Our Year 7 on Show was an evening event that combined displays of students work, both static and interactive, as well as performances of Music and Drama. The students are to be congratulated for the way they worked together to make the event such a success. Particular mention should be made of the range of hors d'oeuvres they prepared and served – there were definitely no leftovers! In addition, our Year 7s were supported by Year 12 students from Thomas Hassall Anglican College who showed us what we have to look forward to when our students pursue music to a higher level. P-6 students also enjoyed having parents visit their classrooms and take part in morning lessons. Often parents don’t get the full story of what their children are up to at school. This was an opportunity for parents to step right in and see for themselves samples of their children’s work and a learning session in action. Our biggest event of the week was Grandparent’s Day and the Book Week Parade Assembly. The sun was shining which allowed us to enjoy an outdoor assembly and family picnic. I spoke to the grandparents about the differences in their schooling to 21st century schooling. It is not just the introduction of new technology that makes our classrooms different, it is the focus we have on how and what we want students to learn. 21 st century classrooms focus on what students know, can do and are like, even after all the details or content are forgotten. Our College wants to see students active in their learning, collaborating with their classmates and able to connect what they are learning to real life contexts. Not only do we want our students to have the skills to seek out meaningful employment or higher education, we want to see our students develop a conscience about caring for other people in their family, community and the world and be equipped to contribute and make a difference in our world. Year 1 Excursion Year 1 have been learning about sustainability in HSIE and Science this term. As part of this unit we went on an excursion to the Mount Annan Botanic Gardens. We participated in a recycling workshop where we learnt about how to know which rubbish goes in each bin and how we can decid whether to recycle plastics or not. We also got to hold worms and use microscopes to look at them closely. We were amazed to see how worms help to look after our soil. Before our workshop finished we got to plant our own pea seedling to take home to put in our own gardens. We had a great day!

Year 7 On Show On Thursday, 21 August we held our inaugural Year 7 display night. The event provided a unique opportunity for Year 7 students to showcase some of their classwork to families, friends and the wider community. Students were given the brief in Food Technology of ‘planning a menu with various hor d’oeuvers for 100 guests’. The students then investigated, researched and finely tuned their recipes before they commenced catering for the big event. They did an amazing job and we were very impressed and appreciative to all Year 7 and staff for their hard work. We would also like to thanks Mrs Clisdell for her organisation of the music performances, Mrs Monteleone for the English performance, Mrs Lowe for the art display, Mr Ford, Mr Clisdell and the entertainment students for the sound and lighting and Mrs Stelzer for her assistance with the Food preparation. A big thank you to all of the families and the wider community who attended and supported the event.

Prep - Year 6 Open Classrooms On Friday, 22 August, parents enjoyed stepping back into the classroom as they joined in on a morning of activities with their children in class. Parents were able to experience first hand, a range of classroom routines and left thinking 'It wasn't like that when we went to school! It's much more fun these days!'. Students really enjoyed the morning as well as it gave them the opportunity to show their mums and dads what they had been learning this year. We look forward to many more of these days in the years ahead.

Cocurricular The College Cocurricular program continues to develop. More and more students are taking advantage of the music tuition available. Over the past weeks we have met our drum and brass peripatetic tutors. The College also provides keyboard, vocal and guitar tutoring. The Senior School band had it’s very first gathering with eight of our Year 7 students attending! The College is looking for a string tutor to add to our peripatetic list. If you know of any string or woodwind tutor, or are interested in learning an instrument, please contact the Office.

Book Week: Author Visit On Thursday, 21 August local author Jo Oliver visited the College and gave three wonderful workshops to our Junior School classes. The children were engaged and enjoyed the presentations and seeing how Jo's books were made. They had many questions and were fascinated with the pro-cess of writing and illustrating books. They were astounded that authors earn so little money for each published book. Copies of Jo's books were left with each stage to go into our classroom libraries. A very big THANK YOU to Jo for giving her time to come and share with us.

Grandparent’s Day and Book Fair On Monday, 23 August the College held its third Annual Bookfair and Grandparents Day. This year saw the greatest number of grandparents that have visited the College. Grandparents took the opportunity to visit classrooms, enjoy a delightful morning tea provided by the students and watch the Book Parade which was awash with character and colour. Grandparents were also treated to wonderful performances presented by all the students. There was singing, dancing and drama. It was a special opportunity for students to be able to give a little something back to the fabulous grandparents who play such an important part in their lives. Thank you to all those who attended and made this day so special. Also, a special thank you to all the parents who helped sell books at the Book Fair and helped by serving in the canteen.

In the Classroom with Mr Chapman and 3/4Red

As part of Science Week last week, the students in 3-4 Red had a challenge. In groups, they had to make a bridge that could sustain the weight of a Matchbox car with nothing other than straws and masking tape. They were given a budget (a set of straws) and a time frame (40 minutes). There was limited teacher support. The students had to problem solve their way through the making of a bridge. The bridges were then tested to see if they cold hold the weight, which all bridges could. Some boys from Kindergarten then came in to judge whether or not they would play with them and which one they liked best. The designs shown were very impressive and the students’ ability to solve problems and create creative designs with limited materials was commendable. Well done to all.

In the Classroom with Mrs Humphreys Thank you again to the volunteers that make these programs run. For more details see http://www.multilit.com. This term we have seen students make great gains in Learning Support. Students have been working towards acquiring new skills that support their learning across all curriculum areas. We have seen a number of students complete components of the MULTILIT program. Students have experienced a boost in confidence as they reach these important milestones. This program aims at assisting students in Year Two and beyond, in the acquisition of important skills that are required for successful reading. Students are developing the ability to recognise commonly found sight words, decode unknown text and improve fluency in their reading. An exciting new development in Learning Support has been the decision to implement the MINILIT program which supports readers in Year One. This broadens our ability to better cater for students who have not yet become confident readers. Stay tuned as the training and resources are put into place for this new program. Thank you again to the volunteers that make these programs run. For more details see http://www.multilit.com.

Live Life Well @ School Getting out and active has been hard to do over the last few weeks, but staying active doesn’t always mean going outside. It is important for you and your child to remind your brain that it has a body attached to it too! Why not try some of the activities below instead of playing on devices or resorting to television. It may even help prevent ‘cabin fever’ during those long wet weeks. Screen-free things to do Limit your child’s screen time to no more than one to two hours a day. This includes television, electronic games and computer games. Offer alternatives to watching TV, until new, healthy habits are created. Some alternatives are:

listen to music go to the park draw a picture play cards ride a bike read a book make a scrap book hula hoop jump rope play with your pet do a crossword learn a magic trick learn to juggle plant some seedlings play hopscotch learn to knit or crochet play a board game create sidewalk art with chalk build a cubby house.

Vegie Ideas! Thank you to all those parents who have already offered to help with the Vegie Patch. On Friday, 5 September, I am asking anyone who is interested and has a green thumb (or want to know how to get one) to meet with me straight after school in Kindergarten Reds’ room to discuss the beginnings of a Vegie Club. Come with a vision and some enthusiasm! If you are interested and unable to make it on the day please let me know before hand via email [email protected]
