F rom the Great Fathers
A commentary on Isaiah by Eusebius of Caesarea The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight the paths of our God. The prophecy makes clear that it is to be fulfilled, not in Jerusalem but in the wilderness: it is there that the glory of the Lord is to appear, and God’s salvation is to be made known to all mankind. It was in the wilderness that God’s saving presence was pro-claimed by John the Baptist, and there that God’s salvation was seen. The words of this prophecy were fulfilled when Christ

Charismatic Prayer Group December Happenings
“God so loved the world that He sent His only Son” (Jn 3:16) The long awaited coming of Jesus is at last upon us as preparation gives way to celebration of the actual birth of our Lord Jesus. In December, Luke’s gospel for the Liturgy brings us through preparation, the Nativity and Jesus teaching the elders in the temple. As we hear the Gospel teaching of Jesus beginning His mission of our salvation, let our celebration of His birth always remind us that Jesus’ salvific mission reaches far beyond that Christmas Day over two-thousand years ago and continues to draw the world toward Him until the end of time. If you are looking for more ways to connect your life with your faith, please join us on Friday evenings in December from 7:30 pm to 9 pm in the Prayer Room of the Family Life Center. Hear Jesus teachings come alive in the Gospel. We will share God’s word, have live music of praise and worship and interces-sory prayers for healing and thanksgiving. Fellowship and light refreshments follow. December 14: “What then should we do to prepare?” December 21: “Blessed are you who believed.” December 28: “All who heard were astounded at His understanding.” Discussion topics at our December gatherings are from the Gospel of: Luke 3:1-6, 3:10-18, 1:39-45, 2;41-52 African Charismatic Prayer Group We meet every Friday from 6:00 p.m.—8:00 p.m. in room 8 of the Family Life Center (FLC). Advent Traditions for the Family
The Catholic Church has designated the four weeks preced-ing Christmas as Advent, a time to prepare the way of the Lord for His coming as our King and Savior. In addition, the Church teaches that:
[w]hen the Church cele-brates the liturgy of Adven-teach year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Saviors first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for his sec-ond coming. By celebrating [John the Baptists] birth and martyrdom, the Church unites herself to his desire: He must increase, but I must decrease (Catechism, no. 524; original emphasis).
By participating in various time-honored traditions, such as making Jesse trees or putting on a Christmas play at home, Catholic families can engage more fruitfully in the seasons of Advent and Christmas.
Either we live the liturgical year with its varying seasons of joy and sorrow, work and rest, or we follow the pat-tern of the world, writes Helen McLoughlin in Advent and Christmas in a Catholic Home, commenting on the challenge Catholics have of being in the world but not of the
These are hopeful thoughts as we prepare to incorporate some of these liturgical activities into our home life during Advent to enable us to truly celebrate Christmas. It is a shame that many do not fast during Advent, because without a fast there can really be no feast at Christmas. Fasting and other forms of penance, such as prayer and almsgiving, help to purify our hearts and prepare us for the celebration of Christmas (cf. Catechism, no. 1434). The Church especially en-courages participation at weekday Masses during Advent, because in the Eucharist we find the source and goal of our Advent preparation: Christ Himself, whose sacrifice rec-onciles us with God (cf. Catechism, no. 1436; Sacred Congregation of Rites, Eucharisticum Mysterium, no. 29). The Church primarily celebrates Christmas from Christmas Day until the Solemnity of the Epiphany, which commemorates the manifes-tation of Christ as the Savior of the whole world (cf. Mt. 2:1-12). The Church has also traditionally cele-brated Christmas for 40 days, culmi-nating on the Feast of the Presenta-tion (Feb. 2). During this time, the birth of Christ is celebrated as one continuous festival. It is just as im-portant to celebrate during the Christmas season as it is to prepare for Christ during Advent.

world throughout the year. She wrote these profound words in the 1950s, but they are even more im-portant today because of the gen-eral decline in Catholic family life during the last 40 years. With two parents working in many house-holds, there is less time to devote to the spiritual life of the family. As Catholic parents, we must readjust our priorities and teach our children by living our faith, both inside and outside the home. It seems fitting that Advent is the beginning of the liturgical calendar, for it is a season of spiritual prepara-tion marked by an eager longing for the birth of Our Savior Jesus Christ. There are age-old Advent practices, some of which are mentioned in this FAITH FACT, which will help our chil-dren and families live closer to Christ. The practices are time-tested and proven. They teach the doc-trine of redemption and develop a sense of generosity toward God (cf. Catechism, nos. 2222-26). A family’s strong and living faith will become their heritage and a mode to rein-force the religious practices cen-tered in the liturgy. Children love to anticipate, writes McLoughlin. When there are empty mangers to fill with straw for small sacrifices, when the Mary candle is a daily reminder on the dinner table, when Advent hymns are sung in the candlelight of a graceful Advent wreath, children are not anxious to celebrate Christmas before time. That would offend their sense of honor. Older children who make Nativity sets, cut Old Testament sym-bols to decorate a Jesse tree, or prepare costumes for a Christmas play will find Advent all too short a time to prepare for the coming of Christ the King.

