to do, ask! Don’t sit on Facebook and count the minutes until lunch.

DON’T stay in your comfort zone. Learn as many new things as you can and if you’re confused or struggling at any point ask for help.

NEVER let anyone take advantage of you. Never agree to doing menial tasks like licking envelopes for hours or cleaning out dirty cupboards. Your time is better spent elsewhere.

NEVER leave without getting valuable names and contact details. is is your chance to stay in touch and add to your CV references.

Internshipse Good, e Bad & e Pointless

As we all know, securing a full time job is no easy task. In a number of industries, having experience in relevant elds is essential to getting a job. e best internships will provide you with a real insight into the dynamics of the business whilst giving you an opportunity to gain transferable skills, network and boost your CV. But beware of the pointless ones too. If you nd yourself licking envelopes and going on lunch runs, chances are your time could be better spent elsewhere. Help yourself to some of our handy tips:

"Never agree to doing menial tasks like licking envelopes for hours or cleaning out dirty cupboards."

Here's how:Clubs and SocietiesMost institutions will have a whole array of student-run extra-curricular activities. e University of Glasgow alone has over 200. Maybe you want to play a sport that you never could at school (water-polo, anyone?) or get your thespian on in student theatre. If your college does not oer what you want, set up your own society. ‘Self-starting’ is a buzzword for employers, plus you get to do things on your own terms.

InternshipsIf you already have a career path in mind, internships are an op-portunity to get skills while you still have the spare time. ink of it as being paid in experience. Contact your local paper, law rm or hospital and see if they will take you on over the Easter break. If you impress, you never know where a placement might take you in future.

VolunteeringEven if your student loan doesn’t allow you to donate huge sums in aid, your time and energy can be just as valuable to charities. Help people in need by training to be a Samaritan. Organise a fundraiser like an Oxjam Music Festival event by being organ-ised and creative. Or put in a few hours weekly at the SSPCA. Good for the conscience and the CV.

Part-time workNot everyone can aord to invest their non-study time in unpaid endeavours. A part-time job need not set you back. ink about how you can make the most of your shis. Does the company oer on-the-job training and promotion? What transferable skills have you learned? (N.B. Making barista-level coee might be exactly what makes you popular in an oce.)

Supplement your studies or try something completely dierent - either way, Carpe Diem!

A Degree is Not Enough - Network, Network, Networkby Ellen MacAskill

So you work hard at school. You trawl through prospectuses. You get into higher education, do some studying, and in four years you are ready for the job market. Right? Wrong. Sorry to sound pessimistic, but today a degree alone will not cut it.

University is your time for transition and growth. As Lena Dun-ham once put it, your main job is to “be yourself ”. Networking with peers and professionals will help you get your foot in the door. Make memorable connections. Aer all, it is about who you know. Gain experience, learn new skills and build up an impressive CV.

Fake it until you make it may sound like the most stupid advice anyone could ever give to someone hoping to pin down their dream role, but it could be the best advice you ever get.

When social psychologist Amy Cuddy presented her 18 minute Ted Talk - Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are - to an Edinburgh audience back in 2012 it caused many, quite literally, to sit up and pay attention.

What Is It?Alongside her partner in the study, Dana Carney, Cuddy set up an experiment focusing on non-verbal expressions of power and how they a ect people’s behaviours and hormone levels. e talk focused on showing that ‘faking’ certain poses associated with dominance and power or ‘power posing’ just before stressful situations - such as job interviews - tends to make individuals perform much better than if they adopted ‘low power poses’.

e Science BitIt works by increasing testosterone levels in the body. By adopting a pose related to dominance our bodies instinctively react by releasing endorphins, making us take greater risks. Furthermore, cortisol levels - usually released during stress - are shown to decrease.

When Should I Do It?Anytime you’re feeling under pressure, stressed or nervous take two minutes and go away to a quiet space - a bathroom cubicle would work. Once you’ve found a quiet spot, adopt one of the ‘power poses’.

What Not To DoStay away from any pose which makes you shrink into the background, curling up or hunching over will have the opposite e ect.

Have FunNot only is it scienti cally proven to work but it’s also a bit of a laugh too. When was the last time an adult genuinely told you that pretending to be Superman could be bene cial to your career? is is advice you should de nitely take.

