The Gospel According to
JOHNJUST as a coin has two sides, both valid, so Jesus Christ has two natures,
both valid. Luke presents Christ in His humanity as the Son of Man; Johnportrays Him in His deity as the Son of God. John’s purpose is crystal clear: toset forth Christ in His deity in order to spark believing faith in his readers.John’s gospel is topical as well as chronological, and it revolves around sevenmiracles and seven ‘‘I am’’ statements of Christ.
Following an extended eyewitness description of the Upper Room mealand discourse, John records events leading up to the Resurrection, the finalclimactic proof that Jesus is who He claims to be—the Son of God.
The title of the Fourth Gospel follows the same format as the titles of thesynoptic Gospels: Kata Ioannen, ‘‘According to John.’’ As with the others, theword ‘‘Gospel’’ was added later. Ioannes is derived from the Hebrew nameJohanan, ‘‘Yahweh Has Been Gracious.’’
IN the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and
the Word was God. v. 14; Gen. 1:12 He was in the beginning with
God. v. 18; 10:303 All things were made through
Him, and without Him nothing wasmade that was made. Col. 1:164 In Him was life, and the life
was the light of men. 1 John 5:115 And the light shines in the
darkness, and the darkness did notcomprehenda it. 3:19; Gen. 1:3–56 There was a man sent from
God, whose name was John. v. 157 This man came for a witness,
to bear witness of the Light, that allthrough him might believe. v. 298 He was not that Light, but was
sent to bear witness of that Light.9 That was the true Light which
gives light to every man coming intothe world.a Is. 49:610 He was in the world, and the
world was made through Him, andthe world did not know Him. v. 311 He came to His own,a and His
ownb did not receive Him. 19:5–1612 But as many as received Him,
to them He gave the right to becomechildren of God, to those who be-lieve in His name: 1 John 3:113 who were born, not of blood,
nor of the will of the flesh, nor ofthe will of man, but of God. 3:1–814 And the Word became flesh
and dwelt among us, and we beheldHis glory, the glory as of the only
begotten of the Father, full of graceand truth. v. 1; 3:16; 14:6; 18:3715 John bore witness of Him and
cried out, saying, ‘‘This was He ofwhom I said, ‘He who comes afterme is preferred before me, for Hewas before me.’ ’’ vv. 6–8; 3:22–3016 Anda of His fullness we have
all received, and grace for grace.17 For the law was given through
Moses, but grace and truth camethrough Jesus Christ. Ex. 20:118 No one has seen God at any
time. The only begotten Son,a whois in the bosom of the Father, He hasdeclared Him. 14:9; Ex. 33:2019 Now this is the testimony of
John, when the Jews sent priestsand Levites from Jerusalem to askhim, ‘‘Who are you?’’ 5:3320 He confessed, and did not
deny, but confessed, ‘‘I am not theChrist.’’ Luke 3:15, 1621 And they asked him, ‘‘What
then? Are you Elijah?’’ He said, ‘‘Iam not.’’ ‘‘Are you the Prophet?’’And he answered, ‘‘No.’’ Matt. 17:10–1322 Then they said to him, ‘‘Who
are you, that we may give an answerto those who sent us? What do yousay about yourself?’’23 He said: ‘‘I am

1221 JOHN 1:50
‘The voice of one crying in thewilderness: Is. 40:3
‘‘Make straight the way of theLORD,’’ ’ a
as the prophet Isaiah said.’’24 Now those who were sent were
from the Pharisees.25 And they asked him, saying,
‘‘Why then do you baptize if you arenot the Christ, nor Elijah, nor theProphet?’’26 John answered them, saying,
‘‘I baptize with water, but therestands One among you whom youdo not know. Luke 3:1627 ‘‘It is He who, coming after me,
is preferred before me, whose san-dal strap I am not worthy to loose.’’28 These things were done in
Bethabaraa beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 4:129 The next day John saw Jesus
coming toward him, and said, ‘‘Be-hold! The Lamb of God who takesaway the sin of the world! 1 Pet. 1:1930 ‘‘This is He of whom I said, ‘Af-
ter me comes a Man who is pre-ferred before me, for He was beforeme.’ v. 131 ‘‘I did not know Him; but that
He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with wa-ter.’’ Mal. 3:1; Matt. 3:632 And John bore witness, saying,
‘‘I saw the Spirit descending fromheaven like a dove, and He re-mained upon Him. Matt. 3:1633 ‘‘I did not know Him, but He
who sent me to baptize with watersaid to me, ‘Upon whom you see theSpirit descending, and remainingon Him, this is He who baptizeswith the Holy Spirit.’ Matt. 3:1134 ‘‘And I have seen and testified
that this is the Son of God.’’ 11:2735 Again, the next day, John stood
with two of his disciples.36 And looking at Jesus as He
walked, he said, ‘‘Behold the Lambof God!’’ v. 29; 19:36; Ex. 12:4637 The two disciples heard him
speak, and they followed Jesus.38 Then Jesus turned, and seeing
them following, said to them,‘‘What do you seek?’’ They said to
Him, ‘‘Rabbi’’ (which is to say, whentranslated, Teacher), ‘‘where areYou staying?’’39 He said to them, ‘‘Come and
see.’’ They came and saw where Hewas staying, and remained withHim that day (now it was about thetenth hour).40 One of the two who heard John
speak, and followed Him, was An-drew, Simon Peter’s brother.41 He first found his own brother
Simon, and said to him, ‘‘We havefound the Messiah’’ (which is trans-lated, the Christ). 4:25; Matt. 4:18, 1942 And he brought him to Jesus.
Now when Jesus looked at him, Hesaid, ‘‘You are Simon the son of Jo-nah.a You shall be called Cephas’’(which is translated, A Stone).43 The following day Jesus
wanted to go to Galilee, and Hefound Philip and said to him, ‘‘Fol-low Me.’’ 6:5, 7; 12:21, 22; 14:844 Now Philip was from Bethsa-
ida, the city of Andrew and Peter.45 Philip found Nathanael and
said to him, ‘‘We have found Him ofwhom Moses in the law, and alsothe prophets, wrote—Jesus of Naza-reth, the son of Joseph.’’46 And Nathanael said to him,
‘‘Can anything good come out ofNazareth?’’ Philip said to him,‘‘Come and see.’’ Matt. 2:2347 Jesus saw Nathanael coming
toward Him, and said of him, ‘‘Be-hold, an Israelite indeed, in whomis no deceit!’’ 1 Pet. 2:1, 2248 Nathanael said to Him, ‘‘How
do You know me?’’ Jesus answeredand said to him, ‘‘Before Philipcalled you, when you were underthe fig tree, I saw you.’’49 Nathanael answered and said
to Him, ‘‘Rabbi, You are the Son ofGod! You are the King of Israel!’’50 Jesus answered and said to
him, ‘‘Because I said to you, ‘I sawyou under the fig tree,’ do you be-lieve? You will see greater thingsthan these.’’ 14:12

