What an awesome summer we are having. Good weather and good times. I hope this magazine reaches you all in top condition, ready for a great year.

I could not start off this year without mentioning the absolutely tremendous National Camp that was held at the end of last year. It was an awesome opportunity to get to know you guys better and to have a whole lot of fun. Those who attended, Members, staff and volunteers all combined to make the camp a great time. Without you guys it would not have been the same. Mention must be made of ‘The Water Fight’ I would like to put up a big high five to those who joined me in the planning and implementation of the great event, you know who you are. Living Life is one of our values and one of the ones we do best and I hope we continue to keep it that way.

National Camp was organised by a great group of people known as the NCC. All that happened at that camp could not have happened without

the tireless efforts of these people. Thank you so much.

This year has much to offer. We have a new leadership program, Jumpstart, Teenlink, Good Grief, SAFE Talk and loads more, not to mention all the awesome things that are going to happen in your divisions. Be sure to look at the National Program calendar and inform National if you are keen. Get involved in all that we can offer at this great organisation.

Well, only a short message from me this month but keep on keeping on. Remember, Live Life, Respect,

One Team, Do It Right, Keep It Real and Own It.

Matt Truman National President

National Camp 2007.Our goal for this camp was to beat Gore ’07 by 10% and by all accounts we achieved that. Members, staff and volunteers all enjoyed a fun camp, met heaps of new CanTeeners and participated in the activities. For my part I loved meeting lots of CanTeeners and seeing everyone enjoy the whole atmosphere. I didn’t enjoy the dunking with water and sand quite so much!!

Patient Support project.Over the next few months we will be talking to a range of Members, health professionals, hospital management, staff and parents about how CanTeen can develop more and better services for patient Members. This will involve meetings and discussions around the possibility of services to improve Members’ experiences at treatment and diagnosis. The findings will be reported to the Board for their consideration as part of a Strategic Plan Review in June this year.

Jump Start 2008.Big thanks to all those who helped provide a great day at Whenuapai Airport recently to throw 25 CanTeeners out of an Air Force Hercules. With parachutes and instructors attached of course!

TV One ‘s Close-up programme featured the event and the

Bliek family and their journey. We are still trying to stage this

event Nationally.

Nurse Training. Now that an AYA (Adolescent Young

Adult) Oncology Service operates from five centres throughout the country, we have continued to fund specialised training

for the several nurses to help them learn the key points of assisting young people living with Cancer. The Coventry distance learning course is one training product we

support and other related conferences have also been part funded.

International collaboration. As we strive to provide better services for members, we have increased our

relationships with key groups trying to do the same for their Members, particularly in the U.K, Australia and the United States. A new development in this area is an

international tele-conference planned for late February when CanTeen Australia, Teenage Cancer Trust from U.K. and CanTeen NZ will discuss how we can best help

each other to improve the treatment outcomes for our members.

Jane Hastings and Jackie Mark of Harcourts Devonport are great role models for their industry. Operating out of Harcourts Devonport (on the North Shore of Auckland) they have committed to donate 5% from every house commission to CanTeen for the next three years. And judging by house prices in Devonport this is no small commitment and one we are very thankful for! We are further exploring having one full commission each year donated to the CanTeen cause.

This model of corporate giving is one we hope will inspire others across the country. To this end we will promote the Corporate Club concept

through regional networks with the aim of steadily growing membership. With the distinction of being founding members of the Corporate Club Jackie and Jane are building their already high local profile by promoting the association with us - and we believe gaining new business as a result. The idea of benefiting from doing good is one catching on across the world as more and more businesses pay attention to corporate and social responsibility (CSR) as a key part of their bottom line.

If you know people in business who might be interested in becoming a member of the CanTeen Corporate Club talk to your Marketing team in the first instance.

There have been some amazing folks out there who have done some great fundraising for CanTeen lately.

John Hancock recently raised over $10,000 for CanTeen by getting sponsorship for competing in Challenge Wanaka, a long distance triathalon. John originally had a plan of raising $1,000 for us so as you can see he has done an amazing job!

