Welcome back for a busy Term 3. I hope that all families had an opportunity to rest and relax over the winter holidays. Report cards were emailed out to all families at the start of the school holidays. Id invite all parents to read these carefully and to make contact with the classroom teachers to clarify anything that they would like more information on. Report cards will be completed again and issued to parents in the last week of term 4 to provide an end-of-year snapshot of student progress and achievement. Playgroup is off and running at Springbrook State School and it is extremely pleasing to see this service for the community in action. Playgroup is available to be accessed by any children living within the Springbrook area who are younger than school age. Our school supports the provision of playgroup as a service to our community and we provide one of our staff members, Mrs Sue Northam as Playgroup Coordinator’. We also supply the resources used to provide to all playgroup activities. Playgroup is a free activity and we encourage all families within our local community to join us. Let your friends and neighbours know that they are very much invited and welcome to come! Our school students entered the Mudgeeraba Show once again and displayed their handicraft talents with great success!. We were again assisted by the ladies in the Springbrook Craft Group and our students completed a long stitch tapestry that were entered individually into the competition. Springbrook certainly has talent as the follow- ing prizes were awarded: Years P-3 1st: Connor Years 4-7 1st: Samantha 2nd: Charlie 2nd: Tennille 3rd: Aidan 3rd: Arky Highly Commended: Cole Congratulations and well done to all of our students who entered. All entries are on display in our library now until the end of next week, July 25th. Please come and see them before or after school. Starting next week, we welcome a new staff member to our team, Michelle Hollis. Mrs Hollis is taking on the role of our Special Education Teacher and will be supporting students in classrooms. Mrs Hollis will be replacing Mrs Cavaye who was successful in gaining full-time work at one of her other schools. Mrs Hollis will be working on alternate Tuesdays and she brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our school. Active After School Sport (AASC) begins again this term for all students. This is a national initiative that provides primary school children with access to free sport and other structured physical activity programs in the after -school time slot of 3.00pm to 5.30pm. It aims to engage children in sport and other structured physical activities and through a positive and fun experience, develop a love of sport that inspires them to join a local sporting club. This term we are participating in touch football lessons and activities (the dance coach was unavailable) with a touch football coach. Our sessions will run on Monday afternoons starting July 28th from 3:15-4:15pm. Miss Nerida will be assisting and providing supervision during the AASC sessions. It would great if all students were able to take advantage of the AASC opportunity. Konnichi-wa.

Our wonderful Japanese students have finished their Japanese menu. They got very creative and the results were fabulous! Students used the site edu.glogster.com and are able to log on at home. Students in class were taken through our Japanese Edstudio ( https</x>://students.learningplace.eq.edu.au/lp/Pages/Default.aspx?pid=861469 ) and shown are long list of Japanese food websites. Things such as McDonalds, ( link here http://www.mcdonalds.co.jp/quality/basic_information/menu_info.php?mid=8564 Pizza Hut and more all exist in Japan but the menus are quite different to ours. They have prawn burgers, green tea donuts, and fish egg and sea-weed spaghetti. They even have rice burgers. The students were amazed at the menus online in Japan. It gave them a renewed inspiration to work on their own original Japanese menu in class.

Students are now working on a skit based in a restaurant. It is hoped students will be able to perform this for their classmates at the end of this term.

This term the students will be learning about celebrations is Japan. This is a wonderful area of Japanese culture to study for students and through the learning of the culture they come to understand why certain Japanese language is used in the way it is. For more information you may wish to look at this website with your children about Japanese culture: http://web-japan.org/kidsweb/ It is called Kids Web Japan and is a wonderful resource for all things Japanese.

Japanese Club is on every second week. We have been doing some cute origami— last time we made a cup and a piano. All students are welcome at second break every second week.

P&C News Thank you to all in our school community who supported our winter Pie Drive fundraiser just before the school holidays. The funds raised go towards supporting programs in our classrooms for our students. Plans are underway to host another one later in the year. The P&C would like to extend their gratitude to Gwyn for agreeing to the position of Treasurer as there were no other nominations. The next P&C meeting is coming up on Monday 28th July and we’d love to see some more of our parents. Our meetings are an opportunity to hear about what has been happening in our school, to ask any questions you may have and to share your ideas of how, as a parent group, we can help to make Springbrook State School even better than it already is. We meet in the senior classroom from 3:15pm.

Schools Planet Ark Toner Recycling Guessing Competition

A school from each state has won a pallet (that's 80 cartons!) of Reflex White 100% Recycled paper valued at $2,796, provided by Australian Paper, Planet Ark's Make it Recycled partner. Entrants had to register for a collection box then guess the number of toner cartridges it takes to make one kilometer of road from Tonerpave™ - a new type of asphalt using recycled "modified toner polymer". Springbrook State School guessed 20,666, submitted by Nerida.

We won with the closest guess in Queensland! The correct answer was 52,772! Thanks for entering us Nerida!

The message to take from this exciting win is to keep a look out for ways to recycle everyday items.

If you know people who use toner cartridges, let them know they can recycle them at a range of

stores. Just pop them in the “Cartridges 4 Planet Ark” collection box at Australia Post, Dick Smith,

Good Guys, Harvey Norman, or JB Hi-Fi. We also have our collection box in the school office.

Help Planet Ark reach their goal of 28 million cartridges collected by March 2015!

Playgroup Pops!

It has been our great pleasure to begin hosting Playgroup at Springbrook State School…. it is enormous fun! We have an average of 8 little cuties come to join in our activities which include construction, singing, painting, reading and of course socialising! We will be continuing to welcome anyone who wants to come along every second Monday 9.30am—11.30am. Our next Playgroup will be Monday 28th July. Hope to see you there!

It’s been a BUMPER semester in the Senior room! We have been creating some magnificent works of art, from colour wheels to water-colour landscapes; Andy Warhol-inspired Pop Art pieces, to entering a competition of artwork celebrating the 2018 Commonwealth Games, which will be held here on the Gold Coast. It almost feels as if we have 15 artists in residence now occupying the Senior Room! Please feel free to pop in anytime to admire our miniature gallery and see what masterpieces we created dur-ing the Term—we’d love to have you! Thank you for all your continued support. Miss Matterson Senior Class Teacher
