LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT 201V5 INC.VIC.AUSTRALIA

WELCOME TO THE 2019-2020 LIONS YEAR- DG KUMAR SWAMINATHAN

The DG Team welcomes you to another Lions year 2019-2020. Together with my two able Vice Governors, Linda and Keith I take this opportunity to congratulate IPDG Laurie for his Leadership and his team for a job well-done during the past year which we hope to build upon in the years to come. A special thank you to Claudia who has been the shadow and personal assistant for Laurie and sacrificing many hours a day to see that he was well fed, hydrated and up to the task at hand. As they embark on a long holiday, we wish them safe travels and fun an relaxing experiences. Our team will work together as one with each one of us doing the best we possibly can for clubs and the District.

Despite our best endeavours and desire, the few of us cannot do everything and we therefore appreciate and need the support and assistance of every member in our District. We look forward to working with each of you to promote Lions activities and foundations to achieve positive outcomes for the District, Lions Australia and Lions International during the year. Thank you in advance for your commitment for 2019-2020 and beyond.

DG’s Theme - “Experience the Joy of Service”

I want each of you to be the voice of Lions. I want you to experience the joys of what we Lions do through our service to the less fortunate. This experience comes from seeing someone walk for the first time; from seeing a child recover from a deadly disease; from spending time with a person in need or from helping families struck by disaster whether it be drought, fire or flood. These are just some of the joyful moments we experience through our service efforts as Lions.

l have summarised our journey this year into three words: Enrich, Engage and Enjoy

Enrich – we need to enrich the lives of people we come in contact with. To do this we need to go to the grass roots level and identify real needs. This will allow us to make an impact as individuals and as an organisation.

Engage – we need to engage with our members in Clubs, Zones and the District. We also need to engage with other community and government organisations. Together we will add value to what we do, making our task of serving the community easier, allowing us to achieve a lot more.

Enjoy – we should not forget to enjoy ourselves and have some fun.

Our Goals for the year • Create positive member experiences for all Lions in our District • Have a net growth in membership - At least one member per club• One major project per club in the Global Causes of: Vision, Environment, Hunger, Diabetes, Childhood Cancer• Enjoy serving the community and be proud to be a Lion

Wishing you all a Year of Joy In ServiceKumar

District Governor Team Visits:

The District Governor Team Visit schedule is in the final stages of preparation and it is hoped that visits will commence late July and extend till the end of November.

Once the schedules have been finalised, Zone Chairs will commence the process of advising clubs in their zones of their allotted visit date.

Please note that it is logistically impossible to meet every club’s preferred date. Accordingly, it will be appreciated if every endeavour is made to ensure that the Team’s visit to your club is successful regardless of the date allocated for your visit.

Finally, on the 14th of July we say thank you for your leadership, guidance and dedication, to soon to be immediate past District Governor Laurie Cooper and his wife Lion Claudia. At the same time, we welcome our incoming District Governor Kumar Swaminathan and his lovely wife Sashi.

I also wish to thank my fellow cabinet members who have served the district with distinction and express a special warm welcome to our newbies joining the 2019/2020 District Cabinet.

Message - First Vice District Governor – Linda Johns

As we head into the new Lions year, new OPPORTUNITIES, new ADVENTURES, and new CHALLENGES will arise. As part of the District Governor Team visits I will meet many of you throughout the year and I look forward to hearing about your clubs successes and challenges.

Through challenge we learn and grow. Lionism is about us, as well as the service we provide. By embarking on adventures, facing the challenges and grasping the opportunities we grow as individuals, learn new skills and are better able to serve. Look after yourself, enjoy the Lions year and show the world what a great organization Lions is.

Linda Johns 1st Vice District Governor

We remain tantalisingly close to reaching the magic 1,250 which means we will no longer be ‘In Transition’ as a District.

Retention remains our big challenge, as despite great efforts around the District to recruit new members, we continue to lose more than we gain.

Melbourne Autism Lions Branch ClubOn a positive note, the membership numbers above do not include as yet 9 new members gained this week from the just formed Melbourne Autism Lions Branch Club, sponsored by Box Hill Lions Club.