Bruce Rule is planning to raise $25,000 for CanTeen by

paddling across 5 major NZ lakes (about 140km’s!).

Bruce was inspired to help CanTeen after his own

recent experience with cancer. Check out Bruce’s

website and show him some CanTeen support!

Datacom did a great

job of selling bandannas for us

during Bandanna Week and they decided to go a step further for us by raising $10,000 for us at their Christmas function! Awesome support – thanks Datacom! Both John and Bruce use www.fundraiseonline.co.nz to help them raise money –

it’s a good site to suggest for people who want to do an event to support CanTeen.

AUSTRAlIA 2008

What an opportunity to go and find out more about the way another

country run their National Camp!

Lane Nicol, Invercargill, Guy Alexander, Whangarei, and I left on the 6th

January to spend a week in Sydney. The boys were selected after a letter

of application to go and I am sure they got as much out of it as I did. They

were a great pair to represent New Zealand.

We had amazing weather with it getting a bit hot sometimes, on the beach

day we couldn’t have asked for more and the water was so warm.

We all got a bit of ribbing about our kiwi accent with everyone asking us

to say “Fish and Chips” and 66 but it added to the fun of the camp.

The Camp was really well run giving everyone a chance to try something

new like surfing, wheelchair basketball, lawn bowls and more. There

were a few things that we thought would be great for us to try at our

National Camps.

We even managed to get some sight seeing in and go

to the markets before we had to catch our plane home.

In comparison with Australia I think we are doing

a great job with our National Camps. Thank you

CanTeen New Zealand for giving us the opportunity

to attend.

The rate of increase in survival rates for Adolescent cancer lags behind those of Children and Adults. Adolescents have very different social, physical and emotional needs when it comes to treatment.

CanTeen is developing initiatives to improve the treatment and support received by young people living with cancer. We receive no Government funding and need your support to continue these initiatives.

improving & saving lives

“Do It Right” is a CanTeen Value. It is about taking responsibility, doing your best and having pride in what we do.

» By working with the Ministry of Health and Medical

Professionals CanTeen has helped to create Service

Specifications for protocols for the treatment of all

Adolescents with cancer in New Zealand. This

initiative is a first for New Zealand and will help to

address the lack of access to clinical trials for 13-24

year olds living with cancer.

» Currently if you are a 13-24 year old being

treated for cancer you might be in a Paediatric

ward or an Adult ward. How would you feel

being away from friends and family and

having to be in a ward with “oldies” or little

kids?! We are a committed funding partner

to the dedicated 6 bed Adolescent Ward in

the soon to be refurbished Oncology unit at

Starship Hospital. The ward will be a

first for New Zealand.

» CanTeen has funded nurses

from all over New Zealand

through the internationally

recognised Coventry

Adolescent Cancer Training

Course so that our Members can

receive age specific treatment.

» Imagine being a 14 year old with cancer. Your treatment has meant you have not been able to attend school for 2 years – but now you are ready to go back. How would this feel? We are developing a 12 week transition programme to help patients integrate back into their home, school and community after treatment.

» Cancer treatment can put a young person’s

life on hold for months or even years.

An activities programme is being created by CanTeen for

Adolescent cancer patients in hospital to help relieve

boredom and give them events and opportunities to

look forward to.

It’s time to get creative and send us your ideas for bandanna designs for 2008. It’s a really simple process, just send your designs to us on paper along with colour suggestions and some information about the inspiration behind your design and you’ll be in the running to have your design made into a bandanna this year!

Remember:• Youcanuseupto3colours,butifyouuse3oneofthemmustbewhite.

• Patternsworkbetterthanonebigimage

Send your designs along with your name, phone number, what division you are from and your email address to Jade/CanTeen P.O Box 56-072 Dominion Rd Auckland 1446. You can also ask your CanTeen staff member to send them for you.

CanTeen is launching CanTeen Art Space soon

It’s a site where you can personalise anything from a book to a bag with some great CanTeen artwork – plus some of the proceeds support CanTeen. Check it out on www.canteenartspace.co.nz.

