Thank You!
At our recent P&C meeting approval was given for the purchase of our last interactive whiteboard. This means that all classrooms (including Music, Italian, Science and Drama) will have access to a SMART board. We now have 34. You may have noticed that the boards, which are a very valuable learning tool, are used regularly by the teachers and children. This project has been a wonderful example of how the P&C, with your support, has made an incredible difference to our learning programs. Thank You!
‘Kiss and Go’
There has been a great improvement in the drive throughs with only a few drivers still causing some concern. Please remember to drive forward as far as possible in the drive-through. Clearly this helps to reduce the traffic banking up back into Concraige Way.
The dangers are also obvious to everyone when a car arrives for pick up without using the one way system. Hopefully it won’t be much longer before these drivers support our endeavours to make the area safe for all children.
Unfortunately, things are not so good in the front car park, where only those families with Kindy children are permitted to enter. Please do not use this car park to drop off older children. It is very congested and can be dangerous for these very young students.
Project Numbat
We have received two certificates in acknowledgement of our support for the ‘Numbat Project’. As a result of the fundraising by D6 and their friends last year, two Numbats ‘ Alearia’ and ‘Akuna’ (born at Perth Zoo) have been provided with radio-collars and released into the Australian Wildlife
Issue 4 22nd March,2012
Conservancy’s Scotia Sanctuary in New South Wales. The children really enjoyed their involvement in the project and are delighted with this result.
The World’s Greatest Shave Plus
During the last fortnight we have had several exciting events. Of these ‘The World’s Greatest Shave’ was a great example of a few people who were prepared to go a long way for a worthy cause. If you are very observant you will notice that Possum, Jake (C2), Sam (C5), Matt (C5) and Zac (C4) are all sporting close haircuts. They were very brave to take part and in doing so raised more than $1,260. Several of our senior girls (Darcy, Jade and Anahita) also contributed to the cause by having their hair dyed. The spectators also had lots of fun.
This event was followed on Friday by our support of the ‘National Anti-bullying/Violence Day’ which was promoted by our P&C Safety House committee. Many of the children wore orange in support of the event and teachers have endeavoured over the week to raise awareness of our ‘bullying no way’ policy at Rostrata. Having mentioned this, and with the knowledge that the last newsletter focused on bullying, it is important to again stress that we really need your support if we are gong to be successful in minimising it. Please let the children know how you feel about bullying and of the long term implications for people involved in this type of activity.
And finally, yesterday we celebrated Harmony Day. Throughout the school there were a variety of activities enjoyed by the children as they took the opportunity to reaffirm their friendships for each other and their commitment to our C.A.R.E. motto at Rostrata.

Dear Parent, Our school is pleased to inform you that the RAINBOWS program will continue to run at Rostrata this year. It is designed especially for children who are living in single parent families, step-families or families that are going through painful transitions. When something significant happens in a family, the whole family is affected. Even though death or divorce appears to be a problem mainly associated with adults, it also has a profound effect on the children it touches. If a parent dies, or separation/divorce occurs, not only do adults grieve, but the children grieve also. Because of their age, and short life experiences, children find it extremely difficult to verbalise their feelings. The RAINBOWS program provides an opportunity for children to be heard, understood and supported, in a safe, confidential and caring environment. In Term 2 we will be re-commencing the program at Rostrata. It will be conducted in small groups of approximately 3-5 children with a trained adult facilitator. Groups will meet weekly, for around 12 weeks, for between 40-60 minutes during school time. If you would like to discuss RAINBOWS further, please contact the school on 9457 9455. If you feel your child would benefit from being a part of this program, please complete the form below and return it to the school, in an envelope marked Confidential – Mrs Pattullo (Front Office) before Friday, 27th April 2012. My Rostrata Kitchen Rules!
The Rostrata School Community is seeking six cooks amongst us who are willing to
share their cultural cuisine (and recipes) while utilising our school’s fantastic
kitchen facilities when the students aren’t! We’ll not only learn to cook authentic
international foods but get to share them at the end of the session.
Just like on My Kitchen Rules – you don’t need to be a chef.
The school will host six cooking mornings on fortnightly Fridays during Term 2 and
Term 3 for parents, carers and grandparents to attend. Each session will focus on a
different cultural cuisine. Each week’s cook can decide what he/she cooks/bakes.
The school will provide funding for the ingredients and organise the photocopying
of the recipe/s you cook.
So if you are interested in cooking in front of, and for, other parents in a very
casual setting, please call coordinator Natalie Rechichi on 0421 843 519 or
9259 5123.
For those just wishing to attend (“watch, learn and eat”), look out for the session
dates in future Newsletters and around the school.

