But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people." Luke 2:10

Although far from being an angel, I want to focus on a real good news story here at the College which has benefited students, staff, families and the community as a whole both financially and from an ecologically sustainable viewpoint.

Since the inception and commissioning of the College’s 80kWp Solar Photovoltaic System in October 2014, the 330 solar panels have produced 346 kWh of energy and saved 211 tonnes of carbon emissions. Whilst these figures sound impressive, they can furthermore be doubled as a direct consequence of lighting upgrades to LED undertaken throughout the College over the past 3 years. The upshot of all these and other initiatives implemented by students, teachers and maintenance staff has been a reduction in energy costs exceeding 70% in some months, which in today’s environment of ever increasing electricity costs is a proud achievement and credit to all involved. These innovative measures have put the College at the forefront in educational circles and businesses alike. Cost savings are always welcomed when operating on a tight budget, meaning more funds can be diverted to educational delivery and student outcomes.

It is also hoped that examples of some of these measures put in place are taken home to families and general community broadening the beneficial effects to the environment. I am also aware that a draft College sustainability policy is being developed along with an adjoining Strategic Plan which will keep this important area high on agendas in the future.

prayer points

family talking pointsEvery now and again our Chapel Program at Cornerstone utilises the gifts and talents of Youtube, and in particular, the gifts and talents of those who bring a great message via the social media giant.

Last week was one such occasion as our chapel audience was introduced to Michael Jr, a witty American comedian whose reputation is gaining tread as one of the

funniest in the business. He has appeared on many of the mainstream night-time talk shows, demonstrating his unique and personable style of comedy.

Further to his growing success as a comedian is Michael Jr’s own personal faith journey, and the way in which his humour allows him to share his own story in a style that people enjoy.

In chapel we were able to use some extracts from his stand up performance recently. While he shared some humorous perceptions on all kinds of human activities, it was his perception of his place as a father that came through loudest and clearest.

In particular, he made comment about the birth of his daughter, and the very first interactions he was able to have with her in the minutes after she was born. He even showed videotape of what happened, as he spoke to her gently and lovingly, the sound of his voice settling her and providing obvious comfort in her first moments of life.

He also showed a second clip, inviting his audience to watch for what happens as he tells his little girl that he loves her. His point is very well made, as his daughter turns her head to him, stops crying, and opens her eyes for the very first time to look at her dad.

Michael Jr’s experience is much like our own experience, in that the voice of those who love us the most will naturally provide the greatest peace for us. In so many ways, our lives are just like when we were born – often vulnerable and uncertain. The voice of the Father, as Michael Jr puts it, will be there when we listen out for it. That is God’s own promise, and lay at the heart of Michael Jr’s performance.

I pray our students were able to draw this idea from the message, and that God’s love is the one thing he hopes we will hear from his voice.

Screenagers, Wallis CinemaThis film tackles the biggest parenting problem of our time; how technology impacts development. SCREENAGERS offers solutions for adults to empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.

Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen timefriction she knew all too well.

In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists.

careers

Year 11 Career Awareness ProgramThe second phase of our new Year 11 Career Awareness Program will take place Thursday and Friday of next week, with Year 11s travelling to the City on Thursday, 29 June. The students will

visit a range of tertiary institutions, employers, and training providers to learn more about the different opportunities available to them and familiarise themselves with the different campuses and locations. This will be followed by the students

splitting into groups to visit either Flinders University or a series of Vocational/Trade options on the Friday. Letters about these events went home with Year 11 students this week. A follow up report on this event will appear in the next edition of ‘connections’.

VET in 2018For students and families considering Vocational Pathway options in 2018, it can be useful to start having those discussions early, before subject selection in Term 3. This can help clear up any questions or concerns that parents

may have regarding these courses, which can be particularly difficult to address in the time allocated for subject selection appointments. If students and parents wish to discuss the possible options for VET courses, our online PTO Booking system will be made available to families at the start of next term so they can make an appointment with a member of the Careers Team, or alternatively families can contact Mr Anthony Doyle directly on 8398 6019 or [email protected].

