Bullying. No Way!
Friday 17 March has been designated as the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence – a day for schools, students and the community to say ‘Bullying. No Way!’ This day always serves as a reminder that we need to clearly understand what constitutes bullying, and what does not. The national definition for bullying for Australian schools says:
‘Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychologi-cal harm. It can involve individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons. Bullying can happen in person or online, and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert).
Bullying of any form or for any reason can have long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders.
Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.’
Behaviours that do not constitute bullying include:
Mutual arguments and disagreements (where there is no power imbalance)
Not liking someone or a single act of social rejection
One-off acts of meanness or spite
Isolated incidents of aggression, intimidation or violence
As a school, however, these conflicts are addressed and resolved. Bullying has three main features:
It involves a misuse of power in a relationship
It is ongoing and repeated, and
It involves behaviours that can cause harm
As parents your response is important so:
Listen calmly and get the full story
Reassure your child that they are not to blame
Ask your child what they want to do and what they want you to do
Learn some strategies to talk about with your child
Contact the school
Check in regularly with your child

Remember, the school can only be effective when instances are reported to us, and when we work together with parents to deal with it. As a school, our first action will always be to investigate the issue fully to support everyone involved, and to ensure that it is deemed bullying and not rude or mean behaviours which are different.

2017 Improvement Agenda
This year, our school’s strategic improvement agenda for 2017 focuses on three main pillars:
1) Systemic curriculum delivery: English
2) Expert Teaching Team
3) Effective Pedagogical Practices
In order to meet our targets regarding expert teaching team, we have outlined a strategic plan to utilise our staff expertise and resources available to achieve the best possible outcomes for student learning. This year we will: employ a Curriculum Implementation Officer to build teacher capability in implementing the
Australian Curriculum and differentiating the curriculum to meet individual needs, and to update whole school curriculum documents
develop teacher knowledge and understanding of the P-10 Australian Curriculum content descriptions and achievement standards by designing and supporting processes for robust monitoring and moderation
build teacher capability in gathering and using evidence to determine the different year-level curriculum some students require and to develop and successfully implement challenging but achievable Individual Curriculum Plans
All of these initiatives will be monitored throughout the year to ensure that our efforts and investment in teaching and learning practice are achieving the ongoing improvement in results that we are aiming for. Easter Morning Tea
All parents, friends and community members of Springbrook State School are warmly invited to join us for our annual Easter Hat Parade and morning tea. It will be held in our school grounds on Thursday 30th March, starting at 10:30am. For $5 you can be entertained and enjoy a hot cross bun with tea or coffee! We hope to see you there!