51 And He said to him, ‘‘Most as-suredly, I say to you, hereaftera youshall see heaven open, and the an-gels of God ascending and descend-ing upon the Son of Man.’’ Gen. 28:12
2On the third day there was awedding in Cana of Galilee, and
the mother of Jesus was there.2 Now both Jesus and His disci-
ples were invited to the wedding.3 And when they ran out of wine,
the mother of Jesus said to Him,‘‘They have no wine.’’4 Jesus said to her, ‘‘Woman,
what does your concern have to dowith Me? My hour has not yetcome.’’ 7:30; 8:20; 12:27; 13:15 His mother said to the ser-
vants, ‘‘Whatever He says to you, doit.’’6 Now there were set there six
waterpots of stone, according to themanner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallonsapiece. Mark 7:37 Jesus said to them, ‘‘Fill the
waterpots with water.’’ And theyfilled them up to the brim.8 And He said to them, ‘‘Draw
some out now, and take it to themaster of the feast.’’ And they tookit.9 When the master of the feast
had tasted the water that was madewine, and did not know where itcame from (but the servants whohad drawn the water knew), themaster of the feast called the bride-groom. 4:4610 And he said to him, ‘‘Every
man at the beginning sets out thegood wine, and when the guestshave well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine untilnow!’’11 This beginning of signs Jesus
did in Cana of Galilee, and mani-fested His glory; and His disciplesbelieved in Him. 1:14; 4:5412 After this He went down to Ca-
pernaum, He, His mother, Hisbrothers, and His disciples; andthey did not stay there many days.13 Now the Passover of the Jews
was at hand, and Jesus went up toJerusalem. Deut. 16:1–6
14 And He found in the templethose who sold oxen and sheep anddoves, and the money changers do-ing business. Matt. 21:12, 1315 When He had made a whip of
cords, He drove them all out of thetemple, with the sheep and theoxen, and poured out the changers’money and overturned the tables.16 And He said to those who sold
doves, ‘‘Take these things away!Do not make My Father’s house ahouse of merchandise!’’ Luke 2:4917 Then His disciples remem-
bered that it was written, ‘‘Zeal forYour house has eaten a Me up.’’ b
18 So the Jews answered and saidto Him, ‘‘What sign do You show tous, since You do these things?’’19 Jesus answered and said to
them, ‘‘Destroy this temple, and inthree days I will raise it up.’’20 Then the Jews said, ‘‘It has
taken forty-six years to build thistemple, and will You raise it up inthree days?’’ Matt. 26:6121 But He was speaking of the
temple of His body. 20:12, 2022 Therefore, when He had risen
from the dead, His disciples remem-bered that He had said this to them;aand they believed the Scripture andthe word which Jesus had said.23 Now when He was in Jerusa-
lem at the Passover, during thefeast, many believed in His namewhen they saw the signs which Hedid. 3:224 But Jesus did not commit Him-
self to them, because He knew allmen, 21:17; Matt. 9:425 and had no need that anyone
should testify of man, for He knewwhat was in man. 6:64; 16:30
3There was a man of the Phari-sees named Nicodemus, a ruler
of the Jews. 8:50, 51; 19:39–422 This man came to Jesus by
night and said to Him, ‘‘Rabbi, weknow that You are a teacher comefrom God; for no one can do these

him, ‘‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannotsee the kingdom of God.’’ 1:12, 134 Nicodemus said to Him, ‘‘How
can a man be born when he is old?Can he enter a second time into hismother’s womb and be born?’’5 Jesus answered, ‘‘Most as-
suredly, I say to you, unless one isborn of water and the Spirit, he can-not enter the kingdom of God. 7:386 ‘‘That which is born of the flesh
is flesh, and that which is born ofthe Spirit is spirit. 6:637 ‘‘Do not marvel that I said to
you, ‘You must be born again.’ v. 38 ‘‘The wind blows where it
wishes, and you hear the sound ofit, but cannot tell where it comesfrom and where it goes. So is every-one who is born of the Spirit.’’ v. 69 Nicodemus answered and said
to Him, ‘‘How can these things be?’’10 Jesus answered and said to
him, ‘‘Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things?11 ‘‘Most assuredly, I say to you,
We speak what We know and testifywhat We have seen, and you do notreceive Our witness. Matt. 11:2712 ‘‘If I have told you earthly

that the light has come into theworld, and men loved darknessrather than light, because theirdeeds were evil. 1:4, 9–11; 8:4420 ‘‘For everyone practicing evil
hates the light and does not cometo the light, lest his deeds should beexposed. Eph. 5:11, 1321 ‘‘But he who does the truth
comes to the light, that his deedsmay be clearly seen, that they havebeen done in God.’’ 1 Cor. 15:1022 After these things Jesus and
His disciples came into the land ofJudea, and there He remained withthem and baptized. 4:123 Now John also was baptizing
in Aenon near Salim, because therewas much water there. And theycame and were baptized. Matt. 3:5, 624 For John had not yet been
thrown into prison. Luke 3:19, 2025 Then there arose a dispute be-
tween some of John’s disciples andthe Jews about purification.26 And they came to John and
said to him, ‘‘Rabbi, He who waswith you beyond the Jordan, towhom you have testified—behold,He is baptizing, and all are comingto Him!’’ v. 22; 4:127 John answered and said, ‘‘A

1224JOHN 3:31
31 ‘‘He who comes from above isabove all; he who is of the earth isearthly and speaks of the earth. Hewho comes from heaven is aboveall. v. 13; Matt. 28:1832 ‘‘And what He has seen and
heard, that He testifies; and no onereceives His testimony.33 ‘‘He who has received His testi-
mony has certified that God is true.34 ‘‘For He whom God has sent
speaks the words of God, for Goddoes not give the Spirit by measure.35 ‘‘The Father loves the Son, and
has given all things into His hand.36 ‘‘He who believes in the Son
has everlasting life; and he whodoes not believe the Son shall notsee life, but the wrath of God abideson him.’’ vv. 16–18; 1 John 5:10
4Therefore, when the Lord knewthat the Pharisees had heard
that Jesus made and baptized moredisciples than John 3:22, 262 (though Jesus Himself did not
baptize, but His disciples), 1 Cor. 1:143 He left Judea and departed
again to Galilee.4 But He needed to go through
Samaria.5 So He came to a city of Sa-
maria which is called Sychar, nearthe plot of ground that Jacob gaveto his son Joseph. Gen. 33:19; 48:226 Now Jacob’s well was there.
Jesus therefore, being wearied fromHis journey, sat thus by the well. Itwas about the sixth hour.7 A woman of Samaria came to
draw water. Jesus said to her, ‘‘GiveMe a drink.’’8 For His disciples had gone
away into the city to buy food. v. 329 Then the woman of Samaria
said to Him, ‘‘How is it that You,being a Jew, ask a drink from me, aSamaritan woman?’’ For Jews haveno dealings with Samaritans.10 Jesus answered and said to her,
‘‘If you knew the gift of God, andwho it is who says to you, ‘Give Mea drink,’ you would have asked Him,and He would have given you livingwater.’’ 7:38; Is. 12:3; 44:311 The woman said to Him, ‘‘Sir,
You have nothing to draw with, and
the well is deep. Where then do Youget that living water?12 ‘‘Are You greater than our fa-
ther Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as wellas his sons and his livestock?’’13 Jesus answered and said to her,
‘‘Whoever drinks of this water willthirst again,14 ‘‘but whoever drinks of the wa-
ter that I shall give him will neverthirst. But the water that I shall givehim will become in him a fountainof water springing up into everlast-ing life.’’ 7:37, 3815 The woman said to Him, ‘‘Sir,
give me this water, that I may notthirst, nor come here to draw.’’ 6:3416 Jesus said to her, ‘‘Go, call your
husband, and come here.’’17 The woman answered and
said, ‘‘I have no husband.’’ Jesussaid to her, ‘‘You have well said, ‘Ihave no husband,’18 ‘‘for you have had five hus-
bands, and the one whom you nowhave is not your husband; in thatyou spoke truly.’’19 The woman said to Him, ‘‘Sir, I
perceive that You are a prophet.20 ‘‘Our fathers worshiped on this
mountain, and you Jews say that inJerusalem is the place where oneought to worship.’’ Deut. 12:5, 1121 Jesus said to her, ‘‘Woman, be-
lieve Me, the hour is coming whenyou will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Fa-ther.22 ‘‘You worship what you do not
know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. Rom. 9:523 ‘‘But the hour is coming, and
now is, when the true worshiperswill worship the Father in spirit andtruth; for the Father is seeking suchto worship Him.24 ‘‘God is Spirit, and those who
worship Him must worship in spiritand truth.’’ 2 Cor. 3:1725 The woman said to Him, ‘‘I
know that Messiah is coming’’ (whois called Christ). ‘‘When He comes,He will tell us all things.’’ 1:4126 Jesus said to her, ‘‘I who speak
to you am He.’’ Matt. 26:63, 64