Student Achievement - State History Prize Winner Congratulations is extended to Lucy Fielke on her recent win in ‘The 2017 Premier’s ANZAC Spirit School Prize’. The competition provides the opportunity for young South Australians to examine and empathise with the remarkable sacrifices of Australian service men and women in the Great War of 1914-18.

Lucy researched the nurse Ada Rose Alleyn and presented an engaging, well researched and empathetic essay that obviously caught the judge’s eye!

As an award winner, Lucy has been invited to participate in the State Government’s fully funded study tour to Vietnam in October 2017. The costs of travel, accommodation and meals are covered during the eleven day escorted tour to Vietnam.

This is the first year Cornerstone has participated in this competition. Year 9 Semester 1 History students (approximately 90 students), all undertook the same task with varying degrees of success. As a school, we then had to select our best five and send them to the competition panel. Following Lucy being shortlisted, she then undertook an interview process with a judging panel and was notified of her success. Congratulations Lucy!

12 German Film and Raclette EveningIn Week 7 our Year 12 German students enjoyed watching a German film and sharing a Raclette dinner after school. Raclette is a slow meal cooked at the table in a purpose-built grill. The key ingredient is cheese (Raclette is a type of cheese) which is melted over potatoes, bread, vegetables, sliced meats etc. This meal originated in Switzerland and is commonly enjoyed in European countries during the winter. The delicious food, warm ambience and great company inspired the Year 12s to speak lots of German, both during the meal and while playing a German board game afterwards.

Science and Engineering ChallengeOn Wednesday 14 June Cornerstone College was represented by a team of 22 Year 9 and 10 students competing in the national Science and Engineering Challenge at UniSA, Mawson Lakes with around 200 students from eight different schools.

This event is presented by the University of Newcastle and is an opportunity for students to participate in a range of science and engineering activities. These included bridge building, constructing flat pack furniture and earthquake-proof towers, problem-solving electrical power grid distribution, decoding alpha-numeric communication strategies and building bionic hands and a space buggy fit for the bumpy Martian terrain.

The success and ingenuity of the solutions and models were assessed against different criteria and a points-based system that contributed to a combined school tally. A lot of fun was had by the students throughout the day and their efforts were rewarded on the score board – the Cornerstone College team won the competition and will go on to compete in the State Final in August.

Student reflections from the day include:

The Science and Engineering Challenge was a great day because it was a chance to employ our creative and scientific knowledge. Through teamwork, we were able to contribute our individual skills that resulted in success - winning the competition! I had the opportunity to work alongside students from other South Australian schools and got to know other Cornerstone students better. Madison Anning

It was a great day because everyone got the opportunity to try something new and do their best. James Heinrich

We were able to work with a group of people and work through challenges that we wouldn’t get to experience otherwise. My group just wanted to have fun and together we were capable of working through the problems.Victoria Beare

The Science faculty would like to express sincere appreciation to Southern Cross Cleaning for their sponsorship to cover the competition entry fee.

Year 12 Christian Living RetreatAt the end of Week 5 (effectively the mid-point of the Year 12 study year) our current Year 12 students were privileged to participate in a two-day retreat to Dzintari Campsite at Normanville. This break from regular routine gave the students a chance to reflect, relax and re-focus through participating in a number of activities as they shared time with peers and staff. Particular highlights included the warm fuzzies written and received by all, some words of wisdom from four immediate old scholars, and the presentation of the 2017 commemorative jumpers.

Year 7 Boys Knockout SoccerCornerstone 2 Burnside Primary 1

Oh my, oh my! What a game! This was not just any soccer match; this a compelling Herculean contest between two highly talented sides. There was also a touch of nostalgia for me as the Cornerstone back four reminded me of those heady days at Highbury where, during the 90s the Arsenal back four dominated and were the foundation for Arsenal winning the ‘double’ in ’98 (league and FA cup).

