Police Youth Liason Officer Senior Constable James Bottalico share practical ways to ensure our children remain safe when engaging with mobile phones, iPads and other devices. This session is relevant to every parent and we encourage you to take the opportunity to hear about how you can help kids to be safe online.

Please email the school to reserve your place – [email protected] or call 9181 2636. Use of the playgrounds after school As part of the lease for before and after school care, Gowrie NSW uses the school hall and school playgrounds after school. Families are asked to vacate the playgrounds to allow Gowrie to run their programs outside.

New performance date The Stage 1 performing arts shows have been moved to Tuesday 27th August, a week later than originally scheduled. Tickets will be released next term. Canteen committee The P&C Canteen plays a pivotal role in our school supporting our children each and every day. Once a term for an hour, the P&C Canteen committee meet to look at the menu, prices and products. If you would like to be a member of this sub-committee of the P&C, please email the school.

Spring Fete – Coming Soon We are excited about the school fete coming up next term on Sunday 25th August and would like to thank all of our P & C parents and friends who are playing a part in getting things ready. The fete committee is planning a wonderful day of fun for families.

Approximately $23, 000 raised in Activitython Thank you to every family that sponsored students for the Activitython, raising around $23, 000! Congratulations to 2/3F who were the first class to bring in their Activitython sponsorship forms and monies and will enjoy a pizza party as a reward.

Full School Uniform I would like to thank all families who ensure that children are in full school uniform every day even during the colder weather. Students are asked to limit the wearing of sports tops to sporting events. Your commitment to

maintain the high standards of uniform and behaviour at the school reinforces that Drummoyne PS is a very special place to learn.

Volunteering at DPS Drummoyne Public School welcomes volunteers to the school in many capacities, including the canteen, uniform shop and reading in your child’s class. Even the smallest commitment to help out can really make a difference to the running of school programs and creating more meaningful experiences for the children. It is also a great way to meet other parents and the wider school community. If you volunteer to help in any way at the school, the NSW Department of Education requires that parents or close relatives who volunteer at their child's school, complete an Appendix 5 and provide the school with 100 points of ID. To complete this form, please visit the School Administration Office prior to volunteering and fill in your details and provide us with the appropriate identification. In the past this was required each year to be updated, but now the Department expects this just once before you begin volunteering and that will cover volunteering during your child’s entire attendance at the school. If you have already filled in one previously, you will not need to do it again, or you check with the office if you are on our approved volunteer list.

With best wishes for the week ahead, Brian J Dill PRINCIPAL

Discovering a seemingly magic bag of chalk while visiting the park on a rainy day, three children are astonished when their drawings of the sun, butterflies and a dinosaur amazingly come to life, in a wordless tale told through acrylic paint and coloured pencil artwork.

Class 2/3 F have written a response to the story ‘Chalk’- a book with no words! They were developing descriptive paragraphs that include dynamic dialogue. They have continued this writing focus with another story, entitled-‘Journey’.

WHAT IS A DISABILITY? A disability may be generally defined as a condition which may restrict a person's mental, sensory, or mobility functions to undertake or perform a task in the same way as a person who does not have a disability.

Disabilities affect people in different ways. The only thing that separates a person with a disability is that, for one reason or another, they are unable to do certain things in the same way as the mainstream of society. They may require some form of adaptation or alteration to assist them to overcome the effect of their disability. This definition is used in the collection of data for the NCCD return.

REGIONAL CROSS COUNTRY

On Friday the 14th June, Bonnie, Scarlett, Lexi, Cole and Elise all went to the regional Cross Country carnival at Miranda Park. It was great to represent Drummoyne Public School. There were 11 regions competing. The region that DPS is in is Balmain. Some of the other regions were Cronulla, Western Suburbs, Sutherland, South Sydney, Wiley Park Eastern Suburbs and many more.

