From the Homeowners Association
Board of DirectorsBy Tony Smith, Director and Treasurer RRHOA
Fellow Neighbors,
Ihope everyone had a great Halloween and we can nowbegin preparing for Thanksgiving.
The primary mission of the River Run HomeownersAssociation (RRHOA) is to enforce our Rules and Regulations. Theserules are intended to protect the great appearance of our neighborhood!A great looking development is a more desirable place to live and inturn increases the value of our homes. As River Run has now pasttwenty years in age, there are a small handful of homes requiring bettermaintenance of their exteriors and yards. This may include stained, faded or dirty exterior finishes, rotted windows, or simple poorlymaintained grass and landscaping. These homes may decrease thevalue of other homes on the same our adjoining streets. Please look atyour exteriors and yards and consider what you can do to increase thevalue of your property investment.
Generally, everyone is very conscientious about cleaning up aftertheir pets. However, we have received complaints from both residentsand our landscape contractor that a few pet owners fail to pick-updroppings, or do pick-up waste and then throw plastic bags onto theberms. In addition, the landscape contractor reports repeated examplesof finding tree limbs or trash dumped on the berms rather thandisposed of properly by the bordering homeowners. Please help useliminate these issues.
Our landscape maintenance contractor will install holiday lightingat all entrances to River Run and our lights will be illuminated theSaturday before Thanksgiving.
The River Run Homeowners Association Board of Directors islooking for at least two residents to fill open board seats next year. These are volunteer positions with a two year elected term. Pleaseconsider joining the board and help us manage the RRHOA. Ifinterested, please contact a current board member and/or attend anupcoming meeting.
Our next Homeowners Association Board meeting will be onMonday, November 17th at 6:30 p.m. in the Clubhouse. All River RunHomeowners are welcome to attend these board meetings and areallowed up to three minutes to express concerns/raise issues.
Enjoy the fall season and especially Thanksgiving with our families…

the happy gardenermake a difference with a garden
Article Source: Becca MassatThe Growing Place
To Protect or Not to Protect?
As winter rapidly approaches, protecting plants fromweather and animals is a common garden task. Here are some guidelines and techniques.
Trees and Shrubs
Thin barked trees such as maples benefit from treewrap, especially when young, to keep critters away andprotect from wind and sun damage. Wrap the trunk in aspiral of brown paper tree wrap from the soil level to thefirst branches snugly. You could also use a piece of whiteplastic corrugated tubing, slit lengthwise. Do not use ablack product as the color black heats up in the sun andcan artificially warm the trunk, causing the cells to expand. The bark will then split once night falls and temperaturescool. Remove tree protection in spring once buds begin toswell.
Tree protection is also important for fruit trees such asapples, cherries and pears, and even crabapples. Rabbitsare fond of their bark and may nibble or even girdle thetrunk. Young shrubs are also tempting for rabbitsespecially fothergilla, burning bush, viburnum, roses andbarberries. A circle of chicken wire, graduated wire fencingor netting keeps the critters away. You may also trygranular repellants or sprays, but you’ll need to reapplythe product after rain or snowfall. Once shrub stems areabout the size of your ring finger, rabbits should avoidthem.
Evergreens
Some evergreens, planted in windy or sunny sites mayneed to be treated with an anti-transpirant spray like Wilt-Pruf after they have had enough cool temperatures to godormant, but while temperatures are still above freezing. The spray needs to be applied in daylight whentemperatures are above 40 degrees and it is able to drythoroughly so it doesn't freeze on the leaves/needles andproperly bonds to the surface. The spray creates aprotective film so that the leaves do not lose as muchmoisture in the dry winter wind. This coating is a naturalproduct derived from pine resin and it gradually wearsaway over a period of four to six months. Newly planted, broadleaf evergreens and yews that get afternoon wintersun will also benefit from this protection.
For cedar, cypress, juniper and arborvitae, it isimportant to wait until late fall when these plants havehad a chance to harden off and the moisture in the foliagehas retreated to the root system for the winter. Protectthese plants if they are newly planted or are in sunny, windy sites. Broadleaf evergreens such as boxwood andrhododendron may also be protected from winter damage.Because broadleaf evergreens have a different leafstructure, you can apply the product well into winter, aslong as it’s a sunny day when temperatures are abovefreezing. One application usually is sufficient, but followthe directions on the label.
To protect Christmas trees, wreaths and roping, spraythoroughly and allow them to dry before bringing thegreens indoors.
Roses
In our area, many of the most popular roses – such ashybrid teas, floribundas, grandifloras, and climbing roses –need some kind of winter protection. Most of the shruband species roses (own root grown) are hardy and do notneed extra protection.• First, clean up the area around the rose.• Make sure the rose is well watered.• Do not cut the canes back, but leave them be. Winterdamage starts at the tips and the longer the cane, the betterchance of having more living tissue by spring.• When the ground is beginning to freeze (usually afterthree hard frosts) apply a mound of soil or compost overthe base of the rose or enclose the rose with a collar ofchicken wire filled with shredded leaves. Removal of thisprotection in spring will depend on the weather.• To protect from rabbits, a circle of chicken wire workswell so they cannot get at the stems to nibble.

WHORESCUED
WHO?Pet TalesBy the Naperville Area Humane Society
She spends her life in a tiny, filthy cage with the deafening sound of hundreds of dogs barking forattention around her. Her last bit of water is green and no veterinarian will ever check on herinfected mouth, raw from biting the wire cage around her in vain. Spinning in circles, bred again
and again without hope of ever getting to feel grass in her toes. No treats, toys or scratches behind herears. No one will brush the mattes from her shaggy coat or clip her painfully long nails. No one will evertell her she is a good girl or take her for a car ride or walk in the woods. This is the life of a puppy milldog.
You may think this is a rare occurrence, but the reality is there are hundreds of thousands of dogs thatexperience this type of inhumane treatment daily in the U.S. alone. Customers unknowingly keep thiscruelty alive by buying puppies in pet stores and online where photos of frolicking dogs dot a greenpasture. Behind the scenes lies the truth, and if you are unable to personally visit the place your puppywas born and raised and see the parents’ living conditions, there is no way to know your puppy didn’tcome from a puppy mill, no matter what the sales clerk or website tells you. Please consider adoption tostop the cycle of suffering. To find out more information, please visit www.stoppuppymills.org.
To learn more about the plight of puppy mill dogs, please join us for our next adult education seminaron Tuesday, November 18th at 6:30 p.m. at the Naperville Area Humane Society located at 1620 W. DiehlRoad in Naperville. To register for this free seminar, please contact Terri at 6304208989, ext. 117 oremail [email protected]. Space is limited.
[xÄÄÉÉÉÉÉÉÉAAA \ËÅ Wâ~x tÇw \ tÅ t ÑâÜxuÜxw uÄÉÉw{ÉâÇw4Folks don’t think of us purebreds being homeless inshelters, but about one out of four of us is! I may lookbig in my photo, but I still have growing up to do!! I havesome obedience training but will definitely need tocontinue it. I love treats and am quite smart if I say somyself so training should be fun. True to my breed, I liketo sniff anything and everything, my nose is always onthe ground. My new owners will have to have experiencewith my breed and be dedicated to giving me the properamount of exercise. I might be able to live with anotherdog, but no cats please!
Duke, like all homeless dogs and cats, deserves a secondchance at a forever home. Remember, you not only savethe life of the animal that you adopt, you save the life ofthe animal waiting for the cage space to open and theopportunity to be put up for adoption.