Our defensive ‘controllers’ were Tyler Weyland and Damian Smallridge who held the centre with all the valour of the legendary Horatius at the Sublician bridge. They were magnificently supported on the left and right flanks by Josh Liebelt, Josh Rayner and Zane Wilson-Crowe. The selection of Josh Liebelt at left back was, if I may be so indulgent, a managerial master-stroke! What he lacked in positional play he more than made up for with commitment and grit. And our defence had to be gritty as Burnside swamped our penalty box with four and sometimes five attackers. Once again, our ‘keeper, James ‘the ice-man’ Bagley, bravely and skilfully saved us sometimes having to dive at the feet of a marauding Burnside forward. Our midfield

quartet were terrific. Jye Martin, particularly in the first half, was highly effective and kept us going forward. Kyle Fenlon, Dan McArthur and Xavier Kell linked well and ensured that our strike force of Will Monaghan and Will Smith were provided with plenty of ball.

Will Smith had his best game and showed a finesse of touch and an awareness for space that was highly impressive, but it was Will Monaghan who opened the scoring with a well-taken goal, pouncing on a fumble from the Burnside ‘keeper. To keep the pulse rate pumping, Burnside levelled soon after half-time (so much for my motivational team talk!). Their number 10 was proving to be a handful: skilful and intelligent (reminded me of Luka Modric the Real Madrid midfielder). It looked as though extra-time would be necessary to separate these teams, but then Will Smith latched on to an exquisite pass from Dan McArthur to slot the ball past our opponent’s ‘keeper and give us the victory!

And so, we march on to round four. Let us hope the Arsenal analogy continues: they won this year’s FA Cup!

Year 8/9 Knockout NetballOn 6 June, the team headed to Heathfield High School to face two tough games in one day. The first game was against Heathfield, who had a tough defence line up that showed that the girls had their work cut out for them. The first half of the game was incredibly intense and left the scores almost even at half time. The girls fired up during the second half due to wise words from captain, Alicia Harford, and managed an eight goal win.

When the Scotch College girls walked into the gym before the start of the second game, we knew it was going to be tough. Their incredibly tall shooters soon proved that the defence had to work hard and the midcourt had to be very quick on their feet as they moved the ball swiftly through the midcourt. By the end of a very tough first half the girls were down by a considerable amount. During the second half the girls managed to pick up their pace, again due to the motivational spirit and encouragement coming from the bench. However we were unable to regain the necessary goals and went down by fourteen.

A huge well done to the entire team and their efforts during the day.

Year 10 Girls Knockout Netball

Year 10 Knockout VolleyballOn Wednesday, 14 June, the Year 10 Girls Knockout Volleyball team went to the Mars Sporting Complex to compete in a round-robin competition. After a quick warm-up the girls headed into their first game with high spirits. The team won 2-1 against Parafield Gardens. The next two games against Renmark and Loxton were tough, but the girls persisted and learnt a lot. Although the team didn’t win the final game against Paralowie, the sets were close.

Overall, the girls represented the College very well and had an enjoyable day. The team consisted of – Grace Crowder, Paxton Davis-Mattner, Lily Hannaford, Bethia Holton, Sarah Howe, Suzie Koch, Abby Naughton and Vy Zastera.

Mrs Bec SalinasKnockout Volleyball Coach

The Year 10 Knockout Netball team had success in their first round of games against Heathfield High School and Cabra Dominican College.

We played Heathfield first, with good communication and combinations ensuring we lead by 4-6 goals for most of the game. Some final quarter nerves took hold and Heathfield pegged the deficit back to a single goal with a few minutes to go. Thankfully, we composed ourselves from then on to hold them off for a thrilling, nerve-racking 1 goal victory (29-28).

After a 30-minute break, we faced off against Cabra. Having worked out our patterns of play in the first game, we played consistently and increased our lead throughout. In a much more comfortable result, we won 28-17.