27 And at this point His disciplescame, and they marveled that Hetalked with a woman; yet no onesaid, ‘‘What do You seek?’’ or, ‘‘Whyare You talking with her?’’28 The woman then left her water-
pot, went her way into the city, andsaid to the men,29 ‘‘Come, see a Man who told me
all things that I ever did. Could thisbe the Christ?’’ v. 2530 Then they went out of the city
and came to Him.31 In the meantime His disciples
urged Him, saying, ‘‘Rabbi, eat.’’32 But He said to them, ‘‘I have
food to eat of which you do notknow.’’ v. 833 Therefore the disciples said to
one another, ‘‘Has anyone broughtHim anything to eat?’’34 Jesus said to them, ‘‘My food is
to do the will of Him who sent Me,and to finish His work. 6:3835 ‘‘Do you not say, ‘There are still
four months and then comes theharvest’? Behold, I say to you, liftup your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for har-vest! Matt. 9:37, 3836 ‘‘And he who reaps receives
wages, and gathers fruit for eternallife, that both he who sows and hewho reaps may rejoice together.37 ‘‘For in this the saying is true:
‘One sows and another reaps.’38 ‘‘I sent you to reap that for
which you have not labored; othershave labored, and you have enteredinto their labors.’’39 And many of the Samaritans
of that city believed in Him becauseof the word of the woman who testi-fied, ‘‘He told me all that I ever did.’’40 So when the Samaritans had
come to Him, they urged Him tostay with them; and He stayed theretwo days.41 And many more believed be-
cause of His own word. Luke 4:3242 Then they said to the woman,
‘‘Now we believe, not because ofwhat you said, for we ourselveshave heard Him and we know thatthis is indeed the Christ,a the Saviorof the world.’’ 1 John 4:14
43 Now after the two days He de-parted from there and went to Gal-ilee.44 For Jesus Himself testified that
a prophet has no honor in his owncountry. Matt. 13:5745 So when He came to Galilee,
the Galileans received Him, havingseen all the things He did in Jerusa-lem at the feast; for they also hadgone to the feast. 2:13, 23; 3:246 So Jesus came again to Cana
of Galilee where He had made thewater wine. And there was a certainnobleman whose son was sick atCapernaum. 2:1–1147 When he heard that Jesus had
come out of Judea into Galilee, hewent to Him and implored Him tocome down and heal his son, for hewas at the point of death.48 Then Jesus said to him, ‘‘Un-
less you people see signs and won-ders, you will by no means believe.’’49 The nobleman said to Him,
‘‘Sir, come down before my childdies!’’50 Jesus said to him, ‘‘Go your
way; your son lives.’’ So the manbelieved the word that Jesus spoketo him, and he went his way.51 And as he was now going
down, his servants met him and toldhim, saying, ‘‘Your son lives!’’52 Then he inquired of them the
hour when he got better. And theysaid to him, ‘‘Yesterday at the sev-enth hour the fever left him.’’53 So the father knew that it was
at the same hour in which Jesus saidto him, ‘‘Your son lives.’’ And hehimself believed, and his wholehousehold. Matt. 9:5–1354 This again is the second sign
Jesus did when He had come out ofJudea into Galilee. 2:11
5After this there was a feast ofthe Jews, and Jesus went up to
Jerusalem. 2:13; Deut. 16:162 Now there is in Jerusalem by

3 In these lay a great multitude ofsick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water.4 For an angel went down at a
certain time into the pool andstirred up the water; then whoeverstepped in first, after the stirring ofthe water, was made well of what-ever disease he had.a v. 75 Now a certain man was there
who had an infirmity thirty-eightyears.6 When Jesus saw him lying
there, and knew that he already hadbeen in that condition a long time,He said to him, ‘‘Do you want to bemade well?’’7 The sick man answered Him,
‘‘Sir, I have no man to put me intothe pool when the water is stirredup; but while I am coming, anothersteps down before me.’’ vv. 3, 48 Jesus said to him, ‘‘Rise, take
up your bed and walk.’’ Matt. 9:69 And immediately the man was
made well, took up his bed, andwalked. And that day was the Sab-bath. 9:1410 The Jews therefore said to him
who was cured, ‘‘It is the Sabbath;it is not lawful for you to carry yourbed.’’ 9:16; Matt. 12:1011 He answered them, ‘‘He who
made me well said to me, ‘Take upyour bed and walk.’ ’’12 Then they asked him, ‘‘Who is

the temple, and said to him, ‘‘See,you have been made well. Sin nomore, lest a worse thing come uponyou.’’ 8:1115 The man departed and told the
Jews that it was Jesus who hadmade him well.16 For this reason the Jews perse-
cuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him,a
because He had done these thingson the Sabbath. 8:37; 10:3917 But Jesus answered them, ‘‘My
Father has been working until now,and I have been working.’’ 9:418 Therefore the Jews sought all
the more to kill Him, because Henot only broke the Sabbath, but alsosaid that God was His Father, mak-ing Himself equal with God. 10:3019 Then Jesus answered and said
to them, ‘‘Most assuredly, I say toyou, the Son can do nothing of Him-self, but what He sees the Father do;for whatever He does, the Son alsodoes in like manner. v. 30; 6:3820 ‘‘For the Father loves the Son,

mountain, and there He sat with Hisdisciples.4 Now the Passover, a feast of the
Jews, was near. Lev. 23:55 Then Jesus lifted up His eyes,
and seeing a great multitude com-ing toward Him, He said to Philip,‘‘Where shall we buy bread, thatthese may eat?’’ Matt. 14:14–216 But this He said to test him, for
He Himself knew what He woulddo.7 Philip answered Him, ‘‘Two
hundred denarii worth of bread isnot sufficient for them, that everyone of them may have a little.’’8 One of His disciples, Andrew,
Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him,9 ‘‘There is a lad here who has

had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, ‘‘This is truly the Prophet whois to come into the world.’’ 1:2115 Therefore when Jesus per-

disciples went down to the sea,17 got into the boat, and went over
the sea toward Capernaum. And itwas already dark, and Jesus had notcome to them. Matt. 14:22–3418 Then the sea arose because a
great wind was blowing.19 So when they had rowed about
three or four miles,a they saw Jesuswalking on the sea and drawingnear the boat; and they were afraid.20 But He said to them, ‘‘It is I; do
not be afraid.’’ Is. 43:1, 221 Then they willingly received
Him into the boat, and immediatelythe boat was at the land where theywere going.22 On the following day, when the
people who were standing on theother side of the sea saw that therewas no other boat there, except thatone which His disciples had en-tered,a and that Jesus had not en-tered the boat with His disciples, butHis disciples had gone awayalone—23 however, other boats came
from Tiberias, near the place wherethey ate bread after the Lord hadgiven thanks—24 when the people therefore saw
that Jesus was not there, nor Hisdisciples, they also got into boatsand came to Capernaum, seekingJesus. Mark 1:37; Luke 4:4225 And when they found Him on
the other side of the sea, they saidto Him, ‘‘Rabbi, when did You comehere?’’26 Jesus answered them and said,

shall we do, that we may work theworks of God?’’29 Jesus answered and said to
them, ‘‘This is the work of God, thatyou believe in Him whom He sent.’’30 Therefore they said to Him,
‘‘What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You?What work will You do? Matt. 12:3831 ‘‘Our fathers ate the manna in

who comes down from heaven andgives life to the world.’’34 Then they said to Him, ‘‘Lord,