The competition was well run and it moved fast. So sadly some people missed their race even after driving over an hour to get there. You could tell all the runners had trained hard and were ready to run the 3km course. We were a little nervous looking at how professional all the runners looked. But all we could do was our best. The course had a lot more hills than we were used to so this spread out the runners and made us extra puffed! There were 6 people in each region for each age group

STAGE ONE HISTORY TOUR OF

DRUMMOYNE

This week, Year 2 went on a historic walking tour around our suburb. We learnt so many things on the walking tour. We discovered another view of the water tower, seen from behind a house and on Formosa Street, we could spot Sydney Tower Eye. We found out who laid the two foundation stones at the fire station near the City of Canada Bay Council. We had such a good time!

By Zara Srinivasan 2M

Sir Thomas Henley is a famous man in Drummoyne’s history. We saw his legacy more than one time on our journey. Did you know that he was responsible for introducing a sewage system and starting a ferry company for Drummoyne?

Parents and teachers often ask me how to build resilience in kids.

My response is always the same: “Start by building independence and resilience will follow.”

Here’s how.

Children are hardwired for independenceSome time around the age of fifteen months, give or take three months, most children will make a strong case for self-sufficiency. They demand to do things their own way. This demand is soon backed by a strong voice – “NOOOO!” – and then more articulate cries of “I can do it!” as their third birthday approaches.

This is the time to harness your child’s push for independence and self-sufficiency. Their desire for independence and mastery over their immediate environment will see most children take incredible physical risks in the form of play and exploration of that environment. Concerned parents will naturally minimise risks by moving furniture around, keeping doors closed and hiding sharp implements, to name a few protective measures.

But parents can’t eradicate all risks. Kids will fall and hurt themselves … but they’ll also get up and go again. In time, they’ll learn to assess situations, stare down their fears and test themselves out in new situations. Falling down, brushing yourself off and trying again is part of the natural learning experience for most young children. Parents don’t have to do much more than assess a situation for real dangers, then stand back and allow their kids to explore their environments, pulling them up only when their play and explorations transgress the rights and peace of others.

How independence-building is the pathway to your child’s resilienceby Michael Grose

insightsRESILIENCE

Page 10: FRIDAY, JUNE 21 2019 TERM 2 WEEK 8 Respect Responsibility Resilience … · 2019-10-13 · Respect – Responsibility – Resilience FRIDAY, JUNE 21 2019 TERM 2 WEEK 8 TERM 2 WEEK

So what’s this got to do with resilience?Well, everything really. Independence is the pursuit of mastery over one’s self and one’s environment and rarely happens without mishaps and mistakes. It nearly always involves hurt, hardship, frustration and fear. That’s where resilience comes in. Resilience is the art of bouncing forward after experiencing these hurts, hardships, frustrations and fears. Resilience is what comes from seeking out self-sufficiency and independence.

The language of independenceThe fact that there’s a whole genre of language devoted to resilience (mostly cloaked in cliché) is no accident. Terms such as “Get back on the bike/horse when you fall off”, “Come on, brush yourself off and get on with it” or “What doesn’t kill you makes you strong” are built into the pyche of past generations. Many parents today will cringe at these terms as they appear a little callous and out of touch. Conversely most current parents’ relationship with risk and adventure – both required for independence-building – is very tenuous at best, non-existent at worst.

Therein lies the challenge. I haven’t met a parent, carer or teacher who doesn’t want the children in their care to develop resilience that will last a lifetime. Yet many of those same adults will block the pathway to children’s resilience by over-indulging them, solving their problems and not giving them real responsibility. In doing so they deny kids the sense of mastery that comes from sorting out their own problems, getting themselves out of jams and getting up after a fall.

You can never love your children too much, but you can love them helplessly. That’s what happens when we deny kids the opportunity to become truly independent and self-sufficient. Deny self-sufficiency and you block a child’s resilience. Develop real independence and you open a pathway to resilience that will last a lifetime.

Find out how to develop real independence and resilience in your child in my latest book Spoonfed Generation: How to raise independent kids.