Continued from front page... and his glory were made manifest to all: after his baptism the heavens opened, and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove rested on him, and the Father’s voice was heard, bearing witness to the Son: This is my beloved Son, listen to him. The prophecy meant that God was to come to a deserted place, inaccessible from the beginning. None of the pa-gans had any knowledge of God, since his holy servants and prophets were kept from approaching them. The voice commands that a way be prepared for the Word of God: the rough and trackless ground is to be made level, so that our God may find a highway when he comes. Prepare the way of the Lord: the way is the preaching of the Gospel, the new message of consolation, ready to bring to all mankind the knowledge of God’s sav-ing power. Climb on a high mountain, bearer of good news to Zion. Lift up your voice in strength, bearer of good news to Jeru-salem. These words harmonize very well with the meaning of what has gone before. They refer opportunely to the evangelists and proclaim the coming of God to men, after speaking of the voice crying in the wilderness. Mention of the evangelists suitably follows the prophecy on John the Baptist. What does Zion mean if not the city previously called Jeru-salem? This is the mountain referred to in that passage from Scripture: Here is mount Zion, where you dwelt. The Apostle says: You have come to mount Zion. Does not this refer to the company of the apostles, chosen from the former peo-ple of the circumcision? This is the Zion, the Jerusalem, that received God’s salva-tion. It stands aloft on the mountain of God, that is, it is raised high on the only-begotten Word of God. It is com-manded to climb the high mountain and announce the word of salvation. Who is the bearer of the good news but the company of the evangelists? What does it mean to bear the good news but to preach to all nations, but first of all to the cities of Judah, the coming of Christ on earth?

Pasos básicos para confesarse Entra al confesionario sin miedo, confiando en la misericordia de Jesús: Penitente: Ave María Purísima. Sacerdote: Sin pecado concebida. Penitente: Bendígame padre porque he pecado.

American Heritage Girls American Heritage Girls is a program open to girls age 5 to 18. We provide an alternative to the traditional scouting programs for girls. Our tagline “Faith, Service, Fun” cap-tures the essence of our organization. We earn badges in multiple activities and teach girls servant leadership. Our balanced programming includes 6 emphases: Faith, Citi-zenship, Leadership, Social, Emotional, and Life Skills. Amer-ican Heritage Girls is open to girls of all faiths and abilities. To find out more go to: Americanheritagegirls.org, or con-tact us at [email protected] and visit us on September 27th at 6:30pm. Email for exact location at SEAS. Blood Drive Schedule for 2019 The 2019 SEAS blood drives are scheduled for March 17th, June 2nd, Sept. 1st and Dec. 1st from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the FLC building.
Continued from page 9… The following activities are provided so that you and your family can live Advent and Christmas to the fullest. Advent wreath: The Advent wreath, which has German origins, is probably the most recognized Advent custom. It is a wreath made of evergreens that is bound to a circle of wire. It symbolizes the many years from Adam to Christ in which the world awaited its Redeemer; it also represents the years that we have awaited His second and final coming. The wreath holds four equally spaced candles, the three purple ones lit on the penitential Sundays and a pink one for Gaudete, the joyful third Sunday in Advent. There are many available prayers and hymns found in the reading list that can accompany your personal Advent wreath ceremony. The empty manger: Each child may have his own individual manger, or there may be one manger for the whole family. The idea is that when acts of service, sacrifice, or kindness are done in honor of Baby Jesus as a birthday present, the child receives a piece of straw to put into the manger. Then, on Christmas morning, Baby Jesus is placed in the manger. Encour-age your children to make Jesus bed as comfortable as possible through their good deeds. In the process, explain Christs incomparable self-gift at Christmas and Easter that enables us to be part of Gods family. The Jesse tree: The Jesse tree tells about Christs ancestry through symbols and relates Scripture to salvation history, pro-gressing from creation to the birth of Christ. The tree can be made on a poster board with the symbols glued on, or on an actual tree. For further information read, Advent and Christmas in a Catholic Home. St. Nicholas Day: The feast of St. Nicholas is on Dec. 6th. It is a highlight of the Advent season. Each child puts out a shoe the night before St. Nicholas Day in the hope that the kind bishop with his miter, staff, and bag of gifts will pay a visit. The current Santa Claus is modeled after St. Nicholas, but commercialism has tarnished the true story. Many families give gifts on both Dec. 6 and Christmas. Read about St. Nicholas in your favorite saints book. The Christ candle: Any large white candle can be used for the Christ candle. The idea is to decorate it with symbols for Christ. Use old Christmas cards, sequins, holly, etc. The candle can be lit on Christmas Eve to show that the Light of the World has arrived. Then continue to light the Christ candle throughout the year at Sunday dinner to remind your family of our waiting for Christ, as well as celebrating His birth and Resurrection.

