    The Gospel According to

JOHNJ UST as a coin has two sides, both valid, so Jesus Christ has two natures, both valid. Luke presents Christ in His humanity as the Son of Man; Johnportrays Him in His deity as the Son of God. Johns purpose is crystal clear: toset forth Christ in His deity in order to spark believing faith in his readers.Johns gospel is topical as well as chronological, and it revolves around sevenmiracles and seven I am statements of Christ.

Following an extended eyewitness description of the Upper Room mealand discourse, John records events leading up to the Resurrection, the finalclimactic proof that Jesus is who He claims to bethe Son of God.

The title of the Fourth Gospel follows the same format as the titles of thesynoptic Gospels: Kata Ioannen, According to John. As with the others, theword Gospel was added later. Ioannes is derived from the Hebrew name Johanan, Yahweh Has Been Gracious.

The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Is. 40:3

Make straight the way of the LORD , a

as the prophet Isaiah said.24 Now those who were sent were

from the Pharisees.25 And they asked him, saying,

Why then do you baptize if you arenot the Christ, nor Elijah, nor theProphet?

26 John answered them, saying,I baptize with water, but therestands One among you whom youdo not know. Luke 3:16

27 It is He who, coming after me,is preferred before me, whose san-dal strap I am not worthy to loose.

28 These things were done inBethabara a beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 4:1

29 The next day John saw Jesuscoming toward him, and said, Be-hold! The Lamb of God who takes

away the sin of the world! 1 Pet. 1:1930 This is He of whom I said, Af- ter me comes a Man who is pre-ferred before me, for He was beforeme. v. 1

31 I did not know Him; but thatHe should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with wa- ter. Mal. 3:1; Matt. 3:6

32 And John bore witness, saying,

I saw the Spirit descending fromheaven like a dove, and He re-mained upon Him. Matt. 3:16

33 I did not know Him, but Hewho sent me to baptize with watersaid to me, Upon whom you see theSpirit descending, and remainingon Him, this is He who baptizeswith the Holy Spirit. Matt. 3:11

34 And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God. 11:27

35 Again, the next day, John stoodwith two of his disciples.

36 And looking at Jesus as Hewalked, he said, Behold the Lambof God! v. 29; 19:36; Ex. 12:46

37 The two disciples heard himspeak, and they followed Jesus.

38 Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them,What do you seek? They said to

Him, Rabbi (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), where areYou staying?

39 He said to them, Come andsee. They came and saw where Hewas staying, and remained withHim that day (now it was about the tenth hour).

40 One of the two who heard Johnspeak, and followed Him, was An-drew, Simon Peters brother.

41 He first found his own brotherSimon, and said to him, We havefound the Messiah (which is trans-lated, the Christ). 4:25; Matt. 4:18, 19

42 And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, Hesaid, You are Simon the son of Jo-nah. a You shall be called Cephas(which is translated, A Stone).

43 The following day Jesuswanted to go to Galilee, and Hefound Philip and said to him, Fol-low Me. 6:5, 7; 12:21, 22; 14:8

44 Now Philip was from Bethsa-ida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

45 Philip found Nathanael andsaid to him, We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wroteJesus of Naza-reth, the son of Joseph.

46 And Nathanael said to him,Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him,Come and see. Matt. 2:23

47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, Be-hold, an Israelite indeed, in whomis no deceit! 1 Pet. 2:1, 22

48 Nathanael said to Him, Howdo You know me? Jesus answeredand said to him, Before Philipcalled you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.

49 Nathanael answered and said to Him, Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!

50 Jesus answered and said tohim, Because I said to you, I sawyou under the fig tree, do you be-lieve? You will see greater things than these. 14:12

51 And He said to him, Most as-suredly, I say to you, hereafter a youshall see heaven open, and the an-gels of God ascending and descend-ing upon the Son of Man. Gen. 28:12

2 On the third day there was awedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.

2 Now both Jesus and His disci-ples were invited to the wedding.

3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him,They have no wine.

4 Jesus said to her, Woman, what does your concern have to dowith Me? My hour has not yetcome. 7:30; 8:20; 12:27; 13:1

5 His mother said to the ser- vants, Whatever He says to you, doit.

6 Now there were set there sixwaterpots of stone, according to themanner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallonsapiece. Mark 7:3

7 Jesus said to them, Fill thewaterpots with water. And theyfilled them up to the brim.

8 And He said to them, Drawsome out now, and take it to themaster of the feast. And they tookit.

9 When the master of the feasthad tasted the water that was madewine, and did not know where it

came from (but the servants whohad drawn the water knew), themaster of the feast called the bride-groom. 4:46

10 And he said to him, Everyman at the beginning sets out thegood wine, and when the guestshave well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine untilnow!

