side which may prove fatal The wounded boy is Earl Bradshaw re- siding ¬ with his mother at 436 West Government street The boy who did the shooting was Matt Delahanty or Delahunt who at one time resided on Intendencia street The police say that he is continually on the street The other boys in the crowd are Ed Bradshaw a young brother of the wounded boy Sam J Bell and Jas J Edmundson The gun they carried and which produced the wound on the Bradshaw boy is a 22calibre rifle and the bullet is lodged in the Brad ¬ shaw boys side It could not be lo ¬ cated by Dr L DeM Blocker who was summoned to attend him The boys condition was reported very critical at a late hour last night His father Chas Bradshaw a shlnVright by trade and occupation is at work- at Monroe La but has been notifi- ed ¬ The mother was alone with the children when the wounded child was carried to the home in a hack through the kindness of JE Concan non All Ran Away Procuring the rifle from some source the police hearing that it had been taken without the owners knowledge or permission the boys started out in the woods for a lark The Delahunt boy carried the gun They reached a point near the Y M C A boathouse they persuaded the boy- to walk He was game for he walk ¬ ed a few steps and would fall ex ¬ hausted Then they would cheer him again and he would get on his feet- It was in the struggles of this nature that they were found As luck would have it Mr Concannon came along and asked the boys what was the trouble They said the Bradshaw bov- was shot Then the gentleman start- ed ¬ to get real behind the scene The costumes used in this ball are under construction in Atlanta by the same modiste who designed and exe- cuted those used by the Atlantans un der Prof Morris when he gave the Reilly there They are beautiful In effect and handsome and will vie with those of costly brocades and satins The crepe paper has great possibili- ties ¬ under capable handling and the texture is especially adapted to the crisp airy costume associated in the mind with the dance- In the Barn Dance the combination- of rural red and simple dooryard flower costume will produce an effect dear to the heartour and I the milkmaids will all be there the natural tenants of the garden The boys representing the roosters- In age ranging from six to thirto will wear a realistic costume with feathers wings and all thousand pounds of red snappers were landed here from the new schooner John M Keen which arrived yesterday after a long and eventful trip from the New England coast to her new home in Southern waters The shooner has been pur- chased ¬ by the Saunders Fish company and yesterday afternoon rounded up at the docks and discharged the first catch for the local house Before coming to Pensacola from the New England home the schooner made a- very profitable trip to the southern snapper banks and came In with plenty of the deep sea beauties- In addition to the snappers and a few groupers the schooner unloadea some of the largest warsaws that have ever been received at the local fish houses Four of them weighed exactly 145 pounds each One weighed 150 pounds and the largest weighed 235 pounds All were taken into the fish house and stored in the ice boxes- A large number of visitors were on the wharf when the schooner came up the bay Many visitors were attracted there by the story in yesterdays Jour ¬ nal concerning the lively movement in the exporting business at Pensacola but when the new schooner arrived their attention was wholly occupied in seeing the big fish hauled out of the vessel a hook having been inserted Into the mouth of each of the big ores and two sturdy fishermen hauled away Many exclamations of wonder came from people on the wahrf who had never witnessed such a sight- In the past The vessel passed through various stages of weather From the region- of icefcergs to the balm tropics the seamen enjoyed their long trip A typical New England crew is aboard and most of them corps of five engineers and crew of twenty men have completed the sur ¬ for the inland canal to Ocklockne- river > a distance of one hundred and ninetyseven miles This is for the canal that has been agitated from Jacksonville to Carra hpIle and may be extended to New Orleans Crooked river is now being sur vexed the soundings taken and all the worst bends will be surveyed for cut ¬ offs as some of them will save a mile by cutting one hundred yards and some less As the writer ran beats on this stream for ten years he knows whereof he speaks Once a passenger said This river has the right name Wo agreed with him as anyone that goes through it would know that it was crooked ian Pedro bay was the worst place found between Ocklooknoe river and iknnvilIe It so Capt Seeley in ¬ forms us has no drainage except a small portion by Fonholloway river and this bay is the highest country in Madison and Taylor counties It Is very fertile and all around it is very fine timber with no mode of transpor- tation ¬ The canal would supply ample transportation for the timber and farm products These lands ar very pro- ductive ¬ and a large quantity of gov eminent lands are situated on tje pro- posed line of the canal and would be homesteaded if there was transporta ¬ tionThis bay was the most difficuty place found on the entire survey it being fifteen miles across the water aad swamps The proposed line strikes Ocklock ¬ nee river south of the McIntyre runs up the river to Crooked river and down Crooked river to Carrabelle This part of the work will we think- be of immediate and permanent benefit- to navigation as there will probably be a chart made of Crooked river and the feasibility will come out in the report The plan is to cut this canal twelve feet deep and one hundred yards wide and there are places that the sides will require concrete to make it hold The portion of Ocklocknee river that is used will require prac- tically ¬ no work and the strengthening- of Crooked river will require as large an expenditure as the dredging ot the canal as a large portion is very deep and over one hundred yards wide The distance from Jacksonville to Carrabelle via canal will be approxi- mately ¬ 127 miles while the most di ¬ rect line of railroad is further and the water route is more than four times the distance Capt Seeley is rushing to complete- the work by Jan 10 nexj F BIG FISH ARE

