Father’s Day Breakfast Our Father’s Day Breakfast was once again well attended last Friday. Dads and their children were greeted on arrival at school with the smell of sizzling bacon and eggs thanks to our wonderful volunteers from the Parents and Friends Association and our dedicated staff. A big thanks also to the Thomson family who donated some gourmet coffee for the morning. It was a fabulous community morning, with lots of positive feedback and we are sure it will be happening again next year, so don’t miss out! Assistant Principal Appointment It is with pleasure that we can announce that after a formal recruitment process, Tony Stokes has been appointed as the Assistant Principal in a substantive position at Balwyn North Primary School. I am sure that you will join us in congratulating Tony on his appointment. District Athletics On Monday the 5th of September, 76 BNPS students competed at the Doncaster Athletics Track, where they competed against 13 local schools in the District Athletics competition. Congratulations to all the students who competed on the day and a special mention to the following students, who have progressed to the Divisional event: Dinethsa (high jump), Rachel (long jump), Olivier (800m and high jump), Finn (triple jump), Adem (200m), Owen (hurdles and triple jump), Han (shot put) and Lachie, Owen, Aaron and Adem (boys relay). Good luck in the next event! Principal for a Day Program: “Principal for a Day” gives a wide range of community and business leaders from all walks of life a first-hand experience of a normal day in a Victorian government school. Over 150 business and community leaders will take part this year. Shruti Singh, who is Head of the Third Party Services National Australia Bank (and also mother to one of our Year 2 students), took part in this initiative at Balwyn North Primary School today. We really enjoyed exchanging insights about leadership roles with Shruti and also showcasing our wonderful school.

Swimming Program As you would be aware, the BNPS Swimming Program will once again take place in week 3 and 4 of Term 4. Prep to Year 2 students will be using the Kew Recreation Centre and our students in Year 3-6 will be swimming at Watermarc in Greensborough. Our students in Year 5 and 6 will have a particular focus on a fitness and aquatic program. We thank you for your support of this important program. CAPTAIN’S CORNER

Hi everyone,

Last Saturday, it was an exciting day for everyone who did Aeroschools because they had an Aerochallenge! Everybody per-

formed spectacularly and had a lot of fun! Also, Nationals for Aeroschools is coming up in Bendigo on the 16 th September 2016!

The groups that are going to Nationals are rehearsing very hard.

Last Monday, it was a very special day for some of the year 3, 4, 5 and 6’s because they went to district athletics! It was a day

full of excitement! Everyone ran, jumped or threw amazingly! Some students from BNPS were so good that they got into Divi-

sion! Good luck to everyone that got into Division!!

VARIETY CHARITY

Alecia from 2S donated her hair, which she has been growing for more than a year, on the weekend

to the charity called Variety.

Variety takes donations of hair which is sent to specialised wig makers who create wigs for people

with alopecia. Variety is paid for the hair which goes directly back into their program, helping fund

wigs for kids in need, so that more than one person will benefit from the hair donation.

Alecia’s mum said that although Alecia loves her long beautiful hair and was a little unsure about

donating at first, she decided in the end she wanted to do it because the sick kids need her hair more

than her.

Mr Stokes interviewed Alecia during the week for her thoughts.

“My mum took me to the hairdresser so that I could donate my hair to charity. I had three ponytails

cut off. My hair is going to the Post Office and then sent to Variety to help make a wig.

“I feel proud of myself because I gave my hair to people who don’t have hair and they might feel a

little bit happier”.

Congratulations Alecia on your thoughtful actions and

demonstrating empathy and support for others.

Congratulations to our Senior Chess Group!!

Yesterday, 20 of our strongest players from the Senior Chess group competed in a “Chess Victoria” inter-school tournament, in our school Hall. It was very exciting to host this event and we were pleased to wel-come 9 other school to join us in a day of competitive, but friendly play. The appearance of three of the strongest Chess playing schools in the State struck fear into our hearts. The reputations of Mount View Primary, St Andrew’s and Waverley Christian College are legendary in Chess circles. At the beginning of the tournament, aiming to finish in fourth place seemed like a reasona-ble goal. As usual, all of our players gave their very best to the competition. There were surprise wins and also surprise losses. Everyone showed great resilience and persistence in each of their games. At the end of one particular game, Aaron Chau, our strongest player on the day (6.5 wins) and the equal best player in the competition, was actually puffing. Sometimes a game is like a mental marathon! Henry Law rose to the challenge of the day and gave his best performance ever, with 6 amazing wins and Pasandul De Silva, Brandon Leung and James Deng contributed 5 wins each to our final score. Callista Leong-La competed strongly, as always, and was awarded 3rd placed girl in the tournament. For Oliver Chen (Year 1G), it was his first school tournament. His 5 wins from 7 games made him one of our top players. Sean Hawkins (Year 2A) was only a half point behind, showing that the future of Chess at Balwyn North is very bright. Ryan Ngo, Jason Qiao and James Fuller were all playing in their first inter-school tournament and each of them represented us very well. As the day progressed, we started to see that we were doing well against very strong competition. Our hopes rose half way through the tournament, when it was announced that we were in second place, but each player still had three tough games to go. After an amazingly strong last round, it was announced that we had finished in FIRST PLACE, along with Mount View Primary School. This was both an unlikely and incredibly good result from our dedicated players. Congratulations to Aaron Chau, Andrew Ngodinhson, Brandon Leung, Callista Leong-La, Elizabeth Ngodinhson, Henry Law, James Deng, James Fuller, Jason Qiao, Justin La, Kovida De Silva, Leo Zheng, Oliver Chen, Owen Cai, Pasandul De Silva, Ryan Ngi, Sean Hawkins, Shereuby Muttiah, Sophie Yang and Victor Li. Second Hand Uniform sale Tuesday 13th Sep. Donations welcome.

There will be a second hand uniform sale on Tuesday Sep 13th before

and after school 8.30-9am and 3.30 – 4pm outside the Main entrance

to the school.

If you have unwanted uniforms, we are accepting donations of clean/

laundered uniforms for the sale. Simply place in a plastic bag in the

sick bay. All money raised goes to the school.