7After these things Jesus walkedin Galilee; for He did not want to
walk in Judea, because the Jewsa
sought to kill Him. vv. 19, 25; 5:182 Now the Jews’ Feast of Taber-

Him, ‘‘Depart from here and go intoJudea, that Your disciples also maysee the works that You are doing.4 ‘‘For no one does anything in
secret while he himself seeks to beknown openly. If You do thesethings, show Yourself to the world.’’5 For even His brothers did not
believe in Him. Ps. 69:86 Then Jesus said to them, ‘‘My

but it hates Me because I testify ofit that its works are evil. 15:198 ‘‘You go up to this feast. I am

to them, He remained in Galilee.10 But when His brothers had
gone up, then He also went up tothe feast, not openly, but as it werein secret.11 Then the Jews sought Him at
the feast, and said, ‘‘Where is He?’’12 And there was much complain-
ing among the people concerningHim. Some said, ‘‘He is good’’;others said, ‘‘No, on the contrary,He deceives the people.’’ 9:16; 10:1913 However, no one spoke openly
of Him for fear of the Jews. 9:2214 Now about the middle of the
feast Jesus went up into the templeand taught. Mark 6:3415 And the Jews marveled, say-
ing, ‘‘How does this Man know let-ters, having never studied?’’16 Jesusa answered them and
said, ‘‘My doctrine is not Mine, butHis who sent Me. 3:1117 ‘‘If anyone wills to do His will,
he shall know concerning the doc-trine, whether it is from God orwhether I speak on My own au-thority.18 ‘‘He who speaks from himself

law, yet none of you keeps the law?Why do you seek to kill Me?’’20 The people answered and said,
‘‘You have a demon. Who is seekingto kill You?’’ 8:48, 5221 Jesus answered and said to
them, ‘‘I did one work, and you allmarvel.22 ‘‘Moses therefore gave you cir-

I am the light of the world.’’ 8:126 When He had said these
things, He spat on the ground andmade clay with the saliva; and Heanointed the eyes of the blind manwith the clay. Mark 7:33; 8:237 And He said to him, ‘‘Go, wash
in the pool of Siloam’’ (which istranslated, Sent). So he went andwashed, and came back seeing.8 Therefore the neighbors and
those who previously had seen thathe was blinda said, ‘‘Is not this hewho sat and begged?’’9 Some said, ‘‘This is he.’’ Others
said, ‘‘He is like him.’’a He said, ‘‘Iam he.’’10 Therefore they said to him,
‘‘How were your eyes opened?’’11 He answered and said, ‘‘A Man
called Jesus made clay andanointed my eyes and said to me,‘Go to the pool of a Siloam andwash.’ So I went and washed, and Ireceived sight.’’ vv. 6, 712 Then they said to him, ‘‘Where
is He?’’ He said, ‘‘I do not know.’’13 They brought him who for-
merly was blind to the Pharisees.14 Now it was a Sabbath when
Jesus made the clay and opened hiseyes. 5:9, 10, 1615 Then the Pharisees also asked
him again how he had received hissight. He said to them, ‘‘He put clayon my eyes, and I washed, and Isee.’’ vv. 6, 716 Therefore some of the Phari-
sees said, ‘‘This Man is not fromGod, because He does not keep theSabbath.’’ Others said, ‘‘How can aman who is a sinner do such signs?’’And there was a division amongthem. v. 33; 3:2; 7:12, 43; 10:1917 They said to the blind man
again, ‘‘What do you say about Himbecause He opened your eyes?’’ Hesaid, ‘‘He is a prophet.’’ 4:19; 6:14
18 But the Jews did not believeconcerning him, that he had beenblind and received his sight, untilthey called the parents of him whohad received his sight.19 And they asked them, saying,
‘‘Is this your son, who you say wasborn blind? How then does he nowsee?’’20 His parents answered them
and said, ‘‘We know that this is ourson, and that he was born blind;21 ‘‘but by what means he now
sees we do not know, or whoopened his eyes we do not know. Heis of age; ask him. He will speak forhimself.’’22 His parents said these things
because they feared the Jews, forthe Jews had agreed already that ifanyone confessed that He wasChrist, he would be put out of thesynagogue. v. 34; 7:13; 16:223 Therefore his parents said, ‘‘He
is of age; ask him.’’24 So they again called the man
who was blind, and said to him,‘‘Give God the glory! We know thatthis Man is a sinner.’’ v. 16; Josh. 7:1925 He answered and said,
‘‘Whether He is a sinner or not I donot know. One thing I know: thatthough I was blind, now I see.’’26 Then they said to him again,
‘‘What did He do to you? How didHe open your eyes?’’27 He answered them, ‘‘I told you
already, and you did not listen. Whydo you want to hear it again? Doyou also want to become His disci-ples?’’ v. 1128 Then they reviled him and said,
‘‘You are His disciple, but we areMoses’ disciples.29 ‘‘We know that God spoke to
Moses; as for this fellow, we do notknow where He is from.’’ 7:2730 The man answered and said to
them, ‘‘Why, this is a marvelousthing, that you do not know whereHe is from; yet He has opened myeyes! 3:10

been unheard of that anyoneopened the eyes of one who wasborn blind.33 ‘‘If this Man were not from
God, He could do nothing.’’ v. 16; 3:234 They answered and said to
him, ‘‘You were completely born insins, and are you teaching us?’’ Andthey cast him out. v. 2; Ps. 51:535 Jesus heard that they had cast
him out; and when He had foundhim, He said to him, ‘‘Do you be-lieve in the Son of God?’’a 1:7; 10:3636 He answered and said, ‘‘Who
is He, Lord, that I may believe inHim?’’37 And Jesus said to him, ‘‘You

they did not understand the thingswhich He spoke to them.7 Then Jesus said to them again,
‘‘Most assuredly, I say to you, I amthe door of the sheep. v. 18 ‘‘All who ever came before Mea

20 And many of them said, ‘‘Hehas a demon and is mad. Why doyou listen to Him?’’ 7:2021 Others said, ‘‘These are not the
words of one who has a demon. Cana demon open the eyes of theblind?’’ 9:6, 7; Ex. 4:1122 Now it was the Feast of Dedica-
tion in Jerusalem, and it was winter.23 And Jesus walked in the tem-
ple, in Solomon’s porch. Acts 3:1124 Then the Jews surrounded
Him and said to Him, ‘‘How long doYou keep us in doubt? If You are theChrist, tell us plainly.’’25 Jesus answered them, ‘‘I told
you, and you do not believe. Theworks that I do in My Father’s name, they bear witness of Me. v. 3826 ‘‘But you do not believe, be-

again to stone Him. 8:5932 Jesus answered them, ‘‘Many
good works I have shown you fromMy Father. For which of thoseworks do you stone Me?’’33 The Jews answered Him, say-
ing, ‘‘For a good work we do notstone You, but for blasphemy, andbecause You, being a Man, makeYourself God.’’ 5:18; Matt. 9:334 Jesus answered them, ‘‘Is it not

