PRINCIPAL REPORT

LAST WEEKS

As I move into my final weeks at Warranwood I have been pondering all the things we do well and the success-

es we have had. I have also been spending time talking to other principals and teachers. We are very fortunate

at Warranwood to have such a strong vibrant community focussed on the needs of our students. We are able to

do that very successfully because of our focus on wellbeing – the way our RUIn program and logo has crept into

daily life at the school makes me smile every time. Of course there are many schools which run great programs

and have fantastic students and relationships, but this is OURS and we are proud. People ask what I take away

from so many years as Principal, and the answer is simple – the importance of relationships!

As Assistant Principal, Shane will step up into the Principal role from 11 September until the end of the year. We

have been working together on many things over this year to support him into moving into this role. I know that

he will be strongly supported by regional staff and local schools, but mainly by our fantastic staff!

I am so pleased that two of the final things happening before I retire are

the absolutely AMAZING River of Voices project. Every day I walk around our courtyard and

delight in the new additions! The student work is great, and has been enhanced by the talent

of Rob Scholten, our artist in residence. Again, congratulations to Jeenah for exceptional or-

ganisation of the project.

the visit from Lilyvale Primary School. This week has been a great celebration of inter-

national collaboration, which has been embraced by everyone her at Warranwood and

at Kalinda. Students and staff from all three schools have benefitted by the visit. I was

also able to introduce the Lilyvale Principal, Mike Akubo, to staff at Melbourne Poly-

technic to support the establishment of a relationship between them and some of the

other aspects of the Lilyvale Academy. It has also been very good to repay the hospi-

tality we have experienced in Japan over the last few years.

DOGS IN SCHOOL YARD!!

gates. This policy is mainly for the safety of our younger students and the many pre-schoolers we have at the

school on a daily basis. We ask that you respect this policy and ensure dogs are left at home or tied up outside

RIVER of VOICES It has been an exciting week with so many things happening around our school. Our River of Voices artwork is really taking shape and making our courtyard come alive with vibrant colour and shape. The grand opening evening on Thursday 7 September will be a great celebration of the amazing creative work inspired by Jeenah and Rob, our stu-dents, staff and community. I can’t wait to see the finished product! LILYVALE VISIT Our Japanese friends form Lilyvale have settled so well into their host families and have been busy making presenta-tions to all classes throughout our school, sharing cultural stories and information about Japan with our students. The visit provides our students throughout the school with rich opportunities for building meaningful cultural understandings and improving their skill and abilities with the Japanese language. 5 MOBILE PHONE RULES FOR KIDS Essential tips to help keep the peace from Caroline Knorr Senior Parenting Editor | Mom of one Whether your kid is heading to school toting a brand-new device or is already a mobile-phone pro, it's important to make sure everyone is on the same page about what "responsible use" means. As with any kind of boundary setting, these conversations can be tense. Fortunately, there are only five rules for them to remember and one for you, to show that you're all in this together. (Tweens and teens can also play our animated, interactive Digital Compass game to pick up digital-citizen skills.) Here are our key guidelines for mobile-phone carrying kids: 1. Respect the school's rules. Abusing this privilege could jeopardize your freedom. Your parents could rightly suspend your phone use. 2. Pick up when it's Mum or Dad. Ugh, it's the parents calling again. Well, guess who's paying for your phone? When your mum, dad, or caregiver call, it's probably very important, so don't send it to voicemail. 3. Ask permission before downloading anything. Even if you have your own app store ac-count, get sign off on any apps you download. If something has in-app purchases, those costs could wind up on your parents' bill so they need to know what extra charges a download may incur. They also need to make sure it's age appropriate and reasonably good for you. 4. Don't flaunt it. Owning a mobile phone is a privilege that not every kid has access to. It's OK to be proud of your phone -- it's an expensive piece of equipment for which you've been given responsibility but showing off could make other people feel bad. Also, it could get stolen. 5. Use your phone for good, not evil. You'll see all kinds of misbehavior and mischief regard-ing phones. Set an example for others by being respectful and responsible with yours. Ask permis-sion before taking someone's picture. Take a moment to consider whether a text or video could hurt, annoy, or embarrass someone else. Turn off the phone when you're supposed to. Don't let the phone be more important than someone standing right in front of you. And here's our essential rule for parents: Parents — don't text your kid during the school day. Unless it's a real emergency -- like, you're going to the hospital -- resist the urge to text your kid during the school day. Kids have sur-vived for many, many years without talking to their parents while they're at school -- and they need to be allowed independence. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/blog/5-back-to-school-cell-phone-rules-for-kids

2017 Woolworths Earn & Learn Program—26 July to 19 September We are excited to be taking part in the 2017 Woolworths Earn & Learn program. During the previous cam-paign, we were able to purchase some great resources with the points we earned, thanks to you. Collect your sticks at Woolworths and for every $10 you spend (excluding the purchase of tobacco, liquor and gift cards), you will receive a sticker. Your children can then place them on the special sticker sheet. Once completed, bring it to school to pop it in the box in the foyer of the Office. The more points we earn, the more we can redeem from a choice of over 10,000 educational resources including mathematics and English resources, art & crafts materials and much, much more!
