This is designed to ensure a smooth transition for all students and support student learning. The aims of this process are: To provide each child with the opportunity to be part of a class of children that will allow them the best opportunity to learn. To form well balanced classes of children that take into account the social, emotional, academic and physical characteristics of each child. To ensure that optimum use is made of the knowledge that teachers have of each child before and after class placement. This will be supported through ‘handover’ meetings between current and new teachers at the start of the new year. Other aspects of the class formation process include the following: Firstly, determining the number of classes for next year, class sizes and the year levels of each class based on anticipated student enrolments. This may include ‘across stage’ classes to cater for variations in year cohorts. Consideration will be given to gender balance, the previous class, each child’s ability, language background, student behaviour and friendship groups. An opportunity will be given for students to nominate who they believe would make good learning partners in the following year. The opportunity for social development through accessing a wide number of students is considered by the school. The individual learning needs of each child, including students with special needs, will be carefully considered.

PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Formation of Classes for 2020 Over the next few weeks a process for the placement of students into tentative classes for next year will take place involving executive, teachers and specialist staff. This is designed to ensure a smooth transition for all students and support student learning. The aims of this process are: • To provide each child with the opportunity to be part

of a class of children that will allow them the best opportunity to learn.

• To form well balanced classes of children that take into account the social, emotional, academic and physical characteristics of each child.

• To ensure that optimum use is made of the knowledge that teachers have of each child before and after class placement. This will be supported through ‘handover’ meetings between current and new teachers at the start of the new year.

Other aspects of the class formation process include the following: • Firstly, determining the number of classes for next

year, class sizes and the year levels of each class based on anticipated student enrolments. This may include ‘across stage’ classes to cater for variations in year cohorts.

• Consideration will be given to gender balance, the previous class, each child’s ability, language background, student behaviour and friendship groups. An opportunity will be given for students to nominate who they believe would make good learning partners in the following year. The opportunity for social development through accessing a wide number of students is considered by the school. The individual learning needs of each child, including students with special needs, will be carefully considered.

• Parallel or socially grouped classes will seek to have an equal balance of capable and less capable students. This will be based primarily on the academic ability of a student as indicated by class and grade assessments.

• Numbers in early childhood classes will seek to reflect the State government’s class size reduction program.

• Details relating to the school organisation, classes of children, and the teachers allocated to classes will be provided to parents on the first day of term 1.

• As the class structure may need to change depending on student enrolments over the holiday period, the school will not be in a position to share the composition of proposed classes prior to the start of the new year.

FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK

Forced perspective is a technique that employs optical illusion to make an object appear farther away, closer, larger or smaller than it actually is. It is used primarily in photography, filmmaking and architecture. Class 5P have had a great deal of fun experimenting with this in

art. Students have taken on the role of photographer or subject around the playground and produced some very interesting photos. To get a closer look please see the display outside my office.

FIELD OF MARS EXCURSION

On Tuesday we went on the bus for our excursion to the Field of Mars. It was brilliant! Meeting our tour guide, Nathan was super. Going in the bushy bushwalk was great. Walking through the sticky, muddy and leafy mangroves was divine. The leaf frames were beautiful. You had to put three or four leafs and put them into a black frame, close the frame and then hold it up to the sun. When I was holding mine up to the sun it was striking. Finding shuffling crabs was phenomenal. Making the rock concert was sensational. A rock concert with actual rocks, boom tish! Looking at the squiggling tadpoles and making five star lizard lounges was fabulous. However … it was disgraceful that we had to leave. Apart from that we had a great day!

CLASS 5P POETRY

Class 5P has been learning about limericks this week and also writing poems for Halloween.

Tess Conroy There was a bee named Tree He was a crazy bee

He had a weird heart And while riding a cart He fell into some tea

Aaliyah Dizdar I went to Halloween and it was scary And then I soon bumped into my best friend Mary It was a very scary night And I felt a lot of fright I got a lot of candy While the parents were being handy All the kids were given a task That involved us all wearing a mask I went trick or treating on the coast And I saw a lot of ghosts We went on a lot of streets And we gathered lots of treats It was only a matter of time Before someone committed a crime I heard a lot of screams From the people being mean I saw a lot of bats And also some rats

Christian Ng When he was carving a pumpkin he knew it was right But it gave him a fright So he took it down But it gave him a frown It was Halloween But he saw what should not be seen

Charlie Bernia Halloween is very scary With werewolves that are really hairy Why are these monsters being seen? Only one reason…. it’s Halloween!