We believe this Branch Club has great potential to grow and be Chartered in its own right in the not too distant future. Special thanks to PDG Pat Mills for being the driving force behind this new Club.

Great service demands balance. It takes the equal efforts of many to improve the world. Every person’s perspective is required for our success.

I will lead our Lion family with the same wisdom my mother instilled in our family: if you work harder than you’re expected to, then extraordinary results will come.

Brief Introduction of International President Dr Jung-Yul Choi

Lions Clubs International President for 2019-20 is Dr Jung-Yul Choi of the Busan Jae-il Lions Club in the Republic of Korea. He has been a member for over 40 years. His career and life have been defined by the work ethic instilled in him as a child, along with a passion to bridge differences, connect people and em-brace diversity to create harmony for all.

As a young lieutenant in the military, he worked as a translator for the US Army, empowering a greater understanding of other nations for his fellow soldiers and his country. As a business owner, he worked across borders, establishing trust internationally. As a husband and a father, he has been loving, strong and devoted. And now, as International President, Dr Jung-Yul Choi is ready to help Lions come together in a greater unity than ever before.

Hard work. The importance of giving your all with consistency, vision and passion. Never allowing some-one in crisis to go unserved. These are values passed on a by a loving mother to her son – 102nd Interna-tional President, Dr Jung-Yul Choi.

We Serve all people in all places. Lions are a shining ex-ample to the world of the good that can be accomplished by uniting in harmony. We are known for our strength and ability to help others – and this is only accomplished Through Diversity.

Diversity bridges all divides creating harmony through service.

Each of our 1.5 million members is different. These very differences are what make us strong. They make us great. They make us Lions.

Introducing 102nd International PresidentDr Jung-Yul Choi - 2019 – 2020

District Leadership Training – August/September 2019

As Lions, we all like to serve and give back to our communities, and we have great fun doing this. But among the many benefits of being a Lion, is the opportunity for leadership training and development. Of course, we provide these opportunities to ensure a pipeline of future Lions’ leaders, but they can be of amazing value to participants in their personal and professional life.

We are pleased to announce a new District Leadership program called “Envision, Empower and Enable - A New Leadership Program for District Club Officers, Lions & Leos”. It is a segue between Laurie Cooper’s year of “Navigating Towards the Future” and Kumar Swaminathan’s “Enrich, Engage & Enjoy – Experience the Joy of Service”. We hope participants will enjoy and benefit, not only by the learning and activities we will be undertaking, but also by meeting and engaging with other Lions and Leo’s from across the district!!

It is a 2-day program with the two days separated by two or three weeks. The first program will take place on Sunday August 18th (Day 1) & Sunday September 1st (Day 2). It will take place at the Box Hill Lions Hall, 1230 Riversdale Road, Box Hill South. There is no real cost, to you or your club, for participating in the program, but we will be asking for a contribution of $20 to pay for lunch/drinks – hopefully your club will be happy to pay this.

Who can attend? While the program is targeted towards Lions who are new to Club Officer positions, it is equally applicable to Lions leading service projects, and new Lions. Any Lion is welcome to apply for, and benefit from, the program.

If you would like more information, or to express interest, please email or call me – Owen Price, [email protected], M: 0428 588 373. I will send you a full outline of the program. We will be repeating this program at other locations in the district over the coming months – please express your interest in these, and I will ensure you are notified when they have been scheduled.

Please note that this leadership program is a first step and complementary to the excellent residential leadership institutes run by LCI – it is not a replacement. Consider applying for these after attending this program.

Owen Price – District Training

Welcomed among the thirty-five members and guests at Broadford Lions Changeover Dinner on 3 June was special guest PJ with her proud owner, Anne Clipperton. It was a delight to have them there and to show visiting Lions and others just what a boon a hearing dog can be to its owner.

PJ is the second ALHD which the club has accepted in the past twelve months. It took some juggling among members to do the sound checks three times a week. For some time both dogs were being checked on the same day!

Anne has been an enthusiastic promoter of the ALHD program – taking part in the Lions Awareness Day by bringing PJ to a local supermarket where Broadford Lions had set up their table with information about Lions International.