11Now a certain man was sick,Lazarus of Bethany, the town

Him, saying, ‘‘Lord, behold, hewhom You love is sick.’’4 When Jesus heard that, He
said, ‘‘This sickness is not untodeath, but for the glory of God, thatthe Son of God may be glorifiedthrough it.’’ vv. 11, 145 Now Jesus loved Martha and
her sister and Lazarus.6 So, when He heard that he was
sick, He stayed two more days inthe place where He was. 10:407 Then after this He said to the
disciples, ‘‘Let us go to Judeaagain.’’8 The disciples said to Him,

that He said to them, ‘‘Our friendLazarus sleeps, but I go that I maywake him up.’’ Matt. 9:24; Acts 7:6012 Then His disciples said, ‘‘Lord,
if he sleeps he will get well.’’13 However, Jesus spoke of his
death, but they thought that He wasspeaking about taking rest in sleep.14 Then Jesus said to them
plainly, ‘‘Lazarus is dead. vv. 4, 1115 ‘‘And I am glad for your sakes
that I was not there, that you maybelieve. Nevertheless let us go tohim.’’16 Then Thomas, who is called
the Twin, said to his fellow disciples,‘‘Let us also go, that we may diewith Him.’’ 14:5; 20:24–2917 So when Jesus came, He found
that he had already been in thetomb four days.18 Now Bethany was near Jerusa-
lem, about two milesa away.19 And many of the Jews had
joined the women around Marthaand Mary, to comfort them concern-ing their brother.20 Then Martha, as soon as she
heard that Jesus was coming, wentand met Him, but Mary was sittingin the house.21 Now Martha said to Jesus,
‘‘Lord, if You had been here, mybrother would not have died.22 ‘‘But even now I know that
whatever You ask of God, God willgive You.’’ v. 44; 9:3123 Jesus said to her, ‘‘Your brother
will rise again.’’24 Martha said to Him, ‘‘I know
that he will rise again in the resur-rection at the last day.’’ 5:29; Dan. 12:225 Jesus said to her, ‘‘I am the res-
urrection and the life. He who be-lieves in Me, though he may die, heshall live. 5:21; 6:39, 40, 4426 ‘‘And whoever lives and be-
lieves in Me shall never die. Do youbelieve this?’’ 3:14–16; 5:2427 She said to Him, ‘‘Yes, Lord, I
believe that You are the Christ, theSon of God, who is to come into theworld.’’ 1:41, 49; 4:25, 26; 6:6928 And when she had said these
things, she went her way and se-cretly called Mary her sister, saying,
‘‘The Teacher has come and is call-ing for you.’’29 As soon as she heard that, she
arose quickly and came to Him.30 Now Jesus had not yet come
into the town, but wasa in the placewhere Martha met Him.31 Then the Jews who were with
her in the house, and comfortingher, when they saw that Mary roseup quickly and went out, followedher, saying, ‘‘She is going to thetomb to weep there.’’a vv. 19, 3332 Then, when Mary came where
Jesus was, and saw Him, she felldown at His feet, saying to Him,‘‘Lord, if You had been here, mybrother would not have died.’’ v. 2133 Therefore, when Jesus saw her
weeping, and the Jews who camewith her weeping, He groaned in thespirit and was troubled. Matt. 26:3834 And He said, ‘‘Where have you
laid him?’’ They said to Him, ‘‘Lord, come and see.’’35 Jesus wept. Luke 19:4136 Then the Jews said, ‘‘See how
He loved him!’’ v. 537 And some of them said, ‘‘Could
not this Man, who opened the eyesof the blind, also have kept this manfrom dying?’’ 9:6, 738 Then Jesus, again groaning in
Himself, came to the tomb. It was acave, and a stone lay against it. v. 3339 Jesus said, ‘‘Take away the
stone.’’ Martha, the sister of himwho was dead, said to Him, ‘‘Lord,by this time there is a stench, for hehas been dead four days.’’40 Jesus said to her, ‘‘Did I not say
to you that if you would believe youwould see the glory of God?’’ v. 2641 Then they took away the stone
from the place where the dead manwas lying.a And Jesus lifted up Hiseyes and said, ‘‘Father, I thank Youthat You have heard Me. Matt. 11:2542 ‘‘And I know that You always

who are standing by I said this, thatthey may believe that You sent Me.’’43 Now when He had said these
things, He cried with a loud voice,‘‘Lazarus, come forth!’’ 5:28, 2944 And he who had died came out
bound hand and foot with grave-clothes, and his face was wrappedwith a cloth. Jesus said to them,‘‘Loose him, and let him go.’’ 19:4045 Then many of the Jews who
had come to Mary, and had seen thethings Jesus did, believed in Him.46 But some of them went away
to the Pharisees and told them thethings Jesus did. 5:1547 Then the chief priests and the
Pharisees gathered a council andsaid, ‘‘What shall we do? For thisMan works many signs. 3:2; Ps. 2:248 ‘‘If we let Him alone like this,
everyone will believe in Him, andthe Romans will come and takeaway both our place and nation.’’49 And one of them, Caiaphas, be-
ing high priest that year, said tothem, ‘‘You know nothing at all,50 ‘‘nor do you consider that it is
expedient for usa that one manshould die for the people, and notthat the whole nation should per-ish.’’ 18:1451 Now this he did not say on his
own authority; but being high priestthat year he prophesied that Jesuswould die for the nation, Matt. 1:2152 and not for that nation only,
but also that He would gather to-gether in one the children of Godwho were scattered abroad. 10:1653 Then, from that day on, they
plotted to put Him to death. Matt. 26:454 Therefore Jesus no longer
walked openly among the Jews, butwent from there into the countrynear the wilderness, to a city calledEphraim, and there remained withHis disciples. 4:1, 3; 7:155 And the Passover of the Jews
was near, and many went from thecountry up to Jerusalem before thePassover, to purify themselves.56 Then they sought Jesus, and
spoke among themselves as theystood in the temple, ‘‘What do you
think—that He will not come to thefeast?’’ 7:1157 Now both the chief priests and
the Pharisees had given a com-mand, that if anyone knew whereHe was, he should report it, thatthey might seize Him. Matt. 26:14–16
12Then, six days before thePassover, Jesus came to Beth-
any, where Lazarus was who hadbeen dead,a whom He had raisedfrom the dead. 11:1, 43, 442 There they made Him a supper;
and Martha served, but Lazaruswas one of those who sat at the tablewith Him. Mark 14:3; Luke 10:38–413 Then Mary took a pound of
very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, andwiped His feet with her hair. Andthe house was filled with the fra-grance of the oil. 11:2; Matt. 26:74 But one of His disciples, Judas
Iscariot, Simon’s son, who wouldbetray Him, said, 13:265 ‘‘Why was this fragrant oil not
sold for three hundred denariia andgiven to the poor?’’6 This he said, not that he cared
for the poor, but because he was athief, and had the money box; andhe used to take what was put in it.7 But Jesus said, ‘‘Let her alone;
she has kepta this for the day of Myburial. 19:39, 408 ‘‘For the poor you have with
you always, but Me you do not havealways.’’ Mark 14:79 Now a great many of the Jews
knew that He was there; and theycame, not for Jesus’ sake only, butthat they might also see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead.10 But the chief priests plotted to
put Lazarus to death also, Luke 16:3111 because on account of him
many of the Jews went away andbelieved in Jesus. v. 18; 11:4512 The next day a great multitude