Halloween’s a scary night With kids getting a big, big fright I walk around, it’s really scary What is it? It is so hairy

Halloween is such a good trend Though it might bring us to a fateful end Oh no, there’s something scary Wait, what is it? It’s so glary

Halloween may be a good trend But like I said, it brought me to an end

Jay Thakker People walking on the streets Trying to get treats Costumes are kooky Halloween is spooky

Finn Moore It’s a dark and scary night The streets are filled with fright Everybody on the streets Collecting treats You find a spooky house 3, 2, 1 lights out You walk inside And meet your demise

STUDENT SHOWCASE

As part of my Myths and Legends thinking keys project, I have created a sculpture of my favourite mythological creature, the mermaid. In addition to this I have also written an acrostic poem.

Mermaids live in the glistening ocean Each mermaid is delightfully different Red, tails, pink tails, blue tails too Magic mysteriously turns them into people Amazing hair flows freely everywhere In the bubbly blue ocean it is a whole new world Deep, deep down By Alexis Statham 5D

This week class 5C investigated how many students could fit into a cubic metre while studying volume in mathematics

School Office Hours Monday – Friday 8.45am - 3.45pm. eSafety - Joining forces to help parents and carers protect children online

We know that parents and carers worry about their children online — just as we worry about them in everyday life. In fact, our national survey of over 3,500 parents shows that 94% identified their child’s online safety was important. While being online provides many educational benefits for our children, it’s important to be aware of the risks. Any site, app or game with a chat or live video function can serve as a potential gateway for predators to contact young people. That’s why we’ve partnered with Crime Stoppers NSW to help parents deal with risks such as unwanted contact online. By remaining engaged in your children’s online lives and knowing what they’re doing, who they’re talking to and where to report if things go wrong, you can help to minimise any potential harm. Parents and carers play a crucial role in keeping children safe online. And eSafety is here to help along the way. Download factsheets at: https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au/knowledge/

Your child has the potential to be a leader given the right circumstances and environment. The following five leadership skills have been observed in student leaders in Australian primary schools and can be promoted by parents at home.

ResponsibilityBeing a leader means that your child is willing to take responsibility and be accountable for their actions. Personal responsibility is shown when your child is accountable for their behaviour, for their belongings and for others. Practical ways to develop responsibility include:

Giving them responsibility for part of their day

Encouraging them to restore relationships with others when they mess up

Taking responsibility for household chores

CommunicationWhile most leadership positions require your child to speak publicly their communication skills can be developed through regular one-on-one or small group experiences at home and at school. Practical ways to develop your child’s communication skills include:

One-on-one conversations with adults

Regular discussions at the meal table

Encourage your child to participate fully in speaking activities at school

OrganisationPersonal organisational skills and the ability to organise others are important for effective leadership. Practical ways to develop organisational skills include encouraging your child to:

Keep their personal space tidy and organised

Use a diary to help manage their time

Organise a weekly chores roster including all members of the family

insightsEDUCATION/LEARNING

Page 11: Respect – Responsibility – Resilience · Respect – Responsibility – Resilience FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1 2019 TERM 4 TERM 4 WEEK 4. WHAT’S ON. Monday 4 November ... and also writing

TeamworkCooperating, encouraging and accepting others are essential qualities of an effective leader. Practical ways to develop a sense of teamwork include:

Play team games where children work together

Encourage siblings to cook and do other chores together

Focusing on your child’s contribution to a team or group rather than individual achievement

Emotional intelligenceAn underestimated quality shared by most admired leaders is their ability to remain calm when things don’t go well. This emotional intelligence skill requires self-awareness, an ability to recognise their emotions and respond appropriately to the emotions of others. You can nurture these skills in the following way:

Help your child recognise their emotions

Help your child recognise emotions in others

Teach your child to shift their mood

Leaders are needed in all walks of life – at work, in school, in families, in sport and in the wider community. The skills of leadership are sewn in the first group that they belong to – their family. By encouraging your child to be a contributing member of their family you are also helping to develop leaderships skills they can practise outside their family.