If you or anyone you know is an artist and would like to share your work with the world and help CanTeen, please email [email protected] with a picture of your art. Please note that we can’t guarantee it will be used but we appreciate your support.

DESIGN A BANDANNA

Hey there, I’m Justin Little, the new Member Liaison Co-ordinator for Auckland. (Actually not that new, been around for a couple of months now but what with Christmas and all….). I’ve spent most of my life working or volunteering alongside young people, from Youth Justice, to a teacher’s aide, to at risk youth, and more. Along the way I have learnt a

lot about people, and in the time I have been here have already begun to learn a lot more, and can’t imagine that stopping. I am looking forward to meeting those of you I have not had the chance to catch up with yet, and am planning on doing some exciting things to make sure that happens, so watch those spaces….

christmas party Pizza ordered, sounds set up, and everyone at the right venue so Hawke’s Bay Christmas party was all go. With a good turnout, we set up games and danced all night. We started with the limbo with Erika Rush (president of Poverty Bay Branch) and Myself Challenging for the winner. It was eventually a tie which was a bit of a let down. The night went off and continued with the suck a M&M up in a straw race, balloon popping competitions and more. We had a very good feed of Hells pizza and it was time for last game of pass the parcel, and then clean up. Was a great way to finish off the year. Thanks to Anita for all her work last year and her continued support in future.

aGm & Beach dayLast Saturday we all met at the office for that great annual event our – AGM. All went well and a new committee was formed… And thanks from me to all the 2007 committee members – you rock!

And organized to follow this was a great day in the sun – organized by one of our Members – Warrick. Well he had spoken to the weather gods well enough – it was a beautiful, hot HB day. But he had forgotten to have a word with the sea gods. We got out to Waimarama Beach to have a great day of sun, surf and food only to find the beach closed. The tide had not moved (i.e. lowered) since high tide 4 hours ago. If we had set up our site where we would have liked to, we would have been swimming to get it all back – out of the sea.

Wairoa ski tripHey guys!!

I just wanted to tell you about the awesome day we had water skiing with Hawkes Bay CanTeen. In November last year East Cape and Hawkes Bay had another joint activity together. The day was filled with a whole lot of laughs as we had the opportunity to have a go on the water either water skiing, having a go on the biscuit or the hot dog. For me the highlight of the day was being encouraged to go on the water by the enthusiasm shown by others. Everyone took part whether it was going for a ride on the boat or being the one on the end of the rope being pulled along. Wairoa Water Ski Club gave up their time to help us and it was much appreciated as we all left for home tired but with a story to tell and new friends.

Regards,

Erika.

eastcape’s president report Since our last magazine, East Cape Branch has been water skiing with Hawkes Bay CanTeen and we had our

Christmas party.

We held our BBQ Christmas party at our new office at the beach and despite the small number of people who attended, we all had fun scoffing our faces and enjoying each others company around the chocolate fountain.

On the 14th of December Lianne, Bex and I flew from the Gisborne airport for national camp in Auckland only to be greeted and tackled down by a monkey and an elephant at the gate. The week was filled withwater fights, group talk sessions, activities and an awesome ball on the last night. The camp was well planned and it was an awesome time to get to know everyone.

auckland/northland summer camp 08 – survivor moirs point

Well it was a beautiful day to start a camp, and despite all the worries about a repeat of last years’ bus disaster, the only problem was the bus arriving a little late to pick us up. We arrived on time

however, and Sam, Guy, and Tim had done a magnificent job of getting the camp set up. After we all spent some time getting to know each other everybody donned their shirts and got started on developing their Survivor teams. Steve ended up with “who are we”, and I think as we drove away from the camp most people were still confused about who they were! Despite the wind picking up on Saturday everyone had fun with the kayaks, most of us ending up getting wet one way or another. Sunday proved to be too windy to do much outside but we gave it a go. Josh Heenan was awarded the prize for the Member who lived the values of CanTeen at Camp. Once again another successful CanTeen event for the Auckland/Northland crews, leaving everyone tired but happy and looking forward to the next activity.

the capeOn the late afternoon of February 10th, my Mother, Auntie, 2 of my cousins and I, journeyed into the city of Auckland to watch “The Cape”. The Cape is a New Zealand play about a group of 4 teenagers taking a road trip up to Cape Reinga, however one of the guys had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing chemo. It was well written, at some stages I could hear my Auntie and Mum sobbing, then a few scenes later they were cackling away. The evening was a fantastic way for some of my extended family to get to know a bit about what CanTeen does.