11 This beginning of signs Jesusdid in Cana of Galilee, and mani-fested His glory; and His disciplesbelieved in Him. 1:14; 4:54

12 After this He went down to Ca-pernaum, He, His mother, Hisbrothers, and His disciples; and they did not stay there many days.

13 Now the Passover of the Jewswas at hand, and Jesus went up toJerusalem. Deut. 16:16

14 And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep anddoves, and the money changers do-ing business. Matt. 21:12, 13

15 When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and theoxen, and poured out the changersmoney and overturned the tables.

16 And He said to those who solddoves, Take these things away!Do not make My Fathers house ahouse of merchandise! Luke 2:49

17 Then His disciples remem-bered that it was written, Zeal for Your house has eaten a Me up. b

18 So the Jews answered and said to Him, What sign do You show tous, since You do these things?

19 Jesus answered and said to them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

20 Then the Jews said, It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days? Matt. 26:61

21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body. 20:12, 20

22 Therefore, when He had risenfrom the dead, His disciples remem-bered that He had said this to them; aand they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said.

23 Now when He was in Jerusa-

lem at the Passover, during thefeast, many believed in His namewhen they saw the signs which Hedid. 3:2

24 But Jesus did not commit Him-self to them, because He knew allmen, 21:17; Matt. 9:4

25 and had no need that anyoneshould testify of man, for He knewwhat was in man. 6:64; 16:30

3 There was a man of the Phari-sees named Nicodemus, a rulerof the Jews. 8:50, 51; 19:39422 This man came to Jesus by

signs that You do unless God is withhim. 2:23; 9:16, 33

3 Jesus answered and said tohim, Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannotsee the kingdom of God. 1:12, 13

4 Nicodemus said to Him, Howcan a man be born when he is old?Can he enter a second time into hismothers womb and be born?

5 Jesus answered, Most as-suredly, I say to you, unless one isborn of water and the Spirit, he can-not enter the kingdom of God. 7:38

6 That which is born of the fleshis flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 6:63

7 Do not marvel that I said toyou, You must be born again. v. 3

8 The wind blows where itwishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comesfrom and where it goes. So is every-one who is born of the Spirit. v. 6

    9 Nicodemus answered and said

to Him, How can these things be?10 Jesus answered and said tohim, Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things?

11 Most assuredly, I say to you,We speak what We know and testifywhat We have seen, and you do notreceive Our witness. Matt. 11:27

12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how

will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?13 No one has ascended to

heaven but He who came downfrom heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven. a Eph. 4:9

14 And as Moses lifted up theserpent in the wilderness, even somust the Son of Man be lifted up,

15 that whoever believes in Himshould not perish but a have eternallife. v. 36; 6:47

16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Himshould not perish but have everlast-ing life. 1 John 4:9

17 For God did not send His Soninto the world to condemn theworld, but that the world throughHim might be saved. Luke 9:56

18 He who believes in Him is notcondemned; but he who does notbelieve is condemned already, be-cause he has not believed in thename of the only begotten Son of God. 5:24; 1 John 5:11, 12

19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into theworld, and men loved darknessrather than light, because theirdeeds were evil. 1:4, 911; 8:44

20 For everyone practicing evilhates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should beexposed. Eph. 5:11, 13

21 But he who does the truthcomes to the light, that his deedsmay be clearly seen, that they havebeen done in God. 1 Cor. 15:10

22 After these things Jesus andHis disciples came into the land of Judea, and there He remained with them and baptized. 4:1

23 Now John also was baptizingin Aenon near Salim, because there

was much water there. And theycame and were baptized. Matt. 3:5, 624 For John had not yet been

thrown into prison. Luke 3:19, 2025 Then there arose a dispute be-

tween some of Johns disciples and the Jews about purification.