The team is: Zoe Cass, Grace Crowder, Abby Naughton, Abbey Sweet, Sarah Howe, Lara Mullins (Captain), Paxton Davis-Mattner, Chloe Edmonds, Lily Pfitzner and Bella Stevenson (injured). All played well and participated with excellent spirit and sportsmanship.

Open Boys Knockout Basketball

Open Girls Knockout NetballOn Monday, 5 June, the following Open Girls played in the first round of the Knockout Netball competition: Tianna Faulkner, Tahnee Sickerdick, Jacinta Jefferies, Adelia Stephenson, Paige Kleinig, Jasmine Reid, Chloe Schaefer, Charlie Weeks, Sintra Cowlam, Olivia Hughes and Sophie Rhodes. The team had a comfortable win over Murray Bridge thanks to a fast-paced midcourt, excellent defensive pressure and effective movement and rebounding by our shooters. The final score was Cornerstone 45 – Murray Bridge 19.The second game we came up against a strong Sacred Heart team with a lot of height, pace and strength! Despite matching up to them quite well, they managed to sneak away with a solid win. The final score was Cornerstone 17 – Sacred Heart 41. Thank you to the girls for their fantastic attitudes and for representing the College in a positive manner. Thank you also to Shari Juers for helping to run the show! Miss Kayla ChumbleyOpen Girls Knockout Netball Coach

Open Boys Knockout BasketballOn Thursday, 15 June the Cornerstone Open Boys Basketball Team hosted Murray Bridge and Marryatville for the first round of the Knockout competition.

Cornerstone started the game against Murray Bridge confidently. The boys applied strong defensive pressure and made a number of steals early which enable quick transition into attack and the points began to flow. At times Murray Bridge matched Cornerstone’s intensity in offence with a number of 3 point shots, however, there was very little doubt as to who was in control of the game. Cornerstone defeated Murray Bridge 53 to 25.

The game against Marryatville proved to be far more challenging. Cornerstone led for most of the game but were pushed for its entirety. A true team effort enable Cornerstone to have several scoring options. Solid defence restricted Marryatville’s flowing attack and Cornerstone held strong to defeat Marryatville by 4 points. Final score Cornerstone 48 defeated Marryatville 44.

The boys now move into round 2 of the competition to be played early in Term 3.Cornerstone was well represented by Tom Hill, Lachlan Warhurst, Tom Glover, Josh Hogben, Mason Baxter, Liam Fitzgerald, Daniel Kupczynski and Max Glover.

The Open Boys Football team travelled to Marryatville to play both Murraybridge and Marryatville. In the first game against Marryatville it came down to the last play of the day and unfortunately we couldn’t score the winning goal and ended up losing by 5 points.

We had to regroup quickly for our second contest and looked flat for the majority of the game. Trailing by 2 goals going into the last quarter the leadership group of Bates, Spain, Leake and Harris took it upon themselves to make wholesale changes, with the most significant being Alfie Wenk onto the ball. With an inspiring display in the Ruck by

Lachlan Hesse and 3 goals by Ryan King Cornerstone ran away with the game to win by 17 points. Unfortunately, Marryatville progressed to the next round by defeating Murrybridge. Great effort and well done all.

and are major recyclers of nutrients.

Learn more about the vital importance of fungi from one of Australia’s fungi experts, Dr Sapphire McMullan-Fisher from Fungimap. She will show

us some of the diversity of fungi and explain how they help to keep ecosystems functioning.

This is a free event funded through a grant from the State Government’s Natural Resources:

Adelaide & Mount Lofty Ranges and supported by the Bremer Barker Catchment Group.

Where: Purtinga Centre, Cornerstone College, Mount Barker

When: Monday, 3 July. 7.00pm start. Sapphire’s presentation will go for 80 minutes.

Come and join us at around 6.30pm for a sausage sizzle. Drinks for sale and tea/coffee available.

RSVP: It would be helpful if you could let us know you’re coming by replying on Trybooking:www.trybooking.com/QRRP or phone 8398 6000