The cold evening was forgotten in the warmth of the fellowship between fellow Lions and their guests who enjoyed a delicious three course meal. Appreciation certificates and cheques were presented to various groups throughout the meeting and were well received.

Then Second VDG, Linda Johns, installed the new office bearers with due ceremony and a bit of fun.

In 2018, Bunnings Cafes sold almost 46,000 mini-cakes in November and December – a fantastic effort.

The profits produced has helped to support some National Lions Projects over the past 3 years. This includes:

Need for Feed (Drought Aid) - $16,500Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation - $15,000Australian Lions Men’s Prostate Cancer Research Foundation - $15,000Lions Hearing Dogs - $6,000BlazeAid - $5,000 (replacing fences after fire and floods)

Lions Licola Wilderness Park - $20,000 (a Lions Victoria and Southern NSW Lions combined Project providing world class wilderness experiences for needy and at-risk kids and teens). The Diamond Valley Lions Club, on behalf of Lions International Australia, would like to thank all of the Bunnings Cafes staff and management for promoting and selling the Lions 80gm mini-cakes in the November/December period in 2018. This has provided great publicity for Lions and much needed dollars to support Lions projects.

Additionally, Diamond Valley Lions sold almost $19,000 of cakes locally ($1350 in 2016!!) for a total of about $109,000 for 2018.

FAREWELL TO A GREAT FOUNDATIONFor more than 10 years, this Foundation has been providing technology to people who are blind or vision impaired through the use of assistive/adaptive technology. Started by Chelsea District Lions Club, District 201V5 adopted this project and supported it when it became a Category B multiple district project in 2010. (Australia wide project).

We estimate that the Foundation, with help from Lions Clubs all around Australia, have provided approximately 1000 pieces of equipment, enabling many people, including carers, a measure of independence.

Now that the NDIS has fully rolled out across Australia, this service is no longer required. A “bitter-sweet moment”, but this is a great thing as more people will gain access to the technology and support that is needed.

For Lions Clubs, it just means that we move onto the next task of serving and helping our communities on a local, national and international level.

Thanks to all the people we have been associated with over the past 10 years, including the founder Bernie, our life member Jeff Underhill, Capalaba Lions Club in Queensland, our past board members, Blindness Agencies, Occupational Therapists, the Blind Community, GS1, Insignia, En-Vision America and our individual Lions Clubs who sponsored and helped many recipients.

NUNAWADING LIONSPROVIDING COMMUNITY GRANTS

The Nunawading Lions introduced Community Grants this year. The project involved 3 grants of up to $2,000 each to organisations in our local Whitehorse community. It was a challenging task selecting the winning three out of the applications received. The winners were invited to a club meeting where they informed the members about their organisation, their goals and more specifically how the grant would benefit their programs.

All members were impressed by the winners and the positive impact they are having on our local community and Nunawading Lions was proud to be able to assist.

Having Lions provide the new bus means that Wavecare can utilise their limited funds by investing in more services by expanded programs and increased counselling capacity.

With the total cost of the bus being just under $60,000, which included some necessary modifications and the cost of the signage on the bus. This vehicle will now be seen as a large moveable billboard around City of Monash & other nearby locations promoting not only Wavecare and its services but also showing just how generous and supportive Lions Clubs can be.

Our cash funding was assisted by a $14,000 trade-in on the old bus (originally provided by Wheelers Hill) and a grant of $15,000 from Australian Lions Foundation Ltd.

PDG John Odgers, Lions Club of Wheelers Hill

The Lions Club of Wheelers Hill made a decision a few years ago to start setting aside funds for a major Community Project. A decision was made to replace a 12-year-old minibus (previously supplied by us) that was being used by Wavecare Counselling & Community Support Service to assist them and other local associated groups with their transport needs.

On behalf of our members, our board and our community - thanks for all of your hard work Chris.

The Lions Club of Wantirna recently awarded the prestigious Melvin Jones Award to one of our most dedicated Lions – Christine (Chris) Ellis. Photo left shows DG Laurie Cooper presenting the award.

