From the Principal’s Desk (as written by the A.P.) Dear Parents, Students and Friends It is hard to believe that we are approaching the last three weeks of Term 3. We have certainly packed a lot into the past eight weeks:- Open Morning, Prep 2018 Information Night, NAPLAN, Country and Culture Day and this week the Year 4 Camp. Our Year 4 campers returned to school on Wednesday looking tired but full of happy stories of their adventures at Arrabri Lodge. Once again, our students were able to experience some wonderful activities ranging from the giant swing to travelling on Puffing Billy. These camping opportunities allow the students to get to know each other in a different setting – cementing some old friendships and building others. Thank you to all the Year 4’s students for your enthusiastic participation and a big thank you to the following staff who attended the camp:- Dan Anderson, Lori O’Neill, Eliza Crellin, Rosie Morton, Mick Dewdney, Kate Little, Michael Tindale, Steve Tsounas, Brittany Middleton and Megan Street. Student Reports Our staff have been very busy writing the students’ reports. Our teachers continually assess throughout the year, so as to check on each student’s level of understanding and achievement of tasks that have been completed and what we need to work on with your child to build on their skills. As this is the first time, the teachers are reporting against the Victorian Curriculum there has been an increased level of dialogue as they moderate with each other about the progress of the students. We will send out further details about the Victorian curriculum with reference to reporting in the coming weeks. Our favourite topic –PARKING!!!! Whilst many of you would be saying –“not again” unfortunately, I have to raise the issue –yet again. This time about the 2 minute parking area on Grand Boulevard. The parking signs clearly indicate a limit of 2 minutes (at school start /finish times), but every day this car park is full, with parents parking here and going in to the school to drop off or collect their children, taking well in excess of 2 minutes. The result being that it adds extra congestion around the school by forcing those parents who just want to kiss and drop off to circle around until parking spots become available. The extra congestion also means that it increases the risk of an accident and possible accident involving a child being hit by a car. This is always my worry and my worst fear at the end of the day. Can I respectfully ask that all parents who need to go into the school to drop off / collect their children find a more appropriate place to park? Alternatively, they could arrange for their children to walk into school by themselves or walk out to the car to meet them. Adam Kerr (Crossing Supervisor) is always willing to help and he is often cross and expresses his thoughts to me with the way many parents park inappropriately. Dear Parents, Students and Friends

It is hard to believe that we are approaching the last three weeks of Term 3.

Student Reports

Our staff have been very busy writing the students’ reports.

Reconciliation Week.

On Friday the 26th May, our school captains, Mia Zapulla, Atticus Speakman-Rush, Mia Maywald and Will Hammond, joined with several other students from schools across Eltham as part of the Nillumbik Shire Council Flag raising event, as part of the Reconciliation Week celebrations. Mia Z and Atticus gave a speech in recognition of National Sorry Day. They spoke about what it meant to the students at Montmorency South Primary School. Our four captains were great ambassadors for our school. We are very proud of them.

Movie Night – Thursday June 29th Just a reminder that the Parents and Friends group are holding a family movie night on Thursday June 29th. This year’s movie is ‘Moana.’ Advertising is available at our Movie Night for $50 per advertisement. This is a great opportunity to advertise to you local community. MSPS Achievers-

Congratulations to our singers from the last two weeks- Hudson Young, Zac Zaga, Ollie Crawford-Condie, Jake Zapulla, Evie Watson-Jones and Jimmy Timmons - who led the assembly in

singing the National Anthem. We appreciate their willingness to assist our whole school. Congratulations to Amelie Vulich, who has been selected to represent Team Vic swimming team and will be competing in the Pan Pacific Games in Adelaide in December this year.

What a fantastic effort by Annalies Veldman who cycled 70kms over two days. She demonstrated her resilience, determination and positivity especially on day 2 when she was riding in very wet and cold conditions. Ariel Johnston and Jamie Cracknell were the proud recipients of the Principal’s Powerful Owl award. These awards are presented to students who exemplify our

Monty South values. Well done!