13 took branches of palm treesand went out to meet Him, and criedout: Ps. 118:26

14 Then Jesus, when He hadfound a young donkey, sat on it; asit is written: Zech. 9:9
15‘‘Fear not, daughter of Zion;Behold, your King is coming,Sitting on a donkey’s colt.’’ a
16 His disciples did not under-stand these things at first; but whenJesus was glorified, then they re-membered that these things werewritten about Him and that theyhad done these things to Him. 14:2617 Therefore the people, who
were with Him when He called Laz-arus out of his tomb and raised himfrom the dead, bore witness.18 For this reason the people also
met Him, because they heard thatHe had done this sign. v. 1119 The Pharisees therefore said
among themselves, ‘‘You see thatyou are accomplishing nothing.Look, the world has gone afterHim!’’ 11:53, 5720 Now there were certain Greeks
among those who came up to wor-ship at the feast.21 Then they came to Philip, who
was from Bethsaida of Galilee, andasked him, saying, ‘‘Sir, we wish tosee Jesus.’’ 1:43; 14:822 Philip came and told Andrew,
and in turn Andrew and Philip toldJesus. 1:40–4223 But Jesus answered them, say-
ing, ‘‘The hour has come that theSon of Man should be glorified. 8:2024 ‘‘Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless a grain of wheat falls into theground and dies, it remains alone;but if it dies, it produces much grain.25 ‘‘He who loves his life will lose
it, and he who hates his life in thisworld will keep it for eternal life.26 ‘‘If anyone serves Me, let him

what shall I say? ‘Father, save Mefrom this hour’? But for this purposeI came to this hour. 11:3328 ‘‘Father, glorify Your name.’’
Then a voice came from heaven, saying, ‘‘I have both glorified it andwill glorify it again.’’ Matt. 3:1729 Therefore the people who
stood by and heard it said that ithad thundered. Others said, ‘‘An an-gel has spoken to Him.’’30 Jesus answered and said, ‘‘This
voice did not come because of Me,but for your sake. 11:4231 ‘‘Now is the judgment of this

the earth, will draw all peoples toMyself.’’ 3:14; 8:28; Rom. 5:1833 This He said, signifying by
what death He would die. 18:3234 The people answered Him,
‘‘We have heard from the law thatthe Christ remains forever; and howcan You say, ‘The Son of Man mustbe lifted up’? Who is this Son ofMan?’’ v. 32; 3:14; 8:2835 Then Jesus said to them, ‘‘A lit-

And to whom has the arm ofthe LORD been revealed?’’ a
39 Therefore they could not be-lieve, because Isaiah said again:
40‘‘He has blinded their eyes andhardened their hearts,
Lest they should see withtheir eyes, Is. 6:10
Lest they should understandwith their hearts and turn,
So that I should heal them.’’ a
41 These things Isaiah said whena
he saw His glory and spoke of Him.42 Nevertheless even among the
rulers many believed in Him, but be-cause of the Pharisees they did notconfess Him, lest they should be putout of the synagogue; 7:13; 9:2243 for they loved the praise of men
more than the praise of God. 5:4144 Then Jesus cried out and said,
‘‘He who believes in Me, believesnot in Me but in Him who sent Me.45 ‘‘And he who sees Me sees Him
who sent Me. 14:946 ‘‘I have come as a light into the
world, that whoever believes in Meshould not abide in darkness. 8:1247 ‘‘And if anyone hears My
words and does not believe,a I donot judge him; for I did not cometo judge the world but to save theworld. 3:1748 ‘‘He who rejects Me, and does

mand is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Fatherhas told Me, so I speak.’’ 5:19; 8:28
13Now before the Feast of thePassover, when Jesus knew
that His hour had come that Heshould depart from this world to theFather, having loved His own who
were in the world, He loved them tothe end. v. 23; 15:9; 17:12 And supper being ended,a the
devil having already put it into theheart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son,to betray Him, Luke 22:33 Jesus, knowing that the Father
had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God andwas going to God, 5:20–23; 17:24 rose from supper and laid aside
His garments, took a towel andgirded Himself. Luke 22:275 After that, He poured water
into a basin and began to wash thedisciples’ feet, and to wipe themwith the towel with which He wasgirded.6 Then He came to Simon Peter.
And Peter said to Him, ‘‘Lord, areYou washing my feet?’’ Matt. 3:147 Jesus answered and said to
him, ‘‘What I am doing you do notunderstand now, but you will knowafter this.’’ v. 19; 12:16; 16:128 Peter said to Him, ‘‘You shall
never wash my feet!’’ Jesus an-swered him, ‘‘If I do not wash you,you have no part with Me.’’ 1 Cor. 6:119 Simon Peter said to Him,
‘‘Lord, not my feet only, but also myhands and my head!’’10 Jesus said to him, ‘‘He who is
bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you areclean, but not all of you.’’ 15:311 For He knew who would betray
Him; therefore He said, ‘‘You arenot all clean.’’ vv. 2, 3012 So when He had washed their
feet, taken His garments, and satdown again, He said to them, ‘‘Doyou know what I have done to you?13 ‘‘You call Me Teacher and

things, He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, ‘‘Most as-suredly, I say to you, one of you willbetray Me.’’ 12:27; Luke 22:2122 Then the disciples looked at
one another, perplexed aboutwhom He spoke. 19:26; 20:223 Now there was leaning on
Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved.24 Simon Peter therefore mo-

breast, he said to Him, ‘‘Lord, whois it?’’26 Jesus answered, ‘‘It is he to
whom I shall give a piece of breadwhen I have dipped it.’’ And havingdipped the bread, He gave it to Ju-das Iscariot, the son of Simon. 6:7027 Now after the piece of bread,
Satan entered him. Then Jesus saidto him, ‘‘What you do, do quickly.’’28 But no one at the table knew
for what reason He said this to him.29 For some thought, because Ju-

18When Jesus had spoken thesewords, He went out with His
disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, whichHe and His disciples entered.2 And Judas, who betrayed Him,
also knew the place; for Jesus oftenmet there with His disciples. 13:303 Then Judas, having received a
detachment of troops, and officersfrom the chief priests and Phari-sees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. Luke 22:47–534 Jesus therefore, knowing all
things that would come upon Him,went forward and said to them,‘‘Whom are you seeking?’’ 6:645 They answered Him, ‘‘Jesus of
Nazareth.’’ Jesus said to them, ‘‘I amHe.’’ And Judas, who betrayed Him,also stood with them. 13:306 Now when He said to them, ‘‘I
am He,’’ they drew back and fell tothe ground. Ex. 3:147 Then He asked them again,
‘‘Whom are you seeking?’’ And theysaid, ‘‘Jesus of Nazareth.’’ vv. 4, 58 Jesus answered, ‘‘I have told
you that I am He. Therefore, if youseek Me, let these go their way,’’9 that the saying might be ful-
filled which He spoke, ‘‘Of thosewhom You gave Me I have lostnone.’’ 17:1210 Then Simon Peter, having a
sword, drew it and struck the highpriest’s servant, and cut off his rightear. The servant’s name was Mal-chus. Luke 22:50, 5111 So Jesus said to Peter, ‘‘Put
your sword into the sheath. Shall Inot drink the cup which My Fatherhas given Me?’’ Luke 22:4212 Then the detachment of troops
and the captain and the officers ofthe Jews arrested Jesus and boundHim.13 And they led Him away to An-
nas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was highpriest that year. Luke 3:214 Now it was Caiaphas who ad-
vised the Jews that it was expedientthat one man should die for the peo-ple. 11:5015 And Simon Peter followed
Jesus, and so did anothera disciple. Now that disciple was known to thehigh priest, and went with Jesusinto the courtyard of the high priest.16 But Peter stood at the door out-
side. Then the other disciple, whowas known to the high priest, wentout and spoke to her who kept thedoor, and brought Peter in.17 Then the servant girl who kept
the door said to Peter, ‘‘You are notalso one of this Man’s disciples, areyou?’’ He said, ‘‘I am not.’’18 Now the servants and officers
who had made a fire of coals stoodthere, for it was cold, and theywarmed themselves. And Peterstood with them and warmed him-self.19 The high priest then asked
Jesus about His disciples and Hisdoctrine. v. 1320 Jesus answered him, ‘‘I spoke

