School Review

We look forward to welcoming two reviewers from the SIU on Thursday 27th and Friday 28th of July. The reviewers will be speaking with staff, students, parents and members of our school community and we look forward to hearing their recommendations for moving forward successfully on Friday.

School Camp - Tallebudgera

It is not long now until camp for our senior students. Thank you to parents for promptly returning your forms and advising us of your child’s special require-ments. We are looking forward to enjoying the many experiences camp has to offer.

School Musical—Alice

Our musical preparations are underway and the students are very excited about the upcoming musical this term to be held at Robina State High School on Friday 8th September at 6pm in the Performing Arts Centre. Children will be required to arrive at 1pm for a rehearsal prior to the performance.

School Opinion Survey

The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted 31 July to 25 August 2017. All families, school staff and a random sample of students will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what this school does well, and how this school can improve.

Access details for the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be sent home with students next week.

Parents/caregivers are welcome to complete their survey online at the school, and school computers will be available . Survey queries or requests for translations can be directed to myself by phoning the school or email me at [email protected].

Staff Development

Over the past two weeks the staff have been engaged in scanning and assessing our whole school literacy data. We will be beginning a cycle of inquiry through our regular staff meetings to determine a plan of action to improve our literacy pedagogy and meet our determined student needs. We will begin tracking the student progress and reflecting on our impact as teachers through the use of the Literacy Continuum. This is a tool that has been issued to all schools by the Department of Education and Training Qld, that explains the development of students’ literacy across 8 aspects including reading texts, comprehension, writing, vocabulary development, con-cepts about print, phonics and phonemic awareness.

Our teachers have completed targeted teaching plans for reading in collaboration with me to ena-ble them to identify student needs in reading and target their instruction during reading groups to meet those needs.

Fire Drill

This week our staff and students participated in a fire drill. I am happy to report that everyone evacuated their classrooms and assembled quickly and sensibly to our assembly point on the oval.

Hinterland Science Day

Later this term in week 8, Thursday 31st August, our students will be participating in a science day held at Ingleside State School. Please mark this day in your diaries with more information to follow.

Senior Design and Technology— Parachutes

Our senior students have been creating their own parachutes today with wonderful Mrs Price, our relief teacher. They de-signed their parachute and then tested and measured it’s effective-ness by flying them from the adventure playground. They were able to make adjustments after the first fight and improve their design and parachute be-fore attempting a second flight. Everyone enjoyed this lesson immensely.

FROM THE MUSIC ROOM...

For the past two weeks our students have been learning a Latin American piece of salsa music called Oye Como Va, by composer Tito Puonte from Cuba, with our talented music teacher, Josh Shelton. They have been making great sounds with their tuned and un-tuned percussion instru-ments. Check out our website for the video.
