BEGINNING AND UNFOLDED STORIES AND MYSTERIES OF ‘ANGRI’/’D’ANGRI’ FAMILY IN

CORFU GREECE WHILE UNDER BRITISH PROTECTORATE

It all began when Napolitaine, Sicilian or Maltese, Saverio di Gennaro Angri married a Greek girl Maria Vittouri di Giovanni the family start to grew bigger and bigger in Greece Australia, USA, Malta, Italy and other countries of Europe from 1820 onwards.

‘ANGRI – D’ANGRI – ANGLI – DANGERI - DANERI’

WITH FEW MYSTERIES THAT HAVEN’T BEEN UNLOCKED AFTER TEN YEARS OF MY RESEARCH

BUT THE HUNT IS STILL IN PROGRESS

I will begin with how one foreigner arrived to Corfu Greece in 1817 from Naples - Italy, named as SAVERIO di Giovanni ANGRI born 1782/1783, son of di Gennaro ANGRI from Naples - Italy as many historians believe, but no one is certain of his exact homeland. I only assume that he could come from Sicily, Naples or even Malta. All we know about his Father that his name was Gennaro Angri unknown birth and died befor5e June 1821m and never came to Corfu. Nothing known about his Mother even not her name in fact her name or her as a wife or Mother to Saverio is not recorded or mentioned in any archives, in Italy, Greece or Malta.

Saverio Angri didn’t waste any time, as soon he arrived to Corfu he married to MARIA VITTURI daughter of Giovanni out of Corfu, before July, 06, 1818. No records are available of their marriage in Corfu and my assumption is that they were married in the outskirts of Corfu, or perhaps in another country.

The other version could also be that he secured himself to stay in Corfu, at that time under British Protectorate, and to assure himself before registering as foreigner he married Maria Vitturi to stay in

Page 5: From Golden Greek to Golden Gardener

the country. It did not cross my mind also if Saverio did run-away from some sort of a trouble back in his country.

No photographs are preserved, stored or available in any archives at Corfu or here in Australia of Saverio or Maria Angri (Vitturi).

Few notes about Maria Vitturi (assuming that she was second wife)

Daughter of IOANNIS GIOVANNI VITTURIS and ANASTASIA FERLINGOU (Daughter of Dimos Ferlingos) both from Corfu, Christian OrthodoxAnother collection is showing in Archives of the Catholic Church in Corfu book of marriages number 11, years 1795 – 1848.On the August 19, 1819, recorded as follow:Saverio Angri son of late Gennaro, 37 years old from Naples, in second marriageMaria Vitturi, daughter of late Giovanni, 21-years old from Corfu in first marriage, according to the dates above Maria Vitturi was born in c. 1798

On July 06, 1818, Saverio Angri son of late Gennaro registered as a foreigner living in Corfu and that he was from Naples Italy. His occupation is ‘Cameriere’ (Waiter or Servant)He has a document a permission of domicile in Corfu, number 107, valid for three months, since July 07, 1818.The records from:The registrar for foreigners in Corfu – Greece (census) in 1821 recorded that Saverio was 38 - years – old profession Cameriere and was living in Corfu for four years in the part of the town called ‘Porta Raimonda’.

He is resident in Corfu, together with his wife, without any child and resident at the House of Mr. GIPPLIN.

Explanation by George Linardos in his letter:

I had found before that in Census for the Foreigners in Corfu in 1818 (before second marriage), Saverio lives in Corfu together with his wife called Maria without any children, and my version is that his first wife is also called Maria. I found a Passport of a woman called Maria Antonia Angri, coming to Corfu in 1818, and I assume that she was the first wife of Saverio perhaps she died in Corfu 1818 – 1819. I cannot find access to records of deaths, as I do not know her surname (maiden), because all the women registered were with their maiden name and not with the husband’s surname.

Source of photograph: from Mr. Spiros P. Gauci – Gaoutsis - Secretary General, Responsible for the Cultural Affairs of the Catholic Archdiocese of Corfu, Ceffalonia –Zante

All information’s from Catholic Archdiocese of Corfu – Greece are now complete. Mr. Spiros P. Gauci explained to me in his letter that there isn’t any further information about Angri family due to WWII, many records had been destroyed and what left had not been sorted out or restored and placed into proper archives at the time of my inquiries.

Not long after my research with Catholic Archdiocese, I received an email from Mr. George Linardos in Corfu Greece (He never disclosed to me what are his involvements with archives) offering me his assistance.