spoken evil, bear witness of the evil;but if well, why do you strike Me?’’24 Then Annas sent Him bound to
Caiaphas the high priest. v. 1325 Now Simon Peter stood and
warmed himself. Therefore theysaid to him, ‘‘You are not also one ofHis disciples, are you?’’ He denied itand said, ‘‘I am not!’’26 One of the servants of the high
priest, a relative of him whose earPeter cut off, said, ‘‘Did I not see youin the garden with Him?’’27 Peter then denied again; and
immediately a rooster crowed. 13:3828 Then they led Jesus from Caia-
phas to the Praetorium, and it wasearly morning. But they themselvesdid not go into the Praetorium, lestthey should be defiled, but that theymight eat the Passover. Mark 15:129 Pilate then went out to them
and said, ‘‘What accusation do youbring against this Man?’’ Mark 15:2–530 They answered and said to
him, ‘‘If He were not an evildoer, wewould not have delivered Him up toyou.’’31 Then Pilate said to them, ‘‘You
take Him and judge Him accordingto your law.’’ Therefore the Jewssaid to him, ‘‘It is not lawful for usto put anyone to death,’’32 that the saying of Jesus might
be fulfilled which He spoke, signify-ing by what death He would die.33 Then Pilate entered the Praeto-
rium again, called Jesus, and saidto Him, ‘‘Are You the King of theJews?’’ 19:19; Matt. 2:234 Jesus answered him, ‘‘Are you
speaking for yourself about this, ordid others tell you this concerningMe?’’35 Pilate answered, ‘‘Am I a Jew?
Your own nation and the chiefpriests have delivered You to me.What have You done?’’ v. 28; 11:5036 Jesus answered, ‘‘My kingdom
is not of this world. If My kingdomwere of this world, My servantswould fight, so that I should not bedelivered to the Jews; but now Mykingdom is not from here.’’ Dan. 2:4437 Pilate therefore said to Him,
‘‘Are You a king then?’’ Jesus an-
swered, ‘‘You say rightly that I am aking. For this cause I was born, andfor this cause I have come into theworld, that I should bear witness tothe truth. Everyone who is of thetruth hears My voice.’’ 10:2738 Pilate said to Him, ‘‘What is
truth?’’ And when he had said this,he went out again to the Jews, andsaid to them, ‘‘I find no fault in Himat all. 19:4, 639 ‘‘But you have a custom that I
should release someone to you atthe Passover. Do you therefore wantme to release to you the King of theJews?’’ v. 33; 19:19; Matt. 2:240 Then they all cried again, say-
ing, ‘‘Not this Man, but Barabbas!’’Now Barabbas was a robber.
19So then Pilate took Jesus andscourged Him. Matt. 27:26
2 And the soldiers twisted acrown of thorns and put it on Hishead, and they put on Him a purplerobe.3 Then they said,a ‘‘Hail, King of
the Jews!’’ And they struck Himwith their hands. v. 19; 18:334 Pilate then went out again, and
said to them, ‘‘Behold, I am bringingHim out to you, that you may knowthat I find no fault in Him.’’ 18:385 Then Jesus came out, wearing
the crown of thorns and the purplerobe. And Pilate said to them, ‘‘Be-hold the Man!’’6 Therefore, when the chief
priests and officers saw Him, theycried out, saying, ‘‘Crucify Him, cru-cify Him!’’ Pilate said to them, ‘‘Youtake Him and crucify Him, for I findno fault in Him.’’ v. 4; 18:387 The Jews answered him, ‘‘We
have a law, and according to oura
law He ought to die, because Hemade Himself the Son of God.’’ 5:188 Therefore, when Pilate heard
that saying, he was the more afraid,9 and went again into the Praeto-

release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, ‘‘If you let this Man go, youare not Caesar’s friend. Whoevermakes himself a king speaksagainst Caesar.’’ Luke 23:213 When Pilate therefore heard
that saying, he brought Jesus outand sat down in the judgment seatin a place that is called The Pave-ment, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.14 Now it was the Preparation
Day of the Passover, and about thesixth hour. And he said to the Jews,‘‘Behold your King!’’ Matt. 27:6215 But they cried out, ‘‘Away with
Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!’’Pilate said to them, ‘‘Shall I crucifyyour King?’’ The chief priests an-swered, ‘‘We have no king but Cae-sar!’’ 18:3316 Then he delivered Him to them
to be crucified. So they took Jesusand led Him away.a Luke 23:2417 And He, bearing His cross,
went out to a place called the Placeof a Skull, which is called in He-brew, Golgotha, Luke 23:3318 where they crucified Him, and
two others with Him, one on eitherside, and Jesus in the center. Is. 53:1219 Now Pilate wrote a title and put
it on the cross. And the writing was:
JESUS OF NAZARETH,THE KING OF THE JEWS.
20 Then many of the Jews readthis title, for the place where Jesuswas crucified was near the city; andit was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.21 Therefore the chief priests of
the Jews said to Pilate, ‘‘Do notwrite, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but,‘He said, ‘‘I am the King of theJews.’’ ’ ’’
22 Pilate answered, ‘‘What I havewritten, I have written.’’23 Then the soldiers, when they
had crucified Jesus, took His gar-ments and made four parts, to eachsoldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece.24 They said therefore among
themselves, ‘‘Let us not tear it, butcast lots for it, whose it shall be,’’that the Scripture might be fulfilledwhich says: Ps. 22:18
‘‘They divided My garmentsamong them,
And for My clothing they castlots.’’ a
Therefore the soldiers did thesethings.25 Now there stood by the cross of
Jesus His mother, and His mother’ssister, Mary the wife of Clopas, andMary Magdalene. Mark 15:4026 When Jesus therefore saw His
mother, and the disciple whom Heloved standing by, He said to Hismother, ‘‘Woman, behold yourson!’’27 Then He said to the disciple,
‘‘Behold your mother!’’ And fromthat hour that disciple took her tohis own home. 7:528 After this, Jesus, knowinga that
all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, ‘‘I thirst!’’ Ps. 22:1529 Now a vessel full of sour wine
was sitting there; and they filled asponge with sour wine, put it onhyssop, and put it to His mouth.30 So when Jesus had received
the sour wine, He said, ‘‘It is fin-ished!’’ And bowing His head, Hegave up His spirit. 17:431 Therefore, because it was the
Preparation Day, that the bodiesshould not remain on the cross onthe Sabbath (for that Sabbath wasa high day), the Jews asked Pilatethat their legs might be broken, andthat they might be taken away.

1249 JOHN 20:17
32 Then the soldiers came andbroke the legs of the first and of theother who was crucified with Him.33 But when they came to Jesus
and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.34 But one of the soldiers pierced
His side with a spear, and immedi-ately blood and water came out.35 And he who has seen has testi-
fied, and his testimony is true; andhe knows that he is telling the truth,so that you may believe. 20:3136 For these things were done that
the Scripture should be fulfilled,‘‘Not one of His bones shall be bro-ken.’’ a Ex. 12:46; Num. 9:1237 And again another Scripture
says, ‘‘They shall look on Himwhom they pierced.’’ a Zech. 12:1038 After this, Joseph of Arima-
thea, being a disciple of Jesus, butsecretly, for fear of the Jews, askedPilate that he might take away thebody of Jesus; and Pilate gave himpermission. So he came and tookthe body of Jesus. Matt. 27:57–6139 And Nicodemus, who at first
came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and al-oes, about a hundred pounds. 3:140 Then they took the body of
Jesus, and bound it in strips of linenwith the spices, as the custom of theJews is to bury. 20:5–741 Now in the place where He was
crucified there was a garden, and inthe garden a new tomb in which noone had yet been laid.42 So there they laid Jesus, be-
cause of the Jews’ Preparation Day,for the tomb was nearby. vv. 14, 31
20Now on the first day of theweek Mary Magdalene went
to the tomb early, while it was stilldark, and saw that the stone hadbeen taken away from the tomb.2 Then she ran and came to Si-
mon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said tothem, ‘‘They have taken away theLord out of the tomb, and we do notknow where they have laid Him.’’3 Peter therefore went out, and
the other disciple, and were goingto the tomb. Luke 24:12
4 So they both ran together, andthe other disciple outran Peter andcame to the tomb first.5 And he, stooping down and
looking in, saw the linen cloths ly-ing there; yet he did not go in. 19:406 Then Simon Peter came, fol-
lowing him, and went into the tomb;and he saw the linen cloths lyingthere,7 and the handkerchief that had
been around His head, not lyingwith the linen cloths, but folded to-gether in a place by itself. 11:448 Then the other disciple, who
came to the tomb first, went in also;and he saw and believed. v. 299 For as yet they did not know
the Scripture, that He must riseagain from the dead. Ps. 16:1010 Then the disciples went away
again to their own homes.11 But Mary stood outside by the
tomb weeping, and as she weptshe stooped down and looked intothe tomb. Mark 16:512 And she saw two angels in
white sitting, one at the head andthe other at the feet, where the bodyof Jesus had lain.13 Then they said to her, ‘‘Woman,
why are you weeping?’’ She said tothem, ‘‘Because they have takenaway my Lord, and I do not knowwhere they have laid Him.’’14 Now when she had said this,
she turned around and saw Jesusstanding there, and did not knowthat it was Jesus. 21:4; Matt. 28:915 Jesus said to her, ‘‘Woman,
why are you weeping? Whom areyou seeking?’’ She, supposing Himto be the gardener, said to Him, ‘‘Sir,if You have carried Him away, tellme where You have laid Him, and Iwill take Him away.’’16 Jesus said to her, ‘‘Mary!’’ She
turned and said to Him,a ‘‘Rab-boni!’’ (which is to say, Teacher).17 Jesus said to her, ‘‘Do not cling
to Me, for I have not yet ascendedto My Father; but go to My brethren