Update on Leanne Thank you to all of those parents and students who have inquired about Leanne and her progress. She is on the mend and finding it hard to take the time to relax. She has already attended School Council last Tuesday night and we may see her pop in sometime next week. We wish her all the best for a speedy recovery.

I hope you have a relaxing break over the long weekend. Take care.

From the Business Manager Dear Parents

Did you know that donations to our School Building and Library funds are tax deductible?

End of financial year is approaching. By donating to our School Building or Library Funds before the 30th June you can claim the full amount of money that you donated on your tax return.

The Department of Education & Training grants are insufficient to keep our buildings in their best condition or provide our students with all the library resources they need but at Monty South we have an ongoing commitment to these projects.

Voluntary contributions are incredibly important to our school. They assist in ensuring we can maintain and update school facilities, our library materials and a range of other vital projects.

School Council has a suggested voluntary amount of $100.00 per family for each fund but we are happy to receive as much or as little as you can afford. Every donation you make over $2 is tax deductible and it all goes to towards providing better resources and facilities for our students.

Voluntary contributions are incredibly important for our school. If you would like to contribute, you can donate via Compass payments under Course Confirmation/School Payments where you can alter the suggested amount to be what you would like to contribute. Alternatively, you can give us a call in the school office or pop in and see us.

Many thanks. Judith

FOUNDATION Classroom Clippings

This week in Prep… The ‘100 Days of Reading’ wall is gaining more and more members each week. This area celebrates the achievement of reading100 books and recording them in the student’s reader diary. This week Clover Keyt, Tom Fleming, Lily Jones, Sebastian Drljo, Harrison Brown and Oliver have been added to our display. Fantastic job! Learning Focuses

Maths – This week we have revisited addition and have been using the count on strategy to help us solve addition problems. When it comes to counting on, we have learnt that you start with the largest number then we add the remaining number to reach the total. Students have also been learning about length of time, in regards to morning, midday and night, by relating it to what activities they complete during these times.

Reading – In our reading sessions, we have been focusing on ordering the events and information in the texts we are reading. This is to assist us with our recalling skills. We have also been learning about syllables and that they help us break up words, which helps us

when we are sounding out. Writing – This week we have continued with the topic of procedural writing. Students have been busy making whirly birds and hamburgers in class and have been recording the ingredients or materials they used and the steps they completed to create their final product. Prep Investigations – We have been working hard on designing and constructing our own kaleidoscopes. Students were required to think about how their kaleidoscopes would look and the colours they wanted to use. We also used our procedural knowledge from reading and writing to help us. Inquiry – The students have continuing to research what emotions and colours look like in nature. They have been doing this by brainstorming in small groups. Students have been allocated into one of the 3 emotions (anger, happiness and sadness) and will eventually be creating something that represents their emotion.

Premier’s Reading Challenge P-2 All students at MSPS will be participating in the Premiers' Reading Challenge. The challenge goals will be reached at school for students in Prep-Year 2. If you would like your child's login details so you can books as well, please speak to your classroom teacher. All children will receive a certificate of completion at the conclusion of the challenge. Each child who completes the challenge will have the opportunity to have their name appear online on the Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge Honour Roll. Please access your Compass account if you wish to give permission for your child's name to appear on the Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge Online Honour Roll. If no response is given by the due date, we will assume permission has not been granted.

YEAR 1 Classroom Clippings

Over the past few weeks, some Year 1 students have enjoyed the opportunity to participate in ‘Makey Makey Club’. Makey Makey club operates each Tuesday lunchtime in the Prep Investigations area and consists of a range of STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) activities aimed at a Year 1 age group. Some of the activities provided include making origami, building with lego and making electrical circuits.

Other lunchtime activities that operate include Library and Board Games on a Monday and Wednesday and there is soon to be a Year 1 Mathletics club on a Thursday lunchtime.