26 And they came to John andsaid to him, Rabbi, He who waswith you beyond the Jordan, to

whom you have testifiedbehold,He is baptizing, and all are coming to Him! v. 22; 4:1

27 John answered and said, Aman can receive nothing unless ithas been given to him from heaven.

28 You yourselves bear me wit-ness, that I said, I am not theChrist, but, I have been sent beforeHim. 1:20

29 He who has the bride is thebridegroom; but the friend of thebridegroom, who stands and hearshim, rejoices greatly because of thebridegrooms voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled. Rev. 21:9

    1224J OHN 3:31

31 He who comes from above isabove all; he who is of the earth isearthly and speaks of the earth. Hewho comes from heaven is aboveall. v. 13; Matt. 28:18

32 And what He has seen andheard, that He testifies; and no onereceives His testimony.

33 He who has received His testi-mony has certified that God is true.

34 For He whom God has sentspeaks the words of God, for Goddoes not give the Spirit by measure.

35 The Father loves the Son, andhas given all things into His hand.

36 He who believes in the Sonhas everlasting life; and he whodoes not believe the Son shall notsee life, but the wrath of God abideson him. vv. 1618; 1 John 5:10

4 Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized moredisciples than John 3:22, 26

2 (though Jesus Himself did not

baptize, but His disciples), 1 Cor. 1:143 He left Judea and departedagain to Galilee.

4 But He needed to go throughSamaria.

5 So He came to a city of Sa-maria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Gen. 33:19; 48:22

6 Now Jacobs well was there.

Jesus therefore, being wearied fromHis journey, sat thus by the well. Itwas about the sixth hour.

7 A woman of Samaria came todraw water. Jesus said to her, GiveMe a drink.

8 For His disciples had goneaway into the city to buy food. v. 32

9 Then the woman of Samariasaid to Him, How is it that You,being a Jew, ask a drink from me, aSamaritan woman? For Jews haveno dealings with Samaritans.

10 Jesus answered and said to her,If you knew the gift of God, andwho it is who says to you, Give Mea drink, youwould have asked Him,and He would have given you livingwater. 7:38; Is. 12:3; 44:3

11 The woman said to Him, Sir,You have nothing to draw with, and

the well is deep. Where then do Youget that living water?

12 Are You greater than our fa- ther Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as wellas his sons and his livestock?

13 Jesusanswered and said to her,Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again,

14 but whoever drinks of the wa- ter that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall givehim will become in him a fountainof water springing up into everlast-ing life. 7:37, 38

15 The woman said to Him, Sir,give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw. 6:34

16 Jesus said to her, Go, call yourhusband, and come here.

17 The woman answered andsaid, I have no husband. Jesussaid to her, You have well said, Ihave no husband,

18 for you have had five hus-

bands, and the one whom you nowhave is not your husband; in thatyou spoke truly.

19 The woman said to Him, Sir, Iperceive that You are a prophet.

20 Our fathers worshiped on thismountain, and you Jews say that inJerusalem is the place where oneought to worship. Deut. 12:5, 11

21 Jesus said to her, Woman, be-

lieve Me, the hour is coming whenyou will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Fa- ther.

22 You worship what you do notknow; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. Rom. 9:5

23 But the hour is coming, andnow is, when the true worshiperswill worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.

24 God is Spirit, and those whoworship Him must worship in spiritand truth. 2 Cor. 3:17

25 The woman said to Him, Iknow that Messiah is coming (whois called Christ). When He comes,He will tell us all things. 1:41

26 Jesus said to her, I who speak to you am He. Matt. 26:63, 64

    1225 J OHN 5:2

27 And at this point His disciplescame, and they marveled that He talked with a woman; yet no onesaid, What do You seek? or, Whyare You talking with her?

28 Thewoman then left her water-pot, went her way into the city, andsaid to the men,

29 Come, see a Man who told meall things that I ever did. Could thisbe the Christ? v. 25

30 Then they went out of the cityand came to Him.

31 In the meantime His disciplesurged Him, saying, Rabbi, eat.

32 But He said to them, I havefood to eat of which you do notknow. v. 8

33 Therefore the disciples said toone another, Has anyone broughtHim anything to eat?

34 Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me,and to finish His work. 6:38

35 Do you not say, There are still

four months and then comes theharvest? Behold, I say to you, liftup your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for har- vest! Matt. 9:37, 38

36 And he who reaps receiveswages, and gathers fruit for eternallife, that both he who sows and hewho reaps may rejoice together.

37 For in this the saying is true:

One sows and another reaps.38 I sent you to reap that forwhich you have not labored; othershave labored, and you have enteredinto their labors.

39 And many of the Samaritansof that city believed in Him becauseof the word of the woman who testi-fied, He told me all that I ever did.