Participants wanted for research about resilience in children
Resilience is an important tool for children. In contemporary society, children are exposed to numerous negative
influences that can powerfully shape their health and wellbeing.
Researchers at the Child Health Promotion Research Centre at Edith Cowan University are seeking
families with children that were born in 2000 or later to be part of a study about resilience.
We want to identify the factors and processes that influence good resilience in children, especially those that live
in FIFO/DIDO families.
In order for us to develop strategies for families to boost resilience amongst children we invite your family
(parents and one or more children aged 12 years or over) to participate my completing a once only short
confidential questionnaire.
We will make a donation to Kids Helpline for each family that participates in the study. We hope to raise $500
to donate to Kids Helpline. Participants will not be identified in the results of the study.
If you have at least one child 12 years old and over and your family would like to be involved in the
research study please contact Jacinth Watson on E: [email protected] or M: 0457 434 801.

School Photo Day is Coming! Wednesday 28th March & Thursday 29th March
To assist parents in preparation for school photo day, we provide the following information:
Parents Remember!
Each student should by now have received an envelope for his or her photo order and payment. Parents are asked to
select the photographs they require and return the envelope to the class teacher on the photography day with payment included. Sibling photos require a separate sibling envelope, available at the school office.
Every student must return their own envelope with their order clearly marked, even where pay-ment is made in one envelope for multiple siblings. See your envelope for more information.
Any child who forgets or is unable to bring their envelope on the photo day will have a second chance to order school
photos from a proof sheet which will be delivered with the school photo orders, however additional charges will
apply.
Kapture offer a money back guarantee for any parent who is not fully satisfied with their photo package.
Should you have any queries before or after photo day, please direct them to the Kapture office on
9240 1714 or email [email protected].

In the Kitchen with Mrs Richards
We made delicious Eggplant Bake with all the wonderful vegetables in our garden.
We added to our dish fantastic squash, zucchini and beans. All in season!
The addition of mozzarella and parmesan made a tasty difference.
Our gorgeous Rocket and Lettuce Salad looked super with long ribbons of carrot
beautifully placed on top with a lovely lime and garlic dressing. Excellent work!
Thank you to the Bloxham family for kindly donating the limes.
In the Garden with Mrs Martini
Are you an employee of SGIO? If so would you contact Noni Walker ASAP (0408 918 050) as we are
applying for a SGIO community grant and need an employee contact.
We have had lots of wonderful volunteers this year particularly in the
Year 4 classes. All Years from 4 to 7 need volunteers in the garden and
the kitchen classes, so even if a roster has not come home don’t be shy -
we would love to see you even if it’s only once a term. No experience
needed. If your children are not in the programme yet but you would
still like to volunteer, please feel free to come any Tuesday or Thursday
down to the garden and I will show you around.
It’s starting to feel like autumn with the cooler mornings. In the garden
we are madly planting onions, cabbage, cauliflowers, broccoli, lettuce,
etc. The Year 4’s are starting to do some real gardening and getting
their gloves dirty! Well done all for your enthusiasm. The other years are
doing lots of composting and chicken care and learning about recycling in
the process.
Do you have experience in paths /paving and designing them for a garden? We are looking for
advice on what to do in the kitchen garden before committing money and time to making the paths.
Call Karina (0427 586 139).
Thanks to D1 and D2 for sponsoring two chickens. You are wonderful!
Thanks to Mr Giles (Senior) for donating his compost tumbler. We will be demonstrating
different composting methods with it and the black compost bins.
Thanks to Polytechnic West Veterinary Clinic (and Dr Hunt) for donating their time
to look after the health of our chickens.
See an update of the garden on the kitchen garden web pages (http://rostratagarden.weebly.com/)where
some wonderful photos from Renaye have been downloaded into the gallery.
Rostrata Organic Community Kitchen (ROCK) Garden update
What you can do to help :
• Join the weekend chicken roster this term and next.
• Worm Wiz can be bought outside the front office or at
assemblies. (Thanks to the new team from C4.)
• Donate shade cloth to make covers for the garden beds.
• Give advice on paths for the kitchen garden.

