WARSAWS WEIGHING MORE THAN

ARE UNLOADED AT FISH HOUSE
About nine thousand pounds of redsnappers were landed here from thenew schooner John M Keen whicharrived yesterday after a long andeventful trip from the New Englandcoast to her new home in Southernwaters The shooner has been pur-chased
¬
by the Saunders Fish companyand yesterday afternoon rounded up atthe docks and discharged the firstcatch for the local house Beforecoming to Pensacola from the NewEngland home the schooner made a-
very profitable trip to the southernsnapper banks and came In withplenty of the deep sea beauties-
In addition to the snappers and afew groupers the schooner unloadeasome of the largest warsaws that haveever been received at the local fishhouses Four of them weighed exactly145 pounds each One weighed 150pounds and the largest weighed 235pounds All were taken into the fishhouse and stored in the ice boxes-
A large number of visitors were onthe wharf when the schooner came upthe bay Many visitors were attractedthere by the story in yesterdays Jour ¬
nal concerning the lively movement inthe exporting business at Pensacolabut when the new schooner arrivedtheir attention was wholly occupied inseeing the big fish hauled out of thevessel a hook having been insertedInto the mouth of each of the bigores and two sturdy fishermen hauledaway Many exclamations of wondercame from people on the wahrfwho had never witnessed such a sight-In the past
The vessel passed through variousstages of weather From the region-of icefcergs to the balm tropics theseamen enjoyed their long trip Atypical New England crew is aboardand most of them will remain at Pen ¬

ntSURVEYING FORAN INLAND CANALS-
pecial to the JournalSanborn Fla Dee 28Capt W b
Seeley engineer in charge with hiscorps of five engineers and crew oftwenty men have completed the sur ¬
for the inland canal to Ocklockne-river
>
a distance of one hundred andninetyseven miles
This is for the canal that has beenagitated from Jacksonville to CarrahpIle and may be extended to NewOrleans
Crooked river is now being survexed the soundings taken and all theworst bends will be surveyed for cut ¬
offs as some of them will save amile by cutting one hundred yardsand some less As the writer ranbeats on this stream for ten years heknows whereof he speaks Once apassenger said This river has theright name Wo agreed with himas anyone that goes through it wouldknow that it was crooked
ian Pedro bay was the worst placefound between Ocklooknoe river andiknnvilIe It so Capt Seeley in¬
forms us has no drainage except asmall portion by Fonholloway riverand this bay is the highest countryin Madison and Taylor counties It Isvery fertile and all around it is veryfine timber with no mode of transpor-tation
¬
The canal would supply ampletransportation for the timber and farmproducts These lands ar very pro-ductive
¬
and a large quantity of goveminent lands are situated on tje pro-posed line of the canal and would behomesteaded if there was transporta¬
tionThis bay was the most difficutyplace found on the entire survey itbeing fifteen miles across the wateraad swamps
The proposed line strikes Ocklock ¬
nee river south of the McIntyre runsup the river to Crooked river anddown Crooked river to CarrabelleThis part of the work will we think-be of immediate and permanent benefit-to navigation as there will probablybe a chart made of Crooked river andthe feasibility will come out in thereport
The plan is to cut this canaltwelve feet deep and one hundredyards wide and there are places thatthe sides will require concrete to makeit hold The portion of Ocklockneeriver that is used will require prac-tically
¬
no work and the strengthening-of Crooked river will require as largean expenditure as the dredging ot thecanal as a large portion is very deepand over one hundred yards wide
The distance from Jacksonville toCarrabelle via canal will be approxi-mately
¬
127 miles while the most di ¬
rect line of railroad is further and thewater route is more than four timesthe distance
Capt Seeley is rushing to complete-the work by Jan 10 nexj