Next week your child will be involved in:

Reading

The students will be beginning to learn about ‘Making connections’ when they read a text. They will be discussing how texts can relate to themselves and their personal experiences and what it reminds them of and why.

Writing The students will be continuing to learn about Information Reports and how to compose and construct them. They will be using a familiar toy or object from home to write an information report about.

Spelling The students are continuing to work on different spelling rules in their spelling classes. They are also learning how to apply these rules when spelling unknown words.

Mathematics The students will revising and expanding on their understanding of subtraction. They will be learning different strategies to use when solving subtraction problems and will consolidate this through a range of hands on activities and games.

Inquiry The students have been working in groups to create their own narrative using the photography and editing skills that they have learnt this semester. They have composed narratives and drawn them onto storyboards and are now working on taking photos and editing them.

Premier’s Reading Challenge P-2 All students at MSPS will be participating in the Premiers' Reading Challenge. The challenge goals will be reached at school for students in Prep-Year 2. If you would like your child's login details so you can books as well, please speak to your classroom teacher. YEAR 2 Classroom Clippings

Our hard working Year 2 students have been busily working away on several aspects of their learning journey.

In reading, we have finished our compare and contrast unit. This week we are completing our CARS and STARS benchmark testing before tackling our next unit on Fact and Opinion.

In writing, we have completed our writing moderation piece and are re-visiting our explanation and narrative work that we have worked on throughout the term.

In maths, we have been looking at different types of graphs, involving tallies, bar graphs and line plots. Students have enjoyed collecting, organising and presenting data. They have created graphs including number of pets and a highlight was an m & m graphing activity based on colour. We are continuing to look at open-ended addition and subtraction problems also.

Premier’s Reading Challenge P-2 All students at MSPS will be participating in the Premiers' Reading Challenge. The challenge goals will be reached at school for students in Prep-Year 2. If you would like your child's login details so you can books as well, please speak to your classroom teacher. YEAR 5 Classroom Clippings Dear Parents, You are invited to attend the Year 5 Expo – ‘Does It Matter if It’s Black or White?’ During weekly Inquiry sessions, the students have investigated scepticism, questioning their beliefs and challenging their ideas. They have been learning about being sceptical with common superstitions, how to balance competing evidence and science experiments. The students have been very busy this term preparing for the Expo. Students have investigated many contentious beliefs, from the myth of big foot to the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle. Each student will have their own presentation showing information presented on their chosen topic, through posters, puppets, Keynote presentations, costumes, 3D printing and much more. Visitors will be asked to follow the directions through the BER to experience the whole expo. It is expected that the Year 5 students stay at school until 4.30 under the supervision of their classroom teacher. Senior School Expo Date: Thursday 29th June Time: 12.30– 4.30 Where: BER building

Reading Students are developing their vocabulary through class discussions based around an image with a rich question. For example, do you know how Lake Taupo in the middle of New Zealand’s North Island formed or what an anthropormorphic diving suit is? In the coming weeks students will be continuing to develop their research skills. They will be practising the process of reading a passage of text and taking brief dot-point notes to capture the information for later use in writing.

Writing

Students are now well underway with their information reports on their inquiry topics. We’re moving into the revising, editing and publishing stages so that means students are typing up their reports on their iPads. This is a great opportunity to think about how professional articles are published. That means considering titles, images, captions and features such as bibliographies.

Maths

Students are continuing to work on their 3D shapes rich task. For this unit they will need to bring in a cardboard box to deconstruct, such as a cereal box. The students are enjoying finding the properties of prime and composite numbers and binary numbers during their maths workshops.

Inquiry At home students should be finishing off their inquiry poster and home choice project (e.g. iMovie, Keynote, model or costume). In Week 9 (begins Monday 12th June) students will discuss five open questions visitors at the Expo could ask about their inquiry project. Then at home they will find a way to display those questions at the Expo. Of course, the information reports are well underway at school.
