Munyak, es la coordi-nadora de nuestro pro-ceso de RICA, Rito de Iniciación Cristiana, adaptada para niños. Ella está feliz de ten-er la oportunidad de ayudar a que la fe viva para nuestra juventud.

“Estos niños van a tener esta vida de fe plena abierta para ellos,” dice ella. “Mi esperanza

“These children are going to have this full faith life opened to them,” she says. “My hope for them is that they know the Church will always be there for them.”

This process is designed to serve children, ages 7 through 17, who have not previously been baptized or received the other Sacraments of Initiation. Through this process, they learn the basics of the faith and begin to develop a relationship with Christ.

“I’m really big on prayer and I really want them to be able to identify ‘What is a Catholic?’ and ‘What makes me Catholic?’”

Stewardship’s “Supreme Teacher”

Following Christ’s Example

Almost any successful endeavor in life requires the benefit of strong leadership. And a truly effective

leader does not lead by simply telling others what to do, but by providing a strong example of how to carry oneself on a daily basis.

This is no different for us in our lives as Catholic Christians. As individuals who face numerous difficult choices every day, we require a leader who, through word and example, can show us the path to living according to God’s will. For us, Jesus is the supreme teacher of every aspect of Christian life, and His life as documented in the Gospels is a model that we should strive to imitate in living as good Christians. And as we have learned, stewardship — the sharing of the gifts that God has given to us — is a big part of Christian life, and one for which Jesus left many examples of successful living.

Jesus’ nature of selfless service, documented many times throughout the New Testament and culminating with His death for our sins, is an underlying aspect of living the stewardship way of life. As the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops points out in its pastoral document Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response, “In Jesus’ teaching and life self-emptying is fundamental. Now, it might seem that self-emptying has little to do with stewardship, but in Jesus’ case that is not so. His self-emptying is not sterile self-denial for its own sake; rather, in setting aside self, he is filled with the Father’s will, and he is fulfilled in just this way” (19).

The next time you are unsure of how to best respond to God’s gifts in stewardship, take a moment to open up the Bible. Jesus provides us with numerous examples through His actions and teachings of how to live as one of His disciples.

Casi cualquier esfuerzo exitoso en la vida requiere el beneficio de un liderazgo fuerte. Y un líder verdaderamente

efectivo no es líder al decirle a los demás qué hacer, sino al proporcionar un buen ejemplo de cómo comportarse a diario.

Esto no es diferente para nosotros en nuestras vidas como cristianos Católicos. Como individuos que enfrentan numerosas decisiones difíciles todos los días, necesitamos un líder que, a través de la palabra y el ejemplo, pueda mostrarnos el camino a la vida según la voluntad de Dios. Para nosotros, Jesús es el maestro supremo de todos los aspectos de la vida cristiana, y su vida, tal como se documenta en los Evangelios, es un modelo que debemos esforzarnos por imitar para vivir como buenos cristianos. Y como hemos aprendido, la mayordomía, el compartir los dones que Dios nos ha dado, es una parte importante de la vida cristiana, y para la cual Jesús dejó muchos ejemplos de una vida exitosa.

La naturaleza de servicio desinteresado de Jesús, documentada muchas veces a lo largo del Nuevo Testamento y que culmina con su muerte por nuestros pecados, es un aspecto subyacente de vivir el estilo de vida de la mayordomía. Como lo señala la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos en su documento pastoral de Mayordomía: La respuesta de un discípulo, “En la enseñanza de Jesús y en la vida, el auto-vaciamiento es fundamental. Ahora, puede parecer que el auto-vaciamiento tiene poco que ver con la mayordomía, pero en el caso de Jesús eso no es así. Su auto-vaciamiento no es una auto-negación estéril por sí misma; más bien, al apartarse de sí mismo, se llena con la voluntad del Padre y se cumple de esta manera”(19).

La próxima vez que no esté seguro de cómo responder mejor a los dones de Dios en la mayordomía, tome un momento para abrir la Biblia. Jesús nos proporciona numerosos ejemplos a través de Sus acciones y enseñanzas de cómo vivir como uno de Sus discípulos.

A Letter From Our Pastor Una carta de nuestro pastor

We’re all familiar with the term “Holy Day of Obligation.” In

fact, there is one this month — Aug. 15, the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary. A solemnity is a feast day of the highest rank in the Church — and as we are told in the Code of Canon Law (1247), “On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass.”

Note that what this says is that Sunday is, in fact, a Holy Day of Obligation — we should view our weekly Mass attendance this way, as well. Sometimes in our busy modern lives, we may lose sight of how important this is.

