EDUCATION WEEK AT DONVALE PRIMARY SCHOOL
Open Day: This year’s Open Day was particularly pertinent as the school
celebrates its 50th year of outstanding education. Yesterday’s Open Day
continued in the traditions of our past and again proved to be a wonderful
celebration of our school and students. We had a terrific number of current
and new families attend throughout the day with the two school tours drawing
a large number of visitors. Mr McKinlay and myself very much enjoyed meeting
the many new families joining us for the tours. The school looked an absolute
treat as we proudly walked through the school watching our students showing
off their learning to their families and friends. Thank you to all our community
for supporting us yesterday, particularly all our parents (too many to mention
all) who came out in force to help in our classrooms, help with the BBQ during
the evening (Parents Association), help with the gardens, help with the tours
(School Councillors) and help with their big smiles! Thank you to all the staff
who, with the students, worked in planning and preparing for the day. The
classrooms and various displays around the school looked fantastic. The
Science Lab was in action and proved to be a very popular stopping point for
our visitors. A very big thank you, in particular, to Mrs Keep who was the key
organiser for the day. As always, the performances by our choirs, Marimba
band and dance groups were simply wonderful. Clearly, Donvale PS’s strong
reputation in working proudly together with its community continues.
Asphalting: The next round of asphalting works around the school has
commenced today. This work may take a week or so to complete so I ask
again for your consideration and cooperation whilst the workmen are at the
school. The pathways that are being developed will make movement around
the school far more convenient and safe for our community – they will most
certainly be welcome additions to our school’s landscape.

School Grant: A very big thank you to Michelle Bishop (parent) who recently applied for a school
grant from Aumann’s Landscaping and Gardening Centre…. and got it! The grant for $500 will be used
to spruce up our raised garden beds and their surrounds making this area of our school more
community focused and engaging for our students. We have lots of ideas but would be more than happy
to receive any suggestions from our community. We will certainly be discussing this with our students
and looking to gain feedback and ideas from them as to how they best see this money spent. Well done,
Michelle. We very much appreciate you doing this for our school.
Lego Club: The news is out that our school, through our Wellbeing and Chaplaincy program, is
developing a lunchtime Lego Club for our students – thank you to Mrs Olafsen (Wellbeing Officer and
School Chaplain). Upon hearing this news, Ryan Smith (Member for Warrandyte / Shadow Minister for
Industry) promptly responded by popping into the school earlier this week and presenting us with a
donation of Lego to support the program. A very big thank you to Mr Smith for the ongoing support he
provides to our school. I know that the Lego donated will certainly be well utilised by our very excited
and appreciative students.
Hope you’re having a wonderful week.
Kind Regards
Lena Clark

Olden Days’ Assembly:
At tomorrow afternoon’s assembly we will be turning back the clock and having a look at the Olden
Days’ assembly. Our Year 1 and 2 students are currently learning about the life of yesteryear in their
Integrated Unit titled ….’Then and Now’. If your child is in one of these Year Levels you may like to come
along and watch them in character as they go through some of the rituals expected of State School
students at the time.
Parenting Resilient Kids:
In this Snippets edition please find a flyer titled Parenting Resilient Kids which invites you to participate in
a research project by Monash University. The project is led by Dr Marie Yap and aims to evaluate
whether a new online parenting program can help empower parents and in turn build their child’s
resilience. This aligns perfectly with one of our four core school values. To find out more please see the
details at the bottom of the flyer. Feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss this initiative
further.
Peace Torch Run:
The International Peace Torch Run is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The torch is passing
through our area in June and we have been fortunate enough to be offered the opportunity for the
international runners to visit our school on Wednesday 21st June at 10.00 a.m. There will be a whole
school assembly at this time and a half hour presentation on the history and significance of the Peace
Torch. You are warmly invited to attend this special event.

SCIENCE CLUB NEWS...
Hello Parents
On Thursday we started a new Science initiative here at Donvale Primary School. Students from levels
3-6 came together at lunchtime to start the newly formed ‘Science Club.’ Some activities including making
a parachute, creating the unsinkable boat and analysing objects under our new USB microscopes.
What a wonderful session it was with students really taking an inquiry approach to learning and being
immersed in the activities throughout the entire session. Science at Donvale Primary School is great and
there is certainly more to come. Stay tuned!!!

Program Update
Dear families,
This week we focused on preparing for ‘The biggest afternoon tea’. It was fantastic for the children to research, explore and come up with
a range of different ideas. We were able to celebrate each other’s diversity and learn about the different taste in foods and much more.
Also, we had different Art activities such as painting and crafts along with a range of different active outdoor activities like 2 square and
tiggy ball.

Fantastic game from the U9 Dolphins this week resulting in a draw! The girls started the first half with poor defence, giving Biralee a good lead. The second half they came out determined to play better defence and they did, allowing us to get some points on the board. Well done girls you never gave up. Great game from Abby O and welcome back to Rosanna S.
U11 Daisies - the girls had an easy win this week against Milgate. Everyone contributed well resulting in fantastic teamwork. The girls kept the defensive pressure up all game and showed off their great passing skills. Lexi W showed wonderful confidence this week. Well done Daisies, keep up the good work!
Dinosaurs - The Boys came up against their toughest competition so far this season and put together a fantastic team game to come away with an impressive 11-8 win. Well done boys, great game!!