NEW SCHOONER

WARSAWS WEIGHING MORE THAN

ONE HUNDRED AND ONE WEIGH ¬

ING TWO HUNDRED POUNDS

ARE UNLOADED AT FISH HOUSE

About nine thousand pounds of redsnappers were landed here from thenew schooner John M Keen whicharrived yesterday after a long andeventful trip from the New Englandcoast to her new home in Southernwaters The shooner has been pur-chased

¬

by the Saunders Fish companyand yesterday afternoon rounded up atthe docks and discharged the firstcatch for the local house Beforecoming to Pensacola from the NewEngland home the schooner made a-

very profitable trip to the southernsnapper banks and came In withplenty of the deep sea beauties-

In addition to the snappers and afew groupers the schooner unloadeasome of the largest warsaws that haveever been received at the local fishhouses Four of them weighed exactly145 pounds each One weighed 150pounds and the largest weighed 235pounds All were taken into the fishhouse and stored in the ice boxes-

A large number of visitors were onthe wharf when the schooner came upthe bay Many visitors were attractedthere by the story in yesterdays Jour ¬

nal concerning the lively movement inthe exporting business at Pensacolabut when the new schooner arrivedtheir attention was wholly occupied inseeing the big fish hauled out of thevessel a hook having been insertedInto the mouth of each of the bigores and two sturdy fishermen hauledaway Many exclamations of wondercame from people on the wahrfwho had never witnessed such a sight-In the past

The vessel passed through variousstages of weather From the region-of icefcergs to the balm tropics theseamen enjoyed their long trip Atypical New England crew is aboardand most of them will remain at Pen ¬

ntSURVEYING FORAN INLAND CANALS-

pecial to the JournalSanborn Fla Dee 28Capt W b

Seeley engineer in charge with hiscorps of five engineers and crew oftwenty men have completed the sur ¬

for the inland canal to Ocklockne-river

>

a distance of one hundred andninetyseven miles

This is for the canal that has beenagitated from Jacksonville to CarrahpIle and may be extended to NewOrleans

Crooked river is now being survexed the soundings taken and all theworst bends will be surveyed for cut ¬

offs as some of them will save amile by cutting one hundred yardsand some less As the writer ranbeats on this stream for ten years heknows whereof he speaks Once apassenger said This river has theright name Wo agreed with himas anyone that goes through it wouldknow that it was crooked

ian Pedro bay was the worst placefound between Ocklooknoe river andiknnvilIe It so Capt Seeley in¬

forms us has no drainage except asmall portion by Fonholloway riverand this bay is the highest countryin Madison and Taylor counties It Isvery fertile and all around it is veryfine timber with no mode of transpor-tation

¬

The canal would supply ampletransportation for the timber and farmproducts These lands ar very pro-ductive

¬

and a large quantity of goveminent lands are situated on tje pro-posed line of the canal and would behomesteaded if there was transporta¬

tionThis bay was the most difficutyplace found on the entire survey itbeing fifteen miles across the wateraad swamps

The proposed line strikes Ocklock ¬

nee river south of the McIntyre runsup the river to Crooked river anddown Crooked river to CarrabelleThis part of the work will we think-be of immediate and permanent benefit-to navigation as there will probablybe a chart made of Crooked river andthe feasibility will come out in thereport

The plan is to cut this canaltwelve feet deep and one hundredyards wide and there are places thatthe sides will require concrete to makeit hold The portion of Ocklockneeriver that is used will require prac-tically

¬

no work and the strengthening-of Crooked river will require as largean expenditure as the dredging ot thecanal as a large portion is very deepand over one hundred yards wide

The distance from Jacksonville toCarrabelle via canal will be approxi-mately

¬

127 miles while the most di ¬

rect line of railroad is further and thewater route is more than four timesthe distance

Capt Seeley is rushing to complete-the work by Jan 10 nexj
