1 Newsletter No. 18 - Term 2 Week 8 Thursday 12 th June 2014 From the Principal…. 3-Way Conferences Next Friday 20 th June, your child’s report will be sent home in an envelope addressed to parents of the child. In the last week of term, 3-Way Conferences will be held to discuss the report and set goals for next term. 15 minutes has been allocated for each conference, however, if you wish to speak to the teacher for longer then you are able to book in another time early next term. We do ask that every family make a time to come to a conference with your child. Bookings for the conferences can be made online with instructions sent home in a note with your eldest child yesterday. Booking for interviews will be open from Friday 13 th June and will close at 5pm on Friday 20 th June. There will also be a link from our Facebook page. VISITORS As mentioned in last week’s newsletter we had a school full of visitors on Tuesday. Teachers from Rolling Hills Primary School and Billanook Primary School visited to view our programs in ICT and Challenge Based Learning. We also had a visit from Mrs Rashmi Mishri, who is Principal of a school in New Delhi. It was so interesting to hear about her school and at recess our staff was able to gain an insight into another stream of education in India. Rashmi’s school has a school population of 3,000 children from Prep to Year 12. The primary aged children begin school at 6.45 in the morning and finish school at 1.30 in the afternoon. When they go home their teachers go home and a whole new set of teachers, office staff and students start work at the school. Their school day finishes at 6.30 at night. There were approximately 1500 students in each section. Quite a change from our Kalinda school day! Rashmi is there on site for both shifts and she actually lives next door to the school. Being a school principal in India also involves working with the many issues of India and trying to educate a huge population to a very high standard. Education is extremely well-respected as a profession and teachers have to be totally committed to their work, and a very long day. I will be attending an Asian Education Foundation Conference next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I was very pleased to hear that Rashmi will also be attending the conference so I will be able to have a few more discussions with her about international education. TOURS I am still conducting tours of the school for potential Prep enrolments for 2015. The end of this term is coming up very fast and we would really like all enrolments in by the end of this term so that we can plan for next year. This applies to all schools in the Maroondah Network. GAIL POLLARD PRINCIPAL A reminder that all primary schools in Maroondah ask that students are enrolled for 2015 before the end of this term, Friday 27 th June. This includes families with children already at Kalinda and who have Preppies for 2015. ENROL NOW FOR 2015

Canteen News

Soup is coming!

Bowls of soup now available on Thursdays in the Multi-Purpose Room. Choices include: Chicken & Sweet Corn, Tomato & Vegetable and Pumpkin. Price of $4.50 includes a buttered bread roll and can be ordered on your lunch order bag. We have had quite a few lunch orders with insufficient funds included or menu items from the Summer Menu. Can you please ensure you have the current menu (Winter) on hand This is on our website, or available from the office. In regards to insufficient funds, I will be sending home a note with the amount owing and if you could arrange to drop the money in at the office or canteen, it would be greatly appreciated. We realise that these amounts are quite small, but over the year they do add up and can mean the difference of whether or not we maintain this wonderful service to our children. Again, I would like to thank all our wonderful helpers, without you, we would not have a smooth running canteen.

Canteen will be closed on the last day of term – Friday 27th June - for cleaning. (Last day for sales is Thursday 26

With the recent unveiling of the most recent federal budget came the unfortunate news that the Australian Sports

Commission’s Active After-School Communities program will not continue beyond December 31, 2014. My contacts

within the Australian Sports Commission are confident that Kalinda Primary School will be well-served by its

replacement program: the ‘Sporting School’s Initiative’, however – for the time-being - there are more questions

than answers about the Sporting School’s Program. I will keep you informed as information comes to hand.

SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA MAROONDAH DIVISION CROSS-COUNTRY CARNIVAL (APOLOGY!): My

sincere apologies to Jamie W of 34R who – by finishing 11th

in his District race - also achieved selection to

represent the Ringwood North District at the Maroondah Division level of competition which was held on

Tuesday (June 10) at Yarra Glen Racecourse. All up, Kalinda had 10 students compete at the Division level:

Callum C. (34R), Ashton M (34P), Jessica B (34P), Matilda B (34A), Judson C (56O), Connor B (56M), Shanae A

(56M), Chloe W (56O), Joel R (56M) and Jamie. All of those students participated exceptionally well, with a few

even achieving strong enough results to progress them to the next tier of competition. So…

SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA EASTERN METROPOLITAN REGION CROSS-COUNTRY CARNIVAL: Kalinda

Primary School congratulates the following students on achieving selection to represent the Manningham and

Maroondah Divisions at the Region level of competition: Callum C. (34R), Joel R (56M) and Judson C. (56O). This

event will take place at Yarra Glen racecourse on June 17. The EMR events in which Kalinda students are involved

commence at 12:50PM.

LEVEL 4 WINTER-SCHOOL SPORT: Continues this Friday afternoon (weather permitting). This week’s opponent

is Ringwood North Primary School (Oban Road, Ringwood North). See the school’s Facebook page, or the website

for all venue details. The bus will depart for teams playing away at 1:00pm sharp, and will return to Kalinda at

3:00pm. Game play is generally from 1:30pm until 2:30pm.

WHAT’S ON IN TERM 3? House and District Track & Field (L3&4), Basketball Victoria Junior & Senior Hoop-time

OSHClub News Before School / After School Care Program Term 2 – Week 8

Program Update

Hello Everyone, This week we are getting our science on! We have a range of experiments organised for the kids. From erupting eggs to exploding balloons. The science project we are most excited about is the bouncy egg experiment, where we make eggs bounce! We will use vinegar to dissolve the eggshell. This happens because vinegar contains an acid called acetic acid, which reacts with the high calcium content of the eggshell. By engaging in this week’s science projects, your kids will be further developing a range of skills and processes such as problem solving, enquiry and experimentation. Most importantly they will be having loads of fun investigating and exploring reactions! Next week will be Harry Potter week. The kids have devised a schedule that includes sorting, quidditch, potions and divination. Here at OSHClub we want your kids to enjoy their time with us. On top of our weekly activities schedule we also offer a variety of other activities for the kids to engage in. These include hama beads, dominos, lego, imaginative arts and crafts, outdoor play, board games, reading and much more. Thanks Jessica Armstrong Co-ordinator

RECIPE OF THE WEEK!

Lemon delicious is a magic dessert which makes its own sauce. The mixture separates into 2

layers during the cooking to give you a light, spongy top & a lemony sauce underneath – it was

like a big soufflé! It can also be made in 4 dishes of about 3/4 cup capacity each, cooking time

for these 4 individual puddings will be about 25 minutes. Dessert must be made and then served

immediately.

Serves: 4

Cooking time: 45 minutes

Light ‘n’ Luscious Lemon Delicious

What you need: 3 eggs

½ cup castor sugar

250ml (1 cup) milk

1 tablespoon self-raising flour

125ml (½) cup lemon juice

Separate eggs; place whites and yolks into 2 separate small bowls. Add sugar to egg yolks in small bowl, beat with electric mixer until thick and creamy. Gradually beat in milk on low speed, then the sifted flour and lemon juice. Pour into large bowl. Beat egg whites in small bowl with electric mixer until soft peaks form. Fold into egg yolk mixture in 2 batches. Use a plastic spatula for this; do not stir or beat or you will deflate the mixture. Mixture will look a bit curdled, but this is correct. Pour mixture into deep ovenproof dish (4 cup capacity). Stand dish in baking dish; add enough boiling water to baking dish to come halfway-up side of ovenproof dish. Bake at 180°C for about 45 minutes or until firm to touch. Sprinkle with a little sifted icing sugar, if desired. WENDY McLAUGHLAN KALINDA CHEF

to stop! We already have quite a few kids booked in. You can ring for a prebooking, which will hold a space for 21