How to go to Confession
In order to make a good confession, we examine our conscience, asking God’s help to know our sins and to be truly sorry for them.
R i te of Reconci l iat ion
Priest: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Penitent: Amen. Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been (say how long) since my last confession. My sins are (confess your sins). When you are done, the priest will give you spiritu-al advice and assign a penance. He will then ask you to pray an Act of Contrition, for example: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
- or- O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they have offended Thee, my God, Who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve wit the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen. The Priest then says the Prayer of Absolution while the penitent listens. At the conclusion of the pray-er, make the sign of the Cross and say, “Amen.” Priest: Go in peace Penitent: Thanks be to God Complete your penance as soon as possible. If you were given prayers to say, try to pray them in church before departing.
How to Make a Good Confession Confession is not difficult, but it does require preparation. We should begin with prayer, placing ourselves in the presence of God, our loving Father. We seek healing and forgiveness through repentance and a resolve to sin no more. Then we review our lives since our last confession, searching our thoughts, words and actions for that which did not conform to God’s command to love Him and one another through His laws and the laws of His Church. This is called an examination of conscience. Examination of Conscience Ask God to help you make a good confession. In quiet reflection ask yourself: Since my last confession… Did I pray to God, daily and from my heart? Did I live and witness to my Catholic faith, joyfully &
courageously? Did I take God’s name in vain? Did I curse anyone or make false oaths? Did I engage in superstitious or occult practices?
Did I attend and participate actively at Mass on Sun-days and holy days of obligation? Did I fast & abstain on prescribed days?
Did I respect people in authority? My employer? Did I honor my parents?
Was I violent or unnecessarily aggressive (e.g., physi-cally, verbally, psychologically, etc.) with anyone?
Was I prideful, stubborn, or rude with anyone? Did I hold a grudge?
Did I abuse alcohol, prescription medications, or ille-gal drugs? Did I overindulge in food?
Did I consent to, recommend, advise, or actively take part in an abortion? Did I use abortifacient drugs?
Did I view pornography, entertain lustful thoughts, conversations or actions?
Was I unloving to my spouse? Did I engage in adul-terous activity (e.g., sexual, emotional, virtual, etc.)? Did I use contraceptives?
Was I neglectful of the spiritual, intellectual, emotion-al, or physical needs of my spouse, children, or fami-ly?
Did I steal or damage another’s property? Was I hon-est and just in my business relations? Did I waste time at work?
Did I contribute to the needs of the spiritually and materially poor with my time and resources?
Did I engage in gossip? Did I lie? Did I speak poorly of others? Did I judge anyone unfairly?
Did I envy anyone? Was I jealous of others or or cov-et another’s belongings?

Continued from page 12… The Mary candle: Some families have the custom of dec-orating the Christ candle with a blue veil on December 8th, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. On this great feast, others place a candle with a blue ribbon be-fore a statue or picture of the Blessed Virgin, whose yes to God enabled our Lords coming at Christmas. The candle is lit during meal times to serve as a delightful reminder of Marys eager expectation of the Light of the World. It can also serve as a reminder to each family member to keep their own light of grace burning as a preparation for Christs coming. St. Lucy cakes: The feast of St. Lucy, virgin and martyr, is on December 13th. This marks the opening of the Christ-mas season in Sweden. Her life story can be found in most saints books, as can the recipe for the traditional cakes. The symbolism is rich and her life story worthwhile reading. The Nativity scene: This is the event in which the entire family shares setting up the Christmas manger. Mary and Joseph should be far off traveling and their approach to Bethlehem can be adjusted daily. Older children can make life-size Nativity models, carve them, cut them out from cardboard, or set up pre-made figurines. The crea-tive ideas are without limit. Make sure to place the Nativi-ty scene where many can admire the children's efforts to give God glory. Christmas baking: There are many recipe books availa-ble to find great traditional Christmas baking ideas. (See recommended reading below.) The baking usually starts around December 20th. As Christmas approaches, the house will smell of baking and fresh wreaths. The glory of Christmas is at hand! Move the manger to a focal point, add lights to the Nativity to be lighted on Christmas Eve, and anticipate together.

St. Lucy December 13 Lucy's history has been lost and all we really know for certain is that this brave woman who lived in Syracuse, Italy lost her life during the persecution of Christians in the early fourth century. Her veneration spread to Rome so that by the sixth century the whole Church recognized her courage in defense of the faith. One legend tells the story of a young Christian woman who vowed to live her life in service of Christ. Her mother tried to arrange a marriage for her with a pagan and Lucy knew her mother could not be swayed by a young girl's vow, so she devised a plan to convince her mother that Christ was the better partner for life. After several prayers at the tomb of Saint Agatha, Lucy saw the saint in a dream. St. Agatha told Lucy her mother's illness would be cured through faith, which Lucy used to persuade her mother to give the dowry money to the poor and allow her to commit her life to God. While Lucy and her mother were grateful to God, the rejected bridegroom was deeply angered and betrayed Lucy's faith to the Roman governor Paschasius, who had her put to death. She is the patron saint of the blind and those with vision problems.