Chris has been a very active member of our club for many years and pays particular attention to our mints and cakes.

Chris and her family are a very community focused unit, and this shows in the way that Chris just gets on with things, spending an incalculable number of hours checking on our mint and mini cake outlets.

Our home in Verdon South Australia is getting extensions and a fabulous make-over.

This is the exciting news released at MD Convention at Geelong early in May, and below are the Artists images of the planned expansion showing the enlargement and renovation of the existing administration building and the overall extensions to Training areas, state-of-the-art Kennel complex to house 50 dogs and two purpose built training houses.

Alterations will be completed in 4 stages allowing staff to continue working, training and delivering dogs with minimum disruption to routine. Stage 1 - the Administration Building is expected to commence in 2021 – and total project completion five years from that date.

The Lions Clubs of Australia will not be asked to fund this building project, we are sourcing Corporate Funding, however, if any Clubs choose to make a donation to the Building Project, it would be gratefully accepted. Our Annual Appeal will still be conducted early each year because we still need the support and donations from your Clubs to finance the acquisition and training of the dogs.

More news next month….

Lionsonoz in Action

While travelling through Southern Queensland in June, Australian Lionsonoz member Lion Joe Vella and his wife Patricia met up with Moreton Bay Lions Club President, Lion John Wearne Whose Club was conducting a Garage Sale at the Local Church at Wynnum.Of course Lion Joe, always willing to assist “main stream” Lions Clubs in their projects immediately offered his services and spent some time meeting the local people and the local Lions club members while helping to raise funds through the sale of a great variety of goods on offer. Australian Lionsonoz members are always willing to assist the local Lions Club in the town in which they find themselves. Lionsonoz does not conduct their own projects and by offering their services they still live up to the Lions motto “We Serve”.

TATURA LIONS WITH ALF - DONATE 4 HIGH TECH HOSPITAL BEDS

Tatura Lions have just presented a cheque for $15,220 to the Tatura Hospital to purchase 4 new high tech beds. This donation was made possible due to funds raised at the Tatura Lions TatFest 2019 (annual festival). Tatura Lions raised $7,110 which was then generously matched by the Australian Lions Foundation.

The new beds replace 19 years old equipment and will provide greater comfort for patients and much easier operation for staff. Tatura Hospital has been running an appeal to raise funds to replace all of their beds for the last 2 years and our donation completes the appeal. The hospital will install the new beds in August 2019.

About TatFestTatura Lions commenced running TatFest in 2017 as a festival designed to attract families and people of all ages to a day of food, fun, amusements, and entertainment. Held on the first Sunday in March, it is open from 10am to 4pm, and free to enter. This year we had train rides, zorb balls, abseiling tower, sumo wrestling, tennis ace speed measurement, bouncing castle, and face painting for the young-at-heart, a busker competition throughout the day, and food and drinks available all day. Lions charge for the use of most of the amusements.

Student Artwork - We also supply one art canvas per class for the local state primary school. The students in each class create an art work that is displayed and offered for sale by silent auction at TatFest. The takings are spit between the school and TatFest.

This year’s highlight of the day was the CFA, Ambulance Victoria, and the SES demonstrating how they would treat and rescue a patient with suspected back injuries. Amazing just how easily they removed the top of the car an old wreck off course!).

TatFest 2019 was on a day when the temperature exceeded 39oC, and as a result attendance and taking were down considerably. Also weather related – the main attraction, an RAAF Hot Air Balloon ride could not go ahead due to winds.

This event costs about $18,000 to run and is only possible with very generous sponsorship from local and district businesses. We are particularly indebted to Shepparton News who provided advertising and editorials free of charge, to our Gold sponsor Tatura Milk (a subsidiary of Bega Cheese), Greater Shepparton City Council, and Prime 7. Part of our advertising and promotion to sponsors was a commitment to donate any profit to the bed appeal for the local hospital. We very much appreciate the assistance we receive from nearby Lions Clubs, from Rotary, and from volunteers on the day.The hospital runs hospital Sunday each year, inviting local residents to visit the hospital This year hospital Sunday was on June 16th and we took the opportunity to present the cheque to the hospital.