The Power of Posing (and how it could help you land your dream job)

What Are The Poses? e Pride Pose ink Usain Bolt crossing the nishing line at the Olympics, arms spread wide in dominance.

e Superhero Pose ink Superman or Wonder Woman. Hands on the hips with legs spread evenly.

A fresh new alternative to the traditional university experienceFor Sophie, all doubts were put to rest on her first day at work. “Walking into the KPMG building, realising this is where I work, and getting involved in the business side of life when you’re 18. That’s exciting!”

Sophie is one of a growing pool of talent who didn’t have to choose between starting a career or going to university straight after their A-Levels or Scottish Highers. Because KPMG’s School and College Leaver Programme is something that allowed her to do both, which appealed to her straightaway.

“I didn’t know anything about accountancy or being an accountant. But as soon as I started looking into it, I found it was a lot more interesting than what the stereotype says.”

Unlike typical school leavers’ options such as apprenticeships, KPMG’s programme actually gives young people like Sophie the opportunity to get a university degree at one of England’s top universities – Durham University Business School, the University of Birmingham or the University of Exeter – as well as have all their tuition and accommodation fees paid for, and start their business careers right away – all without building up huge student tuition fees and accommodation debt.

Of course, going straight into work is a big decision for anyone to make.

“I was definitely worried about moving out of home to go to London”, says Sophie. “That’s terribly daunting when you’re 18 – but there’s loads of support available to you. Plus, there’s always a long-term goal to reach, so every day you feel like you’re working towards something.”

The programme isn’t just about getting a foot in the door. It aims to serve as a foundation for young people to develop the skills to build a successful future, exposing them to a range of different businesses from day one.

“The most important thing I’ve learned so far is how different the business world is from the school world. It’s not like homework that you can just redo if it isn’t right – you have to go out of your way to ask questions if you’re not sure on something. Everything you do matters – you have real responsibility.

I know it isn’t for everyone, but if you’re worried about uni fees, know what you want to do and are keen to get started in your career, it’s definitely an option.”

“And”, she adds, “wearing a suit every day and getting off the tube at Canary Wharf is pretty exciting!”

Food Standards Agency Scotland (FSAS) operates within the UK Food Standards Agency and our commitment is to improve food safety and standards in Scotland and protect the health of Scotland’s population in relation to food. is includes handling issues involving:

• Food standards, nutrition and diet• General food hygiene, sh, shellsh and milk hygiene• Hygiene controls on meat and meat products• Regulation of animal feeding stus• Novel foods, radiological safety and emergencies• Providing technical advice and ensuring compliance

with legislation

It takes a wide variety of professions and specialist roles for FSAS to deliver what it sets out to. From meat hygiene inspectors out visiting plants to teams campaigning for improved food labelling to help consumers make better decisions, and from teams who monitor biotoxin levels at shellsh farms to event organisers who arrange for us to personally engage with the public.

And at FSAS that is genuinely one of our favourite things to do – get out and speak to people face to face to provide advice on issues that concern them in relation to food safety and eating a healthy diet. We visit dierent people and communities at a range of places and of varied situations and backgrounds. One week we could be bringing cooking lessons to children and adults across Scotland via the Healthier Scotland Cooking Bus, which we have partnered in since its launch in 2008, the next we could be quizzing you on food safety in your local shopping centre.

at's a little bit of what we're trying to bring to you today at Futures Fest – a snapshot of our approach and the key messages we strive to deliver. A contact point where you can come and ask us anything about an aspect of the organisation you'd like to know more about. Drop by and have a chat with us today, have a go at one of our food safety questionnaires and hopefully learn something new, whether it's about your hygiene practises at home or the work we do across Scotland.

Gap years, student exchange programmes and seasons abroad have become increasingly popular with students over the years, and while it’s a fun experience, it can also help you to further your career. Employers are not just xated on whether or not you have a degree, but also how much work and life experience you can bring to their company. From Camp America to teaching English in a foreign country, there are hundreds of opportunities for you to gain the experience you need to boost your career. We talked to students, Megan Duncan and Katie Wilson who have both taken time to travel:

What did you do abroad and for how long?Megan: I went abroad to Au Pair for an Italian family in San Martino Buon Albergo for a little under 4 months. I was there to teach English to the two children aged 11 and 9, working from 9am until 2pm, with aernoons and weekends free to travel and explore. I was lucky enough to be able to spend my weekends visiting various cities, meeting people, living with locals and seeing all the sights. e family treated me like one of their own and we still keep in touch.