Page 16: From Golden Greek to Golden Gardener

Tremendous discoveries were made about Angri/D’Angri family all his researches were collected from Corfu Census, Archives of Naturalizations, Passports, Official Newspapers, registrars of foreigners in Corfu, Birth, Marriages and Death records, arrivals and departures of passengers, electoral lists and some information’s from ‘Lountzis’ family in Corfu.

From here on the story of Angri/D’Angri can begin, information’s from two sides are very close to match to follow-up the steps and mysteries of this family. Mr. George Linardos in Corfu gave me with very strong support with information’s and materials that I require to publish this book.

While this book is under a blot I an still waiting for more materials to arrive as I’m blotting down word by word, day by day date by date and after year after year and now is time to introduce to you what is known about this family from Corfu. I have in my possession colossal amount of papers from Corfu Greece and I’m still waiting if more information will arrive while blotting down this book

Natale Spiridion Giorgio D’Angri (also known as ANGRI at the time of birth) was born on January 05, 1827, baptized on January 18, 1827 in Corfu Greece at that time known as Ionian Island under British Protectorate.Note: Archbishop Pietro Antonio Nostrano, proceeded most of the baptisms and marriages of Angri Family in Corfu Greece.

On December 20, 1856, he married (spinster) Eliza D’Angri (nee Watts) age 22 at St. Peters Anglican Church – Melbourne – Victoria – Australia. Eliza was born in 1834, Exeter -London – England, Witnesses: Martin and Eliza Watts. (Martin to my knowledge if is a brother of William Watts the father of Eliza)Natale known as ‘Nursery Man’ died illness and tired old age on April 04, 1897 in his own home at Exeter Street - Ballarat Victoria – Australia at the age of 70 and was buried at Ballarat Old cemetery together with his wife Eliza. Searching Ballarat Directories of rates payers, I noted down the following information about Natale D’Angri and Mr. W. Watts:*In 1855 D’Angri and Watts were not listed as residents in Ballarat*In 1857 Natale and Watts are not listed as residents or rate payers in Ballarat.*In 1865/1866 Natale D’Angri, miner was resident at 267 Sturt StreetBallarat*In 1869 Natale D’Angri was still resident at this address. In 1870 yearly rates payer Mr. William Watts and owner of the property known as ‘Corfu Cottage’, Gross annual value of property was £25.00 and full net annual value of £ 30.00.*In 1875 Natale known at that time as Nurseryman and was residing at 337 Stuart Street Ballarat.

Above was the residence and also known ‘Garden Nursery’ of Natale Spiridion Georgio D’Angri and his family situated near the well known ‘Wendouree’ at Ballarat. The house was built c.1885 when Natale purchased four acres of land in this vicinity with intention for his new venture of Gardening and Nursery business. Some of his children were also born in this house and Natale died in this house on April 04, 1897.

Page 29: From Golden Greek to Golden Gardener

I visited by myself this picturesque property few years back and it is still at it was build in 1885 very proudly and strongly from the day that was build until Natale died in 1897.On the right side at the front entrance there is a polished plague attached to the wall with mirror background with an imprint of ‘EXETER’. I was told by D’Angri family in Ballarat that the Street and the house were named after his wife’s city back in England.

Eliza D’Angri (nee Watts) was born in 1834 at Exeter city of Devon – England.

Eliza arrived to Australia together with her parents William and Eliza Watts with the luxury and famous ship on the maiden voyage ‘The Schomberg’ that ran on the reef at Peterborough on December 27, 1855 in calm conditions and the ship break up. All passengers with their language were rescued by the steamer ‘Queen’ and all passengers were transported to Melbourne.

It is also noticed that Natale S.G. D’Angri was also travelling with on same ship according to passenger list 1855. It is not known if Natale and Eliza knew each other before Natale and it is only my assumption that romance had developed during the voyage on ‘Schomberg’.

On December 20, 1856, Natale and Eliza married at St. Peters Anglican Church – Melbourne – Victoria – Australia. Witnesses: Martin and Eliza Watts. (Martin to my knowledge if is a brother of William Watts the father of Eliza)Eliza known as in her old age and pensioner died on June 08, 1911, age 77 at Gong, Gong Road - Bungaree and is buried at Ballarat Old Cemetery (Burial Ballarat Old Cemetery Time Spam Listing Area CN, Section 5, Grave 11, Listed as D’Augri Eliza) together with her husband Natale, her name is not written on the headstone.

Not very much is known about Eliza D’Angri. After Natale’s death she moved to Gong-Gong Street - Bungaree and she occupied herself with another D’Angri Nursery of Fruit Trees, keeping up tradition in D’Angri family.