Overall it was well written and my family and I enjoyed ourselves thoroughly!

Thank you very much Helen and CanTeen for the tickets!

Jess Mackie

How many of you can say that you’ve slept in an elephant’s house? Well 30 Members from Auckland can!

We arrived at the Zoo just as it was closing to the public, and soon the place was ours, well, apart from the Zoo staff and all those animals of course! We had a wander round at our leisure and then met up again at the Old Elephant House for dinner. Then, with our torches wrapped in red cellophane (who likes to have a bright white light shone in their face? No critter that I know of!) we headed on our ‘Night Safari’! The highlight of the tour had to be when we got to feed the hippopotamuses; it was like a life size game of Hungry Hungry Hippos!

Sleeping in the Old Elephant House was pretty cool. Although the mattresses were the size and width of a weet-bix and the night sounds were curious and plentiful. Albeit mainly the dulcet tones of members

snoring and a symphony of cell-phone rings!

We celebrated our MLC Justin’s birthday in the morning, with a cake, some awful

singing and too many ‘forbidden breakfast doughnuts’! Hmmmm forbidden breakfast doughnuts………………….. A great trip and we all made it home in one piece!

But all was not lost as the reserve was open, so we set up there. Shade cover, a net, cricket pitch and food. Food came first, then games of badminton and volley ball (with a beach ball – interesting?!). But did it get hot and we had no breeze and no sea to swim in so…

Of we went to some Maraetotora Falls. Just to give you an idea of the temperature of the water here, put a bag of ice in a bucket and pop your feet into the bucket. This will give you an idea of the water temperature – it definitely woke you up. A fun day had by all!

In January a group of Members went along for their monthly fun to the Amazing Maze ‘n Maize. It all started off well we got there and tried doing the maze that you see. The only trick was you could only turn left or go straight ahead. Seems simple but… just ‘cos you can see where you are meant to end up doesn’t mean you get there easily.

Next we ventured into the fully grown maze during the day time. No map and some CanTeen members to give directions. Fortunately for me I was with a regular to the maze and a CanTeener (Ashley) who

knew exactly how to get out of the maze and was even radioing other members to tell them where to go.

Out of the maze and into the food – well it couldn’t be a CanTeen activity without food. And next along came this rather dodgy nurse. Well she screamed, had blood and other bodily fluids

on her dress…and ran around weirdly wanting to get blood from Members veins. Karen our volunteer was absolutely terrified as this nurse proceeded to go through her hair to find nits. Karen has since reported she has had nightmares about this nurse.

Maze characters moved out from the maze and through jail cell walls and with chain saws but we survived to leave the maze in one piece, having screamed a lot (well some more than others). Everyone had a great night.

Thanks to Les and Cal (the Maze’s owners) for this wonderful event once again!!! Keep up the great work!

Hey I’m Sean Crocker, the new President of

CanTeen Hawke’s Bay (HB). Some of you

guys may remember me from past magazines

as I was the Vice president of Manawatu. I

have moved home after finishing my studies

in Palmerston North. I have walked into an

awesome committee in the wonderfully warm

and sunny HB. I have great things planned

for HB over the year and expecting big things

from my wonderful committee. We have been

in the building stages over last couple of years

in HB and now it’s time to set in concrete

CanTeen HB. We are losing a couple of our

older committee members from the mix which

is sad but is really good seeing so many

young and new faces putting their hands up

for CanTeen. Thanks to Emma Greatbatch

and Andrew (my brother) Crocker for the

efforts over the last few years and wish them

well in the future. Well that’s all for me here in

HB and I hope to see many more Hawke’s Bay

CanTeener’s at upcoming events.