Of course, our Mass attendance goes hand in hand with stewardship — how we take and responsibly use the gifts God has given us, then return and share those gifts with the Lord and those around us. Although going to Mass is a gift to the Lord, it is also a gift to our community and to ourselves. We need that time to step back from our daily worries and concerns, and to look deeper into the meaning of living and of the importance of our relationship with God.

This month, and always, let us each consider how important it is to attend Mass. If we are really going to be committed to stewardship, we need to realize the significance of setting aside time each week and on designated holy days to be with the Lord and with our parish community at Mass. We must be completely committed to living out our Catholic faith!

Todos estamos familiarizados con el término “Día de la obligación”. De

hecho, hay uno este mes: el 15 de Agosto, la solemnidad de la Asunción de María. Una solemnidad es un día festivo del rango más alto en la Iglesia, y como se nos dice en el Código de la Ley Canónica (1247), “los Domingos y otros días festivos de obligación, los fieles están obligados a participar en la Misa.”

Tenga en cuenta que lo que esto dice es que el Domingo es, de hecho, un Día Santo de Obligación: también deberíamos ver nuestra Misa semanal de esta manera. A veces, en nuestras ajetreadas vidas modernas, podemos perder de vista lo importante que es esto.

Por supuesto, nuestra asistencia a la Misa va de la mano de la mayordomía: cómo tomamos y usamos responsablemente los dones que Dios nos ha dado, luego regresamos y compartimos esos dones con el Señor y los que nos rodean. Aunque ir a misa es un regalo para el Señor, también es un regalo para nuestra comunidad y para nosotros mismos. Necesitamos ese tiempo para alejarnos de nuestras preocupaciones y preocupaciones diarias, y para profundizar en el significado de la vida y en la importancia de nuestra relación con Dios.

Este mes, y siempre, consideremos lo importante que es asistir a la Misa. Though most of us began our Catholic journey as infants at the baptismal font, part of our Church’s

universality is that it is intended for all — those born within and without the faith. This is why the parish’s Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults process, or RCIA, continues to play such a vital role in our faith community by providing an outlet for adults to discover, discern and, ultimately, enter the Catholic Church.

“We partner with them in the journey, hopefully by providing a good example and being there to

answer their questions,” says RCIA coordinator Kevin Anderson. “We’re all about the process and journeying within the context of relationship. This includes both the individual’s relationship with God, as well as their relationship with our team members and the parish as a whole.”

This allows individuals, no matter where they are in the faith journey, to come and simply explore and grow together. RCIA provides them with great opportunities to ask questions about the faith, grow in their relationship with Christ and, if they choose, become fully initiated members of the Catholic Church.

“People come to us from all different situations — those who didn’t finish their sacramental formation, those who are trying to support a prospective partner for life, and those who are just looking for truth,” Kevin says.

No matter the starting point, all are welcome to join in this RCIA process. Gatherings typically take place Monday evenings from 6:30-7:45 p.m. For more information, please contact Kevin Anderson at 479-221-2439.

Bereavement Ministry Volunteers Comfort Those

in Mourning“Bury the dead” and “feed the hungry” are two of the

seven Corporal Works of Mercy. Jesus asks us to do these simple yet profound things for our friends and neighbors. It’s the small things that often have the biggest impact.

For more than 10 years, Marilyn Boyd has been cooking up entrees and side dishes for family and friends who have just buried a loved one. Annette Knittig has been helping for about seven years. The Bereavement Ministry was started through the Altar Society.

“Bereavement dinners show that our church community has empathy and understanding for the family,” Annette says.

on the morning of the funeral, while other volunteers bring in sides and dessert. They usually serve about 30 to 50 people, but they have served up to 200. Marilyn acknowledges that this is a great way to show family and friends of the deceased that parishioners are here for them. The church also provides a large space for family and friends to gather and enjoy a meal while sharing stories and memories.

“This ministry shows we are all part of the same church family and we share in their loss,” Marilyn says. “If we lose a parish member, it’s a loss to the whole parish. This is a way to show that we will miss the bereaved and a way to provide some comfort to the family.”

Barbara says. In addition to weekly classes, the children also

participate in “Breaking Open the Word” each Sunday, and spend time discussing the Scriptures at Mass.

“I ask them, ‘What did you hear in that Gospel?’” Barbara says. “Jesus lived over 2,000 years ago, but He’s talking to you today.”

Those who complete the RCIA process will be welcomed into the Church at the Easter Vigil. Barbara encourages parents who have not had their children baptized to consider enrolling them in RCIA.

“It doesn’t matter why they haven’t been baptized or received the sacraments,” she says. “The important thing is you’re here now. You’re questioning, you’re asking, you’re wondering. If you have questions, we’re here.”