and say to them, ‘I am ascendingto My Father and your Father, andto My God and your God.’ ’’ Matt. 28:918 Mary Magdalene came and
told the disciples that she had seenthe Lord,a and that He had spokenthese things to her. Luke 24:10, 2319 Then, the same day at evening,
being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where thedisciples were assembled,a for fearof the Jews, Jesus came and stoodin the midst, and said to them,‘‘Peace be with you.’’ 9:22; 19:3820 When He had said this, He
showed them His hands and Hisside. Then the disciples were gladwhen they saw the Lord. 16:20, 2221 So Jesus said to them again,
‘‘Peace to you! As the Father hassent Me, I also send you.’’ 17:18, 1922 And when He had said this, He
breathed on them, and said to them,‘‘Receive the Holy Spirit.23 ‘‘If you forgive the sins of any,
they are forgiven them; if you retainthe sins of any, they are retained.’’24 Now Thomas, called the Twin,
one of the twelve, was not with themwhen Jesus came. 11:16; 14:525 The other disciples therefore
said to him, ‘‘We have seen theLord.’’ So he said to them, ‘‘UnlessI see in His hands the print of thenails, and put my finger into theprint of the nails, and put my handinto His side, I will not believe.’’26 And after eight days His disci-
ples were again inside, and Thomaswith them. Jesus came, the doorsbeing shut, and stood in the midst, and said, ‘‘Peace to you!’’ v. 1927 Then He said to Thomas,
‘‘Reach your finger here, and lookat My hands; and reach your handhere, and put it into My side. Do notbe unbelieving, but believing.’’28 And Thomas answered and
said to Him, ‘‘My Lord and myGod!’’ 1:1; 10:30; 14:929 Jesus said to him, ‘‘Thomas,a
because you have seen Me, youhave believed. Blessed are thosewho have not seen and yet have be-lieved.’’ v. 8; 1 Pet. 1:830 And truly Jesus did many other
signs in the presence of His disci-ples, which are not written in thisbook; 2:11; 3:2; 21:2531 but these are written that you
may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believingyou may have life in His name. 1:41
21After these things Jesusshowed Himself again to the
disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, andin this way He showed Himself:2 Simon Peter, Thomas called
the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Gal-ilee, the sons of Zebedee, and twoothers of His disciples were to-gether. 1:45–51; 20:24; Matt. 4:213 Simon Peter said to them, ‘‘I
am going fishing.’’ They said to him,‘‘We are going with you also.’’ Theywent out and immediatelya got intothe boat, and that night they caughtnothing. Matt. 4:18, 194 But when the morning had
now come, Jesus stood on the shore;yet the disciples did not know thatit was Jesus. 20:145 Then Jesus said to them, ‘‘Chil-
dren, have you any food?’’ They an-swered Him, ‘‘No.’’ Luke 24:416 And He said to them, ‘‘Cast the
net on the right side of the boat, andyou will find some.’’ So they cast, and now they were not able to drawit in because of the multitude of fish.7 Therefore that disciple whom
Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘‘It is theLord!’’ Now when Simon Peterheard that it was the Lord, he puton his outer garment (for he hadremoved it), and plunged into thesea. Luke 5:1–118 But the other disciples came in
the little boat (for they were not farfrom land, but about two hundredcubits), dragging the net with fish.9 Then, as soon as they had
come to land, they saw a fire ofcoals there, and fish laid on it, andbread. 18:1810 Jesus said to them, ‘‘Bring

dragged the net to land, full of largefish, one hundred and fifty-three;and although there were so many, the net was not broken.12 Jesus said to them, ‘‘Come and
eat breakfast.’’ Yet none of the disci-ples dared ask Him, ‘‘Who areYou?’’—knowing that it was theLord. v. 413 Jesus then came and took the
bread and gave it to them, and like-wise the fish. 6:1114 This is now the third time Jesus
showed Himself to His disciples af-ter He was raised from the dead.15 So when they had eaten break-
fast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘‘Si-mon, son of Jonah,a do you love Memore than these?’’ He said to Him,‘‘Yes, Lord; You know that I loveYou.’’ He said to him, ‘‘Feed Mylambs.’’ 18:15–18, 25–2716 He said to him again a second
time, ‘‘Simon, son of Jonah,a do youlove Me?’’ He said to Him, ‘‘Yes,Lord; You know that I love You.’’ Hesaid to him, ‘‘Tend My sheep.’’17 He said to him the third time,
‘‘Simon, son of Jonah,a do you loveMe?’’ Peter was grieved because Hesaid to him the third time, ‘‘Do youlove Me?’’ And he said to Him,‘‘Lord, You know all things; Youknow that I love You.’’ Jesus said tohim, ‘‘Feed My sheep. 2:24, 25; 16:3018 ‘‘Most assuredly, I say to you,

THE ACTSof the Apostles
JESUS’ last recorded words on earth are a supplement to the Great Commis-sion: ‘‘You shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and
Samaria, and to the end of the earth’’ (1:8). The Book of Acts, written by Luke,is the story of the men and women who took that commission seriously andbegan to spread the news of a risen Savior to the most remote corners of theknown world.
Each section of the book (1—7; 8—12; 13—28) focuses on a particular
yourself and walked where youwished; but when you are old, youwill stretch out your hands, and an-other will gird you and carry youwhere you do not wish.’’ Acts 12:3, 419 This He spoke, signifying by
what death he would glorify God.And when He had spoken this, Hesaid to him, ‘‘Follow Me.’’ Matt. 4:1920 Then Peter, turning around,
saw the disciple whom Jesus lovedfollowing, who also had leaned onHis breast at the supper, and said,‘‘Lord, who is the one who betraysYou?’’ 13:23–2521 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus,
‘‘But Lord, what about this man?’’22 Jesus said to him, ‘‘If I will that
he remain till I come, what is thatto you? You follow Me.’’ 1 Thess. 4:1623 Then this saying went out
among the brethren that this disci-ple would not die. Yet Jesus did notsay to him that he would not die, but, ‘‘If I will that he remain till Icome, what is that to you?’’ v. 2224 This is the disciple who testi-
fies of these things, and wrote thesethings; and we know that his testi-mony is true. 19:3525 And there are also many other
things that Jesus did, which if theywere written one by one, I supposethat even the world itself could notcontain the books that would bewritten. Amen. 20:30