There was a solid turnout of Members, families and volunteers who all seemed to have a great day and really without them…they day would have been pretty average!

After we had all gained about 10kgs of weight from lunch, it was Secret Santa time and to our surprise, Santa was there! After we had all received our loot from Santa, Haley and I had organized a ‘Big Dig” on the beach which went really well. And about then, it was time to clean up, pack up and roll out. A big thanks to Haley, Koral, Prudence and myself for the sterling effort that we put into organising such a ripper of a Christmas Party.

alf’s armyOur January activity for this year had been decided by Alf’s Army when they declared war on us, shocked at the fact of CanTeenbeingrunbymembersaged13-24withquote“Noadult influence”.

The war and battle commenced at Central Park, Brooklyn. 9 of us Vs 8 of them. We stole all their teddies (hidden behind their shields, well not that well hidden) and hung them over the barrier of a bridge, and stole their flag too, but then as we are friendly war veterans we offered our opposition afternoon tea and gave them back their bears and flag.

All in all it was much fun and thank you to Alf’s Army for declaring war.

Knowing where we had to end up, all the bikes followed Penny’s car down and up the motorway and into the Bluebridge Ferry Terminal, where our drivers and their bikes (as much as we wished and wanted they did not donate one to Wellington CanTeen) were getting ready to head down south.

Good times were had and a huge thank you to our driver and their trikes.

11am on a Sunday morning, and the pro surfers tucked boards under their arms, tossed back their hair and headed for the surf….NOT QUITE!

We zipped wetsuits, pulled on our ‘L’ plate rash vests and waddled down to the beach clutching boards with both hands.

Our volunteer Baz, arms in the air, huge grin on his face showed off his new found talents.

The rest of us weren’t so fortunate, but enjoyed the water all the same, some attempts were made to get up but most of

them resulted in falling down.

Pro Surfers of the day go to Roxy, Mandy, Emma and Baz.

Efforts were well rewarded with a BBQ lunch in the sun.

Overall it was well worth getting up before lunch on a Sunday!!

sWannanoa airfield eventOn the 9th of February the Swannanoa Airfield and the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) got together to organise an awesome day full of great food and amazing antique aircraft flights all to raise funds for CanTeen. The Swannanoa Airfield had a mass of caravans and camper vans parked off to the side and 6 antique aircrafts were getting fuelled up ready to take us on a unique flight experience. Attending CanTeen members got first bids on

whatever air craft we wanted to go in, then began to make filled rolls and sandwiches and light up the BBQ for the awesome sausage sizzle to feed a long queue of very hungry customers!

After lunch the generous pilots provided paying NZMCA members a scenic flight with all of the money going to CanTeen.

In all it was a very successful day for everyone involved with a lot of us gaining an experience of a lifetime!

Thank you very very much to the team out at Swannanoa Airfield, especially Des and Adrienne Lines and to the very kind NZMCA for choosing CanTeen to receive the $550 donation.

activities loW-doWnWe have been up to some pretty neat things down

here in the wild south. It’s not all about shearing

sheep and driving tractors…no siree. A few weeks

ago we had a ripper of a Summer Camp in the Sounds,

we have had a whirl on the old hydroslides at QE2

a number of times, we have been learning how to

become bendy through Yoga and shortly we are off to

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve to check out some of my

cousins, the gazelles (People say that I move like these

delicate creatures).

This weekend we are off punting down the Avon

where I’m sure I will get pushed in and get duck itch all

over everywhere. Nice.

Already we are planning our Divisional Camps...one

in Hanmer, another at Mt Cook and if all goes to plan

after Lotto this Saturday, we will be going to LA to

meet up with Magnum PI and The Hoff.