40 So when the Samaritans hadcome to Him, they urged Him tostay with them; and He stayed there two days.

41 And many more believed be-cause of His own word. Luke 4:32

42 Then they said to the woman,Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselveshave heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, a the Saviorof the world. 1 John 4:14

43 Now after the two days He de-parted from there and went to Gal-ilee.

44 For Jesus Himself testified thata prophet has no honor in his owncountry. Matt. 13:57

45 So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, havingseen all the things He did in Jerusa-lem at the feast; for they also hadgone to the feast. 2:13, 23; 3:2

46 So Jesus came again to Canaof Galilee where He had made thewater wine. And there was a certainnobleman whose son was sick atCapernaum. 2:111

47 When he heard that Jesus hadcome out of Judea into Galilee, hewent to Him and implored Him tocome down and heal his son, for hewas at the point of death.

48 Then Jesus said to him, Un-less you people see signs and won-ders, you will by no means believe.

49 The nobleman said to Him,

Sir, come down before my childdies!50 Jesus said to him, Go your

way; your son lives. So the manbelieved the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way.

51 And as he was now goingdown, his servants met him and toldhim, saying, Your son lives!

52 Then he inquired of them the

hour when he got better. And theysaid to him, Yesterday at the sev-enth hour the fever left him.

53 So the father knew that it wasat the same hour inwhichJesus said to him, Your son lives. And hehimself believed, and his wholehousehold. Matt. 9:513

54 This again is the second signJesus did when He had come out of Judea into Galilee. 2:11

5 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up toJerusalem. 2:13; Deut. 16:16

2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which iscalled in Hebrew, Bethesda, a havingfive porches. Neh. 3:1, 32; 12:39

12 Then they asked him, Who is the Man who said to you, Take upyour bed and walk ?

13 But the one who was healeddid not know who it was, for Jesushad withdrawn, a multitude beingin that place. Luke 13:14; 22:51

14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, See,you have been made well. Sin nomore, lest a worse thing come uponyou. 8:11

15 The man departed and told theJews that it was Jesus who hadmade him well.

16 For this reason the Jews perse-cuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, abecause He had done these thingson the Sabbath. 8:37; 10:39

17 But Jesus answered them, My

Father has been working until now,and I have been working. 9:4

18 Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because Henot only broke the Sabbath, but alsosaid that God was His Father, mak-ing Himself equal with God. 10:30

19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, Most assuredly, I say toyou, the Son can do nothing of Him-self, but what He sees the Father do;for whatever He does, the Son alsodoes in like manner. v. 30; 6:38

20 For the Father loves the Son,and shows Him all things that HeHimself does; and He will showHim greater works than these, thatyou may marvel. Matt. 3:17; 11:27

21 For as the Father raises thedead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will.

22 For the Father judges no one,but has committed all judgment to the Son, Acts 17:31; 2 Tim. 4:1

9 Jesus said to him, Have I beenwith you so long, and yet you havenot known Me, Philip? He who hasseen Me has seen the Father; so howcan you say, Show us the Father?

10 Do you not believe that I amin the Father, and the Father in Me?The words that I speak to you I donot speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. vv. 11, 20; 5:19; 10:38

11 Believe Me that I am in theFather and the Father in Me, or elsebelieve Me for the sake of the works themselves. 5:36; 10:38

he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greaterworks than these he will do, be-cause I go to My Father. Matt. 10:1

loves Me. And he who loves Me willbe loved by My Father, and I willlove him and manifest Myself tohim. 1 John 2:5

22 Judas (not Iscariot) said toHim, Lord, how is it that You willmanifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?

23 Jesus answered and said tohim, If anyone loves Me, he willkeep My word; and My Father willlove him, and We will come to himand make Our home with him. v. 15

24 He who does not love Me doesnot keep My words; and the wordwhich you hear is not Mine but theFathers who sent Me. 5:19

25 These things I have spoken toyou while being present with you.

26 But the Helper, the HolySpirit, whom the Father will sendin My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remem-brance all things that I said to you.

3 You are already clean be-cause of the word which I have spo-ken to you. 13:10; 17:17

4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of it-self, unless it abides in the vine, nei- ther can you, unless you abide inMe. 17:23; Eph. 3:17

5 I am the vine, you are thebranches. Hewho abides in Me, andI in him, bears much fruit; for with-out Me you can do nothing. v. 1

6 If anyone does not abide inMe, he is cast out as a branch andis withered; and they gather themand throw them into the fire, and they are burned. Matt. 3:10

7 If you abide in Me, and Mywords abide in you, you will a askwhat you desire, and it shallbe donefor you. 14:13; 16:23; 1 John 2:14

8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you willbe My disciples. 8:31; Matt. 5:16

9 As the Father loved Me, I also

have loved you; abide in My love.10 If you keep My command-ments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Fathers com-mandments and abide in His love.