From the President…
Thank you to everyone who attended last Tuesday’s first General Meeting for 2012. It was great to see all of the
committees are hard at work to ensure we have another fantastic year at Rostrata.
Unfortunately, our wonderful Canteen Supervisor, Corinne Hunter, will be leaving us at the end of this term. We
have all loved having Mrs Hunter as part of the school community and she has been a wonderful Supervisor who
has worked with many volunteers over her four years working in our Canteen. We sincerely thank Corinne for her
hard work and enthusiasm and wish her all the best for the future.
We are also sadly saying goodbye to Mrs Juliana Tang who has been our Canteen Treasurer. Juliana has done a
magnificent job in the role and we wish her all the best for the future as she plans to move to Malaysia. Juliana is
handing over the Treasurer’s job to Dawn England whom we welcome to our P&C and to the Canteen Committee.
We would like to formally thank Jock Nee for applying for a Volunteer’s reward from her employer (Alcoa) which
has come directly to our P&C. On behalf of our school community and P&C, I would like to thank Jock Nee for
taking the time to apply for the funding which will be used to provide resources for our children.
We would also like to thank Helen Truscott who donated a portion of the profit from the sale of her handmade
library bags that were sold on Booklist day. Again, this money will be used to purchase items for our school.

From the Fundraising Committee…
This year the fundraising committee has many exciting events and school activities planned. Families will have
already received an order form for discounted Hoyts movie tickets and for the first time we are offering credit card
payment via PayPal as a payment option. Please make sure your order forms for Hoyts tickets are deposited into
the P&C mailbox in the front office no later than 3pm on Tuesday, 27th March.
We are also running a ‘Spring Bulb Fundraiser’ with some absolutely beautiful flowers available at fantastic prices.
This is a great activity to do with your children so you will literally see your garden bloom! Orders for this can
also be made via credit card and order forms must be deposited into the P&C mailbox no later than 3pm on
Wednesday, 4th April.
The IGA Schools’ Wish List Competition started on Saturday March 17 in The Weekend West newspaper and runs
for the next three weekends, giving Rostrata Primary School the chance to win in a share of $20,000 to turn our
school’s wishes into reality.
Please collect the coupon from The Weekend West and drop it in the box located in our school admin office. The
more coupons we collect the more chances we have to WIN!!

your support and participation!

Thank you again for your invaluable support!
From School Banking…
School Banker of the Month is back, every time a student makes a deposit to their account at school banking they
go into the draw to win $5. School Banker of the month will be announced at the end of each month and in the
school’s newsletter.
School banking is held every Wednesday morning in the undercover area between 8am and 8.45 am. If you have
any queries in regards to school banking please call Natalie on 0418 928 867 or come and see us on a Wednesday
morning.
From the Graduation Committee…
The graduation celebration for the Year 7’s is slowly beginning to come together but we could always use some extra
parent helpers. We welcome anybody who is willing to assist with the planning to make the night extra special and you
don’t need to have a child in Year 7 to do so.
Please contact us at [email protected] if you would like to become involved.
Also starting next term we will be asking parents if they have any pictures taken at school (or out on school excursions)
of our Year 7 students from now right back to their Kindy days, which can be included in the year book.
From the Safety House Committee…
The Bullying No Way Day was a great success with so many kids dressing up and the teachers bringing discussions and
activities into their classrooms to remind kids how important our school values are. Bullying is something that is not
acceptable at any level at Rostrata Primary School.
The colouring and poster competition has now closed and winners will be announced at the final school assembly on
Tuesday 3rd April. A big thank you to Graffic Jam in Kenwick for supporting our day with the great posters and the
fantastic banner which we can continue to use as reminder that bullying is not OK.
For more information about the National Day of Action Against Bulling & Violence, please visit their website
http://www.bullyingnoway.gov.au/
From the Canteen Committee…
Did you know that when you volunteer for a few hours in the canteen, you get a FREE LUNCH, and your child gets a FREE
CHEESEY or QUELCH STICK!! So, why not email the canteen now ([email protected]) and volunteer (we
would even love to have friends and family!!) to help out on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday. We only ask for a few
hours, once a term, so we look forward to seeing you.
PARENTS - Please don't forget that on Swimming Carnival Day (Monday 2nd April), there will be NO CANTEEN ORDERS
FOR YEARS 4 - 7.
The Pizza and Sushi Day orders must be received by Wednesday 28th March. Please remember that you cannot order
online for this special order day.