So, if in doubt, move to Christchurch and become part

of our division where we teach you how to ooze “cool”.

lyttleton QuiltersThe group at Lyttleton Quilters did a beautiful job of creating masterpieces from some of our bandanna stock. The items included 4 painstakingly detailed quilts, a funky cushion cover and a whole batch of reversible toiletries bags made from two bandannas. A huge thanks to the time and effort these dedicated ladies put into their work. The black and white quilt will become a wall hanging whilst the other quilts

are already adorning the beds at the CHOC Unit in Christchurch Hospital, much to our members delight!

how to turn the things we set off. Destination: Picton. Approximately 12kms away!!! What a feat. We all arrived pretty tired after about 4 hours of kayaking. So proud of everyone who did that!

Wendy, Prue, Jason and John picked us up in Picton and we drove to Woodbourne to stay at the RNZAF base. We had tea, a swim in the pool and then watched Napoleon Dynamite.

Thanks so much to Chris from at Mistletoe Bay, Gary and Ellen Orchard at Pelorus Charters, the crew of Steadfast Sail at Kayakie place, Ross from Woodbourne Airforce Base, Wendy, Candy, Jason and John-our wonderful volunteers, Joelene and Prudence for great organisation of a camp that we won’t forget in a long time and to all the Members who helped to make it so fun. All you guys rock my world!

See you all next year… for an even bigger and better one.

CanTeen NSI Summer Camp 2008 was from Thursday 24th till Sunday 27th January, filled with fun and exciting things to do. Location was in the Marlborough Sounds at the beautiful Mistletoe Bay.

The bay was just picturesque; we unpacked and headed down to the wharf for a swim.

The next morning we got up nice and early for breakfast, packed a day pack and headed over the hill to Te Mahia where we were getting picked up by the Orchards for a day cruise around the Keneperu Sound.

The day was huge and involved a trip to a ship wreck, Tobogganing (Jason, Stu and Sam becoming pros at Standing Up on it), Biscuiting, Scalloping, Swimming, Fishing and even a little bush walk. A bit of something for everyone.

After the wonderful day on the boat (Toroa) we headed back to Mistletoe Bay for a BBQ to eat the days catch and scallops.

The next day we headed out on a yacht called Steadfast. It was a huge replica of a famous boat called The Love Boat. There wasn’t much wind but we cruised and chatted all the way to Nakuta Bay. Here we had lunch and got ready for the afternoon of kayaking.

We got into pairs of ability and hopped in the double kayaks. After working out how to work as a team and

Sam is a real horse lover and that is what has got her through her cancer experience. When she heard about the chance to ride into Dunedin on her horse Cindy wild horses would not have kept her away.

What an amazing couple Genna and Kerrin are, we spent some time with them over the time they were in Dunedin and when they left we felt like we had known them for ever. We hope the rest of there trip is going well.

southlandHi all – hope everyone has had

a relaxing holiday and a great Christmas and New Year. We just started back last Wednesday after ending last year with our non-

alcoholic cocktail party which was awesome. We had a great turn out, the cocktails were delicious and the secret Santa presents were a laugh. The office looked amazing like it had been transformed. It

was good to see everyone having a good night.

After the holidays there was a lot to catch up on. For the first activity for the year Jo decided to make the most of the great weather while we had it. We ended up having fish’n’chips in Queens Park followed by a well put together scavenger hunt which got everyone’s brain working and all the Members becoming very

competitive to get to the finish first. After using all our energy and becoming very low on sugar. The end of the Scavenger hunt lead us to the sweet treats of dessert at the Cheeky Llama. Todd had a great idea afterwards to go on the round-about – though not everyone was too keen.

Summer camp is coming up soon and we are off to Otematata, which I’ve been told is somewhere between Christchurch and Timaru. It should be full of excitement and great laughs. I can’t wait to catch up with everyone again!

Well, best wishes for the year to come,

it should be very eventful.

Happy New Year Everyone!!

Catch ya later!

