James, age 20, came to NULC from Berry Hill High School to study a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music Technology.

“My first lesson of the day is in Studio Engineering. I love this lesson because we get to use the College’s amazing Music Technology Suite which has top of the range equipment. Today we are learning how to use and set-up the equipment for recording and mixing a range of instruments.

Next I will be using the recording studio to record myself playing the guitar. I will later edit and mix this recording in my next Studio Engineering lesson after lunch.

For lunch I’m meeting a couple of friends and we’re going to walk into town for something to eat. Also, like most days, we will pop into the music store to check out the latest

instruments in stock and I need to buy some new strings for my guitar.

After lunch, before I have the next Studio Engineering lesson, I am helping out a friend to record their vocals, which will later be edited together with my guitar recording.

Then in my second Studio Engineering lesson of the day, taking from what I learnt this morning, I will now edit and mix my guitar recording and my friend’s vocals together – I can’t wait to hear it! You get a real buzz when you press playback and hear your own music sounding so professional. It’s awesome!”

Roxy, age 17, came to NULC from St Thomas More Catholic College to study A levels in Biology, Computing, English Language/Literature and Physical Education.

“My College day starts at around 8:45am.Like most students though, I arrive at 8:30am on Monday’s to catch up with friends before I go into Biology.

Then I have PE, which I love because I’m a member of the Elite Sports Programme. This was created to allow talented athletes to continue with their academic studies, whilst training and competing to the highest level.

At lunchtime I would either meet friends in the food hall, court yard or have a walk into town. Today though I’m meeting my friend in the Coffee Lounge for a Starbucks!

After lunch I’ve got English Language and Literature which I can’t wait for – my teacher brings so much enthusiasm and humour to the lesson.

To finish my day off I’ll go to the gym at the Gordon Banks Sports Centre, which is onsite at the College. It’s a great way to end the day and workout with my friends.”
