Student Reports: Our teachers are currently working on mid-year reports for our students. At Donvale PS, we take reporting to parents very seriously and understand the importance of providing you with an accurate account of how your child is progressing academically, socially and emotionally. As such, the reporting process is quite lengthy and follows a logical timeline. Prior to beginning report writing teachers complete student assessments and compare evidence of learning as expected by our Victorian Curriculum. Evidence of learning consists of things that students say, make, write or do that communicate their understanding of concepts and mastery of skills. Teachers use this evidence to make judgments about student achievement along a continuum and enter this information into our assessment and reporting programs. As well as student learning being plotted on the continuum, comments are also added to further clarify or explain to parents what their children have achieved and possible areas for improvement or future learning. After a proof-reading process is completed, reports will be made available via Compass to Parents from Friday June 23 rd in readiness for the Parent / Teacher interviews scheduled for Tuesday 27 th and Wednesday 28 th June – with Wednesday being the late night interview day. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our teachers for their time, energy and effort in writing their student reports. It takes many hours of work most of which is done in the teacher’s own time. I know that the upcoming Queen’s Birthday long weekend will be spent by our most of our teachers writing student reports not to mention the many late nights they have already spent during the term. They are also continuing on with their full teaching program and are now beginning to plan for Term 3. We are very fortunate at Donvale PS to have dedicated teachers who always focus on the students ensuring that they provide the best learning opportunities for them. I am very grateful, as the Principal of Donvale PS, to have such a committed staff. I know our parent community will also agree. At Donvale PS, we know that working together with our parent community provides the students with greater opportunities for effective learning. Some helpful ideas for parents: With the ever growing use of computer technology by our children,

below are some suggestions / tips on how you can help protect your children and work to minimise

potential risks when they engage with online activities at home.

Get online with your child

Expect kids to behave well online

Model appropriate online behaviour

Praise kids for doing well online

Use current media stories to start the

conversation

Move kids out of their bedrooms with

technology – keep it public

Know who your kids are connecting with

online

Set rules and guidelines

Enforce consequences

Be their ‘friend’ on social media sites

Help them set their privacy settings correctly

Take a proactive and preventative stand

Be aware of strangeness more than strangers

Know and try the apps and websites your kids

are using

Don’t threaten to take away the technology.

Remember the world wide web is the biggest

public space your child will ever hang out in

Monitor your child’s online activities as best

you can

Start those difficult conversations today; it

may be difficult but it is far easier than dealing

with the worst case scenario after it happens.

Teach you kids to self-monitor online

Encourage them to speak up about online

misuse

Request both random and advanced access to

their online presence

Consider signing a family internet contract

Know their passwords

Educate yourself – don’t be a dinosaur

Don’t let the technology take over your

parenting.

GENERAL

On Wednesday the 7th of June Donvale Primary School participated in a garden planting session

accompanied by one of our parents Michelle Bishop and a representative from Bunning’s Warehouse also

with the name Michelle. Students from 3/4 G and the ‘Sustainability Program’ planted new vegetables such

as onions and a variety of herbs and also did a general tidy of the garden beds. The students were also

very lucky to receive a Bunning’s branded apron as a memento for the day. I would like to thank the

students for the great job that they did in the garden and also a big thank you must go to the two

Michelle’s for donating their time to come to the school and help out, it is very much appreciated.

At the office is a basket of lemons and some herbs from our garden, we ask for a coin donation if you

take any. This will go towards purchasing more seedlings, etc.

FOUNDATION’S EXCURSION TO CASEY SAFETY VILLAGE...

Casey Safety Village excursion

A great day was had by all Foundation children on Monday when we headed off on a bus to the Casey

Safety Village. For some of us it was the first time on a bus. For many, it was the best part of the day!! At

the village we learnt about fire safety, bike safety and how to be careful around roads. We all got to ride a

bike around the village navigating railway lines, roundabouts and pedestrians. As pedestrians, we had to be

careful of the bike riders whilst we searched for treasure. It was a fabulous day and thoroughly enjoyed by

all. Many thanks to the parents who helped out on the day.

Here are some of FHN’s recount of the excursion….

I went on the bus to Casey Safety Village and learnt about fire safety. By Leo

I ride my bike. I go very, very fast. By Zayd

I found all of the treasure. I loved the bus. I was first to go on the bike. By Maya

I went on a bike and I had fun. When I had fun I got excited at the same time. By Neve

The bike was fun. The bus was fun. I sat next to Mya on the bus. I found lots of

treasure. By Holly

Dear families,

This week children have enjoyed participating in activities based on the theme of “Respecting the

environment.” We have made a wonderful poster displaying nature sustainability which used in the

outside area to demonstrate our teamwork. It was really great to see the children feeling responsible to

participate in the activity which showed how important the environment is for them. The children were

engaged with the other activities; they used their creativity in painting and making things with recycled

materials. Next week we will get into varied activities around Integrating Literacy and Numeracy…

Remember bookings can be made right until 12pm the night before, or you can book on

the day by calling or leaving the text message but there will be an extra charge of $3.00

for bookings within 24 hours. If you’re ever stuck and would like your child to attend OSH

After School Care you can call me or leave a message on 0402 362 443 and I will get back

to you. For some reason if you need to cancel the child from attending the after school

care session you can cancel online if it is before 24 hours or leave a text message on the

program phone (0402362443/98422261) if it is on the day.

DONVALE BASKETBALL CLUB – News & Views!

Fantastic win for the U9 Dolphins against a team we'd lost to earlier in the season. Looking forward to

some great basketball in the finals.

U11 Devils - The boys had a tough game to finish off the season, unfortunately going down in the final

round. Good luck in the finals Devils!!

Dinosaurs - The Boys had a great game. Teamwork on both the offensive and defensive ends led to a

victory and an undefeated season. The boys look forward to the challenge of finals in a few weeks’ time.

There is no basketball this weekend - Saturday 10th June.

Semi Finals are on Saturday 17th June - game times will be out soon.

Host Families and Exchange Students A number of Exchange Students from Italy, France Germany, Japan,

Austria, Norway, Sweden and Finland are hoping to come here this July

and August because they wish to study here for a term, a semester or

even two (which would mean they would be with the family who

chooses them over Christmas and the summer holidays) with a family

that would like to experience the differences and similarities of having

an extra boy or girl aged 15-17 stay with them while they enjoy the

experience and feel it is worthwhile.

I’m hoping that’s you and your family, so if you’d like to give it a try for

a length of time, can afford an extra member of your family at

mealtimes and have a spare bed, share room or own, please call Klaus

Schumann on 0472 771 785. (There is no payment involved as these are

exchange students). Look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Klaus Schumann