Kia ora, my name is Courtland and I’m 15yrs old and have been a member of CanTeenfor3yrsandIthinkit’scoolthatwenowhaveourownWanganui/Manawatu branch of CanTeen. But, I will miss Penny who has done a wonderful job running and looking after us as well as the busy Wellington branch. We had a great evening and met some awesome people, and my older brother, AJ, was elected onto our branch committee as the treasurer and I’m a willing committee member. Even though I was to chicken to go into the maize, preferring to stay having a beautiful hot chocolate with Penny instead, lol,Cheers Courtland

Hey there guys. For those of you who know me and met me at summer camp you

will remember me as “The Hoff”. For those who don’t understand; you will find out

somewhere along the way from others. Summer camp was definitely a blast with

a lot of new friendships made and a lot of friendships rekindled. Friday was when

the excitement began with a full on day of fishing, scalloping and wake boarding.

There was a lot of crafty stunts and funny overboard moments. We got back that

afternoon and were all pretty buggered, but of course as always were well fed by

the leaders and volunteers. After a good nights sleep we were back at it again

with a twist. We travelled from Mistletoe Bay to Nakutu Bay on a big sailing ship

- was a slow but interesting trip. This is where we picked up the double kayaks.

Of course Matt Truman and I were together in our “presidential kayak”. We then

kayaked around 12 km to Picton through one of the busiest ports avoiding the

big ferries. We were then back in the vans to travel to Blenheim’s Woodbourne

Air force base. This is where we stayed our final night and just relaxed. We went

swimming at their pool, played games and had another great meal supplied by

the catering staff. The next day it was time to pack up, say our good byes and

travel in separate directions. Overall this was an awesome camp with many

adventures and laughs along the way. Well done and thanks to all who made it

possible and enjoyable.

CanTeeners in the Manawatu got

the chance to go ride on some Trikes

–vehicles with their front half motorbike/

back half car, thanks to the Christchurch

trikers who has come back down from

their fundraising event triking around

New Zealand. We were able to travel

down on the trikes to meet some friends

at Otaki then have some afternoon tea

with them then we headed back.

CanTeen Manawatu is back in action! We

now have an awesome committee of 8 from our first AGM in a while. We are revving up into high gear! We have reps from Palmy, Wanganui and Otaki.

Hey CanTeeners!

The Manawatu AGM for 08 was absolutely awesome!

People from Palmerston North, Otaki, Wellington and

Wanganui came together at the Amazing Maze ‘n Maize in

Sanson for a fun filled night.

Once we all had a really yummy dinner it was time to get

down to business and elect the committee. Manawatu

now has a really cool bunch of people that make up our

committee.

Yet the night was about to get so much more interesting!

We all lined up for the ‘CornEvil’ maze and were then taken

into a shed and were told the rules. A question was asked

“so what happens if we get lost” The frightening response

was “too bad”!

So all pumped and ready to go we split up into groups and

headed into the dark maze (maize?).

The maze was filled with blood everywhere with creepy,

scary people chasing you. They even massaged the back of

your head - now that’s creepy!

At the end of the night everyone had been frightened, and

everyone got to know each other a lot more! Big thanks to

Chris and Penny for making the night so awesome!

On Saturday 9th of February we all met at the maze n maize in Sanson. We got about the business of electing our branch committee and discussed what we want to do and achieve as a group. With all the business concluded, which coincided with it getting dark enough to venture out into the ‘the CORN EVIL’ maze, where they have actors hidden who jump out and chase you with chainsaws etc. It was great fun and many a CanTeener was heard to be screaming with fright and running in fear!!! I was informed by a reliable, but anonymous eyewitness, Chris was seen running for his life!!! We have a great bunch of people and I look forward to a fun year together.Cheers AJ

Recently, I went on a very inspiring and enjoyable weekend at Whitianga from the1sttothe3rdofFebruary.Thiswasheaps of fun as I got to see lots of my CanTeen friends and we even got to stay in a motel. Another awesome thing was that I was able to jam with my friends on the guitar and learn new songs.

The first exciting event which took place was going to the hot water beach. We all had fun digging around in the sand searching for the hot water.

After we had finished at the hot water beach, we split up into three groups and had a turn (one group at a time) going on a scenic boat trip out to Cathedral Cove. Unfortunately, I couldn’t really see too much (I am legally blind) but I still found the boat ride rather enjoyable.