11 These things I have spoken toyou, that My joy may remain in you,and that your joy may be full.

12 This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have

loved you. 1 John 3:1113 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down ones life forhis friends. 1 John 3:16

14 You are My friends if you dowhatever I command you. 14:15

15 No longer do I call you ser- vants, for a servant does not knowwhat his master is doing; but I havecalled you friends, for all things thatI heard from My Father I have madeknown to you. 13:16

16 You did not choose Me, but Ichose you and appointed you thatyou should go and bear fruit, andthat your fruit should remain, thatwhatever you ask the Father in Myname He may give you. 6:70

17 These things I command you, that you love one another. v. 12

18 If the world hates you, you

know that it hated Me before ithated you. 1 John 3:13

19 If you were of the world, theworld would love its own. Yet be-cause you are not of the world, butI chose you out of the world, there-fore the world hates you. 17:14

20 Remember the word that Isaid to you, A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecutedMe, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keepyours also. 13:16; Ezek. 3:7

21 But all these things they will

do to you for My names sake, be-cause they do not know Him whosent Me. 16:2; Matt. 10:22

24 If I had not done among them

the works whichnoone elsedid, theywould have no sin; but now theyhave seen and also hated both Meand My Father. 3:2; 14:9

25 But this happened that theword might be fulfilled which iswritten in their law, They hated Me without a cause. a Ps. 69:4

26 But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from theFather, the Spirit of truth who pro-ceeds from the Father, He will tes- tify of Me. 14:16, 17

you, that when the a time comes, youmay remember that I told you of them. And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because Iwas with you.

5 But now I go away to Himwho sent Me, and none of you asksMe, Where are You going? 7:33

6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrowhas filled yourheart. vv. 20, 22

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that Igo away; for if I do not go away, theHelper will not come to you; but if Idepart, I will send Him to you. 15:26

8 And when He has come, Hewill convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

9 of sin, because they do not be-lieve in Me; Acts 2:22

10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me nomore; 5:32; Acts 2:32

    11 of judgment, because the

ruler of this world is judged. 12:3112 I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear themnow. Acts 4:33

13 However, when He, the Spiritof truth, has come, He will guideyou into all truth; for He will notspeak on His own authority, butwhatever He hears He will speak;and He will tell you things to come.

14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15:26

15 All things that the Father hasare Mine. Therefore I said that Hewill take of Mine and declare it toyou. a Matt. 11:27

16 A little while, and you will notsee Me; and again a little while, andyou will see Me, because I go to theFather. 7:33; 12:35; 13:3

17 Then some of His disciples saidamong themselves, What is this that He says to us, A little while, and you will not see Me; and againa little while, and you will see Me ;and, because I go to the Father ?

18 They said therefore, What is this that He says, A little while ? Wedo not know what He is saying.

19 Now Jesus knew that they de-

sired to ask Him, and He said to them, Are you inquiring amongyourselves about what I said, A lit- tle while, and you will not see Me;and again a little while, and you willsee Me?

20 Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; and you willbe sorrowful, but your sorrow willbe turned into joy. Luke 24:32, 41

21 A woman, when she is in la-bor, has sorrow because her hourhas come; but as soon as she hasgiven birth to the child, she nolonger remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has beenborn into the world. Is. 13:8; 26:17

22 Therefore you now have sor-row; but I will see you again andyour heart will rejoice, and your joyno one will take from you. 1 Pet. 1:8

23 And in that day you will askMe nothing. Most assuredly, I say toyou, whatever you ask the Father inMy name He will give you. Matt. 7:724 Until now you have askednothing in My name. Ask, and youwill receive, that your joy may befull. 14:13, 14; 15:11; 17:13

25 These things I have spoken toyou in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longerspeak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the

Father. 7:1326 In that day you will ask in Myname, and I do not say to you that Ishall pray the Father for you; 17:9

Again, I leave the world and go to the Father. vv. 5, 10, 17; 13:1, 329 His disciples said to Him, See,

14 I have given them Your word;and the world has hated them be-cause they are not of the world, justas I am not of the world. 8:23; 15:19