Was the expense of travelling worth it?Megan: e experience was 100% worth it

- I met so many amazing people from all over the world that I still keep in touch with, learnt so much about the culture, saw so many sights and got an amazing sun tan - what more can you ask for!

Katie: It’s pretty expensive, and almost impossible to stick to a budget unless you don't want to do any activities (the best part). It’s true that travelling is a once in a lifetime opportunity so unless you have saved up and are willing to spend you won't get the most out of it. I seen some of the most amazing sights from Machu Picchu to Bondi Beach, I surfed in some of the nicest oceans, explored wildlife in Austrailia, climbed Mountains in New Zealand, visited jungles in Asia and so much more!

How has the experience helped you in life?Megan: Italy made me grow up and realise that you can really go out and do anything you put your mind to. I learned that spontaneity and trust are two of the most benecial things. I was able to communicate with people despite the initial language barrier, to be self-sucient, and grow in condence in general. When I rst told people I was going they thought I was crazy to live with strangers but a stranger is simply a friend you don’t know yet- I know a little naive in some contexts but as long as you do your research and are sensible about it then I think that applies.

Katie: Yes, I would say it has helped me. I met so many people, was introduced to dierent cultures, tried dierent foods, seen so many sights. Some experiences I liked and some I didn't but everyone

I am grateful for. It taught me so much and I feel I learned a lot about myself, how I want to live my life and where I want to be – CANADA! Even some of the negative experiences like witnessing the poverty of the people in Cambodia or the orphans in Fiji can be benecial. I was able to volunteer and now I am aware of these conditions, not just through the news but rst hand, and I want to continue to help these people. e experience of travelling has greatly helped me in life and it continues to help me in making decisions in the next stage of my life.

What would you say to other students considering travelling?Megan: DO IT! Travelling and learning about other cultures can easily inuence your work and mind set when it comes to university. Don’t always think about travelling as a holiday but as a tool to further your life experience that will no doubt inuence your decisions aer you graduate. For myself, I think I discovered that travelling is a true passion of mine and something that I hope to shape my degree and qualication around, rather than revolving my interests around my degree and working life; so go out, explore, and nd something beyond what university can give you!

Katie: I would say go for it! Yes it’s expensive but so is going to Ibiza or T in the Park and you get far more out of world travelling. Memories and experiences that you will remember and that will help you throughout your life. Trust me it’s a worthwhile investment!

1. PresentationA structured CV with a simple layout on crisp A4 paper reects a well-presented employee. It’s the simple things such as folding the paper neatly and putting it in a clean envelope that can make the dierence - if you’re as well-suited for the job as other applicants but the CV is crumpled or dirty, it could put you out the game. ere are lots of free CV templates available online to download.

2. Make it RelevantAdapt your CV to suit the role. Don’t be lazy - write the position you’re applying for underneath the title and include suitable experience that relates to the job.

3. Include the BasicsAll CVs should include personal contact information, qualications, work experience/skills and references. ese can be bullet-pointed - be clear and concise. Don’t wae on about your love of yoga or reading, use this space to include useful skills relevant to the role.

4. Sell Yourself

Use positive language throughout your CV and showcase your skills. Don’t boast but be condent about your abilities and describe why past experiences have developed your work ethic. A ‘can-do’ attitude is completely necessary and make yourself diverse in the personal interest section. For example, if you enjoy going to the cinema - what genre interests you most? If you go running - what was the last 10K you completed? Give the employer a feel for who you are.

5. Keep It Up to DateAlways list your work history beginning with your most recent experience. Include recent volunteering opportunities or new projects you’re working on - show the employer that you enjoy being busy.

Do you think your career dreams are unrealistic? Are you considering a dead-end graduate job for the sake of ‘making money’? Studying accountancy but dream of working for Vogue? In our contemporary education system, the pressure to choose a higher education course is thrust upon us at a young age. Being young is coupled with impulsive decisions and that includes lots opting for courses that seem to be the ‘sensible’ option or sometimes, just the wrong course altogether. Unfortunately, many of us don’t realise our o-kilter choices until we’re actually halfway through our course and think it’s too late. Newsash: it isn’t too late and the only person who can turn it around is YOU.