The following morning we went on the banana boats. This was really exciting, although I did find it rather scary. Even so, I am pleased that I did it.

After the banana boats, it was time to pack up and head home.

Overall, I am pleased that I have had this experience and I will always remember it. It is not every day that you get to experience something like this.

Hello everyone!

I can’t believe how fast the holidays went and that we are now back into work, school and organising events for CanTeen for the year. I hope you all had a great and safe Christmas and New Year and are fully rested for the exciting events CanTeen has to offer this year!

Down South we are busy organising for our Summer Camp in Otematata, hopefully the weather will stay nice for us! Also, a big thank you to Sharon, Jo and Maureen who have been working hard (as usual) to have this year’s Summer Camp just as successful as all of the others.

I heard National Camp was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all, I am quite disappointed that I wasn’t able to attend! Also, National Camp in Australia was a great experience for the boys (and Sharon) and it was awesome for them to meet fellow CanTeeners over the ditch.

I wish you all good luck for 2008 and can’t wait to see and meet some of you at National Programmes this year.

While we were waiting to go on the boat, Hannah and I made a really cool face on the sand. Hannah did most of this, but I still helped. The things I liked about this face was the Pinky wrapper in which we used for the ribbon in its hair and the shells in which we placed in its mouth for teeth. I reckon that these ideas were really creative.

That afternoon we went back to camp and had fish and chips for lunch. We then went on a scavenger hunt in the same groups as we were in for the boat trip. Our team was Gold Team. We ended up coming second, which I thought wasn’t too bad.

After this, we also went on these bikes that seated six people, and this was also excellent fun.

Also a group of 5 of us had an awesome time on National Camp in December

People don’t realise it but being able to talk about your journey and your experiences of being a patient or a sibling of someone with cancer makes complications and challenges a lot easier. Throughout this story you will realise how much CanTeen really changed my life.

When I was in the bus on my way to Winter Camp with my sister and other CanTeeners, I was so nervous and just kept to myself most of the time. All the CanTeeners (and everyone else, of course!) were friendly and didn’t mind sharing their experiences, but I was a little shy when it came to talking

about my journey through cancer. I had never really told anyone about how I felt because no one really asked about me; they were all worried about my

sister or my parents. I wasn’t used to people asking about how I felt and how I found the challenges my sister had to put up with.

Hi, I’m Scott Densem from CanTeen NSI.

On 29th of January this year, I caught the plane

to Napier for the National Deaf Youth Camp -

CanTeen helped me to attend.

We had to get up at 6:30am each day, and did

activities and team games. Playing War Ropes

was fun, and my team won, yeah! Friday was

dress up night, and different

groups made up and performed

dramas and funny shows for

everyone.

I met lots of new friends and

old friends at the camp. We

were talking till

1:15am in the

morning.

Thanks so

much, I enjoyed

it lots.

they were attached to a parachute that was attached

to a tandem jump master. Jump Start commenced

in 2007 when skydiving enthusiast Pete Maher from

Jump Start wanted to make a difference in the lives

of young people on his 50th birthday. Together with

the New Zealand Parachute Federation, Pete invited

25 members from CanTeen to join him in the air and

experience a tandem sky dive. This is now an annual

event for CanTeen and will be based in Auckland at

canteener for a while!

Eventually I started to open up and began to feel comfortable talking about my experiences and my feelings about the situation, realising that CanTeen understood what I had to go through and how I felt. When I would talk to my friends about what situation my sister was in they wouldn’t understand when I used medical words or I said I wasn’t feeling too well because she had to go back into hospital. Now I think back on it, I think they didn’t understand because they didn’t realise how scared I was of losing my sister. They didn’t understand that I wasn’t sad about me, but I was sad about my sister and what my family was going through.

Before I joined CanTeen, I never thought about myself. But when I joined, I realised I’m just as important to worry about. CanTeen really made me feel welcome and cared for.

My sister’s cancer has affected me and my family and CanTeen has helped me to deal with some of the toughest situations I’ll have to face in my life. The people that I have come to know as part of the CanTeen family have a very special place in my life now.