1. Dream BigCliché yes - but ‘if your dreams don’t scare you, then they aren’t big enough’. If you spend your lectures daydreaming, good for you. Visualise your dreams to make them happen and be inspired. Research your chosen career no matter how far-fetched it may be, it’s better to try and fail than to not try at all - that way you’ll have no regrets.

2. Get ExperienceGetting a degree is CV gold but

employers want more. Jam-pack your diary with as many opportunities as possible - volunteer, join a society and dra applications for as many internships and work experience opportunities as possible. If you are seeking work experience unrelated to your degree, be honest in your cover letter and explain you’ve realised you might have made the wrong education choices. ere is a chance that employers will be understanding and eager to take on passionate individuals - they will want to showcase their industry to fresh open minds regardless of their study choices.

3. Brush Up Your People SkillsTo secure the experience you desire, it’s important to have a good front during interviews and phone calls. We’re all human beings - speaking to a panel of established business-leaders is daunting but they were in your position once. Know your subject and know yourself, if you have a natural passion for something, situations like this should be eortless. Be polite and hold eye contact (although you don’t want employers to think you’re trying to hypnotise them).

4. I hate what I’m doing - HELPIf your course is tedious and you’ve already passed the midway point, do not fret - act now. Most Universities/Colleges

have a helpful careers department who will happily discuss your options. ink about what it is you’re really passionate about and apply for work experience. If your degree doesn’t specialise in the career you want, make sure your work experience does. If it’s still early days, don’t be afraid of dropping out. It takes a strong person to realise they have made a wrong choice and to do something about it.

5. Don’t Be InuencedA lot of students hold back from pursuing their dreams because of pushy parents and clingy other halves. Some unfortunate students are forced into degrees they don’t want to do because their parents pay for their education and will only allow their children to study subjects that they deem acceptable. In this case, get through your degree and keep in mind that once you have graduated - the world is yours. You are free to start making your own money and choose your career path. Relationships should take a backseat when it comes to making life choices, don’t let anyone hold you back and if it means living in dierent cities (or countries) to jump start your dream career then let it be. Be selsh - your sole commitment at this stage should be to yourself and if you have a strong relationship, you’ll make it work.

The Importance of Soft SkillsSo you've updated your CV with all the quali cations and courses you think you need, you've written a covering letter that sells you even more, and you're invited to interview. It's a foot in the door, sure, but let's think about what else you need to bag your dream job. So skills are o en overlooked but they could be the only di erence between you and the next person through the door. To put it simply, so skills are what leaves employers with a general impression of what you're like. You might be the most highly quali ed person in the world but you won't get anywhere if people don't like you.

We all know rst impressions count, so try to make good ones.

Turn up on time. is is the easiest one. If you're late to your interview it gets people's backs up immediately, the same way it's a pain waiting for your friend who somehow always manages to miss the bus. Don't make your potential employer wait around for you.

Dress appropriately. And by this I don't just mean smart. I mean appropriate. For my last o ce interview I wore a suit because I knew everyone there wore suits. For my previous retail job I tailored a more casual out t to match their brand colours. Put a bit of thought into your out t and it'll be clear you've made an e ort.

Be polite.Massive tip - be super polite. Politer than you would be to your partner's parents, even. It's a simple, subtle way to make people like you. I once heard a story about a man who kept his earphones in during a job interview. Needless to say, this is not polite and he didn't get the job.

Be enthusiastic. Not about getting the job, but about the job itself. Of course the paycheck is a massive incentive, but that's not what the boss wants to hear. ey want to know why it should be you they hire, not someone else, and if you can show genuine enthusiasm for the job you'll tick the right box. It shows you'll engage with the work and an engaged worker is a better worker.

I once turned up to a job interview ve hours late, rain-soaked and annoyed (I'd gotten horribly lost), and I still got the job. I credit this to the fact that I was polite (apologising profusely), friendly, compassionate, and determined. Of course if I could have done that interview again I probably would have, but it's evidence enough that so skills can play a massive part in winning you a job.

Good luck!

"You might be the most highly

quali ed person in the world

but you won't get anywhere if

people don't like you."
